Let's have a VC who addresses the elementary and core infrastructural issues like serious water-logging problems in NUJS campus during the entire rainy season, Air-Conditioners in hostels, holding Convocations on time each year and bringing an end to the never construction work at NUJS. The extravagances of the VC, like foreign trips, expensive hotel and resort bookings in Hyatt and JW Marriott, as well as expensive gifting, should come down. There should be thorough investigations into the irregularities in appointments made by the current VC. Despite all its efforts by the faculty and students, NUJS suffers from a low perception, which is affecting its NIRF and NAAC ratings because of this sorry state of affairs. It's time to rescue NUJS from the hands of unworthy people in control. Last but not least, let's have a VC who has spine and is an independent decision maker and who is also less gullible towards people around working closely with him.

I am confused of my career prospects. I have been working in a firm specialising in corporate and insolvency litigations before NCLT & NCLAT, though I love the practise and the work, i would love to do some tax litigation (indirect tax)

However, indirect tax seems to be a niche practise and doesn’t seem to pay off in the end. (Mind you, I am based out of Chennai so I really don’t have varied options in terms of law firms) Unless the GSTAT gets fully functioning, there would be more reason to shift to indirect tax as an inevitable boom of cases will happen once the tribunal gets functioning

The problem is that you don’t find lawyers practising both indirect tax and company & insolvency litigation, the closest thing you would fund are senior counsels but they practise almost every type of law so I am not keen on going through that route

So now I am at crossroads, I really don’t know what route shall I pursue

And as someone who has been to a (though I say it myself pretty good) UK uni for undergraduate studies in law (one of the London Russell Group ones), happy to confirm that it's not at all uncommon to find LLB students of 19, 20 or even 21 years of age studying there. In fact, even though law is usually taken as a first undergraduate in the UK, I have seen a number of people do it as a second undergraduate (including a number of Indians, who took a degree in some non-law subject first and then came to a UK uni for law). Such people were around 21, 22 years of age. Many of the best students I knew were like that, including those who secured magic circle jobs and jobs in the London operations of Amlaw20 law firms. And let's face it, the types of people who, even in the UK (whose system of undergraduate law degrees is similar to our own in many ways) get jobs in these places is so diverse, it's literally amazing to read about some of them or hear about them. One of my friends at a magic circle firm told me that one of her fellow trainees in her trainee cohort completed undergraduate and master's degrees in English literature and was on the point of completing a DPhil in English at Oxford (a 'DPhil' is Oxford's fancy name for the degree other unis call 'PhD') before changing careers and going in for law. Can you even imagine the age of someone completing a PhD in English and then going in for law? Therefore, if nobody unnecessarily makes life difficult because of age in India, and you now have a first hand account that even in the UK (which is a popular destination for Indian lawyers - of the academic and practicing variety - at all stages of their career), there is no such issue, why would you need to bother about it?

Two law students from a bangalore law college (who were appointed amicus curiae by a reputed justice) had helped the court in arriving at a focal point in question of law for determining the grant of bail in the present case.

The court in it's order had given them the credit, due to their assistance, the final paragraph.

Unsurprisingly, the Bar association of kerala high court has condemned this practice and sent a "strongly worded" letter to the CJ of HC
Their reason?
--That appointment of law students as amici undermines the active assistance given by the advocates appearing for the parties as well as the other advocates in the Court.
(Mind you, the kerala high court had taken the consent of advocates prior to appointing the 2 students as amicus)
--According to the letter, a KHCAA nominated advocate would best represent the advocates community.

I feel my work takes up a lot of time, and I feel I need atleast 5 more years to make a name for myself. But that would mean hitting my mid-30s.

I am not into having a kid or a family. A marriage is not a problem. But I don't want a spouse who pushes for kids. How do I deal with this feeling ?

There’s 2 sides to this answer - take it from someone who’s currently working with a T1 ECM team.

On some levels, the general discourse that you hear around the ECM practice is true. The hours are gruelling, the work is fairly repetitive and boring and you’re almost always in a very high stress environment.

However, it’s not as bad as a lot of people will try to convince you. One important thing to note is that the ECM practice is growing at a really good pace in the country right now. A huge function of this is just the macro-economic environment we are in right now. The practice is very cyclical in nature. In bull-market quarters, you’ll be inundated with work and will barely have any time for yourself. However, in bear market conditions, you’ll be relatively more free (even more so than your friends in other relatively chiller teams). Another important factor is the money. Calling a spade a spade - most corporate lawyers get into the field for the money. Though the pay across teams is fairly similar (atleast in the beginning of your career) at most firms, the hikes across both fixed and variable components will generally be higher for ECM practices than some other large practice areas. There’s multiple reasons for this - growing economy, bulli-ish public market sentiments and the fact that utilisation and billable hours are huge factors in appraisals (for law firms).

I’d recommend you do a proper, rational pros and cons analysis before you make your mind about the practice area. Go in with no predispositions and biases - give it a fair shot. Personally, there are days when i hate my job and days where everything seems sorry of meh (sorry if you were looking for a more encouraging answer xD. Just trying to give you my honest opinion). Would love to know — where did you intern that actually felt worth it in terms of learning and real exposure? Firms, chambers, orgs — open to all.

I get that interns need to be proactive to get work, but I’m trying to figure out which places are known to give interns something meaningful to do. Drop your recommendations please!

CAM definitely is not rank centric to the extent of SAM. Have seen people with the extremely strong recommendations from the team get rejected for a PPO at SAM for having a batch rank of 20 something.

The same would definitely not happen at CAM or AZB, have seen people around rank 30 get placed year after year with them, of course having a strong profile otherwise.

Look people are terrible here in general - everybody look down upon everyone and nobody is happy for each other. The batch rankers who have very apparently not been able to get a job despite the RCC push, inflated grades and internal faculty references; have all the reasons to whine on an anonymous platform like this. Folks who are genuinely smart will gradually (if not today) do better than those spineless bell curve heroes.

My Lords, we are not denying the problem of some stray dogs biting people. But this cannot be the solution. We all know how the Indian bureaucracy works. They have no common sense or empathy. Also, my Lords, to punish all dogs because some dogs have bitten people is like punishing all humans because some humans are bad.

Genuinely curious here. Many of these reels show them taking business class flights, staying at five-star hotels abroad, etc. Many of the captions say that they are self-funding with their first internship stipend, first salary, first moot court prize money etc. But such trips will cost 4 to 5 lakhs at least. Isn't that a bit much, even if you are a CAM or AZB associate? Are these funded by credit card debts then?

I was so traumatised, that I was in therapy for a week.

Its question of scale. Earlier, there were few good firms and the firm sizes were small. So five good clients could sustain entire firm. Then say a senior partner wanted a larger share of pie, then he walked out with one of big clients. Now he would have still sustained with that one client, but after a point, the people who joined him can't grow because how much can you milk the major client? So from the same pie, you need to feed more, with consequent stress on mid level folks, who now need to take this whole stress for their own future (since the senior partner is still sitting pretty with his major client plus whatever he gets by virtue of being in the profession for a while). Thats the problem of T3 and T4. Replace the one senior partner in example with say, 3/4, and it's T2 issue. And for T1, same issue, that firm becomes large but obviously without adding proportionate clients so all new partners, who wouldn't have their books for obvious reasons, would struggle. That's the issue in nutshell. Then once you start getting execution pressure, you poach trained people from smaller firms by throwing money at them, and after few years, you'll be senior partner and they'll be fresh partners looking for sustaining themselves. And circle goes on.

Frankly, if you’re considering joining their team, think it through multiple times. I genuinely don’t believe you’ll gain much under her as a managing partner/principal associate. As for how she speaks to juniors—I’ll refrain from saying much; there’s already plenty written about it on Legally India.

However, dont let it demotivate you at this stage, its a well paying practice at a good team and there are a ton of vacancies, also mobility to move to the UK MC firms. The problems are low margin, extremely boring dry due diligence + backup work, and kinda inefficient seniors making timelines feel like hell. Possibly the worst practice wrt timelines.
