How important it is for callback/ppo? What it is really about? Like do we have to make a novel point or simple analysis is enough? Does the presentation need to be something extraordinary out of the box? Also, what if I don't have great speaking skills? Do I stand a chance? What level of speaking skills is required? Like do I need to be a great orator or something? Or is it simple english they expect with some stutters here and there?

So I gave my everything and worked my ass off for this exam and messed up on D day. Mostly because of that sitting arrangement set (I couldn't get much time for QT because of tensing over that set). It was a horrible mess all my 2 year prep just came to an end and despite consistently topping my coaching and even being in the so called elite batch of toppers, I still failed. December to June was a really depressing time period. I got 22** rank and wasn't getting a good college but I had filled NRI Sponsored for the worst case scenario which actually happened and filled NLUO nri forms because I'm not rich and that's the cheapest nri college I can afford (price point is similar to private colleges like SLS, nirma, nmims). I didn't want to join because again I felt like a loser for getting in a college through NRI, I didn't deserve to study there (thanks to my parents for reinforcing this mentality). But recently I have started to think a bit rationally I am thinking of joining NLUO. But I am a bit scared about how NRI students are treated. Because I don't even belong to a rich elite class so that incase I get outcasted by general students, I can be friends with the NRI quota students 😭 I am sure I can repay the hefty loan within 3-5 years but I am a really concerned as to will this quota affect my college life. I am sorry for dumping all this, this platform is anonymous so I felt like taking it all out here

I’m an incredibly awkward person (currently an A2 / 3) and feel way out of my depth during client meetings. While my partner generally leads to discussions or negotiations and I’m always quick to resolve any queries that come up, I don’t know how to engage in general discussions.

I feel very awkward while giving clients business cards, or even introduce myself, or make small talk. How do I overcome this? I can’t practice on my own so how to go about it?

Networking is not merely restrains to social relationships. Be a better holistic individual and it goes a long way. General knowledge skills would be one such aspect. Be as aware you can be about things that you believe are outside the scope of law, that itself helps in being a better law professional. Not very long since my graduation either, but I do believe it has helped me in ways I myself don't completely understand. Hope this helps.

its a great place really - connect with seniors that can be of help to you, dont be pressured into drugs (try if you want to but only if you want to, not out of peer pressure - seniors dont force you into it anyway, they only offer) you can go places if you make good use of the place that this is - dont let the lethargy of some get to you

nobody can stop you from texting anyone. shoot your shot but don't spam any partner. if they dont reply after one message, dont send a follow up. preferably if you've written something share that and ask them about their opinion on that legal matter and then proceed to ask for an internship directly. this approach might help them.

Hiring is happening in IBC teams at T1/T2 firms. As I'm about to start my 4th year and having previously interned with IBC teams, I want to know if it's advisable to pursue IBC further and gain more experience. Or do these firms generally prefer lateral hiring for associate positions?

It is ranked 101-150 in QS Law. You have Oxbridge, LSE, KCL, UCL, Edinburgh, QM, Durham, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol and Nottingham ranked in the top 100 above it. Even within the UK, SOAS is not highly respected. You don’t really have any top-tier professor of commercial law teaching here.

Yet, we see a lot of high regard for SOAS in the elite NLU community, almost as if it comes just after Oxbridge in prestige and reputation. Why is it so? Is it because SOAS has a heavily left-liberal culture and it is the left-liberal ecosystem that sets the trend in India? I can’t think of any other reason!

Don't mind my words. But this has become a trend. Everyone wants an easy way out, even before their career has started. Please understand that every career requires rigorous hard work and training in its initial phase. If you are truly serious about government services, consider freelancing alongside your preparation. Alternatively, you can go for litigation and negotiate work hours and conditions with your senior (many are decent enough to acknowledge your long-term career goals).

Let’s call out the elephant in the room: SILF.

Yes, the Society of Indian Law Firms. A self-appointed cartel of status-quoists, whose primary mandate, it seems, is to protect their own turf while pretending to represent the Indian legal ecosystem. Let’s not mince words—this is a club of law firm proprietors writing the rulebook for foreign law firms, without so much as a nod to the larger legal fraternity. That’s not stakeholder consultation; that’s old-school gatekeeping.

And here’s the inconvenient truth: these firms don’t even employ 15% of India’s legal talent. Meanwhile, we have a surging supply of lawyers—many bright, many trainable—who are left disillusioned, disenfranchised, and disheartened by a market that simply doesn’t create enough meaningful opportunities.

We now have an NLU (or equivalent) in every state—some excellent, others middling, but almost all expensive and rigorous. If we’re going to subject young Indians to that grind, then the least the government can do is open the doors. Let foreign law firms come in. Let them practise Indian law. Let them litigate. Let the market breathe.

And if that ruffles feathers? Then let’s go the whole hog—shut down the excess NLUs. Tell young people the truth: we’ve created more lawyers than we know what to do with. And then, let’s do the responsible thing—support those who can’t find their footing in the profession, and help them transition into other careers with dignity and direction.

Because what we have now is a closed loop of privilege masquerading as policy. And the longer we pretend otherwise, the more talent we waste.

Post about this on LinkedIn instead. Later in life, of course, when you have a bit of career stability and job security. No moderation, no redacting. If true, the firm cannot defend themselves. If you are bullshitting, then you'll at least be held accountable. This half-way kind of thing on LI is pointless because of the redacting system used here.

Hi LI Users. I am working as a junior to a litigating lawyer for the past 2 years. I want to seek opinion of Law firm disputes associates and government employees who cleared government exams and working on disputes resolution as in Public Prosecutors for States and Counsels working in PSUs.

Very disappointing response. What if the topic you want to do is not of interest to anybody else? Why would people waste their time collaborating with someone to work on a topic on which they are not interested? Or what if the topic is something they don't know much about because it is outside their area of specialisation?

The specifics is what people actually need to meaningfully respond. This was a very poorly thought-out advertisement, in other words, the next worst thing to a scam.

Finally, rudeness (as demonstrated in your response) does not help your case in the least. Ideally, your response should have been marked trollish for playing the man, not the ball, but I have lost any hope of consistency in moderation decisions here. At the very least, I hope people will make sensible judgments based on the lack/vagueness of information and the unnecessary hostility and aggressiveness as a response to that being pointed out.

I'll just say this - many students when they become teachers forget that they were once students. They have unreliatic expectations are not accomodative towards students, don't be that.

Keep updating yourself. A teacher in my UG program had slides for contracts that he had been using for several years. He scolded a friend when she made notes of all the slides and it became one of the unofficial course material. In contrast, my PhD supervisor keeps updating himself, experimenting with different class participation exercises, completely revamping his slides, constant updation of course material to remain relevant.

Why does that matter to anyone other than those who actually have a direct economic incentive in the profits (read equity partners)? Otherwise, if you want to, you could research the economics of law firms in India and compare them to the developed world.

Since it seems (from your post and the comments here) like it will portray Indian law firms as smaller than their western counterparts in terms of money, your research could be decried as anti-national and propaganda nonsense and you will be ostracized.

It's a risk you are willing to take (talking about government job pfep here) and you can't just mitigate that risk and imagine you'll have a perfect career like the others who are putting in work and hours. plus call me old school but anybody who is joining govt job for "wlb" is not really cut for this profession.

Recently graduated from T-3 NLU with a basic Disputes CV. I dont like corporate law firm roles so preparing for Gov. jobs( for WLB) which will take around 1-2 yrs. Now I am left wondering what if I couldn't clear my exam and my CV goes blank for all those lost years. So I need advice on which below options to choose keeping in mind I want a good work life balance-

1. I should join any law firm to gain relevant PQE and then switch over to In House roles.

2. I should try getting In House role directly.

3. I should only prep for Gov. exams.

4. I should work in my T-3 city district court to gain PQE.

Please help me this is really eating me up and depressing me..

One key initiative Gorthi highlights is a programme that allows qualified associates who go abroad for their masters degrees, to return without a break in seniority. “Many of the young lawyers returned to the firm,” he notes.

In addition to increased remuneration and transparent compensation rules, Trilegal introduced business tracking mechanisms “to identify and ease the burden of overworked associates”, says Gorthi. The law firm also offers wellness initiatives, such as mental health counselling, to support their team.

Having adopted these measures, Trilegal’s attrition rate has fallen to under 20%, which is comparable to the global average of 18% but low compared to most Indian law firms. “A significant portion of early-career attrition is due to individuals realising law isn’t for them, or wanting to pursue in-house or litigation roles,” Gorthi adds.
