Messi? Great guy, but Maradona transcended football. Never will there be another like him. The Church of Maradona is a real thing.
Not even getting to Pele and Puskas, both of whom have claims to be better regarded than Messi. Puskas, with the GOAT Hungary team, lost one game between 1950 - 56. Sadly, that game was the 1954 WC final.
If it hadn't been for that one game, Puskas would have been in the same sentence as Pele, Maradona and Messi.
If Netherlands would have won one more game in 1974 (the WC Final), Cryuff would have been in the same sentence as Pele, Maradona and Messi.
If Kolo Muani had scored with only Martinez to beat in 2022, that sentence would have ended at Pele and Maradona.
Lots of room to dispute who is the GOAT here :)
