Who Gets the Law Firm Job and How You Can Be That Who (A Poodle)
I own a Gaddi dog (an Indian sheep dog) called Sheroo. He is a 120 pound sheep dog who can bring a wild cat or a wolf down. I have kept him for the protection of my cattle. Sheroo is brown, big, shaggy and so obedient and intelligent that he sometimes even writes a blog post for me. Ha! Just kidding. But he is really obedient and intelligent, mind you.
Once I heard of a big dog show in Delhi. I heard the prize money for the ‘Best Allround Dog’ was 50k. Money led me in. It was a big show. So many dogs had come in. I had never seen dogs of such variety.
People bought many dogs too. A dog (a Poodle) got sold for 1 lac rupees. A maid servant, who had been working for a family since the last 10 years and had not earned 1 lac till now brought the Poodle home. The poodle was treated so well by the family. I wish the maid was also a Poodle.
Anyways, I went to the registration desk to register Sheroo.
“Which breed”?, asked the official.
“Gaddi kutta hai janab (It is a Gaddi Dog)”, I answered.
“That’s no breed”, he spat back.
“Sir, he is obedient and very intelligent. He guards my buffaloes and cows”, I said politely.
“No. He can’t be registered”, he was indifferent.
“But...”, I tried salvaging but he did not budge. That man was a savage. I saw he owned a Rottweiler. Ha!
Anyway I had a look what the dogs with their trainers did. They did really well. The Poodle had won the competitioin. But I am sure my Sheroo would have done equally well. But he was of no breed. Just a Gaddi dog; very obedient and very intelligent.
When I was returning back a friend who was interning at a large law firm in Mumbai called, “Yaar. They didn’t give me a PPO”.
My friend is not from a National Law School. He was sad, so was my Sheroo.
The Poodle was happy. He was small and a bit dumb too. But he was a Poodle and imported from Britain.
BTW, did I tell you that a foreign degree will hold you in good stead for a law firm job? I wish everyone was a Poodle.
When I went back home I trimmed my sheep like they trim Poodles.
My fellow villagers don't read my blog but they tell me I am unusual and subtly brilliant, even when it comes to shearing my sheep.

and national law colleges make u slog all year long - life is not one big party like in many other colleges.
Little sheroo was a gaddi dog by birth hence its unfortunate that the dog show treated him with scorn ...........................entry to a national law college is by choice and involves a great deal of hard work and great calibre.
The dog show was clearly a beauty contest had it been a dog talent show little sherroo with his ability to protect cattle may have won hands down !!

but you seem to be completely unable to take any criticism - other than praise - with good grace; your sheer obnoxiousness is disgusting.
there are many others who will continue to read you, and no doubt you will not notice the difference, but i, for one, am not coming back.

i dnt agree with your stand...every big law firm goes for either NLS without giving opportunity to any deserving lawyer who is nt frm any NLS...thats not a good practice... our profession is not about being working consistently 24 hours round the corner doing research only instead its about applying mind too while working which I dont find that every NLS guys can have..so why the diffrenec then... i appreciate that NLS must be getting good placements but still other law students must be given opportunity at least to show off their potentials...

non nlu students are not as disadvantaged as we/they make themselves out to be. in my admittedly limited observation, their attendance and assessment requirements are comparatively relaxed, and they have excellent libraries and very decent regular faculty, especially if they are older law schools. This means that while NLU students compete fiercely for a one-month slot at a top-5 firm, these students may intern for months together year-round. Further their CVs can - and have- been as good or better than their NLU compatriots. Our assessment system is rather punishing, whereas the GLC/ILS (for example) student may utilise all the extra time he has writing papers and making use of his library; publications are a very compelling part of a CV. There is more time for moots as well.
I noticed that while NLU students have an instant recall value, so do colleges like GLC, Symbi, ILS and ULC in law firms within their own states. And recall value does not instantly translate to 'good opinion'. The burden of garnering a good opinion remains about the same; in fact I'd say the burden is higher on the NLU student. Only lower-to-mid level firms are instantly dazzled by an NLU name. None of the top firms are.
As for connections, I find that both NLU students and non NLU students are at par here; connections have nothing to do with alma mater and may be exercised irrespective thereof. The only real disadvantage I'd say the non NLU students face is when they are from those colleges where their attendance requirements are so low that they intern pretty much year-round. The fallout here is that, unless they are mooters, they rarely seem to possess legal knowledge that a median NLUite does, and this is because the NLUite is forced to attend 70% classes and give many many more tests. Lastly, the two firms I worked with had a healthy Symbi/GLC representation.
