Could any Associates in JSA explain more how the bill sharing works? In practice how much over your compensation do Associates get over and above the retainership fee in case they are joining under an equity partner vs salaried partner. There is not much clarity on this.
Thanks!
In a good team (competition/ b&f/ top corp) an associate will easily bill 60-80 lakhs (realised). This comes out to 4-6 lakhs of bill share in a year.
Taking the lower end at 4 lakhs, an A1 compensation comes out as:
14.4L (fixed) + 4L (bill share) + 3.5L (bonus) = 22L
Contrast this with SAM/CAM/AZB which pay A1s between 21-23L, this is bang in middle.
Any money you make over and above the assumed 4L bill share will take you way above market standards. Know at least a couple of A1s last year who made 8/9L in bill share. You decide if that is market standard.
Now some people will still come and cry that bill share is a scam, for that reason I would like to clarify that low billing teams/disputes teams would probably see a bill share of 1/2L. So tread with caution.
Take an informed decision - happy to address any specifics. Cheers!
Also if you're working on fixed fee or blended rate matters, you can get screwed over by the final realised amount being far lesser than you expect.
Additional factor to consider is that in some cases, the bill may not be settled for ages so there may be months at stretch where you make no bill share.
If you're a junior at JSA, welcome aboard we have devised many many ways of screwing up your payouts. Arbitrary bonus bands, entirely made up retainer bands, bill share that is at the mercy of benevolent seniors, getting staffed on fixed fee relationship building diligences that pay nothing, we've thought of it all!
And how much amount you bill honestly depends on the partner you are under. There are some teams - M&A, PE, competition, etc, where the rates are on the higher side (especially foreign ones) and that translates to a sizeable amount on top of your fixed + whatever meagre bonus that they pay you. Compared to other T1 firms, the amount may come up to close to what is paid in other firms and in some high billing teams, might even exceed. But the catch is the client has to pay on time. Often invoices are pending and takes a lot of time of it to be cleared. So overall it's not a huge amount, but enough to cover the lower fixed and bonus that you get compared to most t1s, that is if you are in a team that bills good.
For context, as an A1, i made north of 22 LPA last FY.
Don't take it in your ego aw
Lakhs so even if you get 100 percent bonus as a salaried partner it’s only 20 lakhs so imagine the bonus for an associate.
A0-2.5L
A1- 3.5L
A2- 4L
A3- 5L
Idk about you but seems pretty market standard to me
Bill share for PA 1/2 also comes out at 12-15 lakhs
So you could look at 7*12 =84 + 12% of 5cr = 60, + 55 total of 1.99 cr as a senior RP in a high billing team.
Bill share jhakk maar ke aayegi.
Just cos a partner or team bills high don’t expect sizeable bill share to you.. it’s also a function of your performance & contribution on each matter.
It’s a wonderful concept to track performance throughout the year on a matter to matter basis rather than do an appraisal exercise at the end of the year.
Tumhari internship cancel
They have gamified the whole process where you can track your bill share/hours on a portal lol - not fun for mental health
AZB - 15.5 L
SAM - 16 L
CAM - 16 L
KCO - 15.8 L
stop embarrassing yourself, you've been exposed 😘
Or you think 2023 was a decade ago hmm
A fixed monthly retainer gives you peace of mind to plan, invest or spend. Getting 1 lakh one month and 2 lakh the next month and then back to 1 lakh one month is not for the faint hearted
