We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.

Usually that's how it is unless you are a Class-A suckup or extraordinarily bright (which you'd be self aware to know you're not considering you're asking for joining advice on an anonymous, public forum whose users thrive on controversy)
I'd suggest you play your cards well and think about a backup plan for your future.

If you have poor mental health due to genetic or lifestyle causes, therapists help manage symptoms, develop coping mechanisms and live a functional life. They don't treat 'diversity' any more than nurses and doctors and surgeons treat 'diversity'.
You are not a special rare unique beautiful snowflake just because your mind doesn't function normally, any more than a person with a pacemaker is. You have a condition, it needs treatment, that's all there is to it. Hopefully it isn't a chronic condition and you go back to normal soon, but if not, we pray for your improvement.
I wish to set up myself at Delhi High Court or Supreme Court.
What should be preferred path to do that amongs one of these:-
1) to join designated sr adv immediately- I have HEARD that chambers of designated sr adv have only research and briefing work and in every matter major work is already done by Law Firm People
2) To join non - designated sr adv immediately - Is this choice more wise because chambers of non designated sr adv have more learning opportunities
3) to work in law firm for a while and switch later - for the same reason as written in point (1)
Kindly guide and share insights. Thank you

The judicial officers are not allowed to maintain contact with the outside world(outside of family) during their entire career as it might influence their verdicts. The rules are even more stringent if you a judge of a special court handling sensitive matters. This wouldn't have mattered 3 decades back when there was no scope for any social outing/clubbing etc. However,in today's highly sociable world, this is a matter of concern.
On the other hand, no such restrictions exist for the JAG officers. They are free to maintain contact with anyone in the outside world(except foreigners).
Accdemically: Horrible
Practically: Amazing, might even beat tier one NLUs.
So if you are someone who needs academic pressure to excle and study or wish to do an LLM or go abroad, GLC might not be the best option. Extremly hard to get marks due to shitty syllabus and MU checking.
For placements: It is unbeatable. The sheer freedom to crave your own career path and not rely on the placement cell is unbeatable. Many intern from the first year and land tier one jobs in their 4th year itself. The placement cell in itself is amazing, regular tier one internships, annual placement drive has all tier one firms.
Conclusion: It really is an independent college. Your success or downfall is completely in your hands. Hence it can either be extremly good, or downright useless.
M1 Air in 80k are much better, the M2 pricing for storage options is absolutely horrendous.
If you feel that your skillset is not much appreciated and the workplace is getting toxic for you to sustain, then it is better you look for a change. I switched from my first job within 5 month and joined much better company wherein I worked for 1 year and again switched. If you have confidence over your skillset, then don't think twice. Also, you will get a decent hike.

- Any place can be toxic, it all depends on the people. Sure, some law forms are known toxic. But so are some Corporates too- ICICI, GE, etc., were slave masters and work-life balance was unheard of.
- It's a tough call at your age to balance work and Life. I have cursed (looks like nothing has happened to the opposite party though !!!) a million times, when sales folks send something on a friday night (or worse on saturday/sunday) and expect that you respond immediately.
- I know lots of people, who continue to get brow beaten in In-house/Law firms, as the pay cheque is important. We should respect their decision and let them choose when and how to lead their lives.
- Litigation is exhilarating only if the month end bills are not a bother, but the challenges in lit are not to be taken lightly. Clients are notoriously tough when it come to paying fees, the less said about the court system- the better. Counsels sometimes have to wait for a whole day as the list may not move at all owing to some big matter taking up the whole day. Imagine doing nothing for a whole day, when you have to be ready to argue at a few minutes notice.
So all in all, no place is kind or welcoming... it all depends on what you bring to the table. You will need to make choices- and at times the results can be disappointing, but that is life.
All the best folks.

Also the executive head of districts i.e., The DM get far lesser salary than DJ cadre even not near to his counterpart Judicial grade i.e., CJM. They just have Rs.900 higher than fresher or newly appointed Civil Judge.

Exhibit 4 (1986):
I was shocked to find a reference in your article to the effect that I am a lobbyist for certain hotel chains and the Tatas. ("The Hidden Persuaders", September 15). I find such description of a professional person as highly derogatory and defamatory. My association with the hotel industry has dated back to 1968 and I have since then specialised in the laws pertaining to the, hotel and restaurant industry. I have been legal adviser to the Oberoi group of hotels and the Taj group of hotels. I have also been advising the Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Association of India. I have never tried to procure any favours from the Government for any of my clients including the hotel chains. Insofar as your reference to Tatas is concerned, I have no connection with them except that I am the legal adviser of the Indian Hotels Company (Taj group of hotels) which is one of the Tata companies.
Fair play demands that before any comments are made which may tend to give a poor impression about a person against whom the comments are made, the person concerned should be asked to give his side of the story.
It is an admitted and well-known position that I am an active Congress worker and I am proud of that. I believe that every intellectual should have political leanings and affiliations so that the right person should enter politics. However, my connections with the ruling party would not justify the remark that I am a lobbyist.
New DelhiLalit Bhasin
Our reference to Lalit Bhasin as a "lobbyist" who is politically active and "sought after" by the major hotel chains including the Tatas, was in no way intended to be a slur on him, his integrity or reputation. There is little doubt about the high professional regard in which he is held. We did not in any way attempt to condemn his political activism.

When I find the work not interesting, it takes me hours and days to finish it. This is something which my Boss has also identified.
It takes me a lot of effort to provide detailed instructions to juniors - and I get extremely irritated (though I do not express it) when the junior has not understood it. In my mind i believe that I have explained enough and provided clear instructions, and I expect the junior to apply his mind and understand what I have not said. This happens with clients too. I get extremely irritated if I have to repeat something.
At home, i like to live alone, and get irritated if someone moves my things slightly.
I don't mind things which other people find offensive, but get irritated by things which are ok for others like a hug by a friend, etc.
It takes a great deal of effort to review a document if it is not formatted according to my style even if follows a proper formatting.
After reading a few posts on LI and watching a few movies / series, i genuinely feel something to be off with me.
Please guide how should I go about it. Pl be as detailed as possible in your instructions. Thanks.
I am made of money.
Why not?
(Advise to DU juniors- Please don't think that going to Rahul's will going to solve your problem, and don't wear the badge of DU to demoralize students of other universities).
Law firm lawyers quality is one of the best and most of them are from NLU's. All of this is based on experience and not knowledge.
(P.S.- DU 2016-19 Batch, took coaching from Rahul's in final year, sat for 3-4 mains, worked in disputes in lower courts, presently working in Reliance group (In-house) and going to join a tier-2 law firm..(Open to criticism/review/insights)
If it wasn't for their blatant lying they would certainly be below NALSAR, even nujs for that matter. Nirf really needs to avoid taking in inflated placement reports.
dude you're comment sound to be rude with few flaws not at all thanks for your time well I discussed with 2 JAG officer's one is my classmate brother, another is faculty's son, they suggested for PCS-J. Also I met Ex-JAG practicing at DHC his suggestion i found his suggestion best and said you can appear for both. So, I decided for PCS-J but will also appear for JAG, rest about joining will decide later.
If only it improved its perception score Because in other departments it's almost on par with the top 3.
The vagueness of the perception criteria is very damaging to the legitimacy of the nirf rankings and i hope we get some clear idea about how they determine it.
As someone in the comments mentioned how ignoring the perception parameter will bring NUJS to the 3rd spot.
But 8K is atrocious, especially after having taken an entire drop year to prepare. I studied for 25 days after 12th boards and got 1400. So don't take too much debt, it is an added pressure and extremely burdening.

1. NLSIU
2. NALSAR
3. NLUD
4. NUJS
5. GNLU
6. NLUJ
7. NLIU
8. RGNLU
9. RMLNLU
10. HNLU
- History doesn't matter.
- Law firm placements are only one of many aspects of NIRF. Faculty research and teaching (both of which depend on faculty quality) also matters.
- Perception also matters and the university has undoubtedly dipped in perception since the TMC came to power and the governing bodies are riddled with mediocre TMC people. The Left front appointed very eminent people from all over India in the governing bodies. Such people are absent from the governing bodies today.
Even in the criteria of Outreach and Inclusivity, one factor for calculation is the number of students from outside the state in which the university is located. A place like NLIU Bhopal has just 25 All-India merit seats out of 130+ seats with large reservations for MP domicile ST/SC, and OBC/EWS. They even have some 20-odd NRI seats but their general category non-domicile intake is abysmally low. Combine that with an administration that is not even proactive despite NLIU's large alumni base and achievements, and it's not surprising to see it ranked low. Even in CLAT preferences, it was at one point on par with NUJS for many aspirants and now it's fallen behind GNLU. If MNLU Mumbai were any good, NLIU would fall below that as well, it appears.
Also, while the perception score is definitely iffy and always has been (last year SLS had 100 perception score while NLS didn't), it does have the least weightage in the overall scoring. That's probably why NUJS wasn't hit much by it. Not that anyone in their right mind will perceive SLS or Christ as better over NUJS.
Also, a college staying out of NIRF is not helping it. I expected this from JGLS since a poor NIRF rank can easily demolish its claims as being equal to the tier-1 public law schools based on that QS ranking, but places like MNLU Mumbai, HNLU and now NLUJ should ideally always participate in a government ranking. Prospective students deserve the transparency. Even with NLUD, there are rightful concerns regarding its salary calculation even though placement numbers have been getting better. But atleast revealing that to the public will ensure there may be change in the future due to criticism/feedback. Places like HNLU which are nearly 20 years old and have had multiple batches graduate have no reason to stay out of such rankings beyond a fear of embarrassment if they are ranked low.
Same faculty will teach, some more senior.
No placement option unless you intern on your own and get a job.
Facility wise you get the same things as LLB students do, other than that you will be marginalised from most student activities which are run by LLB students.

I can wrap my head around the frivolous contentions one might have with the ranking like NLUD>NALSAR/ Symbiosis>GNLU/ RGNUL>RMLNLU but this is RIDICULOUS. On further inspection, I came to realise that it's not as rigged as one might think.
The parameters:
1. Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR):
- Student Strength including Doctoral Students (SS): Represents the total number of students enrolled in the institution, including doctoral students. It is calculated based on factors such as undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) student numbers.
- Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR): This ratio indicates the number of students per faculty member in the institution, with a focus on permanent faculty members.
- Combined metric for Faculty with Ph.D. (or equivalent) and Experience (FQE): This represents the combined score for faculty members who possess a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent and have relevant experience.
- Financial Resources and their Utilisation (FRU): Reflects the financial resources available to the institution and how effectively they are utilized.
2. Research and Professional Practice (RP):
- Combined metric for Publications (PU): Measures the number of research publications from the institution.
- Combined metric for Quality of Publications (QP): Evaluates the quality of the research publications, considering factors such as citations and impact.
- Footprint of Projects and Professional Practice (FPPP): Indicates the involvement of the institution in projects and professional practice.
3. Graduation Outcomes (GO):
- Combined metric for Placement and Higher Studies (GPH): Reflects the percentage of students placed in jobs or pursuing higher studies after graduation.
- Metric for University Examinations (GUE): Evaluates the performance of students in university examinations.
- Median Salary (GMS): Represents the median salary earned by graduates from the institution.
- Metric for Number of Ph.D. Students Graduated (GPHD): Measures the number of Ph.D. students successfully completing their degrees.
4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI):
- Percentage of Students from Other States/Countries (Region Diversity RD): Represents the percentage of students enrolled from other states within the country or other countries.
- Percentage of Women (Women Diversity WD): Indicates the percentage of female students enrolled in the institution.
- Economically and Socially Challenged Students (ESCS): Evaluates the representation and support provided to economically and socially challenged students.
- Facilities for Physically Challenged Students (PCS): Reflects the availability of facilities and support for students with physical disabilities.
5. Perception (PR):
- Peer Perception: Employers & Academic Peers (PR): Represents the perception of the institution among employers and academic peers.
At first glance, you might not be able to discern the premeditated fallacies behind these rankings.
The truth lies in the calculations of these parameters, for example, SS would take into account the number of students enrolled under the Ph.D. course which would inherently put institutes that don't enroll higher Ph.D. candidates at a disadvantage as per the devised formula.
If we take a look at the weightage of FSR & FQE, we would find that it rewards more for the quantity of the faculty members rather than the quality of them. You can take FSR (30 marks) simply as a student-faculty ratio, while the FQE only takes into account those faculties that are Ph.D. + accounts for the experience they have. Some universities scored full on FSR but struggled to fetch even 10 marks in FQE.
ESCS which evaluates the representation and support provided to economically and socially challenged students is calculated on the basis of the percentage of UG students being provided FULL tuition fee reimbursement by the institution to pursue their degree programs. I mean- there are programmes in many NLUs/private unis where they award percentage scholarships for meritorious students coming from SC/ST category but this doesn't take it into account until and unless it is fully covered, I don't get why.
Coming to the PR (Peer Perception) scores, they are by far the most rigged aspect of the ranking. NUJS scored a humble 50.8, while Christ University and Indian law institute astonishingly scored 61.15 and 74.17 respectively. Apart from the Top 3, none of the universities managed to get close to Rizzed perception of these two institutes.
To sum it up, this is a pretty useless ranking with no real-world application, going by the metrics alone I wouldn't be surprised if an unknown university manages to beat NLS if it really wants to. And the most significant things that a student realistically looks upon are placements and scope for higher education which doesn't seem to be a priority here since it constitutes just 16.25% of all the parameters.
Note: All the statistics are verified from the official website itself and if someone wants to look into the formulas then he/she shall go to: https://www.nirfindia.org/nirfpdfcdn/2022/framework/Law.pdf
A good article I read on this issue last year by GS Bajpai: Rankings that make no sense - The Hindu
The idea posed by the OP was that MNLU-N is on a downward trajectory and he/she also reasoned his/her assertions. I think everyone got what he/she meant and it wasn't necessarily untrue.
There have been many administrative issues resulting in a situation where an NLU sank. Take NLIU for instance which is the 2nd NLU to be established after NLS, when the director resigned after a week of student protests, and the registrar was suspended for selling fake degrees in the same term. If that episode did not happen, one could argue that it would've not been where it is currently placed.
You may also take the example of HNLU, whose perception sank after the perennial hard-handedness of the administration came to light in 2018.
So, an NLU isn't as sink-proof as his highness might think.
PS: use the tags judiciously.
1. Exam:
JAG-There is no written exam for entry into the JAG branch of Army and Navy(no direct recruitment in IAF, offrs absored from the regular cadre). Vacancies are mostly in single digit(6-7 in Army & 2-3 in Navy) .All law graduates attaining a stipulated %age during their graduation can appear for the rigorous Services Selection Board(SSB) which is a five day interview process.
PCSJ-On the other hand, there is a state judicial services exam conducted by the respective state judicial services commn. In some states, the HC also conducts the recruitment process.
2. Certainity of the exam
Since the entry into the JAG is conducted by the SSB under the purview of the UPSC, there is a certainity (Notifications come out every year) of the recruitment taking place every year. No undue delay in notification/release of. result etc
The PCSJ exam is highly certain and notification based, for instance the UPPCSJ took place after a gap of five years which adds to the anxiety of the candidates and is highly unfair to say the least. Coming to the results, there is no calender which is followed. Everything takes its own sweet time. There are lots of instances of favouritism in these state level exams. Thus, the candidate is forced to appear for multiple state judiciary exams.
3. Perception of the exam
Recruitment into the Armed Forces(Army, Navy, IAF) is controlled by the UPSC which reflects that the entire process of recruitment is fair and transparent, like all other UPSC exams.
Since the State PSCs are regularly marred by complaints of irregularity, favouritism and corruption, this generally gives an impression that it is a typical state level exam.
4. Perception of the service:
The State PCSJ appointed cannot be compared with the Armed forces or the Civil Servants recruited by the UPSC. At best, they can be compared to any officer selected through the state administrative services, state police services etc.
5. Pay and allowances
The pay and allowances of the Armed Forces are the highest amongst any govt service in the country, even higher than the All India Services(IAS,IPS, IFS). It is noteworthy to note that the only defences officers are paid pension unlike other services like Judiciary which have reverted to the New Pension Scheme. (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/defence-personnel-get-higher-pay-than-civilian-counterparts/articleshow/49886547.cms).
I haven't come to the allowances part yet. The JAG offrs are paid higher than the regular offrs due to the Non Practising Allowance(NPA) which is added to their regular salary. On top of that, JAG offrs are provided fully furnished( accommodations to their place of posting(Unlike judicial offrs who are given a meagre allowance for furniture, tech etc once in 3-4 yrs). You don't have to spend a single penny on your accommodation after shifting to a new town. In field areas JAG offrs are entitled to keep 2 accommodations(in any city) They can also avail free flight tickets for themselves, spouse and children ( Certain stipulated number of tickets). Until recently, the offrs could easily travel via IAF jets while coming home on leave, the rule has now been changed which allows the offrs to travel on chartered Flights(Similar to regular flight, these flights are run by airlines specifically for Armed Forces without any charge, however family members cannot travel). Air India also provides 50 % concession to defence personnel and their families(Rebate in other airlines is a maximum of 25pc).
Unlike the judicial services. the children of the defence offrs can avail all benefits( treatment in Military Hospitals, access to CSD) until they are 25 years of age(21 in case of other govt services).
The JAG officers are provided accommodation in military cantonments which is generally the cleanest and greenest part of any town. However small the town, it will have all top notch facilities ranging from Golf Courses, Race Course, Clubs, Swimming Pools sports club, tax-free booze to theatres( PS- free of cost). On the contrary, a State judicial services offices is provided nothing more than an accommodation(that too in a crowded area in the middle of the town) if he is posted(mostly) in a Tier 3 city/ rural area.
6. Training and Posting
The initial training of JAG offrs takes place in Officers Training Academy, Chennai(Naval Academy, Kerala) for Navy JAg offrs) After commissioning the training is done in Indian Military Institute, Delhi, technically all big metropolitan cities. As far as posting is concerned, JAG offrs of the army are not posted to far flung and remote areas like the judicial offrs( Civil Judge Junior Division of Balasore or Jalgaon). They are mostly(90 pc of their service) posted in Command/Corps Headquarters( All capital cities or top 2-3 cities of a state). The posting scene is even better in the Navy where JAG offrs hardly get posted to any city other than Mumbai, Kochi, Vizag, Calcutta etc.
Another fact which needs to be taken in into consideration is that the transfer of judical offrs takes place only in a particular state(Eg Rajasthan), which further reduces the chances of staying in a big city. You will not get posted to Jaipur more than once or twice in your career.Since it is a state service, there is no concept of central deputation(Delhi posting).
JAG offrs travel through the length and breadth of the country on postings and also get an opportunity to get posted in Delhi.
7. Promotion:
A judicial offr would start off as a civil judge(Jr divsion) and can at most rise to an ADJ/DJ( Fag end of career). Someone commented that a civil judge could be promoted to DJ within 15 yrs, I doubt its veracity as a DJ is generally a person who is 55 + yrs of age. A jag offr starts off as a Lieutenant and could rise to the rank of a Major General(JAG of Indian Army). Again, someone commented that only a few rise to the rank of a Maj Gen. Agreed, but in the Armed forces even if you dont get promoted, your pay scale is equated to the higher ranks, unlike the judiciary where the pay scales are not equated. So an ADJ will continue to draw lesser salary than a DJ even if he has missed the promotion. On the contrary, a Colonel/Brigadier's pay is equated to a a major General/Lt Gen even if he doesn't make the cut.

We were called for the final interviews (yes, we had those) according to our ranks in the entrance exam. Once that was done, we were sent to the hostel (MHOR and WHOR, IYKYK) to get our rooms allocated.
In other words, once upon a time, first year hostel rooms were allocated according to your rank in the qualifying exam. From the second year onwards, you could pick your roommates.
I have been hearing good things about TMNLU as of late, so that place is improving. I can't really speak for the others. Most new NLUs are kinda bad and not worth it.
P.S- 23 People out of 60
You know to feel like a God who gets to feel proud about having crafted a new personality single handedly.
There's no fun with NLU grads who are mostly already moulded and know what to do.
It's quite possible that he wants to derive satisfaction from moulding impressionable law students, not the highly proficient know all NLUites who are quite intimidating in their knowledge and expression + ability to question and correct seniors.
I will be joining tnnlu , if I give my 101% can I secure a tier 1 job?
And what are the placement statistics there?
Is that discrimination?
As someone who joined T1 out of lawschool and moved on to other things. I believe law firm salaries have peaked for freshers, and will remain the same number just like WITCH salaries. There is an article on LegallyIndia from 2014 where Khaitan hiked their salaries to 15.2.
Almost 0 increase in 10 years, where as so many costs have doubled or tripled, law school fees. Law firms have started making very little sense. Although, the pay hikes become significant as you get PQE.
Without a doubt, it has been the incessant bad publicity due to incessant toxicity in the '24 batch which has hit the public perception rating issued by NIRF yesterday. With GNLU, performing exceptionally well in all the other factors, and even surprassing its higher peers in most of these aspects, it was only due to a dismal rating in public perception which pushed it to the 7th position. I, being a student of the University would like to point out that our immediate senior batch, '24 batch has been extremely shameless and some students are even proud of having got the tag of being the most toxic, selfish, sadistic batch across NLUs. The outcome is for everyone to see.
I, by taking this platform as a useful means, would like to apologise to the Admin and every other stakeholder who had worked tirelessly for bringing the ratings above, however this shameless batch has once again being the cause of our downfall. For those who keep on defending that there are only a few students who don't like the batch, I can assure you as a junior that having talked to most of the people in the batch, I can safely conclude that the amount of back'bitching, selfish talks and groupism is something which no other batch can emulate, that is no other batch in any other NLU even comes close to this type of infighting happening within the batch.
Please treat this post as my sincere apologies to the stakeholders involved who had worked tirelessly day in and day out, but at the end came short because of this stupid senior batch of ours who haven't even bothered to acknowledge that there is a problem in the batch, inspite of such much of evidence. Hopefully next year when this utterly shameless batch if not there the ranking would improve drastically. (LI just allow this post, this is not a troll comment, but rather consists of an apology and a hope).
