If the person is good, then yeah. Everyone wants good A0s in the team to take the dirty work off their shoulders. Also, if it’s a team of 5-15 people then word about quality of work travels fast. If A0-3s like the work, they’ll recommend you to SA and PAs who can then give you their work. If you fuck up an A0-3s work then SA/PAs will not give you work so take all work (even if insignificant) seriously. In essence, it’s like climbing a ladder.

- Do they get a raise after completion?

Hi, so I recently finished my 2nd year of the 5-year course, and I got a chance to intern at a T1 firm in Mumbai for the month of September. I got in through connections since my family friend knew a Partner there. I am quite nervous because I am merely in my 5th semester now and haven't studied Company Law or allied subjects, which is necessary, I believe. (PS: I tried various T2/3 law firms but none cared to mail back any sort of acceptance or rejection, so this was my last resort)

I am unsure if I will get the opportunity to learn and work.

I am also scared of the fact that if I mess up or underperform my prospects for future internships there or any other branch will be closed forever.

If having an early T1 firm internship even counts as valuable in a CV.

Buddy, there's something called promotion. The reason why corp law is said to be high paying is not because of just fresher's salary. With time, your expenses will not increase (at least in the initial few years) as sharply as your salary.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer appears to have achieved what was commonly thought to be the impossible: the law firm has become a serious contender in New York despite hailing from the City of London.
The “magic circle” firm has broken into the top 10 of North American firms by value of M&A deals, officially competing head-to-head with US rivals in one of the most lucrative corners of the legal market.
The latest coup emerged just over the weekend: Freshfields is reportedly advising Google on its potential $23bn acquisition of cyber security start-up Wiz. US rivals surely clamoured to advise on the deal.
This comes after Freshfields has already nabbed work on other megadeals that raised eyebrows, such as Johnson & Johnson’s $13bn takeover of Shockwave Medical.
The secret to its success? The law firm hasn’t just poached one-off superstars. Instead, it’s hired almost 50 top partners over the past five years — aka entire teams — from US competitors like Skadden, Davis Polk and Cravath.
Ethan Klingsberg, who was a longtime rainmaker at Cleary Gottlieb, is one great example.
The firm poached six other partners from Cleary alongside Klingsberg (who is very likely the one to thank for the latest Google assignment) so that the team could offer a whole menu of legal advice — not just on deals.
Of course, hiring some of the US’s top talent has been expensive. Industry insiders speculated that Klingsberg secured guaranteed pay of more than $10mn a year.

Salary is something which has always concerned me. People Glorify earning 1 lac per month but it's really not a big deal. It doesn't make sense.

Earning 1 lac in mumbai equals to making 45k in T-2 city. The percentage of expenditure towards rent and transport will be the same between these individuals.

Law firms have turned blind eye towards inflation. T-1 pay more but it isn't any good. Things only get better when you become SA. Don't expect anything before. Like Sharan says 35 lpa is bare minimum to live in Mumbai.

Entry of foreign law firms can only save us now. Firms like hsf or a&o needs to enter and pay at least 22 lpa.

I have found female partners amazing and have always preferred working with them. The important thing to understand is that it really hasn't been easy for them. We have to support them in return. Some women react badly to all the abuse and disrespect they had to deal with on their journey but many really get how things are for you. I have generally noticed, they are extremes.

Its either that one female partner who is your mom's age or you are her kid's age so they act like a mentor/ mom sometimes. Some of them even see a similarity with their younger self and end up mentoring a lot.

Then you have the other kind, they see everyone as a threat and act super toxic, project personal insecurities and failures on other women including motherhood issues, marriage, looks, dressing etc.

You must be a real novice to write this. ICUL as a firm doesnt represent LPs and solely acts as GP Counsel. This is called as good governance and a non conflicted practice. They dont do tax so as to not compete with Big4. These are open secrets behind their mammoth GP led structuring and negotiation practice. I think you're spending a lil extra on rent+ furnishings. You could stay at a pg for a while? If you do not have the money backup why spend so much? You'll get a pg for around 20k or try comparison on the location. Look for something near the new metro stations or something like that. There are ways to compromise for a while atleast until you're done paying your education loan. You're right, there is barely anything left...but see we are all trying to make our ends meet somehow...good luck mate, you'll do well.

Avoid taking Delhi teams against Mumbai for most firms. You might spend a little more but you will learn and experience law a lot better in Mumbai. It grooms you. Relocate to your preferred city but best to start off 3-4 years at this hub. Not to mention, you're still at PPO stage they might go ahead and rescind it against you. Better to not finger too much.

Parents in my case are self dependent. Leaves me with ballpark of 70k in expenses. Not going for health insurance in the starting few years. Didn't opt for gym and do home workouts with decent running. Your budgeting is flawed otherwise too. Don't live in Lower Parel? Leave near grant road Mumbai or any cheaper areas. You'll save and can save much more.

Basically anybody with reasonable to above average expenses can save 5-7/8 lakhs in this year's salary. With the revised salary bands can even save 7-10 lakhs as A0. Stay a little conservative for the first few others. But formals from Pentaloons or Westside, don't buy the latest iPhone and invest wisely. It's not as bad as you're thinking of portraying. Also try consulting your seniors who you are closer to. Goodluck and pay off that debt asap. Never good baggage.

Hi, I'm an incoming A0 at the Mumbai Office of a "T1" law firm — a position I worked very hard to get, coming from a lower middle class family based in a T3 city. While I was initially hoping to finally put my hair down and indulge myself just a little thanks to a 'well-paying' job, I've just recently gotten down to budgeting and it seems that I'll be nearly broke for the most of it. Here's my list of approx expenses and how they fit into my salary: [please, for the love of God, someone tell me that I'm missing something]

~45k seems like a conservative figure for basic expenses for all T1 people in Lower Parel ([rent on a room within 3-4km from office + rent on furnishings=33-38k] + cook[4-5k] + groceries[3-4k] + maid[~2k] + auto/cab fares[3-8k])

~15k will go into term + health insurance premiums (also including health insurance for my sr citizen parents)

~10k will go into additional expenses (membership at a gym not too far away + finally buying better formals; for now I'll be joining with old formals bought from DMart & street shops)

~8k for the education loan

~12k I'll have to send home

Which leaves less than 20k overall. Now, within that I'd have to save at least 8-10k and invest another 5k, which, in the best case scenario, leaves drumroll less than 5k for any occasional going out or vices or any form of indulgent gifts to myself.

[I do understand that I'm still v lucky to have a 'prestigious' job in this market — but the fact that these positions are deemed so coveted by so many CLAT aspirants and law students across the country is just...so mind-blowing to me because given the inflation and real estate disaster that is South Bombay, I really don't see the point of an actual middle class person putting in so much hard work only to barely keep up the finances!]

Bhai senior associates ka recommendation holds weight. SA and PA and above all imp. Associates if it’s an A3 maybe some imp but others need to be happy also. One person recommending would not help. For others reading too - try to work with 3-4 seniors and be smart on how you get work from them and avoid work from A0/A1

The manner in which Tier 1 ppl are applying and joining ICUL Funds, its exactly going the other way round that Tier 1 is stepping stone to ICUL Funds. Check what happened to almost the entire mid senior funds team of Trilegal, which is consistently moving to ICUL. Any example anybody has whereby opposite has happened? No, none, You get best quality work, highest pay, better culture and that explains only incoming crowd at ICUL Funds and nothing outgoing, isnt it. Pretty straightforward.
