As a law student aspiring to work at a top law firm, I understand that partnership is considered the most coveted milestone in a corporate lawyer’s career. Which firms are truly merit-based in their promotion to partnership, and why is partnership at Trilegal often regarded so highly?

I’ve heard that many people transition to Tier 1 law firms after gaining substantial experience at T&S Law in Capital Markets. I have recently received a job offer from T&S Law, and I’m quite excited about the opportunity.

However, the HR team has not yet shared details regarding the salary package and has deferred the discussion to Monday (23.03.2026). In the meantime, I wanted to reach out to understand the general salary expectations and work culture at the firm.

It would be really helpful if someone could share their insights.

Why would you leave SRCC for a profession that would eventually narrow your scope and the range of opportunities? More than the age aspect, I pity the fact that you chose to willingly put yourself to this instead of going for a better, well rounded career avenue. People really need to stop romanticising NLUs and law- it's an oversaturated profession with poor ROI- both money wise and emotionally and professionally.

I am in my 3rd year right now and I just got an internship at Luthra and Luthra at New Delhi office via cold mailing the partners (I got reply within 4 hours of mailing them, one of them replied and confirmed). I wanted to ask about what to expect and how to make most out of this opportunity.

P.S. also if someone can tell me if I can expect any stipend.

It is end of the year. Bonus pay out time. Most lalas are probably squirming because they have to pay out while their HR minions are frantically trying to find one reason or the other to gnaw at legitimately earned bonuses of poor associates and partners. Meanwhile the good for nothing suckups are super busy making last ditch attempts at sucking up to get their due for what they do best...sucking up.

Lol lawyers aren't the only one with hectic working schedules.Investment Bankers, doctors, consultants etc have equally bad work life balance.

My non-lawyer boyfriend always understands my hectic working schedule and I have often spent weekends working while still hanging out with him. Being a homebody certainly helps lol.

Why would you want a date a lawyer honestly? I think we are boring people. There are many people with interesting professions who will help you expand your world view and allow you to have different perspectives on things. I would say it is even important for lawyers to surround themselves with various people and not be trapped in echo chambers.

Who’s making such a big deal about the Trilegal partnership announcements? Honestly, it’s pretty much the same story every year- firms promoting partners in April like clockwork.

That said, I am curious- does anyone actually know what their promotion process looks like? Is it any different from how other Tier-1 law firms in India handle it, or is it just the usual playbook with a bit of added hype?

So this might be controversial, but what is the huge fuss with the Trans Bill? I think it is reasonable for the State to be able to determine who is the ultimate beneficiary of trans welfare policies? We’ve already seen what happens when reservation is based on intrinsic characteristics like caste or religion. What makes the trans issue more complicated is that self-determination is a huge loophole since at least for caste and religion you have a community backing you, documents and familiar origins attesting to your origin a certain way. If tomorrow, an upper class guy decides he’s trans and there’s no checks to ensure he doesn’t get benefits from welfare and reservations meant for actual trans people, it’ll be the same thing as reservation again: policies meant for the vulnerable going to those who aren’t vulnerable, who are privileged and who don’t need those benefits. It’s not about left or right, but simple common sense. A lot of trans people, especially those in wealthier areas or those from privileged backgrounds, never really undergo gender affirming surgeries and giving them even more privileges under the garb of trans rights seems stupid, especially considering rural trans and intersex individuals who cannot opt-out of the discrimination. It’s kind of like being gay, like I don’t see how a gender which has had historic privilege is suddenly to be treated as vulnerable simply because they sleep with each other. It doesn’t make the inherent economic and social privilege men have go away, it just puts on a garb of vulnerability on them and ignores that they do not really face issues since no one can figure out their sexuality prima facie, unlike trans people who do suffer immensely based on how they are seen by others. Self-determination may be a right, but making it the pathway to claim benefits is just a losing battle against actual trans empowerment. Am I wrong? Is there something else I’m missing?

That is exactly why your job must be your priority. If you had generational wealth to depend on, it may not be extremely dire and important. Depending on marriage, especially as a woman, for sustenance is like two of your feet on two canoes, they may drift apart and youre done for

No, shamelessly coldmail. As far as I know, no T1 firm has an organisation-wide block on coldmails as I've gotten responses from partners at every firm. Even if the partner is annoyed with how many mails they receive asking for internships, keep sending them until they improve their HR processes.

dating other lawyers is simultaneously the best and the worst experience. the best because they know exactly where you're coming from and the worst because lawyers, especially t1 lawyers, aren't the best people to be around. egos, competition, among other things make things so so difficult. if you're at a t1 firm, you're most likely not exposed to anyone other than other lawyers. if you're able to find a good non-lawyer partner for yourself, nothing like it.

NFSU is enriching India's education landscape. Its multi-campus approach is the way to go, but NLUs cannot do this as their footprint is limited to the respective states. Moreover, even within their states, NLUs receive a very step-motherly treatment (without getting into the reasons). The reality is that NLUs have topped out.

If we take a step back, no NLU gives us a positive feeling about its future, in terms of growth, impact, or stature. They'll continue to do more of the same, i.e., teach UG programmes and try to get placements for their students. Immediate gratification. That's all. There is no institutional progress to look forward to. Being state universities severely limits what NLUs can and cannot do. Let's not pretend otherwise.

In contrast, NFSU is growing in leaps and bounds. The stakeholders and the entire ecosystem are curious to know what it is doing, its direction of progress, and current and future milestones and achievements. They have been able to elevate forensic science as a pivot in the legal domain in India. That is a huge contribution. One can understand that in some of the areas/subjects they work on, it is difficult to even find experts and faculty. Being a national university makes a massive difference. I am in awe of what they have achieved so far in a short period of 5 years, and what they will achieve in the next 5 - 10 years.

Most UG students take a very short-term view. They classify universities solely on placements. It is like comparing T20 and Test Matches. NFSU is preparing for and playing a test match (real cricket). The market for 'technocrat lawyers" (that NFSU produces) is still maturing in India. This shows how NFSU is actually leading the way and is ahead of the curve. The industry will catch up, and when it does, see the impact.

I’m gonna be brutal here. The average corp lawyer in India is the epitome of Jonah Hill’s character Donnie in the Wolf of Wall Street.

The moment guys graduate from a good law school and join a top law firm, they think they are god and have a sense of toxic entitlement that they should only date the top tier of attractive women. This starts from college itself. The nerdiest guys start behaving arrogantly after getting PPOs and lay claim to first and second years (who don’t know any better).

They think that if they drive a good car, wear a good watch and take their date to the most expensive restaurants, women will fall over them.

They were silent regarding Venezuela too. And didn’t say anything about Pakistan bombing the Children’s Hospital in Afghanistan. In fact, even their Palestine activism has gone quiet.

So I guess either their Palestine activism was just a fad, or they have gone quiet following the US Embassy’s stringent student visa policy and the denial of a visa to an Indian law grad for his Columbia LLM, based on his tweets criticising Trump and Modi.

That’s too much of forensic science. They don’t have jobs for students graduating from main campus. No future of so many forensic graduates. Govt jobs in CFSL/ state FSL open to all science graduates. No single job created by Govt or even private sector for ONLY forensic science graduates. Promotion of so many campuses and putting so much of public money on one such university is purely waste of resources.

That comparisons pretty clear man, find what the criterias are, and evaluate them to your preferences. What has anybody else's opinion gotta do with it like I could get 2-3 T1 NLU batches TO gaslight you into believing that MPDNLU is better than like NLU-D in every aspect would you just resort to believing us?

Would it matter if they blacklist you, given you don't have an internship with them either ways?

Partners don't really care. Most of them send your mail to spam or block. Some just forward it to HR. Few actually read your mail and CV and contemplate recommending you. A 40 year old professional has a lot more to focus on than to get a 20 y/o desperate kid blacklisted. That being said, calling them up seems too far fetched and can piss them off- don't do that.

As someone who is hunting corporate internships in T1s, I've been constantly given the advice to cold email, follow up, then call. But some others say that cold emailing gets you blacklisted. And, I know others who have called up partners and gotten internships just by being shameless (for the lack of a better word). In your experience, which is the best way? What firms actually blacklist you for this? (P.S. I'm talking about publicly available emails/contacts)

I'm not very experienced but work in securities regulatory at a t1, from what I have heard from my seniors, it has no value at t1's but will hold value at boutiques or counsels if u wish to work in litigation, corporate the value is present for in house gigs though, so if you are desperate for a job or love securities and cant land a gig, would recommend but please speak to others to confirm this is all hearsay.

Dating can be extremely intimidating as lawyers, you’re always working, barely any time and even when you do date other non- lawyers they never understand how it is or that you can’t always be available and that work takes priority, how are other lawyers dating? Is there any way to exclusively date a lawyer?

The only really good book on drafting I know of is 'Modern Legal Drafting'. Are there any good books on drafting, regarding pleadings or otherwise, in the Indian context which are not just bundles of templates and actually give useful practical advice by drawing on the author's experiences as well as statutes and case law? NFSU is a public university, and as taxpayers, we should be happy to see this progress. Let us not forget that it is the world's first and only university dedicated solely to forensic sciences and allied disciplines. Its impact is much more than just placements. Its growth in stature is impressive, given that it's been in existence for just 5 years.

Saffron party isn't serious abt winning here. Sure, it is entirely possible that as in 2011, the meek will vote for change en masse. But that doesn't mean that saffron party will put up laughable candidates. Just look at the ones being put up for Jadavpur, Tollygunj, Ballygunj, Bidhannagar and so many other places. The walkover is absolutely crystal. The GOP and Reds actually have a dearth of candidates. But saffron?

Unlike chatterati I am agnostic about the RG Kar victim's mother potentially getting saffron ticket for her home constituency. But the absolute laziness of saffron is so transparent. They do some of the most cutting edge work in the industry. They mostly cater to foreign clients so there is hourly dollar billing. This automatically means their lawyers are some of the highest paid right now.

Its a dream firm for every lawyer. There is a reason Rajesh Begur is known as the 'Godfather of Corporate Law' in industry circles.
