We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.
Therefore, in using the site, you must agree to do your best to uphold these community guidelines.
Note that what you find here is written and moderated by anonymous people on the internet.
Therefore everything you read here is very likely unverified, rumour, speculation and/or downright false.
In continuing to read anything here, you must therefore agree not to take anything you read here as factual and that you will exercise due caution, diligence and common sense before acting on any information you may come across here.

Do you solemnly agree to all of the above?
a) LI and the usual cribbing about law firms always paints a bad picture. But it is not entirely true. Law firms all across the globe have intense hours. It pays you a lot of money that will ensure a good enough and comfortable upper-middle class life. It is not necessarily ALL BAD.
b) No good, high-paying profession with great career prospects is without long hours and toxicity. Being at the top of your field, be it medicine, law, engineering, finance, UPSC, you will have to sacrifice a lot of things. If you think corporate law is demanding and toxic, you have no clue about medicine.
c) Embrace the opportunity that has presented itself to you. Always remember that most problems have a way of working out themselves. You don't know how your law firm experience is going to be. Wait till you find out, and then worry about these things.
this is what happens when you open nlu in every mohalla :(

For kids too young to remember, NLUs had erupted in protest back in Dec 2019. Literally every single NLU student body had signed a petition. Many alumni had also joined. Candlelight vigils were held and songs of unity were sung across NLU campuses. JGLS had also joined.
So all eyes are on NLUs and Jindal for their next move.

Tbf in T1s within a few months a lot of A0s leave and that leaves vacancies - apply then when the vacancies come out
If you feel strongly about her, change teams / firm first. This is coming from a person who married another person from the same firm (very very different teams). I have also dated people in the same team many a moons ago, and it never ends well. Everything becomes too complicated.
They took interviews at RGNUL afaik and are about to at MNLU Mumbai. I don't think they visited anyplace else
Thanks in advance.
Snake can join BScLLB and become a lawyer too.
so I want to ask if if university will accept my marksheet as it's not updated and if they only check their criteria marks with that marksheet.
It's official marksheet given by Board to me but I want to be sure they will accept it as I have already got it before my paper was rechecked by board
Bcs someone here claims 22. That’s a big jump.
Serious observation by the SEBI Chair. Even ▮▮▮ startups by prominent ▮▮▮ have gone to market through this SME platform. Will anyone be caught in the crosshairs? There's a reason T1 firms' CapMarks teams refuse to do these IPOs.
Also, socialism = more customs duty? What kind of a weird definition of socialism is that? Owning a Merc is frowned upon in many circles unless you are in the douchey Investment Bankers group (which, btw, is not that well-paid as you think it is). Everyone else is happy with public transport or bikes.
write to the VC at each of the nlu and send your proposal and say that you want to do your phd under their guidance, the vc will take you in and later you may even get a job there
you will get money for part time teaching and will break even
Chennai is as welcoming as Bangalore. People's perception is that it's a Tamil only city. That is not the case anymore.

a. Look for a place nearby but because of high rent, compromise on the living standard and adjust in an okayish place (somewhere near dadar, byculla, lower parel)
b. Look for a good place (housing society with common pool, gym, clubhouse, etc.) but travel for long hours in the local (somewhere near mulund or andheri)
My work life is such that I often have to spend very long hours at the office
The team most likely to recommend for PPO in disputes is Mohit and Ashish's
1. Can I claim other exemptions apart from 44ADA like 80C or 80GG (rent) etc.
2. Does the fact that 50% of my income is deemed "expense" mean that it should reflect in my bank account (for example if I earn 1lakh per month, does it mean that my bank account should reflect that I do not have more than 50k since I am claiming it as an expense)
I had also referred a CA regarding this and he gave me an example of the tax breakup which goes like:
Assuming the package is of 16 LPA. So by 44ADA, 50% is deducted and the taxable income is 8L. On this 8L, no other deductions can be claimed so by applying new regime, it comes to 36,400 (0-3L: no tax, 3-6L: 5% i.e. 15,000 and 6-8L: 10% i.e. 20,000 plus cess 4%)
Is this how the tax is paid or is there a different practice which goes around?
There is also another thread on LI about this but I didn't quite get it so looking for answers from experienced people with simplified version.
these positions are not about power or about rewards. The VC and the deans are usually just the first among equals. universities are not companies and these people are government servants. the best way for them to make decisions is to consult with and listen to their faculty and their students. They dont have to obey any one- but they should ideally listen.
Chauhan doesnt have a PhD. I dont think thats as much about lack of interest as it is the extreme amounts of administrative work the university has been burdening him with since he joined. Its impossible to imagine a part of the university administration that would not be affected by him leaving.
And hes not some authoritarian. If you talked to him for five minutes youd know he was not a particular fan of the AD/ FM raj either but hes clearly willing to work with people who disagree with him. If hes giving up on the university and leaving- that is a troubling thing everyone should worry about.
Yes. For Ph.D. admissions, this is the exact requirement:
LLM (2-year program) after EITHER
> at least 5 years of integrated LLB degree after 10+2 examination OR
> 3 years LLB degree after 10+2+3 examination
Thanks guys :)
I'm working as an A0 at a small firm practicing in Gen corp. So in my offer letter there is a term of appraisal after 3 months of joining the firm and the firm would increased upto 10%-20 of my salary accordingly. So should i ask hr or partner what would be done this respect or should i wait?
The complainant could do real damage if she went on social media I suppose but she chose not to
I suppose she would be just given what she wants and she will back off

You are gonna spend all of your income on expensive cabs, rents and partying. Most Bangalore people's have little to no savings. Should have chosen Chennai
Chennai as a city is miles ahead in front of bangalore.
Culture/Future Prospects - Bangalore. Bangalore has far more legal opportunities than Chennai. Also language will become a problem in Chennai. In bangalore you can adjust with Hindi. Chennai not the same. Most lawyers are from Tamil Nadu. Bangalore has many law firms and in house opportunities.
Also,
Cost of living is also low because of social life. In Bangalore you club party a lot. Chennai you won't be able to do the same. That's one another reason people in Chennai save a lot.
Apart from that - you are from north, for your children assimilation will be easier in bangalore. And you are unmarried - I have seen a lot of professionals from UP Bihar in Bangalore. Not that much in Chennai. Easier to get potential spouses in bangalore.
Job opportunities /future - Bangalore any day. Especially for a north indian.
IP pays low, but there is voluminous amount of work. TMT it's not like opportunities are there.
It is unfortunate and unethical - but true - there is a significant exaggeration/ inflation in hours. There is pressure on partner for billing. There is pressure on the fee earners to meet the 2200+ billable hours annually. This is directly linked to year end reviews and bonuses. Ultimately, the client directly bears the brunt of these pressures in terms of the additional billing - which is quite difficult to keep a check on when there are multiple lawyers working on the same matter/ transaction.
2. What sort of matters so they usually have? Does it include arbitration?
3. How often is the team hiring? What do you have to do to get a PPO there ?
I am currently facing a professional dilemma. My in-house role, while offering excellent working hours, is unfortunately monotonous and the remuneration is not commensurate with my aspirations.
I have been contemplating a career change for some time now, with a keen interest in Capital Markets. I have invested significant time in understanding the relevant regulations and laws, and have also attended several interviews. The feedback from these interviews has been positive, yet I am still awaiting a definitive response.
This situation has left me somewhat perplexed. I am eager to transition into this new field and am seeking advice on how to further strengthen my understanding of the law and the procedures involved in Capital Markets. Additionally, I would appreciate any guidance on how to effectively demonstrate my capabilities, given that I do not have any internships in this field.
Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated!
a. how's the the learning curve gonna be (no prior experience in Corp/PE)
b. chances of extension (two weeks confirmed)
Are you in India or abroad?
India is a big country. Even though our corporate legal market is booming.
But the whole country has lesser numbers of corporate lawyers than a city like London
But it is very lucrative and attractive.
Amarchands tried best - and they could never suceed in Chennai. Like they did in Bangalore.
Khaitan? Chennai office is basically a Local Tamil law firm called Assentio Legal. It's more like an association than a real office.
JSA had a presence but it's mostly Chennai local lawyers who joined them. Recently CLA (A local corporate law firm) joined JSA in Chennai.
LKS is the only national practice with a good Chennai presence that's because LKS Management is fully Tamil. LKS is a Tamil firm.
Chennai legal market will continue to grow forever. But only Tamil Nadu lawyers can work. National practices can maximum have associations.
One big reason is Language AND Culture.
If you look at any tier 1 firms Bangalore office - people from across the country that too from TOP tier national law universities work.
In Bangalore tier 1 offices - hardly any kannad (local language) is spoken it's mostly English and Hindi and less than 30% of people are kannadi people. Most are from south india but you can see a lot of people from north.
But if you go to Chennai - 90% lawyers are from Tamil Nadu. Maybe few Kerala or Andhra people (even they will be born and brought up in Chennai) will be here and there. Language of business is also mostly Tamil.
You would not see top NLU folks working in Chennai law firms (compared to bangalore) Mostly Chennai law firms, they hire from Sastra, GLCs in Chennai and nowadays from NLU in Tiruchirappalli. Bangalore teams hire from across the country. Chennai teams - rarely outside these three law colleges.
Chennai corporate bar is a local bar. It's not diverse. For someone from outside it's really difficult to make a legal career in Chennai.
I have seen lot of bengalis, up walas, Rajasthanis becoming top corporate lawyers (in house and firms) in bangalore. Without even knowing the local language. But have never seen the same in Chennai.
Many Chennai companies outsources corporate legal work to Bangalore, Mumbai firms.
Chennai as a city has a lot of future. But if you are a national practice or non Tamil looking to establish yourself it's hard. Not impossible.
I just wanna some good colleges in Mumbai as I personally don’t want to go to nmims and I’m considering SVKM’s pgcl as a good option but it’s offering bls/llb and I don’t know what they teach in that
as if I wanna go into corporate law I might be needing a ba or bba llb right
idk what to do it’ll be great if someone could help thanks :)
Also, if you are targeting a T1 then you should make yourself more flexible and available because you are not in the power to make the Firm adjust as per your needs rather you are the one who has to adjust if you wish to maximize your chances.
Go ahead and apply for a month which is 5-6 months ahead in the future and plan it accordingly as to avoiding any chances of collision of the internship tenure and examinations in college.
At last, I would say that I am only aware of Khaitan and I know for sure that there are no slots left in the month of June, not even in July AND August. (Got this infor right from a partner)
Now decide as you wish! Peace!!
The reason not to worry is that all institutions go through transition. Nalsar has been through several including Veer Singh and it survived. Have a little patience. Faizan did well but the junior people who left recently are not the best professors Nalsar has ever had.
If you want to be constructive, think about people in the state and people who might be willing to move, who you want to learn from. Go tell the VC so that he can try to hire them.
