We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.

Hindi / Urdu has a word for it... "Majboori" until you stabilise or find something better or worse when your self respect cannot take the humiliation any longer.
Tru for most places BTW
Honest suggestions would be appreciated :)
Bengaluru has the second-best IIM but the IIT in Karnataka (Dharwad or whatever) is crap.
NLUD is on the backfoot as there is no IIM in Delhi. IITD is very good though.
Kolkata has the third-best IIM and IIT KGP is decent, so NUJS can benefit, but the brand value of all three are currently falling.
A related question: will the 2024 election results impact the market? Will the market (esp Adani shares) crash if Modi loses or is forced into a shaky coalition? Or if INDIA pulls off an upset victory? Should I hold off from investing until June 2024?
While one or two provision of some labour codes have been notified to be effective, they mainly relate to registration of unorganized/ gig workers to be able to claim benefits from the codes. Nothing on the regulation bit is effective yet.
Also, how should one approach these seniors for a position?
Good move and long overdue. NLUs must sign MoUs with the IITs and NLUs in their states. Next aim for NUJS should be an MoU with IIMC. Eventual goal should be joint degrees with both and a system where NUJS grads can be pushed into MBA courses at IIMC and VGSOM at IITKGP.
I dont chaff my own wheat- but I dont whine about the relatively easy work I do more than people who do work on farms or oil rigs.
Yall get paid more than 90% of the country makes and to sit in an ac room and do due diligence. and you have the audacity to cry about it? Don't you have any self-awareness? Why do you think influencers on your screen are more real than thousands of poor starving people in the country? What a privileged and cruel thing to do this stuff is. Aren't you supposed to be the generation that cares about social justice? Why are you this blind to how good you have it? I think it is actually soul destroying this kind of thinking. Getting out of law school- you make more than most of your professors in your law school- Do you not appreciate what a gift that is given how much of a scam law school is nowadays?
Or is your alleged leftism only existing till the point it makes you an oppressed class and no further?
Please spare me about all this complex legal work yall are doing. Most jobbing corp lawyers can't answer basic contract law questions in an interview.
Life is not about you having more or better or whatever else. It is not about you not envying models. It is not about you laying in the park in the middle of the day soaking up sunlight. You think all of that will make you happy- it just won't. It will never be enough if all you want to do is consume. Life is about contributing- what are you doing to be of service to others, be they your family, your friends, your firm, your clients, your profession, your community, or your country? What tangible goods have you produced? That's what actually fills the void in your soul. Why has no one told you this yet? Why have you lived such a poorly examined life? Cry for help, survival- this from folks who make six figures minimum and find most of their food on swiggy/zomato, rent posh apartments in the best places in the city and spend their weekends getting drunk. Give me a break with this nonsense. It is honestly insulting. Do you even know how much a packet of milk costs? I'm betting money you dont even know because you buy it without thinking whether you can afford it. And yet there is no end to the hyperbole.
This website constantly encourages this stuff as well. They need to freaking self-reflect if they think any of this is worthwhile discourse. Do you think you're being a force for good in the world allowing this kind of indulgence? The world is literally going to hell in a handbaskets and people on here cannot do anything else other than whine about how bad they have it because they have to work. At their jobs- which most of the country cannot dream of.
The next generation will be ashamed of you. You will be ashamed of the stuff you believe in ten years. Be better.
Too many cooks, they say, spoil the broth, and it seems it is appropriate in this context.
Hope that explains it and is acceptable :)

It was disheartening coming across the Mails of Student Council members.
Personal opinion - I've worked at better places and TTA is unnecessarily hyped.
or in general Investment banking firms like JP Morgan?
He was told that the work culture was intense? Why does every work culture need to be laid back? Ambition is not an evil thing and some people do want to work harder and be better than others- those people end up doing good things for the world. Maybe the firm life is not for you- but on the face of it that doesnt make the culture toxic. That rubberband analogy is essentially the senior telling the kid- hey, buck up, dont let the pressure get to you- figure out how you can be better everyday, resilience is an important quality. Why is that a bad thing? thats one of those things you learn about life generally no?
"We'll treat you the way we were treated"- they clearly dont think they were abused- they think it contributes to a productive work culture that they personally find rewarding. If theyre sitting on their fat asses and making you work more than them- thats something - but thats not even alleged. In fact its essentially telling the employe "we arent targetting you specifically- youre not some scapegoat, everyone goes through this- toughen up". He was asked to send in work on time? Shock Horror. He was threatened with a firing if he missed an important deliverable? Yeah, youre in a service profession. If you cant be of service to your clients what do you expect?
Maybe they could have been more considerate if the guys mom was in the hospital- but also why are you leaving things till the very last minute so you taking a day off disrupts the entire organisation? Doesnt everyone try to stay a day or two ahead on their work just to account for this stuff? I had an emergency first year when I was working, couldnt go into work for a few days- my boss was rightly annoyed at what seemed like flaky behavior for him. I had a conversation, kept his expectations in check and was honest with him about what happened. When he saw a few months later that that was not me being lazy or lying- and that it was genuinely a one off thing- he softened and continued to mentor me and help with my career. My bet is that this is not the first time this guy has flaked on something and then had an excuse.
Honestly law firm work isnt exactly brain surgery- my friends are partners and they tell me that as associates they mostly did the same things day after day except for an interesting deal here and there. just stay on top of your work and dont leave things till last minute and communicate your needs.
What is the alleged humiliation? Just telling him his work is not good enough and he is not meeting standards? That CANNOT be humiliation. You cannot go into a work place and expect everyone to fall in love with you and not evaluate your work fairly. Its part of working to have your supervisors tell you how youre doing- take some feedback. No one is perfect, and early career folks have a lot to learn- set aside your ego.
He said hes demotivated because of the criticism? I mean sorry, but thats on you mate. Be an adult, understand criticism is part of any job, find out how you can do better and execute. You cannot put other people and their approval in charge of your professional success. No one will sing your praises hoping you do better. When youre not honest with your juniors about their flaws they dont think that theres anything they need to fix.
To write a company wide email instead of addressing the stressful stuff with your superiors in a collegial manner? And then to leak it to the internet? This guy has shown remarkable immaturity. I wouldnt hire him again unless he was very remorseful and took some responsibility for his part in all this.
I think many people are projecting their negative experiences and assuming a bunch of bad stuff happened that the complaint doesnt even allege. These all seem pretty mild allegations and I wouldnt quit over any of this. Id try and figure out what I should do better or if this is a good fit for me.
I dont think genz is more sensitive to injustice. How many of them are worried about labour conditions for people that arent them? I think genz is sensitive to criticism. The two arent the same thing at all. most of this stuff isnt toxic or abusive- and that concept creep does real harm to people who suffer workplace discrimination and abuse on the basis of immutable characteristics. If youre being paid tons of money to do work- you better know that the people paying you will expect your work to be good.

In that sense, Indian Tier-1 is more akin to US BigLaw, larger (relative) mandates, bigger paydays, more toxic, more burnout.
Start with the principal legislation and then follow on with the few relevant rules and regulations. Learn to dissect and interpret the law. Then for clarity and understanding, you can see some courses for these laws.
NUJS used to have a diploma course on corp laws which was very helpful. Not sure if they still have it.
I won’t take names, but there are tons of people with LLMs from supposedly less prestigious colleges doing far better than Oxbridge and Ivy LLMs. Whatever snobbishness I have seen has been centred around BALLB degrees (NLU vs non-NLU). And what REALLY makes a difference is if you are a finance bro with an IIT-IIM/Ivy MBA background. You will encounter some of them in your professional life. You will then realise who the real Brahmins and Shudras are in terms of degrees!
Coming to my own experience, I went to a very prestigious NLU and then a mid-tier foreign university. Got into corp law (helped by my NLU alumni network), made a shit ton of money, got bored, returned to my hometown, started a business, also made money, then became semi-retired to spend my days trading in stocks and investing, playing squash, reading, and raising a child with my wife (who I met abroad while studying).
Based on my experience, I’d say go for it, enjoy what life gives you and prioritise happiness first!
I want to ask whether these internships after graduation would really hold value and is it advisable to keep interning.
P.S. - This is not a corporate space and therefore the opportunities that come out in this area are limited.
That said, there is one big risk that JGLS faces. If the Bar Council of India scraps the foreign lawyers exam or gives instant recognition to UK degrees because of the FTA, then the nepo babies and rich kids may head off to the UK to study law, instead of going to Sonipat. They currently don't because they have to appear for the exam, which deliberately has a very low pass rate.

1) Preparing for the job- given the recent resignation letter scandal, life at T1s is not easy. You can hone your skills, to prepare you better for the job.
2) you can try dating lol
Did a little snooping around here (as any good lawyer does) and found this... quirk. Want to peek into a juicy comment? Too bad, rookie! Looks like we're running on a seniority system. Who designed this, King Arthur's Round Table?
Hold up before you rain down with "Quality over Quantity!" or "Wise old owls only!" - this reminds me of a story. Ever heard of the Magna Carta? Big parchment, lots of freedom talk, but mainly for the rich folks. Imagine a fresh-out-of-law-school chap back then with some brilliant ideas, but... "Shush, kiddo! The grown-ups are talking."
Isn’t it a bit like saying only Dadaji gets the remote, and we all have to watch reruns of 'C.I.D' or 'Suryavansham'... again?
And just for giggles, imagine Socrates here, labeled a 'noob'. "To question or not to question, that is... Oops! Access denied!"
Should we give this policy a second thought? Or just stock up on popcorn and wait for the juniors to start a digital uprising?
Here’s to old-timers, the young blood, and a spoonful of cheekiness!
Cheers!
- VC chose the Amity/Symbi model of many students instead of the NLU model of limited students.
- Too many human rights and public law professors have been recruited by the VC (a human rights guy himself). The students are not getting trained well in subjects for which there is market demand.
-VC and Naveen Jindal have opened a bunch of white elephant schools (public policy, psychology, architecture, lib arts, journalism etc) which are bleeding the university. JGLS is forced to subsidise them.
Increment of 15-20%
Bonus range always an over 100%. Many take home 200%.

Most of the firms are not coming to hiring except for a few campuses citing hiring freeze.
Since you know Hardeep's team well, why don't you post how many people have joined and left that team in last 5 years.
I was in AZB Delhi so have a very good idea of how ▮▮▮ that team is. ▮▮▮
If you can't research enough to tell MNLU Mumbai is not even Tier 2, maybe law is not the best choice

Now, 'toxic' isn’t just a cheeky refrain but a haunting reality. 'Toxic behavior' or the 'toxicity of a workplace' isn't just out of a song; it's the symphony of a myriad of ill-fated life choices. For some, it’s the ripple effect of dubious parenting, turning darling kiddos into dreaded office trolls hungry for misguided validation. Others might cloak their insecurities in a facade of aggression, dubbing themselves Type A, Alpha, Sigma, or whatever the buzzword bingo winner is nowadays. After all, when the going gets tough, the tough get... toxic!
Still true after the last set of increments?
our youngsters should be taught to lead, have Indian firms go for global presence.
take this leaf from Indian start-ups and unicorns.
time to change the rotten DNA.
Be ready for questions on what is the market for thresholds under these clauses. Why and when should you allow any deviation from the same.
Also the basics of contract law will be asked for sure. (Frustration vs. FM, Indemnity vs. damages, etc.)
They will be more concerned on your way of thinking vis-a-vis applying basics to the propositions that are unknown to you, than you having very deep knowledge about the field at this stage as an A1.
All the best!!
2. Yes, Oxbridge and top 6 Ivies
3a. 5-6
3b. Again depends on target firm, but at some point extra qualification does not add any perceived value.
NY BIglaw, Other cities Biglaw, then White shoe, then MC. Check the revenues and PEPs. MC firms are equivalent to Indian t2 firms due to work life balance, low pay, good work culture. US Biglaw is the same as AZB or C/SAM, very toxic and toooo long hours, but million dollar pay checks in 7 years PQE.
CC is not US biglaw, it caters to UK mostly. The guy you are referring to who did a VS at Bakers and now works there, had incredibly great connections in the firm, which is why he was allowed into the Open day in his 1st/ 2nd year which is an event exclusive to UK Law schools (prestigious ones).
Also I work at one of K, S and W, and been in NYC for several years after working at Links for some. So I know.
2016 Batch
ILNU (AZB
- rubber glove bhajias
- fried fly fryums
- lizard rice
Clean air and infra (India is catching up on infra) is not, in my humble opinion worth sacrificing the above.
How to tell them I come from a C-grade college with a fetish for attendance. Also, idk how many of you can relate but during my college days, there was not a lot of buzz around online internships, so that option wasn't available either. However, I have some decent internships, publications, courses, extra curriculars, paper presentations, achievements etc, so how can I add Aate me namak jitna jusitification?
