Hi Boss, that is a normal problem to face. Do not stress about it. I am from Trichy but had Hindi as a second language. As long as you have the basic words / sentence structure, I strongly recommend you just start speaking to people in Hindi - it really helped me get better.

I can't think of a way to keep that sheet updated in the long-term (unless people start adding dates next to compensations), so maybe we can just use this thread to share recent compensations?

You need <100 rank for NLSIU, while you get CNLU at around 1k or more (I am not sure), while the number of candidates appearing for the exam remains the same. If you still think that the level of screening or the quality of students is the same, then I would not be able to convince you further, sorry!

Don't decide to go in banking and finance right now you will end up doing nothing. Instead focus on ur subjects and then intern at different places and then decide which career path is best suitable for u

I've been at it for months, have a decent CV and cover letter, and always try to add something that shows I keep up with their work. Hi, I'm a delusional first year NLU student, currently at home in Delhi for a week or so; I had this idea in my mind to go to a club in this free time where I can meet as many partners and associates from SAM/CAM/Khaitan etc. To my very beloved seniors in Delhi who're working in these firms (or any other ones), I'd really appreciate if you could recommend me some clubs where I could potentially network with a good number of people from the industry - it's coming from a place of desperation to make and potentially maintain 'connections' w these people. Clubbing & having that kind of fun is my cup of tea so hopefully would meet like-minded individuals there. Please lmk which clubs should I go to, and what's the best day and time to go so as to maximise the possibility to meet the sample size lol.

In my experience, this is untrue. The team is quite flexible, a lot more than you would generally see in law firms. The culture is welcoming, unless you want to be ‘aloof’ - which is then your kind and considered choice.

On timings of 10:30 to 10, I would say, it can only come as a thought to someone who has to “show” respect.

I have heard 2-3 controversial stories(like one girl was harrassed inside the campus ) about this university but they have good alumni network also they have established a placement cell in their university which has actively signed mou with aai for providing internships moreover professors background is also good.

70% at T1 kind of an exacerbated lie is just a misuse of anonymity and throwing mud at NLS students' credibility.

Nalsar had 95 students opting for RCC in 25' out of which 42 got placed in the top 5 law firms(CAM SAM TRILEGAL KCO AZB)

And 3 got placed at LinkLaters and 1 at A&O Shearman

So that's like 49%

Except NLU Delhi others are just a waste of money. SAU has no notable names for its LLM and a nepotistic PhD program, they had to beg Ministry of External affairs to save them. DU is almost similar to any other central university just that they're in Delhi, otherwise you have to hustle on your own, no help in placements or even internships. NFSU is already in the dumps, except the main Gandhinagar campus, none of the other NFSU campus are great. They're only functional as long as the current dispensation is alive. ILI is only for higher studies, also it depends on the VC, last VC pushed for international law, this VC is pushing for IPR. In the end there's nothing great except for the SC being in Delhi.

Also there's no ecosystem, none of these are connected. Plus the one that is actually worth it is only available for PhD and that's JNU.

Correct - its a relatively new firm in Pune. AS - the MP seems to have had a fallout with LegaLogic. He had joined LegaLogic with a team - and left within about a year or so. Has a small office close to ILS college. The online posts of the firm see interesting - ▮▮▮] They seem to also engage associate lawyers on a per matter basis (like an external associate) ▮▮▮. Don't think they have ▮▮▮

The firm markets itself as 'full service' - but does not really have much service lines - and is heavily dependant on the experience of the MP. Dabbles in a bit of litigation - but primarily looks into corporate. Not sure how big a market Pune is for TMT and sports law related work. Has close ties to MCCIA in view of MP's father being in a very senior position. So would (should?) open a lot of doors.

I would say all top 6-7 NLUs give you a good alumni base but NLS definitely takes the cake by virtue of being the oldest. Apart from that, I think NLIU, NUJS, and NLUJ seniors are quite active in lit.

As a partner, I want to share something I try to live by. As you grow in your career, you will come across behavior (and also often endure), whether directed at you or at others, that you will not agree with. Most of the times, because of the situation, you will not be able to change it or even speak up against it.

In those moments, it is important not to forget how the behavior made you feel.

As you move forward and your role and influence grow, make a conscious effort not to repeat the same behavior. Try to adopt a change which addresses the behavior that bothered you. Every change can make a real difference to real people, even if it's not a large number of people.

Becoming senior should not be about carrying forward the frustrations of your early years and then taking revenge on unsuspecting people to placate the younger self. It should be an opportunity to make things a little easier for others, even though you will definitely not directly benefit from the change in behavior or culture.

Over time, you will learn, grow, and improve. The way you treat people should grow with you.

I was exactly like you plus I'm from Haryana (so even my Hindi had a touch).

I did a couple of things from age 18-25 years:1. Memorize lyrics and sing along with Bryan Adams or other slower and regular English singers while reading the song lyrics off the cassette insert (yes, I'm old) - this helped the most along with micro exposures explained below.

2. Go to McDonalds and other similar chains and place orders in English to get micro exposures.

3. Seeing things and then describing it to myself mentally in English. Basically, talking to myself mentally in English.

4. Wishing strangers in public settings, Hello How are you! Good morning etc. - again micro exposures.

5. Talking to my sibling and close friends in (broken) English - another micro exposure.

6. Reading random articles on Wikipedia and opening the dictionary for each new word I'd encounter and then memorizing the usage and spelling.

7. Reading English newspapers aloud.

8. Typing randomly in Microsoft Word and learning from the corrections (grammar) feature.

9. Writing randomly on paper to become better at writing (not just speaking).

10. Doing the above repeatedly for a few years to become passable at it.

On troubling ex parte orders for removal of online content in defamation cases

The Delhi High Court's ex parte orders directing removal of online content in a series of defamation cases including the defamation case filed by Hardeep Puri 's daughter in connection with Epstein related allegations, and the case of the lady who accused a BJP leader of complicity in the murder of Ankita Bhandari etc, raise troubling concerns. The law cannot be that the Court will direct removal of alleged defamatory content ex parte on the first hearing itself without hearing the Defendants or their defence and without recording a finding that the allegations are false. The law is that truth is a defence to a suit for defamation. Once the content is removed, the Suit might as well be decreed. The loss to the defendant and the defendant's right to freedom of speech already stands taken away once an exparte removal of content order is passed.

What am I missing here.

On false dichotomies and the meaning of "Industry"

The word Industry comes from a Latin word that means working diligently at a task. From the Service Law point of view where the protection of workers or human labour is a moral and legal value, the word Industry means and should mean any enterprise whether for profit or not, whether State run or not, and where people work. A place or enterprise where people work for pay. That is an Industry. In order to apply certain laws, a minimum number of people working in a place or at an enterprise might be set as a qualifying factor. Sovereign functions like service in the Army will be exceptions. The word Industry must be interpreted in the light of the objective and purpose of the Statute or Policy in which it occurs. For Service Law Statutes, protection of workers and labour is a paramount objective and purpose. Therefore, the meaning of Industry must be interpreted expansively to provide the maximum protection to workers and labour. Protection of workers and labour is also a social welfare function of the State. No State can prosper by allowing exploitation of its people.

The Attorney General R Venkataramani is setting up a false colonial/ non colonial interpretation dichotomy. How does wanting to protect our workers and labour from exploitation become colonial?

The LI model of usage would completely have to change. It would have to become a social media-style platform, with requirement of credentials etc to use. They are not using AI to get their results. They are using it for efficiencies. Please don't make up strawman arguments that are possible to prove false within half a second. They would never recruit, BTW, an associate who can't formulate their own thoughts on paper. To be fairly honest, I'm not entirely sure about how it works in other cities, but in Mumbai usually most of the firms (T-1 & others) do have Paralegals and/or Long Term Interns.

You can secure these positions in several ways (not exhaustive):

(i) Through College placement - A few select Mumbai colleges (mostly GLC/NMIMS) regularly release vacancies for Paralegals from T-1 and other firms wherein their students simply have to apply and are shortlisted/interviewed on the basis of their CV and application.

(ii) Direct Application - This would involve you directly applying through the firm's website for the aforementioned positions and the HR gets in contact with you if they shortlist your CV/application.

(iii) Existing interns upgraded/extended - Quite often students already interning at these firms are offered Paralegal positions or extensions for long terms internships on the basis of their ability, team requirements and availability.

(iv) Cold-mailing - Sometimes cold-mailing partners may work but this is highly dependent on the quality of your approach and the particular partner you mail, taking into consideration their receptiveness to such an approach.

Considering that you're already a graduate, I would suggest to start reaching out to seniors/batchmates already working in these firms to get an idea of how you should apply, which particular team to apply to and which respective partner to reach out to.

Some people also have success with directly messaging partners on LinkedIn.

Additionally, you should employ points (ii) & (iv) mentioned above as well.

Did the letter which came with your law school first semester exam results sheet advise you to drop out of law school and pursue something else? Asking because I sincerely hope it did - and if it was a top five NLU, it should have done. It is not the LI moderator who is "lazy" or a "troll", it's you.
