I had been preparing for judicial services and law officer exams but now with the 3 year practice requirement and limited vacancies for law officers, I have been trying to switch to a corporate law firm role. Haven't received any responses to cold mails, and since i am from the 2024 batch, i feel like i'm stuck and it won't get better. How realistic is it for someone from a judiciary-prep background to switch into a law firm at this stage?

Have the rules of grammar changed much since the publication of Wren & Martin? I agree that merely using a book like that is not going to improve one's vocabulary but it is still largely indispensable for having a solid understanding of the rules of English grammar. Intuition regarding grammar which is gained through exposure to English is good but it is no substitute for actually understanding the rules of grammar.

IVth Year student from NLS here, I'm sure students across batches can feel the frustration and helplessness at the way our Messiah's "Master Plan" for re-development is being implemented on Campus. What started as periodic banging and clanging has now amplified to a crass cacophony of incessant drilling, banging, and unloading that too right from morning classes scheduled for 9:00 AM. The administration has forced us to normalise these noises around us that seriously impact concentrating and understanding what is being taught in class. At times, the drilling gets so loud that the Professors need to pause and start teaching in installments. They do not spare suspending construction activities even during our mid/end term examinations which is the least we expect them to do. I'd have appended footage of the noise we experience had there been an option, but yeah. This has been going on for three continuous trimesters now (each new trimester heralding a substantial increment in NOISE POLLUTION levels) and I sincerely hope that some compromise can be worked out before driving all of us here mad!!!!!!!!

The Univ admin will always prefer opacity. Full disclosure of EC, AC etc minutes and agenda notes was a hard won victory by the SJA during Talukdar regime. And then for unstated reasons successive SJA brass decided to go all servile. It certainly helped personal and pecuniary agendas across the board. Goodness knows what the ever smiling and agreeable leader will do this time.

I'm in a T1 Tax Law firm for the past 3 years. I've spent an extensive amount of time right from law school till now to specialise in IDT. I'm now considering to switch to general litigation because of the lack of mobility within tax practising law firms. I understand that general litigation would give me a diverse workload along with the unending opportunities between firms.

I do love tax, I enjoy it thoroughly, I'm just considering switching because of the lack of mobility amongst tax law firms. Seeking advice if switching to general lit is a good decision or sticking it in tax litigation because of the opportunities forming owing to GSTAT.

I didn't really have this problem with English, because I grew up in an environment where it was regularly used. However, I feel that this advice would work, because this is exactly what I employed for French, which is a language I need for my specific professional purposes, and I went from someone who couldn't speak a word of French back in 2019, to someone who can comfortably converse with anyone in French on most topics today.

There are scholars in NLS who work on urban studies, public policy, gender, caste and religion. All of them are exemplary scholars. Under a different ruling dispensation, they should have been teaching in JNU or other similarly placed universities. Anyway, the point being that NLS is an excellent University at the current moment to pursue PhD in Social Sciences, especially Political Science. Also, look into different IITs, especially Bombay, Delhi, and Madras.

Whereas if someone gets a job because of his/her connections, it's ok. I mean, technically both are unfair advantages, but the one who's good looking will almost always get more hate than the one who's resourceful and well connected. Why do we like sh*tting on good looking people so much? It's not like all good-looking people sleep with their bosses to get their job. They may just be favoured over other plain-looking candidates.

I am looking to switch to a Tier I firm in Mumbai in Disputes. Been working at a Mid-Tier Mumbai law firm since the last 4 years, where I did General Lit and Real Estate primarily. I want to get into general Civil and Commercial Litigation.

Honestly, unless you used ChatGPT to write this, your written English is fine. So I assume you're mostly concerned about your spoken English.

The only way to get good at it is first to be exposed to a LOT of it - so (if you don't already) watch lots of stuff in English - news, movies, podcasts, whatever. Hundreds and thousands of hours (yes it will take time).

In conjunction with that, just speak a lot - speak as much as you can, to other people but also just to yourself when alone etc. The more you do this, the better you will become and the more you will start thinking in English instead of thinking in Hindi and translating to English (which is the biggest barrier for most people when moving towards fluency - you can't sound fluent if you are thinking in Hindi and translating into English).

Look into the "Comprehensible Input" theory of language learning - there's lots on YouTube. But basically all you need is lots of exposure (until you can comfortably understand English movies without strain or missing anything - if you're already at that level you can go to speaking) and then speak as much as possible. Don't waste your time studying grammar and things like that - it's like learning to play tennis by watching tennis videos instead of actually swinging a racket. Just learn like babies learn their mother tongue.

But the Univ is inviting applicants to pursue PG courses in Criminology, Forensic Sciences and Data Science. And all NKC acolytes in faculty ranks are getting confirmed or promoted.

Just go back in history and check how the NUJS Amendment Bill wa legislated. EC had no prior info or discussion . Univ bypassed completely.

The question was, since as the author aggressively pointed out, they only write without AI when they get paid for it, whether they write to their mother or family by hand or whether they use AI to do so. No offence to mothers was intended, it is obviously a rhetorical question.

T1 SAs, PAs and Partners live in a completely detached reality. Lawyers by default have a tad bit of ego with respect to how they carry themselves but it's so hilarious seeing some unfortunate T1 folk who harbour this misconception that the current economic drive of India lies on their shoulders. Similarly, junior magistrates/judges who are directly appointed via exams (who were often around 24-25 years of age) seem to possess an ego bigger than even the most arrogant of HC judges, without understanding that many trial-court advocates possess decades worth of legal knowledge and skills in advocacy!

Buy a copy of Wren & Martin. Repeatedly drilling the exercises in that book did wonders for my English proficiency as a child. I would go so far as to say that you will notice a substantial improvement in your English within a month if you diligently use that book for that period of time.

It is very A0-A3 heavy and very disorganised. Partners take on way more deals than what the team can manage and most of it falls on the juniors. Add to that, the juniors attrition rate is high and everyone is either leaving or falling sick due to burnout. I have heard that a lot of people have put in their resignations, so openings are there but not a sustainable team in the long run…

Nope. No such thing. Even the Asansol campus has been called off now after OVN weaved his magic in the first EC. He has made it clear that he would focus on consolidation during his tenure and not expansion. Some of the useless courses started by NKC are on their way out already.

A crown court judge was accused of using an anonymous social media account to conduct a campaign of online harassment against a female barrister and feminist campaigner.

Judge Daniel Sawyer, who sits in Portsmouth, stood accused of breaching judicial guidance on social media and abusing his position by targeting Charlotte Proudman on X, according to a complaint submitted to the judicial watchdog.

The account presented itself as an anonymous criminal barrister commenting on legal issues and court practice. The complaint alleges that Sawyer used it to criticise Proudman’s views on rape prosecutions while concealing his identity.

The submission claimed that Sawyer used a the account, “Yet Another Tweeting Barrister”, to repeatedly post, like and reply to hostile commentary about Proudman, including criticism of her views on rape law and the criminal justice system.

The Times understands that posts relating to horseback archery, a niche sport in which Sawyer is heavily involved, formed part of the material used to identify him as the operator of the account.

The complaint alleged his online activity included tweets accusing Proudman of knowing “nothing” about the criminal courts and suggesting her commentary could discourage victims from reporting crimes. Screenshots attached to the complaint showed posts urging readers not to let Proudman’s comments “put you off reporting crime” and criticising her understanding of how sexual offence cases are handled in court.

The complaint also highlighted an adapted lyric referencing the phrase “99 problems but a bitch ain’t one”, which the document said some followers interpreted as referring to Proudman. In a subsequent tweet, the account said it did not know the phrase “99 problems” was a reference to the word “bitch”.

It further alleged that Sawyer encouraged other users to report Proudman to the Bar Standards Board (BSB) and contact her chambers, which the complaint said prompted abusive replies from members of the public, including misogynistic insults.

The tweets were mostly written in 2022, when Sawyer was a recorder or part-time judge. He was appointed a circuit judge for the western circuit in 2024. The submission alleged that such conduct risked undermining public confidence in the judiciary and breached guidance warning judges not to assume social media activity was private or free from scrutiny.

Judicial guidance circulated to members of the bench warned that judges should “pause before you post” and remember that liking or interacting with posts can be perceived as endorsement of their content.

The complaint also criticised Sawyer for filing a complaint to the BSB about Proudman’s social media posts, which triggered a lengthy investigation that was ultimately dropped. According to documents referenced in the complaint, Proudman was investigated for several months before the allegations were discontinued without explanation or apology.

The submission asked the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) to investigate whether Sawyer’s conduct amounted to misconduct under judicial conduct rules, alleging that his actions constituted “public harassment, gender-based bullying and misuse of his judicial office”.

On Friday the JCIO told the complainant it would not proceed further with the complaint because it had been made outside the three-month time limit set out in the rules, adding that even if it had been admitted it would not have warranted disciplinary action.

Proudman said she believed the posts formed part of a sustained campaign against her. She told The Times: “Daniel Sawyer targeted me with a public campaign of harassment and misogyny. This behaviour is utterly incompatible with the standards expected of those entrusted with judicial power.”

A spokesperson for the JCIO said: “The [office] has responsibility for the investigation of conduct and discipline of judges. [We] cannot comment on individual complaints, investigations or legal proceedings.”

Sawyer was approached for comment.

You can study anywhere. If you work hard and stay focused on your studies and on building skills for placements, you can succeed whether it is NLUO Odisha or DU. Your effort matters the most and with dedication you can create good opportunities for yourself from anywhere.

Also the 3-year LLB program has only recently started and the first batch will pass out in 2026 so right now we can only make assumptions. The real picture will become clear once the first batch pass

And yes DU is definitely good no doubt about that . But an NLU is also an NLU. I know the 3-year LLB there has just started and it is new, but because of the NLU brand and the high fees they charge, I believe they will try to provide good placement opportunities as well. In the end, if you work hard and build your skills, you can benefit from those opportunities.

I completed my callback in Disputes at SAM Delhi back in February. During the internship, I had received positive feedback from the team members I worked with. At one point, I was even told that they might consider recommending me for a General PPO if there was an issue with vacancies in the team. However, after the internship ended, I mailed the HR and received a brief reply stating that I have not been recommended by my team for a PPO. When I followed up, I was told that the decision was based on my feedback not being positive.

I’m honestly not sure how to process this, especially since the feedback during the internship was positive. Is this something that happens often? Is there still any hope with the firm? And how should I proceed from here? Would really appreciate any insights.

I have not gone through this myself, but I have seen friends who have successfully done it. The biggest part is confidence which comes from practice , so try and avoid speaking in other languages outside of home. Even among friends try practicing your English by speaking with them. Obviously in office as well. Read English newspaper everyday to pick up new words. Over a period of time both your English and confidence will improve. all the best!

What is the need for introducing a 3-year LLB course at NLUs? NLSIU was established following the 14th Law Commission Report, which suggested that the 3-year LLB was no longer sufficient. That is why the 5-year integrated course was started. However, now those same NLUs are reintroducing the 3-year course. They lack proper examination standards, and the quality of students being admitted is very poor. So far, NLSIU, DSNLU, NLUO, and CNLU have already started this.

Induction cookers AND their pots and pans are sold out, not everything can be made in a microwave or airfryer, people want to eat proper food and not snacks throughout the day, etc

Stop imposing your pathetic hostel Life style on people who have a family to feed.

Panic is not setting in some countries since they do not have a huge population like ours where shortage is imminent. And for those that are populated as much as ours, there definitely is panic, you just don't read the news well.

Also, instead of us sacrificing, why not put the blame on the real people for once. Stop supporting PDO elites and stand with the common person for once.
