thought my NLS background would help me but LLM students have no value whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong but my class cohort is extremely sweet and we get along quite well. But the JD students look down upon us….it gets really monotonous as they feel that we are somewhat less inferior and shabby compared to their high horses. Goddamit 😭

B.A. LLB is the equivalence degree to a JD in the United States. LLM is usually just an additional option if you want to qualify the bar exams there. The US cohort including the Indian Americans don’t take LLM seriously at all, plus the prestige factor lies with the JD making the LLM students less shiny. Plus, you have to understand that Harvard students are known to be arrogantly snobbish when it comes to their law programme. My friend from Virginia who is pursuing his JD at NYU stated that HLS even crushed Yale law grads time to time. So it’s not uncommon for them to look down upon a law school which isn’t well known in the whole of Asia. Let’s be honest, even your Indian peers (especially your batchmates) salivate to even get their journals in the Harvard student law review where even the JD students are given first preference. Also, it’s incredibly harder to get into the Harvard JD programme when you compare it to their LLM programme. LSAT US (not india) is not a joke. Either you need to have a certain 175ish grade / life altering extra curricular or legacy admission (but that too if your dad or uncle is a governor). For LLM there is no exam and let’s be honest even if by any great misfortune the HLS students come across something like CLAT- they will start laughing at us despite the unpredictability the exam holds every year. NLUs are not even as prestigious as IITs (which are quite well known to Harvard and MIT grads, even Yale too), so it’s difficult if you expect Harvard to take note of us. Plus, the inferiority of top Indian law schools are exposed vividly when we ourselves including the NLS cohort refer certain institutions as ‘Harvard of the East’ / ‘Yale of the East’. We already admit that their institution is already bigger, just hang out with your cohort and mingle with those JD folks who are actually nice, not everyone can be bad.

Simply by bringing some uniformity in your standards. There are even abusive comments which you have published in the past and then removed once pointed out. I am not sure how those slipped past anyone who reads a comment before publishing it. Maybe make a sticky thread with some ground rules and examples?

It's truth, this comment is. I once made a similar comment attempting to impose a reality check surrounding the Oxford BCL, and these good-for-nothing moral police who are guardians of this platform marked that as trollish as well. As another comment on this thread has said, OP should just put their head down, actually put in some work in life and stop bitching about people. You guys treat your own LLM students like this, just deal with it. Also, I have lived in multiple western countries, and can tell you that your typical person there has a lot more work in life than to be snobbish and high-nosed. Does that mean there are no snobbish and high-nosed people in western countries? Obviously not! But the way OP is talking about this stuff gives a very incomplete picture. And frankly, if this is the way you write and you are really from NLS (and not just a random troll who actually hasn't gone to either NLS or HLS), then, with regards to the HLS JD cohort's snobbishness, I'd tell them, 'bring it on, these ***'s deserve it'. I beg to differ. This was true may be 15 years back. These days I will say anyone who dares to open a newspaper and has kids or family members who are about to go to college or exploring options will have at some point of time known about the existence of national law universities. So decently exposed people do know that something like NLUs exist, although they may not know what a NLS or a NASLAR is.

A) you will never even set foot into their llm programme (which is looked down upon by the jd students) and B) stop calling yourself the ‘Harvard of the east’ then? Joining Harvard is exceptional if it’s JD. Period.

Not just NLS. In all the top NLUs, LLMs are seen as people (unless if they actually want to be a professor, which by the way are a very very few minority students) who think they will do a 12 months vacation course and get the same branding as an LLB or same day zero as an LLB. That is heights of delusion, not knowing the reality in your own country. I have seen these people calling themselves a NLS and NALSAR grads until truth comes out in interview. I mean if they were not there just for the tag they would have proudly called themselves a Delhi University grad or a Lucknow University grad or whatever. The point is be proud of what you are and instead of running after false name tags why not strive and slog your way up the ladder.

When you write such English as "less inferior" of course you will attract scorn. But it's likelier that your short exposure to American culture has not allowed you to understand the critical differences in behavior there. You are perhaps unused to the stiff winds of egalitarian competition untouched by caste prerogative.

I did llm at fancy us university. I suggest you get over this fast. Its a waste of time and money and energy to sit around bitching about how other people perceive you. Youre there to improve your career. You only have a year to do it. Focus on that. Whatever it is you need to learn to compete- learn it. People would give an arm and a leg to go to HYS/ Ivy. Most people wont in their lives be able to do it.Dont waste the damn opportunity.

Lallums have earned it themselves by sacrificing their own individuality and by disowning their own grad school, just to get that NLU tag. Once they pass out of their barely 10 months course, they start calling themselves NLS product. On Linkedin, in job interviews everywhere they try to live this impostor life. Which is of course similar to what "some" NLS grads do after going to Harvard for LLM like OP. But I have still seen NLS or NALSAR grads who have done LLM in Harvard and Yale openly call themselves NLU grad, I am yet to see a BHU, DU, AMU, LU grad who has done LLM from NLS to acknowledge their grad school.

They will just introduce themselves as NLS alums, try to get in LLB whatsapp groups, try to leverage LLB alum networks and what not. In a way I think it is disadvantageous to actual NLU grads as these lallums want to take benefits of both LLB networks, that is their own grad school LLB network and their PG school's LLB network. I mean I strived hard, sacrificed and dropped a couple of years to join NLS and make use of its networking power and alum connections and here are these lallums who want to do it for free. That way I will say even MBL students should be allowed. It should either be all or none.

Excellent sarcasm. An Indian guy right here at Harvard told me of this website a while back when I was a 2L. He described it as a place which was really good to vent and rant on random stuff about, and where you could find high class shitpost content, if you were looking for that sort of thing (and he was right!).

To answer the question, I didn't know about this place called N.L.S. until now, and I'm quite intreagued to learn about it. But seriously, you guys sure as hell gotta develop a thicker skin, if you're from there. Hell, we used to kid even LLM's who'd been to law school at Oxford for Christ's sake, so how do you think we'd treat folks from a place most of us hadn't heard of in a country half of us couldn't find on a map?

Guys, you carry on like this and the attitude of even folks like me who'd kid LLM's just to troll, rather than to put 'em down, will be like that of that there guy the limeys call Sherlock Holmes.
