We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.
Therefore, in using the site, you must agree to do your best to uphold these community guidelines.
Note that what you find here is written and moderated by anonymous people on the internet.
Therefore everything you read here is very likely unverified, rumour, speculation and/or downright false.
In continuing to read anything here, you must therefore agree not to take anything you read here as factual and that you will exercise due caution, diligence and common sense before acting on any information you may come across here.
You also agree to report any inaccurate or malicious comments with the buttons. Moderators take action within 24 hours, as required and appropriate under law.
Our full terms and conditions apply too.
Do you solemnly agree to all of the above?
1. I applied to one chamber having vacancy. Clearly mentioned in my application that I AM currently working. Requested a mutually acceptable time for further discussions, if any
2. Chamber associate randomly schedules an interview. I reply, communicating my non-availability. Pat comes a reply, again, unilateral scheduling, that too, on a court working day
3. It is known that courts tend to sit beyond regular working hours where I usually practice, and where the said chamber has a vacancy
4. I naturally cannot leave my prior commitments, which is the reason why I stressed on mutually acceptable timings
Questions
1. Is this adversely indicative of the chamber culture?
2. Should I nonetheless go ahead with this (of course, if my matter reaches before their timing for the meeting, not letting the client be stranded like this)
3. Has anybody else experienced this? [First experience of this sort for me. Practitioners far more experienced have shown due regard to the fact that the persons who apply may also be working, and hence have seen many instances when both sides mutually agree on a timing convenient for both]
Best hope is to stop BJP around 230 seats. So that they need their NDA partners more than anytime before. This way they remain grounded and won't do dadagiri by passing laws as per their whims.
But it looks impossible. BJP can touch 330 seats mark on its own.
Recently, my dad brought up the idea of pursuing law during a conversation. I took the AILET test, gave the exam at home for the sake of it to even consider law as an option and gave it as a mock and scored decent (83), but found out that the legal field is pretty exclusive, and connections matter a lot. Since I don't have those connections, I'm thinking about going for corporate law(?). Engineering seemed like a good option with my PCMB background, but I'm mediocre with math and logic and cannot cope with its volatile nature. As for BCom/management, I haven't really looked into it much but it ain't something that I would be ecstatic for.
I'm just looking for practical advice, so please reconsider any exotic career options. Spare me the "follow your heart" rhetoric too. I just need some straightforward suggestions that make sense.
How is this alliance supposed to win exactly?
Pretty useless stuff!
any system can bring about progress. look at the Soviet Union from the 30s up to the late 70s. they were rivalling the Mecca of capitalism, USA, in terms of economic and technological growth, as well as geopolitical influence. the same stands true for China in the modern world. They have been able to bring about a great deal of progress and advancements with a combination of an authoritarian regime and state owned companies.
the efficacy of a system is not decided simply by looking at whether it can or cannot induce material progress. it is determined by judging the cost of the said progress. can this progress be brought about ethically and sustainably?
during a certain era, for a certain part of the world, the answer was yes. but the population has grown manyfold. several economies have been hit by successive recessions. the mental health of most people has dropped tremendously while they work in jobs paying peanuts given by the benevolent corporate capitalist gods. unemployment and underemployment are on the rise. "gig work" is becoming more common too, which is basically the same thing as hookups in the job market. companies cut off employees and employees cut off companies much faster and with much less hesitation than they did in, say, the 50s or 60s, leading to an era of great uncertainty.
looking at these factors, and the increasingly common failures of capitalism in maintaining a stable economy for countries not named USA (and at this point, not even for them), i don't think it's unnatural to question capitalism. capitalism is a system which determines how resources must be allocated. that is it. it was made to fit human needs.
it did well for itself, and that too only for a specific part of the world, during a period of time when they could easily exploit slaves and bonded servants. it's not doing all too great now, neither in terms of bringing about societal progress, nor in terms of bringing fulfillment to individuals. which is why there is an increasing number of people questioning it. nobody's going to be loyal to capitalism simply because of what it "used to be able to do" when my great grandfather was alive. that's a logical fallacy.
even the progress you speak of has slowed down big time because of capitalism. the world's brightest scientific minds are no longer conducting research and discovering new phenomenon and uncovering the essential truths of the world. they're designing the next samsung galaxy fold or iphone 9000+. another bunch of them are programming the next algorithm to process user data for some social media platform. there's a reason why pure scientific progress has slowed down. so i don't see the progress aspect being extremely robust when it comes to modern day capitalism as well. however, if you consider adding a screen to every single item possible as growth, then we're truly having a lot of technological growth.
Bombay law unhi logo ka hai.
Another one would be bharucha & Partners. After promising assessment internship based on performance the hr never contacted them for one.
High time we hold tech companies liable because ordinary people could be targeted next. Tech bros like Elon Musk think they are above the law.

I don't understand why everyone on LI is just acting like an idiot and not replying nicely.
P.S: I'm an atheist and I've embarassed quite a few people by asking simple ramayana questions lol.
The place is filled with nonsensical office politics.
Office infrastructure is extremely poor.
Trainees, Associates and SAs are made to sit in the basement, with no ventilation and airflow. The place stinks. I don't have to tell you what it does to your lungs. Had an associate who resigned within 6 months of joining because of recurring chest infections [and she is originally from Delhi, so pretty used to pollution etc.].
Only one common [unisex] washroom for the entire admin staff, interns, trainees, associates and SAs.
Socialising with colleagues in office is looked down upon [the HR will literally "assign" you different work desks the very next day, like you're in school].
Mounds of voluntary [read "mandatory"] admin and KM tasks that no one wants to do.

Is so then which, and why specifically? If there are any people working as HR, Senior Associates or Partners here, then please reply.
1. Restore the Hindu temple that was destroyed and allot land to Muslims for a mosque in another location. Basically the Ayodhya formula given by the SC.
2. Repeat the same for Mathura
Imagine if you have a bail hearing before oak-wood bench & it gets listed before fella's bench or if you are in DHC your case goes from Maninder's bb & listed before harry sadu ....
Registry clerks won't act like agents of judge, there are enough advocates to do it
For normal everyday use you could go for a blue fragrance like Aqua Di Gio Profondo/Parfum or a Dior Sauvage EDP/Elixir.
If you're low on budget a Lacoste l.12.12 blanc is a great option. It was what introduced me to the world of fragrances and I stand by it.
Thanks for the detailed answer. If you don't mind can you tell in which specific PG did you stay? The issue is that most PGs showing up on Google Maps have low amount of reviews and therefore don't seem trustworthy. I want my PG to be a safe and decent space.
Also, does Bharucha provide desktop/laptop to their interns or do we have to take a laptop along with us?
Was never really a judicial aspirant nor had any prior preparation, mostly spent time in litigation internships, just had the recent case laws upto my sleeves.
Exam ain't that tough.
How does the transaction work like? Does the registry act as a conduit to the judge or is he just an agent of the judge?
I bagged an assessment internship at the firm. I’ll be interning in the Litigation/Disputes Team.
Any reviews?
See how that works both ways? The truth is institutions have cultures all of their own. no one is really more intelligent or objective if theyre succumbing to group think and tribal identities like LW and RW.
If what you've stated about Mr. Sathe is true, thanks for that information. He's truly inspirational!
The entire firm is running on policies that our master Mr. Saraf dictates.
One day he chooses to make a policy that WFHs are only allowed on Wednesdays, he puts it in the WhatsApp group, and it becomes a policy.
You just make policies as per your whims and fancies. It's the opposite of a professional firm. Looks more like a Bollywood family business where Mr. Saraf is the iconic 'Babu ji'. He will give increments only when he wants to. He will give you your bonus 6-7 months late. But he will want you to always be on your toes and forget work life balance.
As of today lawsikho is 240 cr
On listing may get to see 500 cr
that is the difference bro
come back we miss you
I promise we will go easy on you henceforth 😂
A. Foreign jurisdiction have a robust rule of law seen through legislations and judgements that are not that technical
B. The judicial system is much more independent and the judgements do not run into hundreds of pages. Judgements are simple and not verbiose. This makes your life so much easier
C. Legal research itself is more speedy since governmental website (almost always) contain delegated legislation.
D. The outreach of foreign firms easily surpasses domestic ones in terms of quality of work, clients and money.
Foreign firms do understand that the quality of work here (eg CAM's which has been discussed substantially in Legally India) are not upto international standards. This is why even senior associates if they move abroad are designated first as trainees.
She is working at the #1 law firm in canada
a better way: pass the NCA exam sitting in India so you become the equivalent of a canadian law grad
you can do this in 6 months to 1 year and at a fraction of the cost of doing LLM in Canada (probably about 1.5 lakh in exam fees)
Once you clear NCA, it is reasonably easy to already get paralegal work remotely from Canadian lawyers who are all fed up with the extremely high wages of paralegals and love to work with cheaper NCA-cleared people from India (who know Canadian law as they had to pass those exams)
While you do this, you appear in the Ontario bar exam - will take you another 6 months to 1 year to clear
If you do these steps you will build enough connections and understanding of the market to find opportunities
Remember that lawyers there are also hard-pressed to find good juniors who can get their shit done, just they do not want to bet on some random Indian LLM who spent a year studying Canadian law and will in all likelihood need to be trained a lot before they become useful
Also if you want to land in canada after NCA, getting a residency is not hard, and you can also sign up for cheaper 3-6 months diploma courses which don't cost you a bomb like LLM
I know one guy who signed up for a psychology course that was free, landed in canada and then got a job as paralegal only because he did nca first
2 reasons
1. quality of lawyers is strictly managed - not anyone and everyone can become a lawyer, failure rate in bar exam is quite high, law college studies very rigorous. In India CAs earn much better than average lawyer because of this quality control
2. as a result of 1, general public has no faith in lawyers, and avoid going to lawyers where possible. Our legal market could be much bigger, but because people do not expect results from lawyers and courts they often avoid legal jhamela. In other countries, people trust the legal system so they approach lawyers and lawyers make more money in the process
3. lawyers are not allowed to run their practices like proper business. No marketing, no ads. Also lawyers do not think like entrepreneurs. This is now how it is in UK or USA. people are clear that legal services is a business, they need to be competitive and need to provide a solution. So focus is different, culture is different, and lawyers are usually millionaires because lifting tides lift all boats.
To be honest, Indian lawyers who are entrepreneurial, and focus on:
1. building a brand
2. developing their network/ lead gen strategies
3. hire people for leverage
4. build solid processes
5. look at their practice as a business
end up making a lot of money in India as well just that it is very rare
The experience was not the best tbh, they dont do too much work, they are known for Disputes and Investment Funds (again not much considering ICUL and the lot). No stipend for first interns. However they provide a system. The interns are at Floor 3 and the associates sit at Floor 13 which causes a lot of disconnect. Try interacting with them a lot when they call you up/ you go for lunch.
You wouldnt be able to find accommodation in Nariman Point obviously, find a PG in Marine Lines. I lived in one which costed me 16k for one month (including complimentary breakfast) and a little more for the electricity. You can easily find the bus 100 which takes you to Free Press House easily every morning, but coming home is an ordeal as it ends its route at 7 30 PM. But Marine Lines is walking distance/ use a cab (which can be reimbursed should your timing exceed 9 PM, but the associates know clearly not to let you stay till then)
150k (which is with US Firms in their UK offices like Sidley, Kirkland, Skadden which never hire from Indian Law schools) with taxes is 96,193 UK Pounds after taxes (https://www.gov.uk/estimate-income-tax), which is approximately 40 Lakhs in PPP. (Please consider the exorbitant rents in London).
However if you play your cards right and make even R/ S Partners in these firms you can make huge bonuses. But again, this is very hard for an Indian unless they have coupled it with a Harvard Law (or similar standing) Masters (Just check the statistics).
Also I'm so sorry if I come across as pedantic, but I am only a junior law student. Just did a little too much useless research considering the large number of upvotes on this misguided statistic.
Regards
However just inform the warden about this. Dont complaint. So that if the addiction takes a toll or something you arent held responsible. Also please keep friends in knowledge that you dont do drugs and it's only your friends.
If we publicly shame them maybe the HRs will stop restorating to this practice. Heart wrenching to be left jobless after investing so much time and efforts.
I'll start:
Lakshmikumaran & Sridhan
Watching Animal on Netflix now :)
