If you want to teach,move outside India. Ideally, do a job for 1-2 years, get a foreign LLM with scholarship (by that time you'll have financial cushion as well), try to get PhD abroad with good LORs, don't return to India/return to fancy corporate law schools that are coming up.

For median you need to arrange the salaries in the ascending or descending order and then the salary of the middle most person is the median salary. As there are even number of people placed, the median would be (28th + 29th)/2

Hi,I’m a law graduate, was looking for jobs from past few months, started interning at a place with a niche area of my interest, later got a job in chamber (civil/ no niche/ general practice), should I keep continue with my internship in this field to actually build experience or should I start my job. Hes pretty much followed everything hes expecting of you in his career. He was a dedicated disciplined student, he did go forth and achieve a lot the university has to be proud of as an alum. He played cricket- he just didnt need to miss his work or ask for holidays for it. He did activism- again didnt need academic standards lowered for him. He did so all by balancing his time. I understand its hard- but being in the best law school in the country should be hard. It should be the hardest thing youve done so that youre prepared to be the best lawyers in the country. If you dont want that- if you dont have the drive- you should attend a more relaxed university and leave the opportunity to someone hungry for it.

As VC- hes what multipled your faculty by 300%? hes brought on several institutional collaborators for small and big research projects? Hes raised funding from alumni? Hes revived a number of what were defunct programs and journals and other initiatives and actually laid out a vision for where the university needs to go? In the last two weeks youve had professors from the best universities all over the world come to nls for like three conferences? do you think that stuff just happens? Do you think all of these faculty would have come to nls anyway without sudhirs reputation? Theyre not coming for you- theyre coming because they trust that he will build something worth their talent and labour.

I know students have short memories. Students who werent around for the previous VC's tenure can ask their seniors just how much of a tailspin the university was in when Sudhir took the reins and hes turned it around.

please name someone unqualified who has been appointed to an academic position. do you even know how hiring is done? there is an interview panel for every single position and people are scored on various criteria and a decision is made collectively by the panel- even for ad hoc appointments. For permanent appointments there are external interviewers and a much bigger panel that follows very strict criteria.

Atleast someone started a conversation on this. I don't know why these people glorify GNLU. That institute has horribly in terms of placement this year. I'm not sure if they're hyping up their PPO count but their Day Z was really horrible. Out of total strength (200-PPOs) only 20-22 people got jobs on the D-day, some of them received multiple offers so the number of offers is around 35-40

I agree, I had a decent rank and would have been easily placed via college placement. But my fear of not getting internships really pushed me to do better and get good publications and moots. Now I am much more hardworking and smarter than an average topper. I would say even with the toppers, good publications and great communication skills will come in handy in the long run.

Ironically, the last time the students protested in 2019 was because Sudhir WAS NOT being appointed. Then they went to Gopal Sankaranarayanan and asked him to intervene with the CJI. He reverted with a statement of assurance but told the students that he wasn't vouching for Sudhir, only forwarding their demands. Clearly he knew what this guy is about. Wonder why the SBA doesn't reach out to him as they did the last time around.

A law school's job is to teach its students, not to dance to the whims of a recruiter. Therefore, educational activities (teaching and assessment) come first, everything else comes afterwards. I don't know how this is even a question, or has ever been. Sudhir is showing the minimal level of competence as an administrator by making sure that this is no longer something which is up for debate.

You want ‘Harvard of the East’? Well, I think you are getting pretty close to Harvard of the East by Sudhir’s completely justified strictness on this point. You do know that the actual Harvard Law School’s Office of Career Services has gotten this (that classes etc. comes first) down in writing in their official recruitment policies? Even people there whose job requires them to primarily worry about students’ jobs in one of the world’s best law schools have understood this. See quoted extract from their regulations below:

Yep they've registered cuz day 1 in-house and alternative career options also open thru registering for rcc pool only. My friends aren't interested in firm jobs cuz they want time which in house jobs allow. For instance at the very maximum it was only trilegal that saw about 40 students filling for it. Rest firms saw lesser number of students applying. So if only 30-40 students apply for firm jobs, clearly 95 ppl wont be magically placed. They'll get the type of job they prefer in order to alongside prepare for upsc judiciary

No, median means there are as many students with salary above 20 LPA as there are below 20 LPA. Please learn some stats before making these claims. Trilegal offers less than 20. Of the places that you mentioned, only those getting TCs and KCO will get a salary of more than 20LPA. Which means 11. That still leave 56-11 -10 (SAM) = 35 people getting 20 LPA or less. Hence median is not 20 LPA.

Jodhpur is a sleepy town stuck in time. NLUJ is an ordinary institution by most measures. That it is in middle of nowhere only adds to the isolation. Campus life is prosaic and filled with average Rajasthani crowd (don’t believe - check the family background/domicile of the NLUJ students, especially those who graduated before 2016). The better ones join law schools outside the State. One upon a time, when Luthra was a force to reckon with, it used to hire in masses from NLUJ. Albeit unspoken but truth is that the selective hiring policy pretty much killed the corp and M&A practice of the firm. The brighter folks from other law schools left the firm one after the other because they could not put up with the average but arrogant lots from NLUJ.

Also, NLUJ students excel in PR - something that has also infected the GNLU folks.

Pointing out every single issue that the student body has faced in the whole "Sudhar era" at NLSIU-

1. Academics -

Low Cgpas, Arbitrary moderations - It is true that the passing grade for a subject was reduced and C and C+ grades were introduced but the passing criteria remains the same. Its essentially for every C or C+ you get in a subject you need to compensate by getting a higher grade in other subject. For example - For every C you need A grade to compensate as to maintain your passing grade points. This was primarily done to reduce repeat exams stress that administration had to face in a packed trimester system and there was absolutely no regard for the student body. On the face of it, this may seem like an ingenious idea but you couple it with arbitrary moderations, a policy that was not notified neither when is applied to grades is told, in such a system to a get a higher grade is extremely tough since there are only certain students who can get higher grades, on an average approximately 60-70% class is always marked between C - B+ grade. Teachers have gone on record to say that they are instructed to mark less and later moderation is applied to even those grades. It is extremely tough for students in their 1st and 2nd years as you are given way lesser courses to make up for a C or C+ grade and the same can be seen in the trends as this year over 40+ students got a year back at NLS in the first year. That's approximately 1/4 of the batch held back.

Attendance - What to say about this, in an already packed trimester based system, the admin's approach to attendance is rather satanic. There are absolutely no attendance condonations provided at NLS apart from medical condonation. You do any co-circular activities or extra co-circular activities, you need to miss classes. For an example, if you participate at an international moot court competition which usually lasts 2 weeks, you miss around 12 hours of attendance in a course, that leaves you with only 3 more hours of classes you can miss across the trimester, that is basically one day of class, imagine going on an international stage, winning your college accolades only to be told that the same caused you to get hold up for a year. You fall ill, that's your problem because medical condonations are given only in cases of (as quoted from university guidance note) "In view of this, it is clarified that medical condonation shall be provided only for hospitalisation or persistent and severe illness. " and you need to submit "Students who seek medical assistance or are hospitalized outside the University Health Centre, please get all relevant documents including diagnostic reports, medical prescriptions and Hospital Discharge Summary verified by the University Doctor, and submit the verified documents along with the online application within 6 days of resuming classes." Even when you do submit these documents with proper verification, this can be rejected by the AAD or UGC chairman arbitrarily as according to them its an academic decision and can be assessed by them only since according to them their opinion is much more important than a qualified medical practitioner. They are so stringent as to attendances that there are instances of people being held up for an entire year in their 5th year because they were short of 1hour of attendance in a course and their medical was rejected. That person literally had to come back after a year to attend 1 hour of class to get his degree.

Faculty - There is absolutely no contention to the point that Sudhir has brought upon extremely qualified faculty to the college, Young professors are great. Guess what though as a hypothetical just imagine a professor who has done his phd in Labour law, the same guy might turn up to teach you corporate law, all these amazing young professors often teach courses that they have no expertise in, its not about their calibre but often especially in junior batches profs take classes in subject they haven't even specialized in. There was a prof who specialized in health law but mas made to taught International Law and Criminal Law in two successive trimesters. Poor fellow Literally had to read herself and get taught before class and when often asked in depth doubt in class, she simply could not answer since her knowledge of the subject was limited to what she taught in her university several years ago. NLSIU is hiring anyone and everyone with International Phd and they are being made to teach anything and everything. Gone are the days when you would have nation's best academician in subjects teaching you. Also on a side note, once check the number of hirings from azim premji cohort of faculty and the same place happens to be our VCs last workplace, favouritism?

Academic rigour - For a top university its extremely important to be academically rigorous and Sudhir did bring in a lot of reforms but you need to understand how tough it is to survive in a trimester system. Approaches taken are also way one sided. When the whole chatgpt boom happened, the college decided to introduce a continuous evaluation scheme, wherein a 3000-4000 word paper you already submitted, you now had to submit 1000-1500 outlines as well, and multiple compulsory consultation to add to that, they wont buy turnitin and other software to catch a few who cheat but rather make students life tougher in name of academic rigour. Not only that even teachers cant cope up with this much work, they often take your vivas without even reading your projects. Being a professor at NLS is tougher than a corporate job at this point. Also at NLS the maximum percentage you can get is 90% which is at 7 CGPA, no one in the history of NLS even our great Rhodes scholar VC have gotten that, batch toppers are at generally 6.2 Cgpa, 99% of student at NLS are below 80% of marks with 80% lower than 70%. You cant write judiciary exams, MBAs, foreign LLms despite being in top 25% of your class at Top law school in country. Compare to other law schools, the grades you get in law school despite working 10 times harder than any other law graduates will always be lower and the world as a fact doesnt really know the mystic world of NLS's academic rigour, so you will be just seen as someone with poor acads.

2. Student Life at NLS - LoL what

Must have heard about strawberry fields or maybe spiritus or perhaps le gala when you were studying here. Gone were those days. There happens absolutely no college cultural activities, no real celebrations of anything, no fests, few things that happen only 50-60 students show up to it because literally student body consists of brain dead zombies now. Whatever few things that they do allow are subject to ridiculous conditions, like no events post 9, not even sports lol. They do come up with interesting concepts to sound more like fancy white unis like newly introduced COLLEGES, but that's also a façade. Any committee whatsoever when think about orgainising an event, they start getting nightmares because dealing with this admin is impossible. Sudhir did create lot of posts like COO, Chief of staff, SWO, Residence officer, people officer and what not but what these people do nobody knows because every one of them will send you to the other one of them to eventually come back to the one with which you started, believe me you would love SBI's functioning more, administration structure is so pathetic that a tier 3 city government office will seem more efficient. They have shit tons of committees also like Residence team, DCRL, ARC, you appeal to any one of them and they wont respond ever because they just work on a tactic that delay as much as possible so you wont have to solve.

As pointed out there are absolutely no fundings for any sort of moots, nego, debates. This has made things so elitist that same 50-60 students do everything, people despite top ranks cant take up international competitions because our VC thinks everyone has stacks of cash lying around their homes. They do pay for your reg fees lol (only reg fees, if it inclusive of things like acco they will go to any extent to only give the registration component of it) but getting it again is tougher than getting a loan from SBI. Funding is one thing, there is no support at all, people have literally given international moot rounds from garage sheds because university wont open up library for them or even provide a private space to prep. You can book fancy rooms in our fancy library through our fancy portal, but getting it approved takes more time than making a memo.

3. Infrastructure - NLS will buy you a fancy table to sit at in mess but will not give you a bed to sleep in.

Sudhir spends money in this college as if he is designing his pet interior design project. This year almost all master batches and most local residents were not given acco in university because simply there isn't any. Your perfectly fine room furniture, mess furniture, other furniture have been changed to make college look more aesthetically pleasing, we do have a very fancy library and beautiful garden but water coolers wont work, your rooms will flood in rains because of poor construction, there will be no drinking water or even water for days at end but there is a v fancy library because thats where sudhir poses for his PR. The university infrastructure cant handle the enormous amount of people we have started to admit. Money is still being spent on external beautification rather than fixing internal problems. They randomly throw people out of college to make space for others. Even to switch on ACs in class you need to knock 20 doors and only if the temperature is more than 32c that too at 26c setting, believe me we do have that policy lol. Committees literally have to pay uni out of their event budgets to book university property imagine.

There is so much more wrong with this college right now and almost everything that has been mentioned in this thread is true. NLS is going to the dogs. We have higher fees than any other NLUs now. Administration apathy cant be described in words. Please of you do consider giving CLAT go to NALSAR or NUJS, dont torture yourself, dont ruin your life.

Used to be great team but since last few years - it has bcom equally (if not less) “T” when compared to other places. . People just shout less but but but will over load you with insane work and gaslight your competence every time for the smallest of mistakes. So many people have left, you just cannot imagine. One of the main reasons is some highly inefficient sycophants taking senior positions to hog everyone 24x7, do nothing, demean others and make work place miserable. Such ppl have left this place unbearable to work.

Not from NLSIU. Just a humble fellow from another law school who doesn't know much about all this, but who feels that some of the attacks on Sudhir are deeply unfair, and who is scandalised that this site allows them to happen so repeatedly (a search of the archives will indicate the truth behind my words).

Who? SPM publishes like crazy and teaches well, Prerna is academically demanding but takes time to even mentor first years (I have personal experience), Padmini is a role model, both in her work and her activism and Sahana is genuinely one of the best teachers I have ever had.

There are people every year from working class backgrounds who (i) go to Eton and other exclusive schools on scholarships, after which they go to Oxbridge; or (ii) can't manage the going-to-Eton part, but go from state schools straight to Oxbridge. Such people would be deeply wounded and insulted to be told that their completion of an elite education while struggling in those settings because of their working class backgrounds somehow made them less working class, or 'not working class anymore'. I think Sudhir would be equally insulted, hurt, wounded and, if you were a student at his university, disappointed at such a malicious, below-the-belt attack. He is a man from a working class background who has achieved a hundred times more than what the received wisdom and the statistics say he should achieve, and continues to do that. Your ravings on this gossip blog aren't going to change that. Try achieving one tenth of what he has achieved, come back with proof and then we'll hear your lectures about how he is somehow 'not working class' or 'not working class enough' (I am saying we will 'hear' those lectures, not necessarily accept the arguments within them).

If you actually look at that infamous (for me it should be famous) India Today Conclave video where Sudhir called out bullshit, he specifically said that he '[didn't] want to talk' about what 'other universities' (which would, naturally, include Oxford and Columbia) were or weren't doing, because the hard-to-hear message he was putting out was that the nonsense that the other so-called 'university leaders' were spouting was just that, nonsense, and that if they thought that was the way to emulate Oxford and Columbia, that was wrong; as you are anyway not doing the job of learning from or emulating the best universities of the world correctly, please don't claim to be, and therefore, let's not talk about them, he said. I don't know what that indicates to a determined Sudhir-hater, but that indicates someone who wants to do the precise opposite of name-dropping to me.

Nobody is saying what MP Singh did was right (from the point of view of bending the rules). However, in order to get to a good state of things from an awful one, we sometimes need to do things that are not-so-good. In order to get to a place where an Oxford DPhil and a publication profile that leaves a certain amount to be desired doesn't mean you have the red carpet rolled out for you, you need to have first someone with an Oxford DPhil in charge somewhere good with an established reputation (criteria happily satisfied by NLSIU). Would it have been better, perhaps, if MP Singh to have told Sudhir to gain some more experience before putting out the red carpet? Maybe. But as Forsyth says, hindsight is a much less valuable gift to have, than the more precious and valuable one, foresight. Overall, therefore, it would be dangerous to regard MP Singh's actions as some sort of precedent, but I think it did more good than harm.

Completely missed the point. I feel so much sympathy for Sudhir, for having to deal with students like you, who can't even be successful at cherrypicking arguments and being disingenuous. The point I am making is that he does not come from an elite background. There. Expressed it in as simple language as I possibly can. Happy?

Universities and their administrations don't act in loco parentis to their students. That's not their job, and specifically not his job. His job is to ensure that the students who pass through that university of his are the very best practicing lawyers/industry professionals, academic lawyers etc. that they can possibly be. That might sometimes involve (i) telling students (and staff) what they don't want to hear; (ii) being strict; and (iii) not compromising on the essentials (in the language of a trade union for professors at UK universities called the UCU, not starting 'a bonfire of academic standards'). Tell me how he has failed on any one of these counts and I will listen. Yes, there was NLAT (therefore almost satisfying no. 3), but that was four years ago, and I think he learned his lessons from that; I can't recall anything else he has done which shows him reducing academic standards. If anything, he is clamping down on malpractice!

NLUO Grad here. The life is as good as you would expect in a Tier 2 college in India. Trust me it won't get better than this. Some plus minus may happen, also Individual experiences vary.

Regarding Admin: After the end sem exams in April for the graduating batch, atleast 45 students/180 had some kind of backlog. Admin conducted examinations of each paper remaining. Gave everyone a last chance to pass subjects. Without any fees.

Never got any attendance backs. There were scares but not one attendance debar happened. Atleast for 2019-24 Batch. The admin trust me is as good as it gets.

Two Biggest concern here could be crowd for the new batches, as 60-70% of them are locals. That sucks. If not for this, our Uni would be performing a lot better.

Hoping to see change for the better. Attendance condonation for moots, financial assistance to at least some aspect for activities, slightly less rigorous academics (our exam papers are significantly harder relative to that of other NLUs imho, but to a banal extent), and just a kinder, more receptive admin–these are bare minimum wants that I sincerely hope we can see. I say this as someone who has had zero personal issues with the admin.
