We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.

- 4 year BBA with 1 year in Mumbai/Singapore, 1 year in Dubai and 2 years in Sydney.
- Option to apply for a 2 year work permit in Australia
- In terms of brand value, SP Jain's MBA course is pretty old and ranked in QS, Financial Times etc. Alumni include CEOs/VPs of many MNCs in India
If course fees is not a consideration, would you choose it over a BALLB from a tier 1 NLU like NLSIU or NALSAR? What about lower-ranked NLUs and Jindal?
sorry for the rant, but just wanted to ask, are there certain firms that categorically just look for the premium NLU brand? have any of you seen something similar elsewhere? would love to hear.
Only the capable ones can get a 100% tuition scholarship.
I myself got a Foreign llm but I didn't get a full scholarship. Only 30% was covered.
Question is whether this exercise is worth it or now? Foreign LLMs make sense in China and Russia as it helps you fetch international clients. And foreign llm makes you more approachable for Foreign clients.
But in India, it doesn't have any such advantage. As all Indian lawyers speak English and can communicate with foreign clients with ease. There are no cultural barriers.
If you are a senior counsel or partners child - then you can consider the LLM as a paid fun foreign vacation where you can gain some exposure, teaching is really good. If you are not that rich, just don't go. Work some years. Save money and go for exed or maybe even a real vacation. It's just not worth it.
Do I regret doing the LLM? Not really. But 50L was a huge amount to shell out and it hasn't provided me much ROI
- Solid alumni network and preferences which marks nlu a closely knit cabal where outsiders are not allowed .
- Excessive overlooking on other colleges by firms, companies, PSUs and even the bar council.
- Very less prospects of holding prominent. positions in the future - Partner or GC in prestigious organizations ,unless u are very well connected.
- same goes for central universities in the case of competitive exams and teaching positions in prestigious colleges and think tanks .
Is this correct? Can anyone from the firm confirm?
Also, how's what percentage of the bonus is actually paid?
Re SOAS/QM/Warwick, you can get in with 55%. They set no 60% condition for me. Same for Melbourne, UNSW and NUS (Melbourne and UNSW were my back-up colleges, didn't apply to NUS).
The 60% figure is based on the old DU formula of 60% being first div. I think these overseas colleges will have to revisit this in future. In the olden days the majority of applicants were DU grads. Now NLU and Jindal grads make up the majority, with Symbi, Bennett etc also joining the fray.
P.S. For those curious, I had no scholarship. I chose KCL in the end because my sister was already doing her PhD in the science field there and she arranged a very good campus job for me through her contacts, which helped me reduce my expenses. My first choice was actually UNSW because of certain courses not offered elsewhere, but I had no scholarship there.
How did you apply to Touchstone?? Through their form or had a mail id??
In a smaller city, you can get this with 20 lakh per annum.
Mumbai ---> Shift to Thane or Kalyan. makes sense.
Pls can someone having anonymous gmail id create an excel sheet for everyone's benefit in similar format as available here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ltk2xnERP1OWklq60BEsJFhl3eSuQX7nQEdo_v37ggs/edit#gid=1214652949
Thanks a lot!!
After you begin interning, it's only your work that matters for your assessment. I know that ILS 2024 has placed more students through PPOs than some Tier 1 NLUs because of honest hardwork. Not shading anything to the NLUers, just that the college tag is largely irrelevant these days.
I have received an offer from SAM Chennai and am considering joining the office. Could someone provide insights into the work culture there?
They have committed more offences than hamas
And Indian government does not consider hamas a terrorist group.
This was the week it was supposed to happen as per the schedule, now itโs over. So perhaps next week hopefully
Either way, made a bad paper overall, results will be surprising - not for me though, it wonโt happen ๐
- Luxury apartment - Chauffeur driver Merc
- Membership of Taj Chambers, RBYC etc
- Elite Amex Credit Card
- First class international air travel (or at least business class)
- Diwali gifts like Rolex watch, LVMH bag etc.
Somehow this post stinks of Delhi!
Within a very few years (1-3) of working; you won't care where someone graduated from, and the only thing you will care for is: whether the person you are working with is a good lawyer and a decent human being. If you can achieve both, then you are golden.
Aside from the unsolicited advice^ my father and his friends (all vv rich men) play squash, golf, and bridge. See if you enjoy these activities.
Would love to hear from ya!
All the best, you got this!
Just check out how many engineering and MBA colleges are there.
Corp lawyers pls help
You think NLS organises talks and seminars every day? Lol, where did you get that idea?
HLS and NUS are great examples, but neither NLS nor JGLS nor any other Indian law school comes anywhere even close to them, so it seems that all of the Indian law schools need to work harder.
As for student achievements, if supposedly great faculty cannot produce students who do better in all or most walks of life, then what good are such faculty? NLS or Jindal students are not ahead in any metric, which is why all these claims of them having superior faculty are hollow.
The BIGGEST factor in all of this sadly is luck. Biglaw is a huge career path in the UK - right up there with IB/consulting - and itโs not even limited to law grads. Anyone in their final year in college can (and does) apply for a TC. So the only time that these firms start looking to hire international lateral candidates is when there are huge market dislocations (think Covid) or that particular firm has lost a lot of people to competitors. Basically, itโs very rare.
They are trained within 2-3 months, and work as paralegals or munshis.
in general you will never see GLC kids winning moots/research etc. or doing anything other than corporate law, they just don't know how and GLC does not give you those opportunities.
A great law school is one:
Where research is a way of life - faculty research is published and celebrated every day, students researching and publishing, the law school ecosystem is regular and relentless in knowledge creation.
Where conferences, seminars, workshops, talks organised every day not once in a month.
Where scholars, practitioners and jurists involved on regular basis throughout the year inspiring young minds and not a SC judge invited in a convocation.
Harvard Law School or NUS Singapore are classic examples how world-class law schools should be.
GNLU and NUJS need to work harder. Posts on LI won't help.
1999 - 60% (BJP 182, INC 114) 2004 - 58% (BJP 138, INC 145)) 2009 - 58.2% (BJP 116, INC 206) 2014 - 66.4% (BJP 282, INC 44) 2019 - 67.4% (BJP 303, INC 52)
1. S&R Associates
2. Anagram Partners
3. Quillon
4. Touchstone Partners (although took them a month and a half to respond)
5. VeristLaw
May I also please request the readers of LI to please cast their vote. It is the first ever election for our generation and we can save India from becoming a fascist dictatorship, so please don't skip it.
Outside Campus- Not sure how they are imposing this on grown-up adults.
The police case from what I hear has also gone to the High Court.
Yes the VC has got an extension so the matter will now be decided at the High Court.
It is not in good faith to claim โPalestinians are not all Hamas โ when you donโt stop people in your movement from waving the hezbollah and Hamas flags. Itโs not in good faith to claim that there are innocent Palestinians and babies that have been harmed ( which anyone would be sympathetic to) But then to use that sympathy to sloganeer about how youโre proud of the martyrs of oct 7.
Mods : you clearly cannot moderate these topics. You always let these conversations start and then fail at moderating fairly mid way through. It would be better to not allow the misinformation in the first place. Youโre under no pressure to let someone post some nonsense about this culture war in America every week or about the real war in Israel. Itโs the honourable thing to go : โwe just are not equipped to keep moderating these argumentsโ and just stop.

1. Exploit the election window. Report this to the press and go to the HC/SC asap. This will get you mileage and statements of support from the opposition. The government will act.
2. Next, exploit the window when Chandrachud nears retirement and goes into popular mode. Go file a petition again and seek relief.
If money not an issue, JGLS could be preferred over all other law schools in India except NLS, Nalsar & NLU Delhi.
It depends on tiers.
In India majority of law firms are family owned (amarchand, Trilegal etc)...........
Trilegal is the first firm (non family full merit),....
soas - anything more than 60%
if you have that marks and can pay, they will take you
They have lawyers who advise on deal structuring as well. Do you have any thoughts or insights? Salary for their M&A team?

If you are first years, I can understand the excitement, even for 2nd years. But for third year and beyond, please get therapy, I'm not even mocking you, this isn't healthy. I think one post each highlighting achievements (TCs, UPSC, judiciary and so on) is enough, and is interesting for us to also read. Beyond that I just get concerned.
Why does it happen overwhelmingly so for T1 kids? I would've assumed T3 kids would be chill, T2 would be insecure and T1s to be the quiet achievers.
In 2019, the EC led by KD had terminated the services of the ex-AR Admin after allowing him due opportunity to be heard. The ex-AR Admin had sent in his written representation via a certain Assistant Prof. Following the termination of services, the ex-AR Admin went to Cal HC and Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya was hearing the matter before her transfer to Telangana HC.
In 2024, the aforementioned teach (now an Associate Prof) complained to the Chancellor and LCC Barasat against the VC. Apparently she also lodged a FIR too and the police queried the Registrar and two associate profs. Are you telling me that the complainant has now gone to the Cal HC?
1) Hoping to find someone powerful who shows sympathy and puts us out of our misery.
I believe it's a long shot but maybe my stars might align.
2) Suggest me ways through which I could anonymously help my batchmates without me getting suspended, killed or given backlogs in 6 subjects. (They won't kill me. Right?)
