I would strongly recommend not joining T&S Law. ▮▮▮ They typically offer a four-month “assessment internship” where they claim to evaluate your performance, after which they may convert you to a Junior Associate with a salary of ₹30,000 per month. However, even after completing the four-month assessment period, many candidates are not converted. Even when someone is converted, the firm often does not issue a proper offer letter.

Another major issue is that the firm is heavily influenced by the parents of the partners, who interfere in the functioning of the firm. ▮▮▮

I am gonna give you a different perspective (NLUD alumni from a lower middle class background). May or may not apply to your situation.

I would have opted for a drop and then given it my all next year because the cost of slsp or jgls is just too high for a law degree from a college that is not counted as "tier 1".

For the record, I understand you can do great even as. jgls and/or sls grad, and people have in fact done great. Just that odds are relatively stacked against you.

You should be able to get into a good private college even next year (including the two above).

Hey. I was just wondering, what is the estimated pqe of these associates he hired? I am a fresher, so I was wondering if there's a certain pqe that they prefer. If you feel you can't disclose that, please let me know what you think should be the least pqe to join trilegal laterally.

As someone who has previously interned there (and had friends who interned there), be warned that the senior associates will be rude, and face-time partners almost non-existent. Junior associates are relatively nicer, but would not exactly be there to mentor you.

However, the worst part of the firm would be their HR, who will be rude to you and of no help should you need it (especially once the internship is over).

And if you are interning with the GC team, be prepared to get work from the disputes team sitting in the delhi office post work hours.

One of my younger colleagues had very poor written and oral advocacy skills. However, he was tenacious, would never backway from challenges, and we knew he would be the first person in and last person out on tough days. He had good people skills too. I hired him at a time when I needed someone who could handle last minute challenges as our team was often engaged at the last minute in many litigations.

He is doing very well today.

Would he have been hired without al push? No. In fact, the person who interviewed him for my team rejected him.

This is an exception and not the norm. 9 out of 10 people are hired for drafting, research and then groomed for better advocacy skills.

You know your weakness. Work on it.

Better to do a 3 year llb from DU, NLS or NLUO or any other NLUs that provide 3 years courses. The point being, you're not adding anything with a ballb/ballb degree. My suggestion try DU, it's easier and will give you more time for internships, especially running ones. Otherwise in terms of brand NLS is the best. Please use the 3 years wisely or else you will waste years pursuing a master's that is absolutely not required except for a career in Academia. The amount of misguided kids I see pursuing masters and even PhD, without any interest in joining academia, is shocking. Please plan the next 3-5 years carefully.

Do not take a drop. NLUs are overrated when it comes to placements. Sure apart from the top 5, others are just similar. Moreover Symbi and Jindal both have international collaborations that nobody talks about. My friends did a semester abroad, all paid, thanks to the university since he has a great acadmic track record.

If you want litigation, university doesn't matter.

If you want judiciary, university doesn't matter.

If you want civil services, university doesn't matter.

If you want corporate, internships and PPO matter more.

There are two book written by P.C. Markanda

2) Arbitration ( commentary)

If you have these during your internship then you will have no problem for most issue in arbitration matter, these book can be referred to know the position of law

People have got into good PhD programs from NLS. I'm not sure how you would be eligible for a permanent position there without a PhD so am assuming its contractual, in which case leave doesn't make a difference since you'd have to interview for a permanent position again anyway. You need good, credible referees for the PhD. NLS has plenty of those on the faculty, but if you're confident of getting the recommendations you need from elsewhere or even from NLS without joining, then take whatever will help you publish well and put together a good application.

No, those are good colleges, plus MH Cet opens up avenues for GLC and ILS (even more so since you are MS student), both equally good with great prospects. Better to stick with these colleges rather than trying for CLAT which is again a fluke. Considering the number of people giving law entrances every year, you can never tell if the result turns out in your favour or not.

Thank you, I know but it's my parents and unfortunately they don't understand hoe litigation works vis a vis more conventional professions they just see my salary in peanuts v others my age earning in lakhs .... :( I couldn't do corporate due to health issues and never knew litigation would pay this low at that time, though it's my fault for not educating myself on this at the right time.

On what are the bvp people doing - (i) dad's business; (ii) marriage if woman; (iii) LPO's and any other such semi-legal job; (iv) some handful of people have actually ended up doing something meaningful, there's one guy who's a PA at CAM, one guy sometime back joined vaish as associate, bunch of other people too who've joined well known law firms.

2. Advice to you from your college senior (if you're targetting law firms) - all these people who've got into some or the other law firm, they've all worked hard in college, need not be the batch topper but definitely well read and internships are a must, and by internships I mean relevant internships in your respective area of specialization and not any random thing that comes your way, quality and alignment with the practice area you're aiming for matters more than number. So if you stick to bvp, just make sure you do as many relevant and quality internships as you possibly can, just get this one thing sorted and you'll do fine.

Also, just fyi - the formula mentioned above remains the same irrespective of whether you're in bvp or sls or any other college.

How is NLS as a place to work? I recently interviewed for a faculty position there and the interview went quite well. However, I have now received an offer from another law school (not taking names, don't want to dox myself) and they want a quick response. Is NLS worth the risk of losing this other opportunity? I know only a couple of faculty members at NLS. Both of them are senior and they seem to be very disenchanted with the place and with the VC. But I was wondering if an early career academic like me needs to worry about their concerns. The one thing that gave me a pause was that NLS does not provide UGC leave entitlements, including PhD leave. I hope to apply for a Phd after a few years of working. Should this be a dealbreaker? Could others please weigh in?

I wish I had enough to shut everyone up. I know litigation will reap dividends eventually and tried explaining the career trajectory to my parents but I see why they are not satisfied. My office does have good clientile and I try to interact with who ever I can but could only end up with a few pro bono / low paying independent clients as I understand they dont want to pay a junior. My heart always was here, I never had any issue with the work, its just the low pay and gruelling hours which leaves me little to no time to try my hand at anything else. But thank you, will keep what you said in mind, I hope I grow like you soon.

This issue is not addressed often enough. Given the demand and supply mismatch in the legal profession, studying law in India now, given the high costs involved, is an economic suicide. And this is without accounting for the massive disruption in the knowledge economy being caused by the AI disruption. Litigation is also not a meaningful economic recourse for people from the first generation. It might work out in the long run, but we're all dead in the long run.

Or OP could venture into something more profitable and less taxing than law. OP, I know it's easier said that done but please consider an MBA- save every penny you make if you have to, but please please consider an MBA- lit is not for everyone and the sooner one accepts it the better.

PS: Just to add - don't fall for UPSC trap. It's no good. Especially when you're 27 already - your promotional avenues won't be much and by your late 50s you'd be cribbing about how you'd never be the DGP (or whatever) or end up in ego-driven seniority-determination-litigation. Anyway, it's a waste of time & effort. Litigation demands patience & hard work. Put that in, and hope for the best.

In litigation, do not measure your worth by the money you're making. The certificates, degrees, etc. also have no value here. There is only one consideration: do you add any value (to the client)? If yes, you will grow upward.

I wouldn't say there's no hope - contrary to what everyone else here seems to be suggesting. I know someone who was very unserious about life till early thirties (and, as a corollary, had slept through law school & didn't know anything). I don't know what happened, but one fine day they decided to turn their life around. Put in the hard work to build the skills. The main task is getting independent work. Tap into your network, try to get work. If you don't have a big enough network already, work on building that. I've said this multiple times on this platform previously - your network is your net worth.

You're 27. That's baby years by litigation standards. There's a long, long way to go ahead. Persevere.

I think they will remain the same for the 27 batch, but only time will tell. Unfortunately, for campus placements, recruitment from law firms have tanked. Recruiters mostly come for in-house legal roles or random roles which have no relation to what you have studied for the past 5 years. However, if you want to move away from law, these may be a good option.

Better for you to try for a PPO rather than relying on college placements.

Social skills & proficiency at language is important, yes, but these things can be improved. They're skills, like any other. You have five years at law school. Use it. To the person telling everyone to quit law because of lack of social skills or poor language skills - I strongly differ. Social skills are of utmost importance, followed by grasp over language. But not enough reason to quit law itself.

Am curious to check, if someone is using AI apart from helping with diligence, preparing simpler agreements (like employment agreements, services agreements, NDAs), legal research?

In fact, literally the only connection I have with India at all ATM is the passport I am saddled with (haven't even been there for almost 18th months straight), which I don't have the option of getting rid of for a few years yet, and some family members who live there (indeed, I had forgotten last year on 15 August that it was Independence Day until I saw a tweet of the embassy of the country I am currently living in to India passing on their good wishes for the big day). 8 Lakhs to organise a moot is bonkers, judges aren’t usually paid at NLU’s, the travel is usually train tickets for prelim judges and airfare for the senior practitioners. Accommodation is also usually on campus and most resources utilised are pre existing. This is outright money minting similar to certificate courses and online competitions with registration fees working on volumes and one solicited internship opportunity every desperate law student runs after due to FOMO.

I didn't put myself in this situation on purpose, I literally tried everywhere and ended up taking the 1st job I got :(
