Practice area matters.

If you are working on commercial contracts - you can go to a Gen Corp/TMT Team. Have to learn more. Still a good option.

If you are in employment you can join a law firm employment team.

Quality matter - Are you from a well known IT company with an elite legal team - Wipro, Tech Mahindra etc

I graduated from a T1 NLU, with a top 2 rank. Have been working in a T1 firm thereafter- I don’t have any publications, but have done prestigious international moots and ADR (though I didn’t do particularly well in them). Will the lack of publications/editorship hurt my chances at Oxbridge?

What even is "12 internships"? Madness, no employer can take that seriously. Internships are for deeper understanding of the profession/practice area. Not to keep floating between them like a checklist. Even if you've done all these internships, please just highlight 2-3 (and 1-2 within them that are relevant to the role you're applying to).

Hi i just graduated from Non-NLU, i had interned under good counsels in delhi. Still confused where to join for criminal trail practice, i had heard good things about Mr. Prabhav Ralli, Mr. Chirag Madan, Adv. Siddharth Satija & Adv. Sowjhanya Shankaran.

Can anyone recommend or advise me where to join from them or apart from them? It would be very helpful.

Yes, I do regret every single day, the following,-

1. Having the most loving wife and family who support me

2. Earning Crores a year

3. Owning immovable property in Bombay

4. Being the fittest I have ever been in my life and having the time to work out, run, play golf etc.

5. The enjoyment and satisfaction I get from the work that I do.

I am far from the exception. There are many people like me.

I am a final year student (BO’26) from idk what tier private law school. I have a SAM internship coming up in December. I want to know that how much chance I have for a PPO, considering they give at least one call back before offering a PPO. In a scenario where I perform extremely well and they give a call back and there also I perform extremely well.

NLUs have too big of an ego to come under any central university, since they know that if they do that they would be just another school or department. The VC post immediately becomes a Dean. That's a straight demotion. The TLC gang would not like that, since now you'd have to please the central government. The state government is easier to impress. That's why it will never happen. The same reason NLUs will never be nationalised. Do you think it's tough to get nationalised if the whole consortium writes a letter to the Prez, PM and Parliament ? With 25 NLUs, they wield enough power to demand nationalisation. But that means losing their privilege under state governments to the centre. Being a central university means you'll be less in priority as compared to IITS, IIMS and AIIMs. That's why you see universities like RRU and NFSU being promoted more than NLUs. Since it's about pushing only RW leaning law universities. The only time NLUs could get nationalised was during UPA. Now, a liberal NLU will definitely not be centralised.

As he was one of the most vociferous critic of the government and SG, the briefs had reduced substantially, including from his home state, Gujarat.

Also, considering the present state of SC judges, he was also not getting relief from the bench.

So he chose the most sensible and dignified way out which is retirement.

Considering his political leaning, it's quite possible that he'll contest elections in Gujarat with any of the opposition parties.

Good initiative, but some of the parameters appear to be questionable. Such as credentials of the author playing such a big role. Whenever a judge writes in a journal, that's being treated as a big deal deserving extra points. However, most judges in India write so badly that good blind peer reviewed journals don't even accept their papers. Only nepotism works. Same goes for faculty. We all know what's the condition of most of the faculty across the Indian law universities. Many NLU undergrad students write and research better than many of such faculties. However, at least the authors have tried to take an initiative, this should get the ball rolling and begin the discussions.

The ranking has the following loopholes:

1. “5 points, a faculty-authored piece earns 4, a researcher earns 3, a postgraduate student earns 2, and an undergraduate student-authored piece earns 1 point.”

Judges in India get their assistants to write articles and they are generally of poor quality. The NLSIU page itself refers to “judicial ghostwriting”. Then why do this? It artificially inflated the ranking of NLSIU journals. Also, what about practitioner pieces? Zero points?

Bruh…. Please include them. They will knock off many in the top 20. Also IJIL and IJLT.

After the 3 year mandatory practice judgement for judiciary eligibility, these lower NLUs (RMLNLU, CNLU, NLU Aurangabad, NLU sonipat etc) are just a waste of money. Their entire crowd is focused on judiciary and now they'll have to get a job but they aren't prepared and their college is shit

I have taken a job as a legal counsel at a leading IT Solutions Company. However, I want to shift to a law firm (Tier 1/2/3) preferably in Gen Corp Team. What are the chances of the same? Some say even it is very tough, some say even if you get, you might have to take a pay cut and start from A0. Any insight on this will be helpful.

Thank you so much. Though if i have to say being in a tier 1 NLU also helps. I don't have that privelege. Also no instead of being a Partner in a firm my goal is to gain experience in law firms and become an arbitrator finally. Though it's not exactly stable as parties choose arbitrators.

Pay is peanuts, work stretches to 2-3am on the worst days, 8-9pm on most. Early starts (7:30-8) too if there’s a client call. Sure, exposure to global laws here is solid across sectors, but no firm is worth trading away your health and dignity. Do your time if you must, but know when to walk.

Again, T1 law firms may have a slightly worse culture, but they at least pay well relatively.

A few years back, a professor (literal professor) at HNLU proposed this idea in front of the administration, this exact idea. Guess what? the VC not only rejected the idea but also snatched the administrative position that was given to this professor by the whole committee. I am sure same situations will also be underlying in different NLUs as well.

You've said it yourself, your overseas degree helped you selection. Not everyone gets that opportunity. So they have to stick to an LLM in India, which is not valuable compared to a one year in practical whether in litigation or even tier 3 firms. So, the above commenter is correct. The only sure-shot route is acadmia.

You could have done that even if you didn't do an LLM. Plenty of people do it. Work experience will always triumph Degrees. Also, the fact that you did an LLM "abroad" is the key factor, not everyone has the financial capacity to study abroad. So the Indian LLMs have no value other than academic necessity. If they're scrapped like MPhil or like other degrees now, if they allow you to pursue a PhD directly after a UG, many would opt that. Moreover, LLM in specialised areas are a different thing. If you do an LLM in taxation , definitely it would help you secure a job. But an LLM in consti, criminal, HR, IL will only help your academic or research career. You can get a good job with one year of experience over one year in a normal INDIAN LLM degree.

Cold messaging. Reach out to people on LinkedIn. Ask if they have vacancies in their team and request a referral. You can search for vacancies on LinkedIn and then reach out to people working in that company's legal team. You can also reach out to legal recruiters on LinkedIn. Have a well drafted cv and make sure you send a good introductory message.

Not really. Almost all Jindal grads whom I've had to work with lacked basic conceptual knowledge or understanding and everyone without an exception were supremely arrogant and entitled and would keep throwing their family connections around as if it gives them the right to be incompetent.

The NLU brand has very little purchase in elite India. It’s good for people who are from genuinely middle class backgrounds to move up one level in life. To really make it with a law degree, you need to be an exceptional litigator (which comes relatively later in life) or manage to move to a different field (not very easy in India).

Who told you that the law department has any role to play in this report? Matlab kuchh bhi! NFSU law school is less than average now, hardly any halfway decent faculty, no good publications to their credit and they can't even attract any marquee names. Even the director doesn't have any good reputation. Trying to tag along their forensic science work is like calling NALSAR's MBA as great as IIMs or ISB. You have no idea about legal education at all. Quit embarassing yourself.

I’m a 2025 grad from a Tier-1 NLU. Over the years, I’ve done around 12 internships including a long-term one (1 year) and even stints at foreign law firms. I’ve sent out 100+ applications since graduation, but haven’t received any positive responses. The only replies I get are from chambers offering less than ₹30k/month.

It’s getting frustrating and demotivating at this point. Could someone please suggest where and how to apply be it firms, chambers, in-house, or even alternate options? I’d really appreciate honest guidance or leads.
