I applied to previous intake of Case management intern of LCIA, as a disputes lawyer working in a T1 firm for almost 3 years.

I have a ug from an NLU and have written some decent papers. +T1 disputes firms experience.

They haven't responded, no confirmation to form submission even.

Is there any chance for a person with just a UG degree from India? Do you know anyone who has gotten it?

Lots of things to unpack here:

1. If the chats are real, they are from a few years ago. It means that the BJP government was spying on either her, or the influential person whose name has come up. This would mean a major, major scandal going up to the highest levels of government. If they were spying on her, was it at Adani’s behest? How did they access the chats? Pegasus?

It is a good area of practice as it is vast comprising land laws, mortgage (financing), property laws, title search and investigation, escrow structuring (financing aspects), dozens of permission required from various authorities, municipal corporation laws, development agreements, loan agreements, etc. So, if you gain significant experience and exposure then it will help you grow in the field. Christ University is not structurally capable of attracting academic talent. Many use it as a stepping stone for greener pastures. Strict biometrics, dress codes and moral policing means that serious scholars cannot be retained by Christ. For a LLM program to succeed, you do need good scholars. On present form, NLSIU has a much stronger group that is teaching the mandatory courses for the LL.M. students and offers a much broader range of elective courses. The institutional environment is also much better as it encourages regular work and original thinking.

Equity partners in family owned firms are more secure and will spend some time in their teams growth. In other firms, it’s big fishing shadowing the small one and making sure they don’t shine brighter than the big fish. This applies to azb Trilegal and all equity model firms. How many practices have more than one equity partner ? Think of their cap markets, aviation, finance or the vast disputes practice. Not more than one equity partner. These equity partners will deliberately flush out those who are about to be equity and still the managing partner will not utter a word.

They have the same tier-1 level internal politics. The junior level partners guarding the doors and ensuring no real talent walks into the firm (to ensure zero threats to their existing position) - look the place has few good senior partners, KC is generally a good human, work at this place for a while, and then figure out something better. But this whole “mirror mirror who’s the fairest/most tier1 of them all” business is silly.

I have a very relevant query seeing the legal market in India. So there are many law firms and chambers across the country, and these are mostly unregulated and not registered be it in form of partnership/LLP or Company. Now if people (fresher or even experienced people) are joining these firms, they don't receive a written contract/offer letter. Nor do they have salary slips of whatever is being paid. Mostly payments are done in cash or upi payments, except for some formal law firms organisations mostly operating out of likes of Delhi/Mumbai. How do then these associates who work at these firms, prove about the same, if tomorrow they are going to join a Company or similar formal employment. Usually salary slips, appointment letter, experience letter and relieving letters are required at big places. Is this not creating a blockage for 99% of legal professionals to climb the career ladder?

I interned with S&R Delhi. And everyone was very friendly. Kinnari ma'am was very encouraging. The senior associates like Vinay Sir and Pulatsya Sir were also very nice. Generally everyone seemed to have a good time. Most people left by 7 pm also. So seemed like work life balance was good. Indus I have not interned. But I hear it's a boy's club. I would go for S&R. In any case, they aren't the same league.

They don't look for experience, it's a wfh role and it pays good (US$1500 for a fresher ~ 1.35 L). Interned there a few months back. There is no work for interns. It's a firm to intern at your second year I feel. The work you end up getting is also basic. You don't really get to do any core work. It was genuinely the worst place I interned at.

Work life balance is terrible too for the associates. Really hated that place.

Despite a strong profile, the standard application channels for firms like NDA, JSA, TT&A and CAM seem to be dead ends right now for someone who is not applying through their college internship committee

1. Nishith Desai Associates (NDA): Their 'Internship Application Form' link redirects to a generic job posting, and the their website says send an email internship@nishithdesai.com with the application form (which is not available on their website).

3. JSA: The website states they are closed for internship applications and the email sends automated rejections, and they explicitly discourage emailing partners. Yet, I see people on LinkedIN (even from NON-NLUs) securing internships, what is the actual protocol for non-campus applicants?

depends on team to team, even if you don't come early...at most days you have to wake up as early as 6 in the morning and spend 2-3 hours working early morning at home if you don't like to pull late nights. That said, on an average in my team office hours is 10:30 am to 8 pm....but on maximum days work has to be taken home and weekends are also occupied. I so badly want to leave law firms.
