A JD, in case you weren't aware, is a 'terminal degree' (the highest degree available in law in that system). The SJD (the PhD in law which many U.S. law schools have) is a doctoral degree for foreign scholars, not designed for people in the U.S. And for your information, many people work for a PhD alongside a JD, or before a JD.

But, apart from that I have done legitimate courses on my specialization, won a couple of national moot courts, published is not so known places, and a couple of T2 internships. I am not happy with the CV but I still have a couple of years to work on it.

Basically they overload you with tons of assignments and projects, insterprese it with in class assignment where you are supposed to basically copy stuff from internet to create a research book and answer their stupid questions using that lol. All this in a matter of 3 months and you barely focussing on learning the core law. Pure burnout. Nothing else.

I have interned for 3 months at VPLO. The exposure I've got into Corporate and Commercial Law is really good. You'd get to draft (yes, literally draft) agreements and conduct genuine legal research. Additionally, you'd also be asked to author various case updates and papers. You don't get to interact with the seniors, all the work is communicated through WhatsApp. That's the only downside here. Otherwise, it's good.

I started in a boutique firm, switched in-house (MNC) within ~2years. Left in-house for a Tier I in 4 years. Left Tier I within a year for another in-house (PSU). Left the in-house in 2years for the same Tier I. Completed 10years in profession, with a total of 4 job switches. Before joining the Tier I, I got an interview with a European in-house role based in Germany. I was able to clear the first 3 rounds but was dropped thereafter because of the no of switches i made. Every discussion started with my career choices so far and a question as to how far/long do i see myself in their company. While i made sure I was able to communicate my reasons for the switches, it seemed a bit challenging for the interviewer to accept those as suitable replies. I do understand their concern and was able to communicate that my stay in their company depends on a lot of factors which broadly included a good work profile and a reasonably balanced personal life. Trust me guys, law firms are much practical in hiring a candidate whereas the Indian in-houses still believe in hiring people who were "loyal" to their previous employers!

The package offered was 16.2 LPA.

This approach of recruiting freshers based on their internship performance makes a lot more sense than hiring based on college tags and grades. KCO has hired significantly via PPOs as well.

Yes, I have interned here in the past. The working environment is very flexible, welcoming, and conducive. The team members directly allot you client work, which gives you first hand exposure. The tasks range from conducting research to drafting assignments - main practice areas are corporate, data privacy, employment, and others allied areas. You get to directly interact with al the team members. It is definitely a 10/10 recommendation to virtually intern here.

Most partners in this field are difficult people to work with, which leads to slow growth, alot of dissatisfaction. Lets say you are starting your career today, in GC, lit, you can expect you reach partner/counsel level (with consistent hard work of course) in about approximately 11-12years. But if you pick competition, you will be forced to make a compromise when you hit the 9-10 year mark in your career. The opportunities are limited and the toxicity is only multiplying.

No. I barely had anything going for me. I graduated with a BA in political science, got caught up in the vicious competitive exams cycle. Age limit. Realise I will soon be 30 with no job, no work experience. I had only two options MBA or LLB. I was so broken down that I didn't think I'd crack CAT. So went for LLB. Didn't intern under anyone till my last year, as I had a fear of rejection. Somehow got the courage to join a chamber. Worked my ass off for one month, the advocate saw that, appreciated it and asked if I want to work in his chambers. I didn't have anything going for me. So I joined. The pay was barely 10K, even that depended on how work was in chambers. Still managed somehow. Finally after 3 years, got my experience certificate and all the knowledge I had and applied in a tier 2. Worked there for 2 years. So 3+2 years of experience and entered a tier 1. Finally got through. In the end ageism definitely exists especially in India which is bound by the social construct of time. However, it's just one or two questions about you age. Be honest with them and they'll move on to other questions. In the end experience matters. My colleagues were fresh out of college and to be honest were very immature and unwise to handle life and profession together..more so that majority of them had never practiced in a court. So I had that advantage. The benefit of today is that people are looking for skills and not degrees. If you can upskill and get experience. You're good to go. Also, I would always tell myself this...don't see the 30 years you've wasted, work today for the 30 that still await ! All the best !

To learn drafting you need to repeatedly draft and have a senior who knows his shit correct your draftings.

Its repeated practice that improves your drafting thinking.

You can either find such a senior person willing to teach you

Also an edtech company in India has a program where you get to draft a lot and have someone check your drafts and tell you how to improve. I will not name the company but do your own research.
