Grew up on a diet of crime fiction (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle + all the 'Queens of Crime'). Was good at debating and public speaking as extracurricular activities at school and enjoyed them; had a reputation for performing well in English and History (did well at Maths, Physics and Chemistry too, but you wouldn't find me dead in a ditch reading in my spare time about that). Never could keep my mouth shut, loved to argue with people (drove my mother up the wall many times, in the process), was, like Hermione, (justifiably) called a 'bossy knowitall' by my mates at school, loved reading the rulebook in situations where rules were involved and arguing about interpretations of rules, how to bend them and so on; I used to, and continue to, read the newspapers every day like a religious habit (The Guardian, The London Times (especially the law section of that paper, which is fab) and the Financial Times). On top of this, wanted some money in life. Did an evaluation similar to what Dr Watson does of Holmes, his character, his strengths and weaknesses in 'A Study in Scarlet' (wrote this stuff in bullet-point form), and thought, 'which profession corresponds with most or all of this?'; the answer was law (though obviously good money doesn't necessarily come with working in the law).

Took up english grads and then left it for law school next year when my friend decided to take law. Business law attracted me from the very beginning because I would read up for hours how small businesses navigated obstacles to become the behemoths they are today.

If I could go back in time would probably again choose a career in law.

The "Tax Lawyer" is such bad stamp that it frustrates you to the core. Headhunters are just not interested in knowing your talents and no place takes you seriously because it is their incompetence that they dont understand tax.

I was from the top 3 NLUs and got into indirect tax out of sheer coincidence. Being in the industry for so long, I felt my talents and potential was being wasted. Neither there was job satisfaction nor pay parity. If only I had gotten into any other kind of litigation, literally any other kind, all the opportunity doors would be open.

Differs from person to person, no one size fits all approach. In any case, Ask your CA/ consultant/tax lawyer to tabulate your liability for Old and for new regime. In any case for AY 24-25 default tax regime is new tax regime for businessmen & professionals. If your income is in the range of 15-20 lakhs you will realise that the new regime slashes your tax bill by nearly half.

The domains may share such a relationship while at work. That too between criminal lawyers and forensic people only. Same relationship is also shared arguably between a medical specialist in post-mortem examination and criminal lawyers including prosecutors. However, the question is how does this make a law grad from NFSU more employable? They won't be required to do the job of the forensic expert, regardless of whether they might have had a separate elective paper or two in related fields. Any recruiter including the government will employ forensic grads/masters/PhDs for such roles. Hence setting aside the rhetoric, can you please illustrate how do the new Acts make NFSU law grads more employable? Of course, if someone has got both a forensic masters degree and law degree, then it will be better for their career, but that has always been the case for dual degree holders.

Both Dinoo and Kirthi are relatively inexperienced partners (around a year old) - why is AZB hiring partners from the outside, instead or promoting home grown talent? Honestly, the most straightforward way would be to read the orders and judgements given by DHC IPD judges. Everyday atleast 2-3 interim injunctions are granted which contain detailed analysis.

Go to DHC website, choose by judge name. Since the IP has just changed, search for the last two judges - Sanjeev Narula and Anish Dayal. Go through the kind of decisions that they have given in past 6 months. It'll help you formulate the kind of advice you'd give to clients relating to contentious trademark issues.

Bro, it's not about NMIMS or other college. I can assure you that NMIMS kids have better knowledge and grip over the subjects as compared to other college students. No offense to any nlu or other pvt university but I myself experienced at my internship at 'SOME' students from nlu do not deserve that nlu seat for sure. They are because of the reservation and flexing their nlu tag.

At the end, we cannot deny that pvt university students faces lot of challenges and discrimination by the top tier law firms. But still many are shining out because of their hardwork.

Im inferring that you mean NUJS. Its really not that big of a deal. I would not call it a mistake at all. I had the same dilemna and chose NUJS too because of my own personal reasons. NLUD has a better campus, better hostels. Thats it. Otherwise its all basically the same. The outcome of attending either of these colleges will be the same. People here exaggerate a lot. Its their way of expressing college pride I guess. But these top 3-4 NLUS are all the same it terms of outcome. Difference is negligible. Dont trust LI its all jobless delusional students

Like how can they be so irresponsible and incompetent that they fail to release shortlist even after such a long time. DT - entry barriers and its rare that you will be able to enter this space if you are a non-CA lawyer. Even if you enter this space very limited options in future.

IDT - There might be few openings for non-CA lawyer in practices such as GST or Customs.

a. Customs Practice -

Hardly any firms + low pay in long run (at some point you will think of switching practice area (for ex. Corporate) which will not be possible if you have spend considerable time in this field) + restricted growth + good switching/lateral options? = almost none. + CAs too don’t prefer this practice area in general (for a reason)

b. GST practice -

you will always hear that you are not good at it because you didn’t do CA. Less preference in lateral hiring. Your team will be full of CAs always who will frown upon you. Plus in-house options almost negligible.

To conclude (if you spend reasonable time in this space) you were never a CA and you did not remain a lawyer too. (Only for a non-CA lawyer)

Advice- If you are stuck in this situation do a CA or leave/switch ASAP.

Stop spreading rumours without knowing the facts. This just highlights your lack of awareness. In Tamil Nadu, government-provided vehicles are required to be replaced every 10 years. It's been a decade since the first car, so it's time for a replacement. The current Vice Chancellor has a say in what car to buy.

If you plan to opt for being a corporate lawyer, then you are probably slightly better off with your decision. If litigation, then locational advantage of NLUD would have been better compared to all others except perhaps NLSIU being able to top it by sheer rep and alum connect. Faculty-wise there is no longer any difference between NLUD and the other top NLUs, though here too NLSIU is much ahead as on date. NLUD has got a lower batch size (though that too is increasing) and fewer quota, so those are pluses. They do have functional research centres of repute like CCG and Project 39A, though the CIIPC is no longer as good post-Arul's departure. However, students from other NLUs can and do work for these centres too, so not much of a loss. Post-RS, NLUD has lost quite a bit of its shine and that's a fact. Nor do they focus that much on campus placements, though any student desirous of getting a job would probably land one if they spend the five years wisely. However, that's true for the other NLUs too that you mentioned. If you are interested in UPSC, DJS etc., then also the locational advantage of NLUD comes into play for external coaching. Overall, if you are in a top 4 NLU, then it makes no sense to lose a year just to get into NLUD.

This comment is untrue and unfair. The cost of the car is not 35 lakhs, it is much less. Also, a VC of a University is a senior person having a lot of prestige and stature. Do you expect such a person to move around in an Alto? If junior IAS officers can get a nice car, why can’t the VC of an NLU, at age 70, have a nice car? If you want to attract good talent, for the post, you have to give such perks at least. Please remember that the person you are talking about is s former NLSIU professor.

I cleared CLAT and AILET in 2023 and after excruciating contemplation I chose to go to an NLU that is considered in the top 4 (I do not want to disclose which one) instead of NLUD. They also pay all interns 16k, give all of them snacks and unlimited chai/coffee - and dinners and cab as well, if you're working late - which other firm even cares?

Brother, first of all without a shadow of doubt in terms of exposure and market perception KCO Mumbai is the leader in terms of M&A, only Veritas comes close in some aspects. Work life balance is better at both KCO M and CAM B, maybe better at KCO (verified from insiders working at all four places). Indus Delhi barely has transactional work and Trilegal Gurgaon is a different problem all together (speak to associates working there). In terms of salaries quoted Indus and KCO would pay the least.

If I had all 4 options open I would move with KCO as my first and having CAM B as my second back-up. With Tri and Indus at 3 and 4.

Prof Nagraj has left two NLUs midway amid a controversial tenure. He has converted TNNLU into a gloomy place. He operates like a black box. Nobody knows who is in real decision-making in the university. He is writing an obituary on freedom of speech on campus. He is just inculcating fear through his non-communication. If TNNLU is lucky, he will leave this place soon; otherwise, people must go.

You can start by reading the IP subject manual that CS kids read. Its a good explainer in brief. Also, while you go through the bare acts, read the IP manuals of the respective IP offices. E.g. reading the Trade Marks Act by itself will only confuse you, read the Trade Marks Registry's manual side by side. All available for free online.

For internships, look towards small boutique firms

Academics in NMIMS is pretty rigorous due to its strict attendance policy and mid terms. You'll have to study out of compulsion. Not saying everyone knows everything but just that the academics are much more structured and relevant than any other Mumbai University allied colleges.

Lissie was too rigid, but Nags is not. You should maintain a good rapport with the EC to get things in your favour and Nags is doing it right.

Nagaraj is doing a great job at TNNLU, significantly improving university policies to be more student-friendly. They are currently establishing a student body, a task that has failed repeatedly in the past. His administrative skills surpass those of Lizzie, and although some policies are questionable, he has made substantial improvements in academic-related policies. Also, placement rates have increased under his leadership.
