I guess we know the reasons why they may not have managed to settle down: demanding work hours, takes many years to establish yourself in litigation, perhaps guys get intimidated by lawyers, perhaps high expectations in men, perhaps toxic past relationships, perhaps lacking physical attributes that Indian men consider attractive etc.

But I am more interested in the options ahead. Adoption? Sperm donor and IVF? Forever childless? Dog mother? Cat mother? Still hoping to find a soulmate? Maybe devote spare time to politics and social service?

Curious because of the high numbers of women lawyers in this category I see, compared with women engineers or doctors or designers or MBAs, that’s all.

the team is extremely understaffed at all levels. A friend of mine works in this team and has told me it has gotten much much better in terms of culture in the past couple of years while the volume remains the same, due to understaffing. Trainees are being hired with an intention to retain.

It's kind of bleak. Foreign funding for PhD is getting very uncertain, Indian universities are not good enough or don't have support for PhD scholars (NLS being a prime example), hirings have almost stopped in public sector- most hirings now are backlog posts. Private sector universities are opening but they also prefer people with foreign degrees, and most of them are not that good as well. Papers get 1 year to get reviewed in good journals, while frauds get published very easily in random Scopus journals.

And most importantly, we have lost a connection with the students. It feels very transactional- one semester or trimester getting over feels like a merger getting over in a law firm. Not much personal connections with students, like we used to have during our student days. It's hard to remain motivated to teach.

No, that's a very wrong notion, particularly looking at Europe. There are hyper-specialized programs there for people who want to specialize, and they start working in Europe.

I've done an LLM from India, and I have been a TA for LLM students as well. While there are people who're serious, most Indian students do not take up an LLM to join academia.

I wouldn't comment on J School because I have no experience with people there. But NLS is also valuing foreign degrees, in the sense that people fresh out of LLMs with foreign degrees have also been hired on contract.

Literally no. It might pretend to be such, but it's nothing of the sort! It has a hugely problematic colonial legacy, which it has refused utterly to address. Be as critical of the SOAS as you like (I am from one of the other institutions mentioned as being better, and quite like hating on them myself), but saying that they are an "English version of JNU" is falling into their trap - that's what they'd like you to think.

Focus on publishing more, intern in a law firm/chamber (go for a law firm or chamber based on your interest and understanding, where you can showcase your skills) in the remaining two semesters and obviously there is no other way for academics, but to give it your all and push, you won't have a drastic improvement in acads at least but it'll be enough....it will help you go from place A to B.

Trilegal is a good place to be an Associate / SA.

After that it is very very bad place to be in.

You will need internal godfathers to grow.

So if you don't have one - learn and scoot.

People will come laterally with client books.

In the end, that is all that matters to everyone.

Hello everyone. I have graduated from T1 NLU and 2pqe working with a senior counsel. My main goal is it to set up my own chamber practice in the near future. I come from a lower mid. background and monetary wise I'm on the lower front as compared to my clg peers.

Presently, I'm planning to prepare for government exams, especially the Public Prosecutor exams of various states, as it will provide me a decent pay, and respectable job profile, but when I connect with my college mates, they think that I'm a fool prepping for Prosecutor Job being an alumni of a T1 and atleast look for Judiciary as a career option. ( But, I'm least I interested in joining judiciary as a. Career, as I feel I would be more than happy to argue and present cases rather than deciding them). :)

I'll tell you a little secret, son. Back in my days, everyone would say "jo kuch nahi karta wo vakalat karta hai." (Law is done by he who does nothing.). Except the top 1% of this profession, that are scattered across litigation, judiciary, corporate, academia etc, the rest 99% are average or even below average in knowledge. They just mug up and vomit what they know. They won't get into the depths of paper writing, research and analytical development. They're the "wannabe" tech bros, well atleast the average tech bro atleast has a certain prosperous wealth and standing in society. However majority of these people are just here cause they had no place to go.

Also, always remember, I say this to everyone who cleared or didn't clear clat. It's a one day objective exam that is decide by one rank. If it's your day, you could get a tier 1, if it's not, you'll not even get a rank. That's enough to change your standing in life. So whatever you get or don't, don't worry and work hard, these 5 years will change your life. Focus on yourself.

I’ve been offered a ppo in a tier 1 tax law firm in their IDT team. However, I’ve read on other threads on LI that tax is a trap and it is very difficult to switch to other teams since it is a niche practice. Im someone who enjoys dynamic work and I’ve found IDT to be quite mundane especially with the constant classification assignments. The litigation aspects are good, however, I dont enjoy it as much as I enjoy commercial disputes or corporate advisory. Should I join the firm for a year and then try switching teams. Will I be able to switch to a corp advisory team/disputes team in a tier 1 or even a tier 2 for that matter?

Just a general thought on this: when senior/equity partners exit how often do their 'parent' firms enforce non-compete and non-solicit provisions and payment to the Partner. When I was working as an A0 at a T1 firm, the Partner (who moved from AZB) told the team during a general discussion that AZB did not give her/him what was due.

Hello there to all the seniors today as the third merit list key mouth I was finally or noted mnlu Nagpur and I was quite excited about it because I heard it is doing great in placements in general I was very excited to be able to get in a nlu but then I saw some post on Reddit and here about the condition of the hostels given to the first year students and it has really scared me off since I am a girl I am also worried about my safety. I really want to be studying in a n l u so should I drop my dream dream is of this reason

LLMs are only for academia, and the world over should push this notion. There should be a time limit, like if you don't use your LLM in the next 3 years to teach, it should be declared invalid, or something like that. Most of these so called postgraduates, don't even care about research or teaching. They're just getting a degree, cause they don't want to work. In turn spoiling the chances for genuine people who want to get into academia. Look at J-school, all faculties with an LLM from abroad, no NET, no teaching experience, no research paper and they teach like shit. Absolutely rubbish.

Why is it a sin to graduate from a tier 3, work in a tier 2 and live a simple, non-materialistic life ? Why do we all have to run after tier 1 NLUs, tier 1 law firms and tier 1 money ? I understand the materialistic part. I want to know the difference of the craze. In the end, we all will turn to dust. Now, I am not advocating to be lazy and not work hard. That's totally wrong. But even if you work your 100% and still not get what you want, isn't it fine to just coast along till you get something better. Rather than burning yourself out ?

So, I've got an offer to join a chamber in a Tier-2 city, which is gonna pay me decently, but the senior has just 2 years of experience, but has a lot of connections and is also an empanelled lawyer of many pvt companies and has many government clients, moreover that senior seems to be very dedicated and will only be keeping one junior in his office, so I wanted to know if joining that chamber is a wise move or not? And I'm thinking about future prospects, whether working in such an inexperienced chamber would help me in making a switch to a senior advocate' s chamber at a later point of time or is it looked down upon?

assessment internships should ideally be longer and not shorter- how would anyone even assess you in a span of 3 weeks? since you're bo26, do consider other options since you'd be looking to get placed and not waste your time into something where you know you're not getting in. And if you do think of going ahead, maybe confirm with the HR if it's the same practice area and team, will give you a picture of what's going on

tbh, you will face a bit of discrimination initially, especially in your first sem. But then exams happen, you get new grades and a rank list, and people have newer things to throw shade upon each other so they forget about CLAT ranks. However, do expect passing remarks here and there throughout your 5 years. But you'll get used to it, and it won't matter much.

Caution: if you do end up taking NLUO, make sure to give in your absolute best right from the start. NLUO doen't have great placements, and not more than 5-10 people manage to get t-1 jobs. None of this is meant to demoralise you but just give you a picture of what you're stepping into. So if you're paying that money, make sure it's worth it. Good luck!

Same as you brother/sister. I'm at T1 college that is known for amazing placements and I have had a hard time getting internships at T-1 law firms. I have given up on day zero too, because well connected people also control our RCC and there is no guarantee that I will get a fair shot. Still, will keep persisting and would suggest you to pesevere too. It's a sad state of affairs and biggest mistake we made was to enter this profession thinking our hard work and smart work would be enough.

GNLU has surpassed every law school in India. Forget India, they call Harvard the GNLU of the West. GNLU has risen so much that ISRO has proposed to launch it into lower Earth orbit. The Parliament has to seek GNLU's assent before passing any new law. When Trump came to India, he met the VC of GNLU before Modi. GNLU is so great that even the dogs on campus are hired by T1 firms. GNLU is so legendary that whenever their football team goes to play elsewhere, SA allegations always follow

Unfortunately, it will matter a lot for your placement. With 300 in BALLB and another 120-180 in LLB, you will probably end up without a job if you have a CGPA of 3-3.5. That said, this is not the end of it all. You always have the option of looking for litigation chambers, T2-T3 firms. The pay is less, but you will learn a lot, and within 4-5 years, you will be able to catch up.

My advice would be to work on your CGPA as much as possible. If it's due to personal reasons, I hope it has been taken care of. Don't waste your time on moots, negos, committees, etc. They add zero value to your CV. Work your ass off during the trimester and intern during the breaks so that you have a good CV overall.

Why do law firm associates judge the lawyer who tries to set up independent legal practice. There are several small startups whoo need to raise funds for their operations. I think the market is huge as independent practitioners can work on the transactions at 1/10th the fees of law firms. Any opinions on this?

I stay far from the office and given the salary I can't afford to stay near one. So should I join a small firm which is 10-6/7 ( fixed) with 25-30k or tier 2/3 with 45k ( starting as ao for 20k)

Folks do fail in the first year, due to a variety of reasons, and I think as long as you do not feel all the acads are entirely foreign, and it is very hard to get a grip on the basics, you'll be fine. Grades these days are more about gaming the system and knowing where to pay attention in the subject. Do not shy away from asking for help from seniors, it will make your life a billion times easier. Try again and do not lose hope. All the best!

As far as job placments go you still have time to course correct get those grades up. Try interning, publishing in any area of law you're interested in. As long as you're able to show some sufficient engagement with the law, employer's will think you're good and will hire you. Was part of the process two years ago, when the scheme was newly brought in with new changes by DYC. Had filled in the preference list, didn't receive a call from any judge. Eventually got an email from the registry for the interview. That mostly happens in lots. It's a 3-5 min interview, depending on how much interest you are able to inspire from the panel.

See a year loss matters a lot, it's not as if no one sees it, when we applied for placements most law firms saw whether the 5 year course had been completed in 5 years or not.

Also, my guy you're in a batch of 300 students, you're screwed beyond repair

go to jail via local NGO, take some bail petitions of some poor inmates pro bono, talk to IO & his staff, file some discharge applications
you will learn a lot.. far more than carrying some files of some lawyer.. yes, you will have none to have your back at start but worth it

It matters and from what I have observed is that they will assess your critical thinking. So the questions they might ask will not always be “this is under which statute or section” but more likely to be “why under this statute/section”. (This is just and example hope you get the idea)
