i am in sls noida and according to the placement shown by the college we have at least 26 students placed in tier 1 plus good tier 2 law firms though i did not join the meeting but the screenshots for the same were sent to us. Other than this maybe students are also placed in companies but these 26 were given to us with names. I know they are not much but it is more than what the people on this site told me. It has taught me not to blindly believe everything said here. The teachers at SLS N are also very supportive and if you stay away from all the wrong things you can do well for yourself. SLS P though already has a reputation and much better placements. If I was in your place I would have chosen SLS P in a heartbeat. I would have regretted that I spent so much money on a nice college but let go of the best option I had just because of money. I am saying this as someone from lower middle class studying in SLS Noida on a loan.

Hi, I'm an A2, and had a similar dilemma when I first joined a T1. Here are a few options that could help:

1. Van Heusen and Allen Solly are the OGs. I have worn the shirts and pants at least a hundred times in the last 2 years but the quality has remained;

2. For slightly cheaper options, Westside has good options, but I felt they lacked a bit of quality.

Utter rubbish. AM is one of the best classroom teachers I've come across and I've studied at NLU and ivy league places. He has never indulged in favouritism in evaluation. Just because you didn't pay any attention and couldn't bother to put in the effort, that doesn't mean that you should malign the teacher for your poor grades.

I was having a discussion with my friend who is into Litigation and is looking for a switch. He secured a job offer from one of the law firms, paying him 70K per month and appointing as a SA. What he said to and I want the opinion of all you guys, that do the Tier -1 and Tier-2 law firms discard/discredit any experience if it is not from any known law firms ? Is this the usual practice followed across all law firms ?

The NLU bashing on this thread does not reflect the reality. While an average IIT-IIM guy is in all likelihood better than an average NLU guy. But a good student in a top 3 NLU is better than an average student at Mid tier IIT or a lower branch student at a top IIT. Furthermore, except hardcore tech, most of these jobs don't require as big a skill as most people on this forum think it does. If corp lawyers are glorified stenos, these bankers and financial analysts are no scientists. There is a reason why for decades the highest paying investment banking firms in this world have hired from pretty much any discipline, given the candidate is decently smart enough and can take long hours.

The biggest problem on this forum is people keep yapping about STEM, IIT-IIM without any real life experience or idea. And yes if you're wondering if I have any idea, trust me or not, but I do.

When we're talking about theories of private law- that sort of research is best done in universities, industry really has no space for it. Think of the work Nigam Nuggehalli or Akshaya Kamalnath or Shyam Balaganesh or Umakanth Varottil do- theres an academic and theoretical nature to their work that doesnt translate to an industry job.

I dont think there are any meaningful collaborations that university professors in India are engaged in to be honest. These projects are hard to sustain and hard to succeed.

My perspective is that with tech law in particular, because there are plenty of opportunities in industry and in civil society organisations , because those jobs pay more and offer more flexibility and control than university jobs- the best scholars in that specific field are probably found outside of the university system. I gave examples of those names.

Now, coming to the interview part. There will be 2 rounds. First is the HR round and then a lawyer.

Now here is the catch. People hardly ever get through the HR round. Reading the mentioned threat, I failed to understand how come that is, but when I interviewed with their HR and answered all but one of her questions and still wasn't given a go-ahead for the lawyer round, it all started making sense.

I don't know honestly what it is that the firm is looking for. They asked the most basic HR questions. Then some random questions to see if I'm aware of any recent legal developments, if I know any of their deals and what they did in it, etc. I knew all of this since I was quite prepared before my interview. But I was shocked when they rejected me at the HR round itself.

You all should try coming to NUJS once. Barring like 4-5 faculty in this college, every professor marks you by the role of a dice. You may write 14 pages of substance, but the person next to you who faffs for 25 pages with silly drawings and fancy highlighting and shit will score much more than you. We've had faculty marking students who aren't even in college any longer higher than most of the present students. The admin doesn't care and neither do most students.

Get a good broker and invest directly in stocks --- someone who knows all the lobbyists and fixers. That'll give you the quickest and best returns. I did the same and made good money. No, they dont ask technical questions. But yes if you want to get in, make sure to answer no when they ask "Would you mind work coming from other areas of law" cause they don't have dedicated teams as such. Their whole team works on one proposition if the client is a deep pocket. Goodluck

I know you haven't asked for this advice, but you have other options than a Stephens + JD or a Stephens + three year Indian LLB or Indian LLB + American LLM open to you. You may wish to consider these too.

I know of someone in England that did an undergrad at Stephens and then an LLB at Durham. The guy has secured a training contract at Latham & Watkins' London office (Latham being an American law firm, and one of the largest in the world). So even if the U.S. doesn't work out immediately, you still do have the other options, such as the possibility of going to England with an Indian undergraduate degree which is not in law and studying/practicing there. NB: Don't try NALSAR BALLB + LLB in England, because the visa authorities in England don't allow that kind of thing. An LLB from England would be (i) on the same academic level as your NALSAR BALLB (i.e., Bachelors degree, RQF Level 6); and (ii) in the same subject, meaning that an LLB in England after a BALLB in NALSAR wouldn't represent 'academic progression', which the British rules on student visas consider to be very important. If, like the guy I know, you were to get a TC at a big American firm in London with a combination of a Stephens BA + an LLB from a Russell Group university, you could have a few years' PQE in London, sort yourself out with a British passport and immigrate to the U.S. with that. A longer pathway, but still gets you to your eventual goal. Immigration rules justification: you could do two undergraduate degrees - a Stephens BA + a UK LLB - because, while both of them are at RQF Level 6, they are degrees in different subjects, and as they lead to a career in the law, would still constitute a credible academic plan.

Or if you really want to have all manner of experiences, some UK law schools (King's, UCL and LSE specifically) have what are called 'dual degree partnerships' with U.S. universities. Essentially, you do a four year law degree, called LLB - JD, recognised for purposes of being a practicing lawyer in both the UK and the U.S. Two of your four years are spent studying law in the UK, and two years are spent studying law in the U.S. To give you a sense of what the partnerships for such degrees look like, King's collaborates with Georgetown, giving its English and American Law degree holders a degree of LLB - JD (two years spent at King's and two at Georgetown) and both UCL and LSE have collaborations with Columbia (so, depending on where you get admitted in the UK, you would spend two years in the UK at UCL or LSE, and two years at Columbia), getting a qualifying law degree that could allow you to practice in both England and Wales and the U.S.

Private law research can and does get done outside universities. Vidhi is an example. Which university in this country has done stellar work in private law exactly? If the work that you do is good enough and socially relevant, you can do that outside the university and earn a comfortable living. On the other hand, universities in India will require you to do classroom teaching and pointless admin work. However, despite such circumstances, there are good people doing almost all kinds of law both within and outside university space. You forget that if someone does good work in tech law or private law within a university, then chances are they will be asked to work with people outside the university too.

If you're an on-site intern in the Bangalore office then in terms of the amount of work our TMT team might be a better choice since both the FinTech and the Data team work out of the Bangalore office.

With regards to how helpful associates are, I would say you can ask as many questions to gain clarity on the deliverable and no one will mind.

It’s all right if you are not as intelligent as NLS students, not everyone can be so intelligent of course, but then don’t demand and disparage those who are wiser than you and have worked harder than you.

People generally dont want to work hard. I teach at a law school and I read answer scripts thoroughly, honestly most of my students shouldn't pass but I turn the other way and lower the standard and pass them. Projects- its all chat gpt now. Its embarrassing to read. When I joined I thought students wanted to be held accountable and to be taught- but for my trouble I got a reputation as "strict" as having standards that are too high, and students complained about me and give me poor feedback while preferring my colleagues who cancelled classes for half the term. No students seemed to really care about learning- only about getting through any means a gpa a law firm would accept.

My incentives then as a professor is to make my own life easy- hand out free grades, look the other way with cheating, reduce my teaching load as much as possible, work on research and publications and improve my own CV for promotions, spend time with my family, reduce conflict in my life.

People who can bear to live with the corruption stay at my law school- those who cant leave. So over time- you get more and more alone. Why cause drama for yourself?

Just because an exam is arbitrary, doesn’t make it tough in any sense whatsoever. It might make the exam unpredictable but that unpredictability can even stretch for UPSC as well. If you are good, you will do well regardless. This year’s clat paper tested skills which can make even a mermaid secure AIR 1. You need to look at the precedents too. I had a 250ish rank in clat yet I couldn’t clear lsat us in the first attempt. If you are talking about lsat India, then that’s a different thing. Overall LSAT US is much tougher than CLAT.
