The Delhi Gymkhana Club has alleged that it was facing harassment at the hands of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) as it “resisted pressure” to give membership to Navrang Saini, a high-ranking official at the Ministry.

“Insofar as the complaint of Navrang Saini is concerned, it arises out of the Club having resisted pressure to give him membership. The Club verily believes that since (Mr) Saini was a high-ranking member in the MCA, the harassment that the club has been facing from the Department of Corporate Affairs harps back to that episode,” the club said.

There is no club called the Kolkata Gymkhana. But there is a club on LI called the Dehaat Gymkhana: full of clueless shitposters.

Coming back to the comment made, it’s true that Bombay and Calcutta are “elitist”, but still more diverse in terms of professional backgrounds. Political and government officials (and their families) form a quite small minority of members. In Delhi, it’s the opposite. And that is the root of the problem. Waitlisted professionals like MBAs. CAs, lawyers, doctors etc were denied memberships once their turn came, while the green card system was doled out to political and bureaucratic families. Hence the legal challenges which ultimately culminated in this.

Bulldozers have gone for easy targets. Kolkata has multiple Red zones wherein the KMC has flagged more than 70 percent of houses as illegal. All done bfr the new govt took over.

1. You do know that concepts like RCT etc have been used in economics? That Abhijit Banerjee, the nobel-winning economist, used these concepts? So where is all this "humanities heavy" stuff coming from exactly?

2. You do know that humanities departments (at good universities at least) have research methods training courses on statistical methods? So again, where is this coming from? Sure, some departments do this stuff in a more cursory way than others and sure, there's an argument for maybe teaching it more rigorously, and as far as I am concerned, sure there's an argument for getting statistics/econometrics teaching in at the undergrad level, but still, that doesn't create an environment for the acceptability of this language as a correct description.

3. Finally: For all this guy says, "personal experience" is an important part of the law. Indeed as Holmes says, law is built upon experience. So you cannot discount this stuff. And humanities captures experiences of people - the human condition. Be that philosophy, history, literature... whichever subject. So even to the extent that they aren't Maths focussed, they are important. And the best research often combines the best elements of the two. Look at Hamish Stewart's use of behavioural economics to show the wrong assumptions that Simmonds and Kramer were making in the debate about Fuller's philosophy! I believe Tolly in Kolkata used to pay Rs 100 or so for the entire year. And then monthly. This arrangement changed recently to Rs 1 lac a month or maybe annually. I challenge you to get a membership at the Wellington Sports Club or the Bombay Gymkhana with any amount of money in 2026. These clubs are watering holes for those born with silver spoons. In Delhi NCR, the Delhi Golf Club and Delhi Gymkhana are out of bounds even for people who paid lakhs and applied in the 1980s. We Indians, frankly, deserve to be called pathetic, because members of these clubs use their access as a social filter. It’s disgusting. The irony is especially rich, considering that the British once had boards outside these very clubs banning entry to “dogs and Indians.”

I don’t come from connections, but have built enough connections through peers in engineering and finance that I can bank on them to bring in some small to mid ticket size transactions(20-50cr). To start, maybe no. The pay won’t be as good, even if decent, the learning will not be as much as a law firm and you’d have trouble moving later, if at all. Always better to start at a law firm, Tier 1/2/3 whatever that may be. But ofcourse, take it if no other option and keep looking to move for atleast 3 years of the start. Move then, better pay, better things you can contribute to the company too.

Club pays yearly rent of Rs. 1000. Expectation is that they will use it to create sports facilities for people in the locality. However, till date it remains an exclusive club and the public objective of providing sports facilities to public at large (because of which it is getting the lease on a nominal rent) remains unfulfilled.

Hence this! Fully endorse this move!

All these elite clubs have are on leased public land (which btw belongs to you and me as much as it belongs to a club member); and are paying far below market rate prices for the lease. Anything given below market rate should benefit the entire public. These gymkhanas should serve as sports centres for all the people rather than the rich (considering they are paying below market rate prices for the lease and have leased it for the "public" and the "good of the public", i.e., health).

As someone myself who Interned with a tech startup in Bangalore for 3 months, I would not recommend you to start with an In-house role. If you have options, definetely without a doubt start at a law firm as ultimately even if you want to get into an Inhouse role, your PQE of 2-3 years would allow you to start as a manager in a tech related in-house role. Otherwise, if starting your career at an in-house, you'll not only take long to climb up the hirearchy, but also limit your understanding of the transactions taking place by only focusing to one businesses needs. Thus, start at a firm and move to in-house with better pay and role after a few years of law firm practice.

Karan Thapar has been consistently writing articles against the BJP since they entered the Delhi gymkhana management a few years ago. But Delhi Gym and Golf Club have been monopolised by the Congress ecosystem and memberships dominated by Congressi netas, babus, defence deal fixers, journalists etc. Corporate memberships generally not permitted. This is why the BJP people are pissed off and even many elite professionals (outside the Congress ecosystem) don’t like the club.

The BCL has always been superior to the Cambridge LLM, but in the last few years, the Cambridge LLM has become an utter joke. I have been in Cambridge long enough to see the quality of students deplete by the year. You will find a nice cross-section of Indian law students that stops short of only Meerut Law College. There are people here who were not even in the top 10 of their undergrad cohorts, whereas at Oxford exceeding the top 3 is a rarity. It is quite fun though--more time to party, and academic rigour is optional, that is, you can exercise the option of not working and getting the degree or working and getting nothing in particular to make you stand apart from your two-hundred-strong batch. At any rate, if you did not get into Oxford this year, chances are that you never will, so welcome to mediocrity at Cambridge!

I absolutely agree. Ten years ago one of my batchmates became an assistant professor without even NET. He did a masters from an NLU and got the job. He said there were barely 10 candidates and he was the only one with a LLM from an NLU (tier 2). Today I have a PHD+JRF from a tier 1 NLU and I still haven't gotten a call back. Could you imagine !!

He went straight to teaching with just an LLM. I went through net,then JRF, then PhD and now I don't have anything to show for and he already has a 8-9 year long career. This is utter BS!!!

This should have happened long ago and yet nothing will change. There should be a cap on reservation hierarchy. People who's grandparents, then parents are civil servants are taking reservation. I mean come on now ! You've had two successive generations in the highest bureaucratic post in India and still you are taking reservation from the one who's a first gen. I truly believe, preference reservation should be given, especially in government jobs. So if you're a first gen, you should get the first dibs in reservation, then second gen and then third. After which reservation should not be given. Isn't this almost similar to a monarchy where the third generation is still benefiting when they've been ruling for two generations. Especially in Group A services ?

This is not abolishing reservation but spreading it to others especially the first generation who have not received the benefits even today.

As a 2nd year law student from a private uni at Bangalore, you should first look for internships at chambers rather than directly jumping into law firms with gen corp or disputes practice. After one lit internship, target boutique law firms in gen corp, few firms like almt, md&t to start with and then scale up and mail other t2's and T1's in Bangalore. This would be the ideal way to have a strong resume by your final year.

But it's extremely difficult to get a PPO or job offer from their Calcutta office. The partners have high expectations and justifiably so, because the team is lean and the work is sophisticated. So if your aim is to get a PPO, it is recommended to intern in their Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore offices where its rolled out quite easily.

Yes, ALL law firms shortlist candidates based on the batch rank. so yes your CGPA only matters, nothing else. Everything else is a point of discussion in the interview, but theres nothing a top 5 rank could not replace for a successful offer. So yes, keep grades super high and know to speak proper english and be super creepy to the interviewer
