Hi, I just got an email saying I am being held back from being promoted to my 3rd year in a tier-1 NLU because of a 1st-year course I failed. I now have 6 months "freed up" before I can rejoin the uni. What can I do to compensate for this setback so that these months are not a waste?
Also, I am riddled with shame since an academic failure of this sort is a new experience for me, so I need to fill up my schedule for the next 6 months so I don't spiral. How will I ever fit in with my peers anymore, though? Is this year-back situation normal/ common? Surely this won't completely ruin my career/ internship prospects, will it?

Hi, i am 5th year student at T2 NLU. With decent internships and assessments lined up - i dont feel like telling this to anyone, as i think some people of my college who know people at the firm i am going to intern would tell some random shit about me, even though there is absolutely nothing that can affect my CV/Career - no disciplinary action nothing absolutely. But i fear that this may end up me losing the job.

Is this even possible or its just a random thought?

I am thinking of shifting to an In-house position but all the positions require prior experience or knowledge in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts. I have only ever worked in litigation. Can someone please give some relevant resources that I can go through to get a working knowledge enough for a job-interview.

But the point is ELP doesn’t give great annual increments. And the bonus is doled out in two tranches, 40% in April and 60% around October - a system that effectively makes it difficult for people to switch to a different firm because the amount of money locked-in till end of the year. I would rather have a system that at least offers decent increments and bonus in one go every year.

Jadavpur U (another state university) gets ₹250 crores from the state government, in addition to ₹1000 crores from the central government, while WBNUJS (a state university as well) gets a meagre ₹4.55 crores (less than the price of an upper-middle-class apartment). At this rate, WBNUJS will be better off if it is subsumed within Jadavpur U as its Law School.

The Vice Chancellor of Jindal Global Law School held a faculty meeting with the law school on March 2026, whose edited recordings had been recently leaked on Instagram and Twitter but have since been deleted and/or taken down. Toward the end of this meeting during Q&A, one of the senior-most faculty members in the humanities side had posed a direct question to the VC about whether JGLS is undergoing a "financial crisis" as faculty were being continuously being deprived of services contractually provided to them by the university, new faculty were not provided housing accommodation by the university, salary increments were low, free internet services were withdrawn, all university exams have been shifted to remote mode (no handwritten and physical on-campus exams) and how HR seemed to be manipulating payslips/tax related documents. In the recordings, the VC took offense to the question and said that the faculty were provided too many privileges that are being rightly withdrawn and that no other university abroad offers such privileges. He obviously did not address the concerns (the elephant in the room). Beating around the bush, he targeted the senior faculty, a minority, who raised her grievance in front of hundreds of other faculty members and said that in case any of you are unhappy with the university for any reason, you are free to leave. He said that "we" do not want unhappy faculty in this institution. In fact if a faculty wishes to resign today, he is happy to have HR waive the notice period for them and help them step out tomorrow. Is this how the leader of India's supposed number one law school should be treating his fellow faculty? Is there any space in the law school to voice one's grievances?

I also gave an interview today. I am from a tier three nlu with the single digit batch rank. The interview was mostly technical based on CV. I dont think it went extremely well.

Btw I had gotten the first internship after directly applying on the internship email on the website (Ik it is hard to believe), impressed the partner and team got a call back, call back went well and got recommended for an interview.

I am not sure if I have good chances. I answered all the basic law related questions well, some more technical, I could not.

I'm interning at a law firm, it specializes in Capital Markets and Transactions. From A0 to Associate Partners, everybody here relies on chatgpt. They tell the interns to use chatgpt. It is so scary if somebody wants to do a manual research because they ask us to "start with AI search and then back track". What are your opinions?

these law firms are totally insane; they give away internships through contacts like anything! And if they are to shortlist students then all of a sudden what matters the most to them are ranks; and then they also look for good tier-1s on the cv, which yet again is through connections (in a lot of cases).

like SAM is totally totally okay and happy with a Rank 40 joining internship via contacts, but if its a rank 16 w/o any connections/applying through the college you stand no chance, bcoz only top 10 deserve it right!

I joined Rise Legal as an intern, and it was a terrible experience for me. They pay freshers only ₹25,000 as associates while expecting them to work under immense pressure. The work environment was full of gossip within their small team, which made it even more unpleasant.

I had travelled from my city to South Delhi for this internship. Then, without any proper notice, they asked both me and my co-intern (who had been working there even before I joined) not to come to the office anymore. They also withheld our internship certificates despite all the work we had done.

What even... They don't do "GC". They do a lot of DCM work, and also play second fiddle to the ECM teams at SAM when it comes to BFSI clients. Also some fintech work - publicly a lot of fintech PR from their side, but that will be a fraction of work done, though fairly interesting. Also not a small team by any means - easily around 20+ members when I worked with them a little while back.

If you are looking for pure pure projects - then only TL (Neeraj and Nayantara), KCO - Neel and Divyansh and the smaller firms with Govt work would fit the bill.

Most others, including Avirup, Deepto, Arun etc are either more focused on M&A or Land or something to do with projects/ infra

Fewer Marwaris in law than others, as they are traditionally a business community and doing well there. Same applies to baniya caste people from other states. Among other communities and castes the number is heathy. Many Shudras and Yadavs now in law, post reservation for so many decades.

But Muslim representation is low relative to their numbers. Even there it is mostly the higher caste Muslims and not the pasmandas.

Have been seeing a lot of ads of Neemans shoes, which look formal but apparently feel comfortable like sneakers. Need to know if it is actually worth buying or not. Even many junior lawyers of today especially from an elite background in all aspects think of themselves as next Fali Nariman without even knowing about the basic stuff and just bluffing/boot licking is their survival mode.

If you have mental issues you need to speak with your firm for assistance - i.e., is if you cannot do something as basis, as going for therapy on your own dime. Go for therapy - it's cheap, especially on your A0 income. Go to psychiatrists if the therapist advises so - get meds if the psych says. Help yourself. If you can finish law school and get a Big Law job, you can take care of your mental health and if you can't ask for help - no one can guess what's happening with you.

NUJS got 4.55 crores this year in the WB budget. Interestingly, the Higher Education Dept has requested CAG to audit all state universities and include grant in aid colleges too. Ofc NUJS comes under the State Law Dept. Why isn't the SJA demanding a forensic audit for the 2011 to 2026 period?

I'm an A3. Recently switched from a T1 to another one. Worked my ass off across the board at both places. 9AM to 2AM on an average. Sometimes more.

I used to be a smart guy at college because I truly loved the law. I was interesting, I had a personality. I was excited about getting to work. Got 3 PPO offers along the way.

But slowly, all that has chipped away. I'm working on matters that sound truly incredible and I'm somehow still struggling to find the basic motivation. Fear and drive don't motivate me anymore because somewhere deep down, I know I want to quit really soon.

My practice area is so niche that less than 10 firms do it properly in India. I've been to one, rejected another, and am currently in one. The rest either don't have vacancies or are proceeded by terrible reputations. Plus, going to a T2 doesn't make much sense because it will likely just be as much work but with smaller names, more drudgery and even lesser money.

So what exactly do I do? Is anyone/has anyone been in the same boat? Is it wise to shift to in-house at my level? I have a feeling that the motivation will come back if I take a few months' break (or at least join a 9 to 5). Any options / help / advice is deeply appreciated.

At the outset I should clarify that I do not intend to use the LLM to transition as a lawyer into that country (Think UK and SQE exams), my research shows that path has gone dead for a very long time. Thankfully I find myself far more interested in policy and legal research (not exactly academia).

My current interest is in Data privacy, AI and governance (and adjacent research areas) therefore I'm thinking of pursuing an LLM from Europe, as a fourth year law student the earliest run rate to executing my plan is 5 years and I will need this much time to get my language skills up to wherever I go (currently thinking Brussels), as is I am aware that competition between Non EU and EU grads is a whole minefield so wherever I can give myself an advantage I will take it.

I can completely fund this pursuit abroad without incurring any debt of any kind for the whole duration (tuition +living expense) therefore I'm not extensively deterred from this plan based on financial feasibility.

Nonetheless, I am aware of the bloodbath that the european market is right now, I suppose I still want to do this because I find life here abysmal by any meaningful metric (short of the fact that I have my parents here). If I have to come back I will paid more for my foreign qualification so there is some win there.

I suppose I am looking for others who may be pursuing something similar their thoughts ?, others who may know better than me regarding my plans ? or in a general sense any guidance you would give to someone who came up to you with this plan.

Exactly, there is a general slowdown across teams. Have insider buddies at all teams and everyone is in the same boat. Main corp teams suffering, so all the work which stems from these projects like comp law matters are also lesser off-late. There's always a graph where things go up and down. (I mean every 3 years or so). Bad times these days but stuff will pick up guys. For now please go join the jantar mantar protest my fellow humans.❤️
