We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.
Therefore, in using the site, you must agree to do your best to uphold these community guidelines.
Note that what you find here is written and moderated by anonymous people on the internet.
Therefore everything you read here is very likely unverified, rumour, speculation and/or downright false.
In continuing to read anything here, you must therefore agree not to take anything you read here as factual and that you will exercise due caution, diligence and common sense before acting on any information you may come across here.
You also agree to report any inaccurate or malicious comments with the buttons. Moderators take action within 24 hours, as required and appropriate under law.

Do you solemnly agree to all of the above?
Is it true?
If yes, what is the exact nature of their shortcoming? Can it be addressed?
If no, how does one go about getting the Administrator changed for the 2024 Jessup?
I have made a similar mistake and staying unemployed at home has really affected my mental health.
Please keep your bias and politics out of this.
I'm PQE 6 in a T1, looking to switch to public M&A, currently in PE/VC.
Whats the best M&A team in T1 for public listed companies?
Above can be in terms of 1. Deals - prestige, size and volume, 2. Work culture, 3. Overall prestige.
a) Expanding student numbers like crazy, taking many mediocre students and putting pressure on recruitments.
b) Expanding faculty because of that, many of whom are not great.
c) Setting up loss-making schools one after the other. Needlessly competing with Ashoka, JNU, TISS and various B-schools, policy schools, journalism schools and architecture schools, instead of just focusing on competing with NLUs.
d) As a result of c, making JGLS (the only profit-making school) fund the costs of the same.
Raj has been VC since 2009: 14 years is a long time. Maybe it's time for a change? Shouldn't all VCs have a shelf life? How long does he intend to go on for? 20 years?
There are plenty of things Raj can do if he leaves. For example, the Congress can make him education minister in Tamil Nadu. He can implement lots of good ideas there. Or he can join Jio University and do even bigger things there, using Mukesh Ambani's coffers.
P.S. This is for JGLS students and alumni only. Requesting others not to butt in, troll or fake being a JGLS student/alum.
If that doesn't work out you can always pitch yourself for a position of fresher to a senior by going to his office or his firm. It's a bit risky but hey what's the loss?
1. The court's name
2. Case Title
3.Coram
4. Date of judgment
5. Citation (Atleast provide two)
Now it also depends upon your senior, one of my seniors like to have it in a tabular format with one side mentioning all the relevant paragraphs and just the gist of that para in the another side.
Another Senior just wants me to dump all the relevant paras in a presentable manner while mentioning the above-mentioned details.
And always provide a highlight copy of the judgment and for your own sake save a clean copy of the judgment so whenever your senior wants a clean version you don't have to download it again from manupatra or scc
Hope this helps.
Which year can I expect a PPO- 4rth or 5th year. How to go about extensions and callbacks in this team specifically.
What all should be included?
Dear seniors, please enlighten.

Hi guys, updates to the table to see how things have changed?
They ultimately hired someone from Modern School, Barakhamba. Everyone knows who studies at that school (for the uninitiated - children of politicians and bureaucrats).
The same scam has been running at Invest India - their entire staff is children of bureaucrats and politicians.
I lose touch of all law school subjects.
I want to write Bihar Judicial Services. I don't have any reservations.
Isn't it risky to quit my firm life to go for Judicial Services Coaching?
How many years will it take? Considering that I haven't prepared so far and has lost touch with everything?
Is it worth to quit and do judicial services prep?
But this is a confirmed news from my immediate senior batch that the VC of GNLU has shown the highest levels of favouritism and nepotism, as he has literally alloted a full Prof Cabin to a student Convenor of a Comm. Even though the teacher has 2 cabins, even then giving a Profs cabin to a student is just unbelievable. There has been a big disquiet and prob plans of protests are underway, unless the decision is overturned at the earliest. โฎโฎโฎ

Now that we are on the topic of toxic behaviours letโs turn the lens towards NWSFP toxic freshers/ interns/ associates. We should really have a list to make sure that moms/ pops of these super talented associates donโt bother the managing partners/ senior partners of the law firms to give them a job. Iโll add the first one:

Ab uspe info bhi chahiye?
First questions first, how much do you pay your juniors? Your office staff ? Since you love to contribute to society and are able to charge whatever price you quote from your clients - thatโs a material question.
Your generation was apparently doing โrapeโ cases and now are successful enough to name your price for clients? Please enlighten us how you are contributing to society by handling presumably criminal matters at a crazy fee. These fees donโt reflect salaries of even the most successful corporate lawyers, forget litigation.
This is what your generation has done, let me give some examples:
1) many of you are in positions today thanks to your mom and dadโs connections, if you didnโt have that access - then were lucky to work hard at a time when there was hardly any competition, just take a good luck at older and younger lawyers today and youโll get a good sense of average intelligence in each category to see where thereโs more competition (many senior lawyers who charge a price they want to in my experience eat samosas and gossip all day, are insanely rude and entitled, are fixers or know the judge, no special ability is needed for these multiple talents, Iโve lost count of the No of meetings Iโve been in where this what a successful lawyer brings to the table),
2) you donโt pay your juniors because you are still stuck in your mentality of earning 15k โin your timeโ, but find is alright to charge fees that make no sense either in terms of the legal market or what other lawyers earn.
3) You love to talk about hard work but yell at people who give you coffee and cost cut for staff around you who are obv working way harder than you in pathetic conditions
4) not to mention how many of you make your money the corruption and fixing is so disgusting. Each generation of lawyers is not comfortable with this crap because we donโt want to โcontributeโ to a shitty India. I used to live in a colony where houses worth 30 crores were owned by โlawyersโ Iโd never heard of, and Iโve been a lawyer in delhi all my life. Itโs anyoneโs guess whose money they are managing. These lawyers who you are pushing to work hard can bleed themselves dry but wonโt make 1/3 of that in their lifetime, even if they do, inflation will kill them. I guess dining judges, bureaucrats, and Police and helping builders is lots of hard work.
5) Youโve blocked FDI in law because it doesnโt benefit you, and you will be forced to compete with global talent; you also know your fixing and toxic slave owner mentality is hard to explain to foreign firms and lawyers. They also run lawyers to the ground, but the market has a lot more options for people who donโt want to do that kind of work, they at least have some policies that can have some effect, at least they arenโt lala firms.
I can go on .. The legal market in India is a goddamn joke.
So please, spare this crap of working hard and contributing to society - All youโve done is line your pockets. And expect others to be subservient around you, itโs just a power move and nothing else.
The best proof of your narcissism is when your kids become lawyers and then suddenly you all are huge believers in work life balance because your daughter / son who works for 2-3 years before marriage and decides to take it easy after need to show up on time for family dinners / vacations and find working in law sooo stressful.
If you think you had a hard life, and donโt think it makes sense for the current generation to be treated with respect, then unfortunately all you learnt from your struggle is how to hustle, you need to deliberate if making things better for others is what real growth is, itโs a complete failure if each subsequent generation just wants to repeat the same thing and expect the same results. If you think everything should be the same, then by all means expect your kids to do the same without connections / breaks the way you expect from other lawyers, and see how you feel.

Ramblings of a former Amarchand Associate
Introduction โ A little bit about myself!
Hi! Many of you may know me as a madman who came to NLS for a week in May, as one who was rude to Professor Visalakshi in the first-year class, as a person some of the LL.M students believe โthreatened to thrashโ Bishwarup, as one who walked around campus with a menacing grimace and a not-so-pleasant disposition! Some of you may remember me as a pleasant bloke with a lot of angst โ Aditya Jha, Shinoj Koshy, Manu and a few others. At the outset, let me apologize to all those who felt threatened, scared and got upset by my behaviour. My intentions were noble, my method a little harsh.
No, I did not threaten to thrash Bishwarup, and yes, I was rude to Professor Visalakshi but the reason was the complete degradation of contract law (which I believe to be the foundation of commercial law).
Who am I? My name is Ashwin Mathew. I studied at what I believe is one of the finest institutions in this country, NLS, from 1993 to 1998. I did well and was recruited on campus by Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co. I worked at Amarchand for 6 years. I left at the end of January 2004.
Objective
What struck me when I visited NLS recently, was the unidirectional focus on a career at Amarchand. Students of NLS often asked me about myself. What seemed to impress them was not that I was a former student but that I worked at Amarchand for 6 years. I was saddened by such reactions. I hope what I write down in this essay makes you guys think about your futures and your goals. As Pablo Picasso said โIf you know what you are doing and why you are doing it, donโt do it. Try something else!โ
Let me also clarify (for the โcynicsโ, โunbelieversโ, die-hard fans of Amarchand) that this essay is not a critique of Amarchand or an attempt at venting my angst against a venerable institution. I merely provide a perspective from someone whoโs been there and done that! Advice, they say, is easy to give, it costs nothing. To which I add, advice is easy to dismiss, it too costs nothing! The choice is yoursโฆ
What does NLS give you?
Have any of you wondered what expertise NLS gives you?
At the end of my 5th year, I too believed I had the world at my feet, that I had tremendous legal acumen and that my breadth of legal knowledge was incapable of challenge. After a couple of months at Amarchand, I realized a bitter truth โ I was a seedling in the vast legal field filled with the garbage of deceit, incestuous back-rubs and wily litigators on the one hand and banyan trees of knowledge, understanding and compassion on the other! I had no experience in practical application of legal theory. I was dismissed as verbose and pedantic. I was crushed. My confidence hit a low.
It was time to think, to ponderโฆNLS gave me the gift of articulation, the ability to research a legal issue thoroughly and (for those who were diligent) the basics of law.
Law to me is about people and their relationships. Law balances conflict since every human relationship is founded on the propensity towards conflict. Therefore, law is vital to human harmony and discipline. Corporate law is no different.
Amarchand โ A counter
Amarchand โ the name sends shivers down your spine, makes you imagine the pinnacle of achievement, makes you strive towards an elusive partnership at this august institution. Your eyes light up โ aah, yes, Cyril has done his job well. He has made believers out of most of you. He attracts the finest NLS has to offerโฆ
But stop, Do any of you know the pain that Piyush Joshi, Cyrus Bharucha, Aazmeen Kasad, Tushna Thapliyal and myriad others faced as a result of this great organization. Have any of you thought about why Vinati Kastia left the organization after making partner? Have any of you wondered why Rajesh Marralla, Sandeep Farias, P. Sunil, Kajal Bhardwaj left Amarchand?
How many people make partner at Amarchand? How many people are Senior Associates? How many are from NLS? Do the math, the numbers will startle. They are but a miniscule drop in the ocean of talent that Amarchand receives from NLS every year. Probably, a little more than 5%.
The mantras
Mantra 1 โ Negative Oppression โ Amarchand thrives on negative oppression. Take a brilliant mind, oppress it with negativity, constant criticism, uncertainty and transform such brilliance into craven commercial greed.
Mantra 2 โ Create commitments โ Cyrilโs favourite associates are all married to one another โ Ashwath & Nimisha, Rahul & RunaโฆThey may love one another but an invisible hand did push them together! Cyrilโs economic largesse ensures loans to Amarchand associates to chain them to him till they are economically capable of repaying him. A loyalty bonus is payable for those who have spent 8 years in the organization. To alleviate the cost of living in Mumbai, Cyril re-imburses each Amarchand associate a fraction of the actual cost. To live in a 1BHK house in a decent part of Mumbai with a car costs a minimum of Rs. 25,000 a month. Otherwise, settle for a PG and suffer!
Mantra 3 โ Ease out ineptitude โ All those considered inept are not shown the door immediately. They are eased out. Take Ranbir Singh, Tushna, Aazmeen.
Mantra 4 โ If you are not from NLS, make sure you are connected โ Most non-NLS recruits in Amarchand are well connected. Be it a judgeโs son or a top Chartered Accountantโs, be it the daughter of ICICI Bankโs Executive Director or the daughter of a top executive at the Aditya Birla Group. Another thing, know this, all non-NLSites at Amarchand generally dislike NLS students. Amarchand ensures that they must do much more to succeed. A classic example is Shaneen Dastur, partner of Amarchand. It took her 9-10 years to make salaried partner after being a qualified solicitor. Understandably, she dislikes NLS students who can make equity partner in 7 years.
Envyโฆ
The Positives
Positive 1 โ Brilliant Partners โ Amarchand is blessed with some of the finest partners in India. Cyril is the foremost commercial lawyer in the country with good reason. M. P. Bharucha is the foremost litigating solicitor in the country and has a decent non-litigation practice. Alka Bharuchaโs articulation and people skills are tremendous. Shardul & Pallavi are brilliant legal minds. Umakanth and Vishwanath are leaders in their respective fields and wonderful human beings.
Positive 2 โ Great Work โ The work in Amarchand is superb. You would feel pride when you pick up an economic daily every day and find one your deals mentioned as a headline. Invariably, Amarchand advises the top dealmakers.
The Negatives
Negative 1 โ Vitiated Working Environment โ The famous adage, โprotect me, not from my enemies of whom I know of, but from my friends of whom I know notโ applies to the Amarchand environment. The work-stations are arranged like an assembly line in a car workshop or a seamstress factory. The noise levels are terrible. The A/C is switched off at 7 PM (there is no cross-ventilation). Better off working in a sweat-shop in Thailand!
Negative 2 โ Vandana Shroff โ Spend a week in the Amarchand dining room! Also, note the names given to each loo โ Raja & Rani, Romeo and Juliet, Mardana & Zardana. Also, note the reserved parking spots. Also, note Valencia, Sripat and Ramesh (the informers!). Also note, the allocation of work. Also note, Deepak Jobanputra (fondly called D Jo), the IT expert! โRes Ipsa Loquiturโ!
Negative 3 โ Horrible IT resources โ Amarchand does not have a database. The IT support is pathetic. A lot of time is wasted in re-inventing the wheel.
Negative 4 โ Big Ideas, No Implementation โ Cyril has vision but does not have the administrative capabilities to implement them. M. P. Bharucha has the administrative capabilities but cannot work with Cyril since their working styles are totally different.
Negative 5 โ The Evaluation System and Bonus โ There is no transparency in evaluations and very often evaluations are done by a partner who has not seen a single dayโs work by the Junior Associate being evaluated. And, please consider your first evaluation as a good indicator of where you will be slotted. Also, as far as the Bharuchaโs go there is no co-relationship between the evaluations and the level of bonus. While your entitlement may be large, know this, what you finally get is a fraction of your entitlement. Sometimes as low as 55% of your bonus entitlement.
Negative 6 โ Delhi and Mumbai follow different policies โ If you work in Delhi chances are you will go up the Amarchand ladder quicker than Mumbai. Double promotions happen in Delhi, not in Mumbai (except Nimisha). The policies are completely different and so is the work culture. Promotions in Delhi are also based on the level of billings. In Mumbai, that is โirrelevantโ.
A Final Word
Join Amarchand for experience. But prepare yourself for 16-hour days, no food, no life outside Amarchand and a constant sense that you will never be good enough. Ask yourself this, what makes you happy? The desire to get up early and enjoy the day or the dread of what the day may bring you? In Amarchand, most likely, the latter will apply.
Those of you who want to experience the angst I went through after Amarchand, please read my play โThe Soul of Lawโ. Some people in NLS have a copy.
For those who still dream of being an Amarchand partner, I wish you luckโฆJust a caution, when you feel used and exploited, get out.
I end with a few lines from my favourite verses:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance well runโฆ
How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?
How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?
How may associates will it take to be known that too many NLSites have died!
The answer is in youโฆ
Best wishes and Good Luck,
Ashwin Mathew
NLS Batch of 1998.
Interns these days have 1000 of internships on their cv which add very little value. The amount of internships you do are not helpful in the long run, what matters at the end of the day is how much you've learnt, what you've gained (ppo
Any work place, any form of bullying is Not Okay. There is a reason, work ethics and professional conduct has been set up. Use the appropriate legitimate redressal mechanisms to sort out typical or even irregular employee issues or matters, (even if the employee comes under the scope of a "domestic house-help"). Any form of verbal, physical or mental harassment meant to demean a human being, just because they are your employee is simply Not Okay.
Leaving a toxic workplace is an act of bravery and not of defeat.
In terms of salary I think S&R and Lexygen definitely pay more than others.
WLB I am not aware who is best. If anyone has any inputs I also want to know.
And being in NALSAR'26 myself, I know atleast 1 of my friends who are interning in T1 this November/December, "without connections" and another in T2.
does GNLU not have a common WhatsApp group or friends?
1. It's sometimes not possible to tell in advance which direction a thread will take, and we try to react quickly and fairly when we receive reports of threads. After a while, we had locked that specific thread, since it became a little over the top in its trolling. The post has now been republished, though obviously (as usual) trollish comments (from both sides of the spectrum), have not been published.
2. In respect of what we would do with insider info: what would / could we do with insider info? In part, we might 'use' insider info in order to inform future moderation decisions and to assess the plausibility of other posts, whether there is a concerted trolling campaign going on right now on a subject, or whether there is something real going on.
But if you are implying something more nefarious that we could use with insider trollish comments, do let us know, it might give us ideas :)
Correct assessment or too pessimistic?

If you're allotted these partners request the firm for different partners.
True, these are the times when absolute morality, responsibility, and liability are tested. These are precisely the times when maturity and responsibility taken by a VC or administration of an institution show how mature and answerable they are. If a VC is an old man and is incapable of handling such situations or taking responsibility for what has happened, he should not be a VC.
Rent 1rm common toilet/kitchen in non-slum outskirts area will be 10k (both the chamber and acco should be within 1-1.5 km of metro)
Travel Metro - 3k
food - 6k
Misc - 5k
20k doesnt cut the bare min, so you would need family help for at least 12 months to overcome the shortfall
You get what you put in to law school.
Back in the day nls and nalsar and nujs students protested to hold on to good faculty. Exposed financial scams in the university, really took charge of their institution and changed it for the better. Yall just complain like karens.
Example, yesterday there was a thread on an infamous partner in a firm recently accused of being toxic. LI received a lot of comments, did not post most of them. Subsequently LI deleted the thread. However, it kept the thread subsisting for a long period of time, within which it would have personally reviewed a lot of unfiltered comments and received insider info.
So if LI planned to anyway delete it, it should have done so in the beginning? But it decided to receive a lot of comments instead. Nothing wrong with this but just saying.
Dont work then if its so hard to provide an account of freaking billable hours. If you cant respect your clients time and money what makes you think anyone would want to work to provide you with leisure class life? Leave your job and go become a landlord somewhere. sit on your behind and eat rent money the rest of your life.
Whoever told you youre the proletariat lied- Its clear by this marie antoinette let them eat cake behaviour yall engage on here that youre the bourgeoise who enjoy privilege in this country.
They want highest ever compensation, window seats-sea facing to sit in office, advance tech systems to work on with their mobiles, best quality work and big deals of their asking. All this with Starbucks coffee, Chaayos tea, Chinese-Japanese food and uninterrupted time outs for their sutta and gossip breaks in office. Nothing wrong in these great expectations, they should get them all, BUT one should learn to work hard for these?
If they look back, they are probably making more money than their parents or other family members at their time or even now in some cases.
Corporate lawyers are sitting in AC rooms, have AC taxies to pick and drop them at the cost of their firms or clients, eat and waste any food and drinks that most of Indians canโt even afford. They donโt want to look at struggle others in the country make to achieve these, like medical practitioners, or even lawyers working in courts etc. They want to be oblivious of surroundings where their parents and seniors worked throughout life to accomplish something.
And then they make fanciest ornamental resignations, which reads better than any opinions or legal draft they ever professionally prepared or are even capable of while they were working. They want to instigate suffocate others who may be going through turbulent professional times, this is when peers should be helping to overcome the bad patch, but not pushing one down the hill?
IT IS TIME, time to change. Change your attitude, work hard for what you crave to achieve, have that gratitude in life. Be better person and better professional. Be considerate to others.
Learn and DO NOT BE entitled.
Literally no one in law school tells you that law firms are easy- You learn from year one that its a grind , that its demanding, that its not stimulating- all of it. How is it cruel that you didnt listen to anyones advice or do any internships to figure out your career choices?
