A few years back, a professor (literal professor) at HNLU proposed this idea in front of the administration, this exact idea. Guess what? the VC not only rejected the idea but also snatched the administrative position that was given to this professor by the whole committee. I am sure same situations will also be underlying in different NLUs as well.

NLUs have too big of an ego to come under any central university, since they know that if they do that they would be just another school or department. The VC post immediately becomes a Dean. That's a straight demotion. The TLC gang would not like that, since now you'd have to please the central government. The state government is easier to impress. That's why it will never happen. The same reason NLUs will never be nationalised. Do you think it's tough to get nationalised if the whole consortium writes a letter to the Prez, PM and Parliament ? With 25 NLUs, they wield enough power to demand nationalisation. But that means losing their privilege under state governments to the centre. Being a central university means you'll be less in priority as compared to IITS, IIMS and AIIMs. That's why you see universities like RRU and NFSU being promoted more than NLUs. Since it's about pushing only RW leaning law universities. The only time NLUs could get nationalised was during UPA. Now, a liberal NLU will definitely not be centralised.

If I were a university leader from one of the IITs or IIMs, this sort of thing would snatch away a lot of my sleep. Many of the combinations you mentioned are distinctly unappealing:

- NUJS with IIM C or IIT KGP: Thanks, but no thanks. NUJS has enough nonsense of its own. A bonfire of academic standards has destroyed any semblance of its former glory. TMC has made enough of a mess with it.

- NLUO with IIT Bhubaneshwar: Heard NLUO VC is behaving in a very stupid way, pretending to implement "academic rigor" when there is actually nothing of the sort at that uni.

- RML (and NLU Prayagraj) with IIM Lucknow or IIT Kanpur: Both NLUs mentioned are very average universities. If I were IIT Kanpur, I wouldn’t want the baggage of these average-to-borderline-between-average-and-poor brand names hooked to me.

- TNNLU with IIT Madras: Same as above.

- MNLU (all three campuses) with IIT Bombay: Same point as the proposal re RML.

- NLU Sonipat with IIM Rohtak: Certainly not! Nobody has ever heard of “NLU Sonipat”, well I haven’t. Risk is too great.

- HPNLU with IIT Mandi: HPNLU isn’t even an attractive university for the state it is in, no. No. Ain’t happening.
