There absolutely are people in this thread arguing that aspiring to the rhodes is an elitist snobbish bigoted (implied casteist) thing to do and that there is somehow more virtue to be found in being some "unsung hero" that is not there in being famous and still a hero. Growing up poor- i thought there was virtue simply in getting a job and working at it and paying taxes and helping the people around me, my dreams were somewhat small. And I thought that was somehow more virtuous than trying to be India's Bill Clinton- because I resigned myself to the idea that it would be impossible to break into that sphere of influence. But that was an adaptive preference, not a true choice. I was justifying my choices rather than actually being courageous enough to put myself out there and try and go for the gold. It wasnt virtuous- it was a self fulfilling prophecy.
The UPSC is accessible in that more people know what it is and how they could try to get in, but being successful in the exams and in your career still has many access barriers. If your parents cannot afford to support you for years while you do exam prep, if you cannot afford all the prep courses and materials, that is not equally accessible. And even if you struggle against that to get selected- you still might not have a very impactful career because you dont know how to play the political game right or because you might not have adequate protection from the political game because of your social status.
Given the odds, I think a young person in a law school in india today might actually have a better chance at the rhodes if they gave it a shot. Its not so hard to top exams at the university level or to obtain recommendation letters after internships, it might be a little hard to obtain information about the application process but most rhodes scholars are happy to share their knowledge with aspirants. You just need to pull up the courage to email them. When I was in law school, only one person found the courage to apply to rhodes and she got it. She wasnt top of class- but near enough (rank 6/7 if I remember correctly), she applied to internships in the regular way and earned rec letters and she hit the jackpot partly because she worked hard through the five years in law school in a dedicated way. Many of the people who topped then wished they had the courage to apply- they had the grades and the letters, but they settled for a bank job or a firm job or a litigation job because they were afraid to do this thing that seemed unreachable. Many more people didnt bother working hard through law school because they knew they only had to be in the top half to get a day z job and thats all they allowed themselves to want. In truth- i think ten/ fifteen people from my batch had the talent and capability to get rhodes if they had worked hard and been courageous and resourceful. Its shocking that even today, only two three people from each law school batch even entertain the idea of applying to the rhodes. Thats a problem, only if more people apply to the rhodes can the rhodes go to more and more diverse candidates. If you self select out- then obviously the pool of people who get it will not be as diverse. And calling people who value or aspire to the rhodes elitist snobs doesnt actually solve the problem.

Helped a client fix a case of his in front of the apex market regulator. Put in a lot of effort and convincing on both ends. Lot of back and forth. Finally Deal done. The officer (in the regulator) backed out at last moment yesterday.
Was gonna make 1cr. in the deal. Lost it now. First time doing such things and amounts to a big zero.
Wasted tonnes of energy and time on it also. Pissed off as hell. Ruined a lot of effort and my weekend too.
Now the client's gonna be pissed at me too.
Note - Self righteous people / trolls / Moralistic advice givers please don't comment. You are not welcome.
Rant over. Frustration Continues.
As for the NLU thing, I think you're playing into (that comment's) OP's hands. Anyone who did some basic research would know that the NLU institutions are public. And you still haven't responded to the IDIA point. It is exactly the point the angry guy is making. IDIA may have been at a public uni, but it ain't government-supported.
And as for this entire thing of Free School Meals getting cancelled, that is doubtful (I don't know enough), and the UCU protest, I really get the anger on this one. Just because other countries have problems means we should as well? You UPSC types have learned way too well from the Russians. Classic Russian dark humour: things are shitty elsewhere, so let's not do anything to ensure they become less shitty here, as long as that means that our own lives are not-so-shitty. The classic UPSC mentality.
They also arrange writing competition with internship opportunity and they post Blog- writable content on LinkedIn. Their goal is to serve the community.
ICL and others blogs work for their names; whereas, IRCCL works for students.
[Notable difference: 1. Competition with internship opportunity, 2. promotes writing culture via LinkedIn posts, and 3. They provide helpful reviews for rejected articles so that authors can rewrite and publish elsewhere [MOST IMPORTANT & COMPLETELY SELFLESS].
I'll summarize it in brief. Initially I was interested in corporate and used to take up a lot of online legal writing internships to get some publications thinking it would help.. but it did not help. So I just went with the flow and took whatever random internships I could secure with help of our placement cell and sites like Law bhoomi and Lawoctopus. Now I have done 4 offline internships during law school.. Disputes at a T1 firm, IP at a boutique law firm, IP internship at FICCI, and one internship at some Z tier boutique firm where I got random and diverse work. The online ones were all legal writing or drafting ones. Is it possible for me to join a law firm or an in house counsel role? If yes then what skills I must develop beforehand and if not then what else shall I do? The point is that I want to start working and more importantly earning ASAP while I figure out life cause being both jobless and lost would be bad for mental health.
Looking forward to your insights!
There are schizophrenics who think that theyre actually a dog or a chicken- does that sincere belief make them a dog or a chicken? Clearly its not just self perception that makes identity. If most of society would look at a butch lesbian and call her a man- does she become a man? is she no longer a woman because society has tarnished her that way? clearly its not external validation either. If most of society believes that a flying monkey god moved a mountain for an herb- or if most of society believes we should stone gay people- does that make those things true? Should we be basing laws on beliefs of this nature that are unevidenced and have no basis in material reality?
Try to think what your future clients would want to know and blog around that - start your own blog - thank me later
I pity...
This profession attracts only Grade C students.
If gender is a social role and sex is based on biology. Please explain to me what social role men or women are playing in society. What is the social role that transgender women feel like they’re playing that they should be lumped in with cis women ? Explain how it’s not based on stereotypes?
What are provisions for men and women provided by law ? Be specific ? As far as I know the constitution prohibits discrimination based on sex except to provide protections for females in certain areas. Do we not think that women - females - deserve protection from sex based crimes and deserve maternity benefits and deserve investment in all women schools and colleges ? Do you think it’s unfair that men don’t get to use those ?
So anyone who isn’t following a male dress code or behaves effeminately isn’t a man ? Most gay men dress and act differently- some gay men are extremely flamboyant - do you think they aren’t men ? Should we let the most orthodox and bigoted members of society decide what men and women are ? If a little boy wants to play with dolls should we rush him to get medically altered so he’s now a “girl”? That seems the opposite of progressive no ? Most Indian men don’t have body builder bodies - are they not men then ? If a man is born with a micro penis ( an intersex condition btw) is he not a man ?
If it’s just saying you’re not a man - why is it limited to gender ? Can I say I’m a Dalit and claim reservations ? Can I say I’m black ? Can I say I identify as wealthy and the bank has to give me money ? It’s the only identity group you can identify into ? Why ? Do souls have genders ?
1. Relentless trolling and vicious attacks against Sudhir Krishnaswamy, by jealous tier 2 college guys who have never set foot inside NLSIU and are resentful that Sudhir is improving the institution with his excellent faculty hires.
2. Similarly, non-stop attacks against Jindal despite Jindal doing better than many NLUs in the placements and foreign scholarships scene — again, by jealous and resentful people, who are also angry that Jindal-ites are wealthy (as if you guys don’t aspire to become wealthy and send your children to good universities).
3. Likewise, attacks against NUJS NRI quota students. FYI some of the most successful NUJS alumni are from the NRI quota and an NRI quota girl alum has just been awarded the Salve scholarship at Oxford this year.
4. Then, further hate against those going abroad for LLMs. You are either a traitor to your country and a bootlicker of the white race, or a spoilt rich kid — because, of course, we must opt for third-rate LLM courses at NLUs and be called “Lallams” by you lot!
5. Comments in Hindi, in blatant disregard of those who are not comfortable with Hindi. I speak Hindi and have scored good grades in Hindi in school, but I would never speak in Hindi in front of a pan-India crowd, as there are people who are from the South, Bengal, North East etc. Please show this courtesy too. It’s absolutely fine if you throw in a common Hindi word here and there, eg bindaas, jugaad or chapri ( as I have done). The English language happily absorbs words from foreign languages. But please don’t type entire sentences in Hindi!
6. Finally, a sharp increase in aggressive, abusive, incel-like language (which is strangely missed by moderators).
Downvote and abuse me all you want, you’ll only be validating my comment.
Thought you were being hyper but then I saw the intro page for nluj 29
Not to undermine any of the Rhodes scholars. Feel free to admire them and aspire to it. The mistake this thread makes is in underestimating the UPSC's capacity to change your life and the power it gives you to change many people's lives.
How many of us get such access?
VCs in NLUs too get the job through connections, access etc. And then it becomes all about personal enrichment, traffic in favours etc. Maybe RK is doing that as well. But the univ has been a great investment for Jindal and it has done very well in a short span of time.
Almost all NLU VCs would have completely wasted similar opportunity, tenure etc. For all his faults, Messiah on paper has been very successful at NLS
Some names I can think of -
1. Team at Spice Route - they did wonderful job with salary marketing and creating a buzz
2. Yavnika Shah - Induslaw, guess she has worked as external consultant too for law firms
3. Pintu Babu - NDA - He is very active in the space
4. Priyan Garg - Khaitan - The oldest name I have heard of in the space who markets his own brand quite well
1. Enroute Law (Don't respond after collecting CVs)
2. Avimukta (Same issue)
3. Vahura (Max PR)
Note: Thanks to the admin for marking it "trollish".

PS: I would personally suggest using "rat's fart", rather than "rat's ass" from next time - personally, I think "rat's fart" is more hard-hitting and conveys the point more effectively.
Your precious Britain has had its school free lunch program cancelled and its university staff are out protesting because their work conditions are terrible. The irony is that this access to work you love so much is a public program. Rhodes scholars can't make that in India but bureaucrats and politicians can. If you want to sit somewhere else and complain, that's within your rights. You certainly have good reasons to complain. But it is these UPSC people you look down your nose at who might make things better. If you want to be childish enough to extend your ire against a few public servants into a vendetta against all of them, feel free.
Saw this first hand
Literally they're the most noob, nerdy, wannabe cool like literally if you see their intros, you'll find everyone's perfect and all rounder, doing everything right, whatever whatever etc.

It would be helpful if you could maybe share about your experience, resources you used to prepare, generally share about your preparation process, some guidance on what to expect, how its different from an interview with a law firm/lawyer, any helpful tips, etc.
TIA!
I'm the first to admit that it takes an incredible amount of privilege to even dream of getting the rhodes scholarship. I went to law school not knowing what it is, and not even dreaming about applying because it just seemed so unreachable. Years later I wish I had given myself the opportunity to apply and to work toward it. It's a good goal. The worst thing about being poor is not really the lack of material resources- you can get around that. The worst thing is the soft bigotry of low expectations- from others and from ourselves. Even your dreams are poor. The system wins when poor people convince themselves they better not aspire to things like rhodes, that those things are not made for them and therefore aspiring to those things is not desirable, and in fact, people who think that those things are desirable must be bigoted and elitist and snobbish.
Getting the rhodes scholarship undeniably makes your life better and launches your career into a new and better stratosphere. You go from wanting a bank job to turning down offers from McKinsey. Rhodes scholars have undeniably greater impact in society than the thousands of IAS/ IPS/ IRS officers in this country. I couldn't name more than 5 top level IAS officers who have done things that have changed the course of history, I can name many many rhodes scholars who have done that, Girish Karnad, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Sagarika Ghose, Sanjeev Sanyal, Menaka Guruswamy in this country, but in other countries, I mean Bill Clinton, Hubble, Naomi Wolf, Ronan Farrow- American rhodes scholars alone have changed the course of history.
Why do poor students do this? why do we not give ourselves a chance and try and find virtue in a lack of ambition or a lack of traditional success? How is that not self injurious?
For what its worth, many wonderful rhodes scholars come from humble backgrounds. Girish Karnads mom was a poor widow all through his childhood, Sudhirs Krishnaswamys dad was a watchman, Bill Clinton was raised by a single mom on the brink of poverty. Rahul Bajaj went to- what? Nagpur University? And hes blind- and theres an aspirational success story if one wants it- im sure there are others but I wont go on. The point being- we need not constrain ourselves to only what society has deemed is good for us.
I really think we need to stop thinking about identity as destiny and burrowing into that.
Usually High Court disciplines trial judges for giving bail. Because HC feels Trial Court Judges will threaten them. High Court Judges come from nepotistic families. Whereas Trial Judge's are selected on basis of a competitive exam.
A young Judge in Rouse Avenue Court risked her whole life and career to give the bail to Aravind Kejriwal.
Even thou Delhi High Court called her bail order perverse and delegitimised the trial judge.
She will embolden new trial judges to have a backbone.
Article on her
- Special Judge Niyay Bindu has served as a senior civil judge in the Rohini court, Delhi North West district.
- She has served as senior civil judge in Dwarka.
- She is well-versed with both civil and criminal law, according to reports.
In the order granting relief to Kejriwal, which was made available on Friday, the vacation judge held that prima facie, his guilt was yet to be established. “It may be possible that some persons known to the applicant are having involvement in an offence….but the ED has failed to give any direct evidence against the applicant in respect of the proceeds of crime," the judge said.
She also questioned the ED’s silence on Kejriwal’s assertion that he was arrested in the money laundering case related to the alleged excise scam without having been named in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s First Information Report (FIR) or the ECIR registered by the anti-money laundering agency. Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) is ED’s version of an FIR.
“This is also noticeable that ED is silent about the facts as to how the proceeds of crime have been utilized in Assembly Elections in Goa by AAP as, admittedly, after about two years, the bigger portion of the alleged amount remains to be traced out," the judge said.

You'll be doing corp transactions under him. Dispute resolution is so different, I don't know how to answer but I don't think there's any correlation so as to say if it'd be easy/tough to transition that way.
NLIU vs NLUJ- the traditional one
GNLU vs NUJS- the modern one
I am doing my own research but I’d like to know what’s the general consensus out there. Thanks!
Students of these, please help me out. Should I take them if I get a chance. Are they worth it, also which one to prefer.
None of the Nlus release proper placement stats. When someone files an rti this is the picture that comes up. Nlsiu hasnt released it for so long and when someone asks for it all nls fanboys come down hard defending it. Even iit-b and iima release placement stats every year but nlus cant do so. You cant place everybody but atleast say how many you did. Nlus claim to be premier institutes but literally dont bother with the most important stat.
