How so?? Isn't it a completely different practice area? Like isn't most of it telecom and media drudgery? Like aren't interns asked to research the taxability of bitcoins, FEMA applicability, whether bitcoin is secure, does ICO attract SEBI regulations etc.? - each of these questions deals with a very different area of law but interns need to know all of them to answer the query.

How is this the same as M&A? I'm genuinely curious

I recently got an internship confirmed by HR post my interview for March most likely for gen corp. What shall I expect? Been hearing a lot of negatives about KCO Noida. Is it any good? What are the odds of an PPO? Also what's the thing with virtual internships at KCO (though the mode of my internship is yet to be communicated)?

It's not worth being nice at all. Be selfish in life. Good deeds do NOT pay. NOBODY returns a favour or cares for you being nice to them, unless they want to date you.

In the professional sphere, you have to be selfish for what you want, be it money, positions etc. You can help others, but do NOT expect it back in return.

Hey, for tech x law geeks out there - is there a way to scrape judgements' PDF files off Manupatra ?(or atleast the names of the judgements). I know that there is a Github code to do this with IndiaKanoon (which I haven't figured out how to operationalise yet), but I'd prefer to do it on Manu, given its comprehensiveness and structured database.

Please let me know! Would make a lawyer's research 10x easier.

How does the process work? Suppose a client walks in and explains their issues.

Do lawyers refer to bare acts while speaking with the client, or do they already know which laws apply and explain their strategy right away? Also, do they refer to the bare acts in court during arguments, or do they primarily use an iPad for accessing laws?

I have a good resume and all my 5 internships till date were without interview ( disputes).

Now I've started to give interviews for good firms and till now I have given 3 and all 3 rejected me after interview.

I am not able to clear interview of any firm, how do I improve and what should I focus on

the chances of employment are the same as an llb you may get a bump maybe because you are specialised. for academia you will still gave to clear ugc net which is akin to gambling imo since the question paper covers all the laws, the syllabus is vast and incredibly difficult because of it.

if you want to go into academia with relatively less put in but expensive, id recommend and llm from a good uni outside india. some private uni may take you like munjal or jindal

There's one piece of good, general advice I can give you (not related to TMT, but about life in the law in India generally).

When me and my parents were visiting a friend of my dad's who lives in Toronto and who studied for an MBA with my dad, my mum became very fascinated with the idea of me studying in Canada (didn't end up happening, obviously). But still, staying with it, my mum asked (without understanding the meaning of this term) if I did study in Toronto, this friend of my dad's would be willing to be my "legal guardian" over there. To which my dad snarkily responded, "There's nothing 'legal' or 'guardian-like' about [his friend]" (the friend is one of those types who can start a conversation with a stranger without hesitation and talk to them as if he knew them for 25 years, and is a heavy drinker, if of interest).

In the same spirit, there is nothing "genuine" or resembling "help" you will ever get on this platform. This ain't the place to look for it.

Not the fault of a nepo/privileged kid if your parents did not give you a base to work with. Ask them why instead of blaming nepotism/perks. Plus one thing I learnt in law school- almost everyone has connections and sources just that in cases of some it is very evident and some are good at hiding it.

Just know the basics of company law & contract law. All transaction documents are, at the end of the day, contractual considerations emanating from some company law basics. This rule stays relevant for TMT as well — remember, technology is a sector for corporate teams; not a practice area. So, don't dive deep into IT Act etc, but keep a few good articles saved on relevant copyright law and DPDPA basics too.

I have nothing against diversity. I just have something significant against the way it is understood in India.

And as for a "place" and the point you made about quality:

(a) You are absolutely right. But NLUs (with the obvious exception of NLSIU, and NLSIU only because of its brand name and now the additional factor of Sudhir) aren't good enough for what those kids who didn't get the privileges I did for no fault of their own should get. Anyone who has a problem with those types going to Jindal or the best universities of the world or who doesn't do enough to ensure that they get an opportunity to do so is a deeply flawed person in and of themselves (hint, I am talking about the Jindal admin, many of their students, many of the Indian students/parents of Indian students at some foreign universities of high repute and those people within the administrations of these institutions who talk about "social mobility" but who don't do enough about it).

(b) Regarding "place", I have no "place" to speak of in our society any longer. My only stake is from my past experience. Full disclosure: I have figured out a niche for myself overseas, I have lived outside for such an extended period of time and my circumstances because of this have become such that finding a "place" in India anymore would mean a complete reset for my career, a reset that I am confident I have the tools to manage properly, but which I (i) don't need to do; (ii) more importantly, don't want to do, as I am perfectly happy with my career abroad and don't see myself being within the territorial boundaries of India for anything more than a month at a time per year for the next 40 years or so; and (iii) equally importantly, soon will find very hard to do for regulatory reasons, as I will be eligible shortly to take up a non-Indian passport, an opportunity I will avail myself of the moment it arises.

Ew. This is not networking. You don’t seem to understand how humans work. The point of networking is to demonstrate your value not to beg for things from other people. So ask people questions about things they’re interested in. Make the effort to read what they’ve written about the law if they have or keep track of what matters they have been involved in. Complement their work but only if you sincerely mean it and be quite straight forward with people after.

It’s not sudden. Many people-even on the left already had problems with DYC and were vocal about it. Others who kept quiet during his tenure for career reasons no longer find the need to do so. I don’t think he has demonstrated integrity to the country no. I think he’s demonstrated legacy drive ? And careerism ? So that’s something ?

I have visited 30 countries: half on parent’s money, a few for conferences and moots where I got funding and the rest on my own money. It’s not that hard to self-fund these days. Low-cost airlines like Air Asia offer good deals to South East Asia and you also have bargain airfares to many countries. For accommodation, you can stay in hostels or AirBnB to save money. Even simpletons from villages go abroad these days.

Of course, trips to the US and Western Europe are costlier.

look at their exits of A0s after 6 to 8 months - all tier 1 firms. Grind your a** out over there, they do quality work in the capmarks practice. Your other bets in the Mumbai ECM tier 2s would be Bharucha and Crawford Bayley; post which you can easily secure tier 1 capmarks teams.

I remember watching Roman Saini's video a long back and he said something on the lines of; "luck plays a big role and no one denies it but luck shows random distribution. All of us have equal chance to be lucky. On the contrary, hard work is the only variable that you can control and actually create a significant difference. Hardwork allows you the possibility of more opportunities, and more opportunities create more probability of you being lucky." All of the people you have mentioned above were incredibly lucky and yet, all of them were extremely hard working as well. Give your self more opportunities to be lucky, and luck shall find you.

On a philosophical sense, the Bhagavad Gita answers it even better.

Chapter 2, Verse 47 - कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन | मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ||

The verse gives four instructions regarding the science of work: 1) Do your duty, but do not concern yourself with the results. 2) The fruits of your actions are not for your enjoyment. 3) Even while working, give up the pride of doership. 4) Do not be attached to inaction. We have the right to do our duty, but the results are not dependent only upon our efforts. A number of factors come into play in determining the results—our efforts, destiny (our past karmas), the will of God, the efforts of others, the cumulative karmas of the people involved, the place and situation (a matter of luck), etc. Now if we become anxious for results, we will experience anxiety whenever they are not according to our expectations. So Shree Krishna advises Arjun to give up concern for the results and instead focus solely on doing a good job. The fact is that when we are unconcerned about the results, we are able to focus entirely on our efforts, and the result is even better than before.

Chapter 5, Verse 20 - न प्रहृष्येत्प्रियं प्राप्य नोद्विजेत्प्राप्य चाप्रियम् | स्थिरबुद्धिरसम्मूढो ब्रह्मविद् ब्रह्मणि स्थित: ||

The section of this verse—neither rejoicing in pleasure, nor lamenting the unpleasant—is the highest ideal of the Vipassanā tradition of meditation in Buddhism. Have a firm understanding of divine knowledge and do not be hampered by delusion, neither rejoice in getting something pleasant nor grieve on experiencing the unpleasant (Basically Stoicism).

It's imperative to understand, nothing depends on luck, everything depends on work because even luck has to work. Focus on the variables, focus on the things that can actually make difference, alienate yourself from the wants, the jealousy, the comparison. True devotion to your work will bring results in a manner you can't even fathom. If you want to understand a more spiritual aspect of this process and actually get rid of this process; I would suggest you to read books on Advaitism, Buddhism and The Bhagavad Gita but if you don't intend to decipher those philosophies, all I have to say is follow Roman's words. It worked well for him, I really hope it does for you as well.

Ya legal ways like that mentioned in the letter of 2017 , directed to PM modi , and which recently got disclosed. In which is it was written that while the majority IAS take direct money like those of Jharkhand IAS earning 3 crore/day(top CEO of INDIA earns 1.5/day) and the one with 800crore (chardryan 3 had 600 crore budget) but even the one at the top are taking bribes for future positions for themselves or kids ,and get payed them handsomely . I know a ex-secretariat ,ex DGP and IAS hiding in eldeco Gomtingar Lucknow. First one has kids living abroad living in lavish bungalow, and occasionally visits to India and owns BMW as guft from his son , while the DGP hide his affair in it , and several other IAS who chose to live bcz of security mainly after retirement. It’s an expensive society, and just near to it thr a massive house recently bought and built worth 10 crore + in Vikrant khand with fountain and 5 star interior, but no name plate , it’s own by my friend’s jeeju , an IAS . You can even find a judge home on the way to his, in vishesh khand it’s also a big house with BMW GT in it . The problem with govt employees is “Politican ayega jayega but vo retirement tk churyega “ .

I agree. Luck has a lot to do with where we end up in life and we should acknowledge that and remain humble no matter the scale of our success.

However, we need to be open to opportunities, aware of them when they arise and competent enough to act on them - all of which requires focus and hard work which, no doubt, Ronaldo and Zuckerberg have exhibited as well. Hard work and focus don’t guarantee success given the importance of luck, but neither does luck alone.

Can anyone let me know as to what are the HR formalities that happen when you shift a job from one law firm to another. Like do they do any kind of background check of your experience..like per say call up the partner you worked with or ask last 6 months bank account statement ? How does the HR process go ?
