Can someone suggest boutique law firms that are likely to accept my applications? Also do you have any suggestions on how to tailor my cover letter to get better responses or if thereβs anything I can respond with to the rejections? I really want to make up for all the lost time
1. Fees are damn high, so already the economic cream of the society or those with affluent law backgrounds decides to pursue Law in here, barring a few exceptions which are here on loan or on the verge of taking one. So, not the best minds even apply to give SLAT.
2. CLAT/AILET/Jindal already takes away the best candidates from this "economic cream", so the competition gets lesser.
3. I have this feeling that all you need is luck in the first round of SLAT and somehow score. GK sections like CLAT can come from anywhere around the world, but the twist is there is no negative marking, so people end up betting on luck. Guess what? This applies to all the sections, and a person with a basic IQ, mathematical skills, legal knowledge, and luck can easily get 45+/60, which pretty much confirms the seat.
4. Then the most renowned part, "Personal Interview", is basically a strategy for the college and students to say, "Oh, we do not just choose on the basis of one exam, but we test overall aptitude". No way it is fair. Everyone gets a different set of faculties who have different mood swings during a certain time and can ask you anything. It is again luck as to what they ask if your answer is objectively correct, can subjectively make them satisfied, etc.
But well, it's still a big deal since it is considered the "2nd best Private University", and not everyone can make it to SLS Pune, and people have to resort to going to the smaller branches or drop the idea as a whole.
Also, who said Symbi couldn't match the feats of the Top 5 NLUs?? You all cannot beat us in having the worst management of all law colleges, high faculty attrition, having our LLM Alumni who are 5 year older than us teach us as their part-time job at sub-par salary, overburdening students with compulsory committee works while managing twenty internal assignments per semester and attending online lectures while having goddamn internships (Yes this time they had the audacity to give us around 10-12 internals in our only semester break LOL and we have our internal moot season next month). So yes let us debate which T1 NLU can beat us to this level of mismanagement.

Please help me out as I have an interview in a few days.
Also, whereas CLAT is held all over India and attracts students from ordinary backgrounds and schools, Jindal only caters to students from 7-8 cities and from elite schools. The LSAT was only held in these cities and now the LNAT will continue to be held in this cities.
Cons: Unable to get good consensus or decisions in many of those judgments
To be clear- sudhir isnt using anything as his identity. Hes not built his career talking about his identity. He hasnt sought to tell a sob story in any interview he's done. People on here defending him on this point are bringing up whats true about his background ( that his family was indeed poor and uneducated) to point out that calling him an elitist assumes that poor people all must believe or think one kind of thing, and rich people all must believe in another thing and behave in another way. They dont. It turns out life is more complicated and human beings are more interesting and the truth is more elusive than that.
An identity generally isnt a card to be used to win arguments on internet- its about your lived experiences and how they might inform what you make of yourself and what choices you make.
People concerned about non teaching staff must first ask why they were improperly hired and whether or not it was a good thing for them to be properly hired.
B. Competent faculty is fine, but the thing that the students had asked for is that if two or more sections are being taught a subject, then the same faculty teaches the same module to all three and another can teach the other modules to all three and so on. That's the only fair thing, considering the large disparity between faculty quality and experience. However, the VC refuses to even consider that.
But how much progress have we made? Barring the Jindal rapists, no one has been punished. Most of the NLU βstarsβ have moved on to cushy jobs at T1 firms and places at universities abroad (ironically, cosplaying as woke and specialising in human rights).
Today, there is so much casual misogyny that continues at law schools: body shaming and βratingβ fresher girls; sharing crude jokes on WhatsApp about them: making predatory advances on them; passing crude comments from boys hostels at night etc etc.
So itβs hypocritical to see these people posting right nowβ¦

Therefore, if I'd got the chance to make that choice about my legal education again, I'd have thought about it the same way: top-ranked option - UK law schools; option no. 2 - one of the significant NLUs; option after that - universities in the U.S./Canada for a non-law degree. Reassuringly, no Jindal in the mix. Hope this clarifies things.

This strategic shift aligns JGLS with global best practices in legal education and ensures that candidates possess the analytical capabilities necessary for success in the rigorous study of law. The LNAT-UK, an internationally recognized test, is widely used by leading law schools in the United Kingdom and is renowned for its ability to assess candidatesβ aptitude for legal reasoning rather than their knowledge of specific legal subjects.
The LNAT-UK consists of a multiple-choice section and an essay component, both designed to assess candidatesβ critical thinking, comprehension, and reasoning abilities. Detailed information about the test format and preparation resources can be found on the official LNAT website....
Admission to JGLS will be done in two phases. The first phase of early admission process will commence on 1st September 2024 where students will register and take LNAT-UK Test during 1st September to 31st December 2024. Admission to these candidates will be offered in January 2025. The second phase of registration and taking the test will be 1st January to 31st May 2025 and students will be admitted in June for the remaining seats.

I am a fresh graduate (2024) from a decent State University known for everything other than placements, which is usually the case with every such university. We don't even have a placement cell and I know none of my seniors to be working in a law firm. People just don't go for that. However, we have Judicial Officers, Litigators, Assistant Professors and great number of seniors working in government agencies (which is, again usually the case).
I never intended to study here, but I believe fate to be one of the strongest forces out there. I wanted to be a SDE but my father (I won't say forced) asked me to appear for CLAT too. I did and I scored enough to bag mid to low tier NLUs (on my own). I also appeared for this state university and got in. This made me confident and during this time I also developed interest in law. I wanted to give myself another try but I didn't want to waste a year. I took admission in the state university while studying for CLAT alongside (the fee was peanuts compared to NLUs). Next year, Covid happened, I lost my shit and got promoted to third semester just like that. The idea to appear for CLAT just dwindled away. At this point, I was questioning my every life decision. I was really confused. I don't know why but I continued with the state university, really hoping to make something out of it. I got active, got a number of publications under my name, did not so famous moots, applied for internships, did a few decent ones. Obviously not T1/T2 and even T3 till my third year. I had no connections whatsoever then. I am sure I would have had a couple of T1 internships if stayed consistent but the weight of constant rejections made me lazy in my last year of law school - yes, in the most important year. Not that I was really active in my fourth year, it was still progress compared to my work in the last year.
My last 18 months went mostly with me travelling and writing. During breaks I stayed at home with my parents, went on trips w them, went on so many of them solo, played video games, started reading books, helped lawyers in my building with some drafting and research work and did everything instead of actually building myself a career in law.
Cut to now, I graduated from the state university with obviously no job in my hands. I really want to work in a law firm because I tend to like it naturally. I don't even mind the odd working hours and the somewhat toxic work culture. I started cold emailing every firm that I could find, started spending time on Linkedin, started connecting with PAs and SAs, all which in the start meant something but now has turned into a mindless grinding routine. It's been six months and I received ZERO callbacks or interviews. I also tried my connections but to no avail. All the offers I am getting right now are in really small law firms and litigators with almost nothing for a salary. My father keeps repeating that I shouldn't care for money at this age and only focus on learning but how could I, now that I am 24 y/o with friends earning great salaries along with 2-3 years of PQE.
I am aware of my mistakes but I can't really do anything about them now, what I can do is work on the future. I know I am still doing something wrong. I want to seek professional help but I don't think I have seniors working in the field. I don't know if my CV or cover letter actually work. I am again at the point where I don't know what to do. Please HELP!
Thank You
If there is a lot of work and not enough people they will hire. Else they will not. The only other circumstance is if you are exceptional as a resource that it is just impossible to say no to you. Like so brilliant that you would be an asset. And even then, they will see if your costs will be good enough to meet targets. They will never hire you if they donβt have sufficient work flow.

Maybe largest women's rights march in India since Nirbhaya march in Delhi?? Sure, we see such crowds in election rallies , but remember that these are college girls and aunties from middle-class and affluent backgrounds, not the rowdy crowd who step out for election rallies.
But justice might be elusive because the hospital was ransacked by a mob of thugs last night and all evidence and fingerprints likely destroyed from the crime scene. Courts can only convict on evidence.
Easy to guess who must have masterminded the mob attack...
What the terfs have always been saying turns out to be true. This has nothing to do with gender identity or rights of minorities, and everything to do with a man being upset that hes a man and wanting to beat up women for sport.

Downvote all you want, but this is the truth. Recruitment at Magic Circle firms will not be like jugaadu recruitment of Lala firms. They will value parameters other than having a high GPA at a tier 1 NLU.
Re UCC, the BJP lost seats in UP because the Muslim vote united and consolidated in favour of the Congress-Samajwadi coalition. Implementing a UCC will lead to further consolidation.
Re ONOE, clearly hasnβt learnt his lesson that voters will not vote for him as a unifying face and ignore regional and caste issues.
Re 2036, a giant scam waiting to happen, with lucrative contracts awarded to Adani/Ambani and IAS officers receiving kickbacks. The nation will also ask why Ahmedabad is hosting the Olympics despite very little sporting tradition in Gujarat and why taxpayers money across India will be spent on Gujarat. The obvious choices would be UP, Haryana and Delhi (or maybe all 3 states that if one includes NCR), Manipur and some of the southern states. Also Odisha because it hosted the Hockey World Cup and has promoted hockey.
Re India as a developed country by 2047, biggest jumla of all. Itβs impossible for India to ever become a developed country.

Only students who are worried about jobs think that recruiters must be appeased and catered to like they are modern day kings. These people are professionals who are recruiting other professionals. If you made a schedule that worked for the university and for them there is no reason for them to be offended. Those of us who have been working for a while know this already. We know that flagellation and brown-nosing isnt what makes us hire from a university or hire particular candidates or not. Its what we have a requirement for, and how can we get reliable smart people who can do the job we need them to.
Sudhir didnt cooperate with all these crazy demands like condoning attendance for interviews- what happened? did firms walk out of your day zero? of course they didnt. because its not some dick measuring contest about who is the bigger boss. its just about scheduling and everyone getting their work done.
PS: You can see clearly that the writing style of the above-pasted comment's author is different from my own by observing the fact that the author of that comment has chosen (rightly in my view, to show how contemptible and silly this discussion is) to be less careful with her punctuation etc. than I have. This, I hope, should prove, even to someone of the meanest intelligence like you, that I didn't perform the original noble act (whose fruit is the text pasted above) of sacrificing my time to explain something that should be perfectly obvious to a bunch of obstinate mules like you who clearly don't want to understand.
But while he does try to portray himself as all progressive and liberal, he just appears to be an elitist woke who isn't in touch with the realities. Preaches about the underprivilged kids taking the lead in legal education, yet misses out a majority of those meritorious kids by simply ignoring the descending state of NLUs, two of which he is the chancellor.
Additionally, like Chandrachud Sr., he has conceded to a majoritarian govt's stance on multiple ocassions, especially in instances like Art. 370, Maharashtra Defection or the LG case. Man accepted an Art 32 writ to give Arnab a bail on a vacation bench in less than 24 hours, but Kejriwal and so many other continue to remain in jail. He is no less than a hypocrite.
As far as the quality of the exam goes, LSAT India was a different exam than the LSAT US and had an image of being easy. It just had objective questions. On the other hand, the LNAT UK exam is that same for its Indian test centres and is a much tougher and better exam than LSAT India (and a million times better than the CLAT).
Since the Chief Justice (HC) is chancellor, the university would be given adequate time to comply
PS: no one is saying NLS is being run by Harv or Ox- where does that even come from?
Comparable faculty is a tough one. I've studied in oxbridge/HYS type university- there are sections there for the core law courses and some sections are taught by top names in the field and some are not- youre never going to have comparable. Theres only one Mark Lemley, one Sandra Fredman, One Laurence Tribe. Particularly because there just arent that many good indian law scholars who want to work in India. Some of them may have to be grown at NLS- that starts by hiring young faculty and mentoring and helping them grow. Maybe Pranav or Padmini or Sahana is the next Sidharth Chauhan or Aparna- you do have to wait and see. Sudhir has been hiring with urgency these last few years- but these things take time- he has poached a very good number of senior scholars from other law schools. What you can ask for is competent faculty. Are there faculty at nls who are failing to do their jobs and failing to do teach the materials properly? Are there faculty that cancel classes or are teaching subjects they know nothing about? If thats a concern- lets hear the specifics.
Delegation doesn't mean creating fiefdoms within university hierarchy. It means that officially incharge faculty will take most of the everyday decisions- but their decisions are still subject to scrutiny by the vice chancellor. If you can name a decision where sudhir has unfairly interfered then we can talk- but principally- hes the one thats blamed for everything under the sun- its only fair that he gets to decide what goes on then.
Moot funds is really tricky. Particularly because in the hierarchy of what the university is for- funding weeks long vacations for wealthy students who want to do international moots is low on the list. A good university should still be willing to explore ways in which to make moot funding possible- if only to make it possible for the poorer students to have these opportunities too- that might involve getting law firms or private corporations or alumni involved to some extent. Debate funding is honestly kind of ridiculous if its a national level debate- maybe for international level debates it might make some sense. In any case- back in my day universities had no funding for moots or debates and we just worked well in advance to secure funding by approaching law firms and alumni and private corporations. If you can do it for a festival or a party why not an actually good cause right?
In all of this- I would think a rational calm conversation with your vice chancellor is probably more productive than trying to drag his name through the mud online and resigning from being student body representatives and protesting. None of this is such a great injustice that calls asking him to quit are justified at all.
The university is growing and changing these last few years, there are a many balls to juggle and many things to prioritise. Perhaps you and I would come to different priorities than Sudhir and perhaps not- but that does not justify doing this to him.
Sudhir still does come out looking like a good admin to be honest- hes doing a lot to change and move the university forward- there will be growing pains and there will be disagreements. But NLS has not been at this exciting a place in terms of its growth since its finding.
What youre doing- essentially- is sweating the small stuff. If I go to a doctor, and I complain about coughing up blood , fainting, and skinning my knee. The doctor runs a series of tests checking me over for cancer , he comes up with a treatment plan, schedules me for chemo, tracks my progress, schedules an MRI and makes sure I didnt have a stroke and dont have diabetes and brings in specialists to diagnose and solve my problems. If while hes doing all of this I whinge about how hes ignoring my skinned knee and not giving me pain meds- most people would think thats ridiculous. They would think I was too emotionally overwhelmed by what was happening to me and so I was hyper focussing on minutia. They might even suspect that I didnt really want to be treated, I just wanted the medication.Yes a skinned knee is awful and painful- but the doctor needs to prioritise saving my life before he can think about medicating pain. Thats the circumstance Sudhir found himself in in 2019. And youre calling him a failure for honestly- pretty small issues in context of all that it takes to turn a university around.
You cannot in the same thread be arguing that Sudhir- by being who he is- by being a strict task master and not allowing free grades and free attendance and cheating is "causing harm" and at the same time argue that youre not being fragile. We all have bosses- we know that being held accountable for your work isnt causing harm- its just life.
I know what the current level of rigor is, I have taught at the university recently. It really isnt as bad as you make it out to be. Its- what 50 pages of reading for a subject every week? thats very easily doable.
There are olympic medal winners who didnt have access to equipment or proper training or anything- just the village around them putting in money to buy basic equipment. But if the country wants to dominate at the olympics the way that the US does- you need to invest money and time to spot talent, train athletes and bring about discipline across the board. Not doing that- actually wastes a lot of human potential and talent.
Every year maybe one or two toppers from 10-12 law schools apply to be rhodes scholars- im talking about serious applications that can get shortlisted. That number is really sad. It should be five times as much. Because there is that much talent among the law students across the country. Most people who can win those scholarships and can produce the kind of work are not incentivised to do so by a system that encourages mediocrity. they arent given the tools to even be in the running because law schools encourage short cuts and corruption in academic work, because weak administrators would rather hand out sops like free attendance and free marks than challenge their students to be better.
What sudhir is doing- that is going to make him unpopular in the short run, but its good for the country in the long run.
If not, then get ready. Be consistent in telling your story - your internships, your publications, your achievements, your experiences and your takeaways from them. Get ready to demonstrate the things that you have mentioned in your CV, whether it is how effectively you have managed the work assigned to you at your internship or the crap bundle of skills that is their just for the sake of it. Keep the contents of your CV relevant and aligned to the position you have applied for. Participate in the process, provide your inputs and discuss things.
Lastly, have the knowledge threshold. Be thorough, especially in the area you are interested in. Put your pricey law school education to test.
Be confident and you will be through. Keep up the attitude, be friendly and don't be bothered by the questions. No one can answer all the questions, but your response to them can make all the difference.
All the best!
And what exactly is CLAT doing? Shouldn't it check that its (founding) members are in compliance with relevant BCI, UGC, NAAC regulations etc.
And what of BCI? It went into a war with DU (check LI series by Kian) over lack of compliance etc. But simply takes penalty fees and whitewashes NLUs lacking affiliation.
