There are many boutique firms that pay as much or even higher than some of the Tier-1 firms, I am aware of Resolut, Quillon, Lexygen, Pioneer amongst others. Which ones of them are better based on different considerations like career growth trajectory, WLB, Salary increments etc.?

I’m a 4th year student, heading into two T1 internships in the next 6 months (both corporate). However, I’ve not been able to figure out what I really want to do after graduation. My internship experience has majorly been in the corporate litigation sphere (SEBI, NCLT, Arbitration matters, etc). I’ve done one general corporate internship (PE) but it wasn’t as interesting/dynamic as the Corp litigation ones.

I want to try out IPR/Media laws but haven’t been able to secure any internships in that field. The idea of a counsel practise also interests me, but I don’t have any personal contacts and the counsels I’ve applied to at BHC have been reluctant to take me on as an intern.

How do I decide if a particular area is right for me? What do I do if I get an offer from these two firms I’m interning at in the future? What if I get stuck in general corporate but get bored as I did in the previous internship? Will the money they offer be a good enough reason to keep me going? There’s so much uncertainty and anxiety around this, any help would be appreciated!

While reading, when you see any cited judgement, read that one too until you fully understand what it deals with. Repeat everyday and you won't even realise how quickly you'll start developing an in depth understanding of the subject.

You can take assistance of articles but they can't substitute for judgements.

Try finding a chamber that has corporate litigation or general corporate practice.That you would be able to shift more easily to core law firm profile later on.sticking with civil litigation would only narrow your career path since you'll be an advocate only and your skill set wouldn't align

You made a good decision by choosing to work as an in-house counsel over being at the mercy of law firms where the work-life balance is in shambles. Since I don't know your exact work experience in "number of years," let me take a guess (approx 12-15 years), Maybe you can try to do an MBA from an IIM or a decent institute, and that degree coupled with your extensive experience in various companies as an in-house counsel will get you the perfect job. Many companies do hire Chief Legal Officers/GCs (that MBA degree might help). So that's my take. I hope this helps...

I started my career as an in-house counsel, and worked with a few great companies! At this juncture, I just feel stuck as there are hardly any in-house roles open for a mid-senior level experience and the law firms are not okay with giving a chance to someone with a majority in-house experience. I don't think looks matter as much as you think. I have personally seen a very good-looking guy in my office, who transferred from Mumbai to Noida, who was the center of attraction for most girls for a few days, end up being totally alone a few days later. Probably good personality and nature matter more than good looks.

Hi, I would say switching practice at this point is simply a waste of time. Either continue what you are doing, or leave law altogether for greener pastures. The Law field is simply too saturated and biased for any new comers. Thousands, lakhs of students graduate from law colleges every year, with just not enough resources to absorb them in the first 2-3 yeas of their practice at least, and with coming time, given out antiquated and stifling the profession is , things are going to get works for people who are not clear about their career choices.

A T1 law firm partner advised associates to purchase land in Noida as majority of firms have offices there and described Noida as "Mini Japan". He said that SC will be shifted to Noida and Mumbai will loose Film City status to Noida and with Bhojpuri culture in the city the GDP of the city will be more than that of entire Pakistan. The jhevar airport will lead to shutdown of IGI with more plans to make it Gift city and casino hub of India.

I joined a T1 law firm where the partner categorically told me buy clothes of brands like Ralph, Lacoste, Vanheusen and Raymonds at the least. On my first day I was not only gawked from top to bottom but was also advised to discard my "Liberty" shoes and purchase Red tape or some fancy Italian leather brand.

I carried a copper water bottle to office due to health reasons to which my SA said that we are not living in Indus Valley civilization and that "Milton is our friend". I thought he was referring to John Milton but realised it later.

I come from a humble background so these things came as a shocker and eyeopener to me. Imo law firms should disclose these petty things during their pre placement talks at Universities a/w list of brands that entitles me to a member of this elite clan.

I made salaried partner this year. A client was congratulating me on call, both me and my senior equity partner (him for promoting me).
