Citadel does commercial and corporate litigation mostly. The firm is run by ex-Argus founding partner, right? You can get a lot of gen corp work there but again the firm has been touted to be a difficult place to work at.

Fox has some M&A mandates. Argus has 1 retainer client and is more inclined towards restructuring and banking documentation. Ashlar is a project finance shop. SAM is not preferred in the circuit. KCO is market leader for banking and private M&A work. Citadel is a joke.

This is a reasonably accurate depiction. But for anyone interested in calcutta transactions, they should really be tracking what the national firms with no calcutta offices are doing, as interesting mandates are typically not handled by local partners but partners in Mumbai or Delhi.

To anyone who is interested: Try to find out more on those lines if you're interested in a calcutta based career.

Cal law firms are not M&A/PE/VC heavy. Only dominant player in the field is KCo Kolkata. Any other firm that would have some M&A/PE/VC work (which would be really some) would lack mentoring and not have a brand value outside Kolkata. So in the long run very difficult to transition to a better firm (whether T1/2/3) unless you have a point of contact there and still then your Kolkata M&A/PE/VC PQE might get discounted and you may not be a preferred candidate. Argus M&A/PE/VC is not transaction heavy from what I have heard. SAM Kolkata is only a back office and does not hire. It's totally absent in the Kolkata M&A scene. So there's no option in Kolkata barring KCo Kolkata for M&A/PE/VC work. Unless you get to be in KCo, avoid Kolkata for M&A/PE/VC altogether.
