Lee Kuan Yew was the prime minister of Singapore from about 1959 to 1990. He was re-elected every time there were Singaporean elections between that timeframe, but I cannot answer with any degree of reliability as to his popularity with the people of Singapore of that generation. However, he was tough and did the following (among other things):

- Threatened to shut down Singapore Airlines if their pilots didn't call off a strike.

- While some may argue overreacting, a ban was passed in Singapore of chewing gum because someone stuck it in a metro door hinge which caused the door to jam, the train to get stuck and lots of delays on the entire network.

- Housing Development Board (HDB) housing lifts were fitted with an alarm system ordered by Mr Lee that made the lift stop if somebody inside urinated on the floor (as many did do ). This would mean that they would have to ring their flat's security/maintenance to be rescued, and therefore would be shamed into admitting this conduct.

As far as I can see, tough though it may be to swallow, Sudhir is being the NLSIU equivalent of Mr Lee. The comparisons are uncanny! Both are in positions of authority; both are lawyers; both lived in England for at least some time in their lives; both did very well in law school (Sudhir at NLS and Oxford, Lee Kuan Yew at Cambridge); both adopt a "cut the comedy" approach to life. If that means that some agenda-supporting or bitter student/member of academic staff within NLSIU is disgruntled and doesn't have the balls to conduct protest, there is no need to pay anymore attention to this.

Possible solutions for NLSIU if it wants to exit CLAT (my personal humble opinion, just putting it out for fun, nothing more):

- Go with NLSAT for both LLB and BALLB.

- Re-introduce NLAT (but in-person, this time) for BALLB.

- Following the path of increasing westernisation (1): Introduce LNAT of UK as the admissions test (but unlike Jindal, with meaningful cutoffs).

- Following the path of increasing westernisation (2): Introduce something like the old Cambridge Law Test that (as the name suggests) University of Cambridge used to conduct (before they, like Oxford, LSE, King's, UCL and Bristol) joined LNAT. Those tests actually used to be really nice, since they were fully essay writing-based. Really good filtration process. Ideal solution IMV (if you want to follow the westernisation path), NLS can conduct such a test on its own, instead of having to be part of a consortium (as it would be, if it were part of LNAT) and it could set its own test registration fees (unlike LNAT, where that likely wouldn't be possible).

NB: If the third or fourth solutions were to be adopted, exam board marks of 10th and 12th should also be taken into account (like how the UK law schools do), it's only fair. I don't think you can go the entire UK law school way of doing admissions test + board exam marks + SoP + recommendation letters (and in Oxbridge case interview), because otherwise, it would become a situation where the posh schools, whose teachers and administrators are accustomed to western systems, would disproportionately be successful in the admissions process.

NB II: Either of these four solutions would work to toughen standards, IMV. Not advocating for one over the other.

Ok - the title may make me sound old, but I’m not (trust me). Have seen this pattern with all the new joinees - hard work seems like a challenge.

Law firms were never easy, will never be. I love my weekends and my free time. Nobody wants you to work more than what is needed. But if, god forbid, I assign work post 7 PM (maybe a half an hour deliverable) the juniors have straight up refused to do it. None of the new kids on the block understand what a client facing industry requires you to do. They believe deliverables done in an hour (as the we prepared for our exams in law school) will have the same quality.

I’ve been frustrated with kids and have been doing their job myself. Thoughts?

I'd recommend you stick to LSR - working as a lawyer is unforgiving and the crazy hours never really reduce even in 10 - 20 years when you are (hopefully) more accomplished, and there are so many other professions out there where you can get more success without having to sacrifice time for yourself or family..

There was a time when CTIL had a lot of work on diverse subject matters. But that times has long gone. Most of the talented people have left and the only people left are those who use interns to get their own personal work done (Research Paper Research or College Applications) or who have no work. There is no Investment or Competition work at CTIL - they may claim to have investment work but trust me, they don't.

Easy ones for use - perfumes, watches, ties, scarves, maybe even a blazer (if you know their size). All of these come in various price ranges including sub 3k and can be ordered online.

More difficult ones - hobby and interest related stuff but for that you need to know the person well.

Don’t get your cat to Mumbai, especially if you currently have a lot of family members living around the kitty and if you have a lot space in your house for the cat to run around.

Change is hard for a cat, I moved houses currently with a cat. My cat didn’t eat drink for 2 days he was just hiding under the bed.

My cat is a senior cat so change in environment cause health issues too like vomitting, UTI, and diarrhoea.

There are ways you can move to Mumbai with a cat but the initial few months will be hard.

Think about it for your cat :

He is not in the house he was living for a year

The regular people he sees aren’t there

And the only person he knows in this world will be gone for 12 hrs a day.

You will miss your cat but it’s the right thing to do

If you still want to get your cat with you:

Join your law firm, look at your working hours and see if you have get time for the cat then afterwards when you go back home get your cat with things he plays with (toy, blanket) if possible with a family member too

So the cat is in a strange new place but it is comfortable seeing that his people are there too

A week or two of adjustment and the cat will do well

So, I have a cat since my law school days. So I can tell you my experience.

Cats are more active in the night than in the morning.

So there are chances that your cat will sleep through the whole day. Before I go to office I fill up cold water and some food out for my cat which he eats in the afternoon and I have an understanding with my neighbour aunty where she checks on him, his food and litter box once a day as soon as I reach home. I spent a good amount of time with him- running and trying to catching him, throwing paper balls for him to chase. So he is active, my cat is now 7 years old now so he prefers pats than play nowadays.

Cats are independent but they suffer from anxiety. For eg: when I started working my cat got deadly sick because there was a change in his environment.

As long as you can give them time at least once- twice a day they will be happy

On weekends try to play with your cat longer, sit beside the little dude while work.

I speak to my cat too. Proper conversations. I don’t know if that helps connect with him but to me it feels like he is listening.

PS: For my VERY VERY bad experience: if you are a non vegetarian or generally okay to prepare some boiled fish or chicken. One meal raw diet. Dry food is like giving your kid chips everyday!!

Remember if your cat is a girl she will be needed to be spayed and it’s an open surgery so you have to take one day off and 2-3 wfh for her.

Idiot, Sudhir isn't Lord Curzon. For his intellectual satisfaction, he doesn't need divide et impera. He is an established scholar and teacher. Tomorrow, if he decides to get in touch with C. Rajkumar because he has had enough, he can easily go to a place which pays him better (even if the students are equally toxic). And like Mohsin Bhatt, Jindal could easily be the lever to get some heavy and difficult-to-move doors open for a path to British academia (in his case back to British academia); TBH, we'd be happy to take him back, and could ourselves do with his type - his "cut-through-the-crap" way of working/personality is exactly what wee need (like you, but for different reasons).

I am from a not so good law college in Mumbai. I interned throughout my law school as attendance wasn’t compulsory and luckily got a good ppo, the one I wanted.

I didn’t clear clat and didn’t think Jindal was worth the money spent

so I had to go to a college like this

I did not have a proper college experience of living together with friends, doing moots and committee work, making friends for life etc

I was instead spending that time interning in offices with people older than me, feeling lonely.

It’s not like I don’t have any friends at all

I did make friends in other colleges by participating in extra carricular activities for which I’d travel to other colleges often and some friends from mine too

But it’s not like a full time college student experience

This affects me quite a lot as in adult life you barely get to make friends so I feel like I’ve missed out on this imp aspect of life

For those who have attended full time colleges, can you tell me of some bad things that happens over there or the not so pleasant parts so I can get a different perspective ?

As a student of NLU-D’29 I can completely attest to this statement. A number of talented students who would have ordinarily gone to Banglore are being compelled to go to Delhi leading to a significant brain drain and leading to record low cut offs. It is likely to be even less this year and the saddest part is we cannot accommodate everyone given our paucity of seats vis a vis NLS so a number of good students are losing out. There is quite frankly a misallocation of NLU resources to the wrong lot of students. None of us here in Delhi hope for a decline of NLS in such a manner and we would like to keep the healthy competition that has existed between the batches of the university since a while.

Do students have a say in the recruiting process at NALSAR? Recently, in one incident, few students, mostly liberals and others trying to climb their way out of their conservative predispositions, are shooting emails to the administration arguing to retain some professors they think are good (in other words, professors they like). Their argument:

a. If NALSAR is investing in these in-house profs by paying them stipend for their phd, they should have a preferntial claim to be retained if not regularised.

b. There have been instances before where integrated LLM-Ph.D students have been hired as assitant professors before completing their phds (and they have done phenomenal work).

c. Students claim that they must be consulted even though there is no positive obligation on the university (via UGC regulations) to consult them during the hiring process.

d. The last round of recruitments, as many at NALSAR claim, has been questionable. And, NALSAR has been bleeding of good faculties since Fuzzy's term was not renewed.

Thanks for sharing this anecdote. I find this to be true of many premier law schools. They preach equality but really they favour students from privileged and we'll connected backgrounds differently than they would you. Nobody is openly hostile, but your existence does not matter to them. There is always an attempt to show how these students are better while that may not even be the reality.

Looks like someone has taken Suits pretty seriously. No my dear friend, that aint true! In the real world, unless you land a job in US, nobody gives a damn about your degree. May very well land you a job with the law firms, but trust me it does not do any better beyond that. It gets worse if you plan to return India. The Indian market/clients are a totally different kind. Except for <1% of the top clients, rest are interested in heavily negotiating on the tariff that you send out to them marking "discounted fee". I have seen some of the top MNCs who pay more than USD 1000/h to our US counterparts, struggling to shell out USD 400 for the Indian lawyer (T1 lala). Its totally not worth doing LLM in US, rather consider EU/UK as they still have some bandwidth for "outsiders".

Honestly an ok team to join as long as you are not too ambitious and a little thick skinned. Pay is below other teams but the team doesn't have any major M&A work and is mostly doing outsourced BPO work for Baker McKenzie. You will get decent bill share and ok hours and grow at a slow pace for a few years.

I just joined a chamber and to be honest I joined it because i was scared of time running out and wanting to stack up on 'experience'. Same as last year. Gave both the papers. Same level of questions. Approximately 30 easy questions, including what could be found in passages and general questions. (Eg. Blackburn etc). And 20-25 difficult level questions. Rest are moderate which depends on the level of your preparation.

Last year we were getting approx 1200-1300 rank at 50 marks. I see the same happening. For PSUs again you need to comfortably get around 90. Let's see what happens, but in my understanding easy-modrate question paper.

Of all things, this seems like quite a silly discrepency. So let's get an answer: to which generation does he belong? Assuming he was 18 when he entered NLSIU as an undergrad, that would mean he was 18 in 1993, and 23 in 1998, when he first went to Oxford. That would mean he was born in 1975.

My poor fool, please study your issues properly. See what has happened in societies where they haven't tried raising fees. Take United Kingdom as textbook example. They have had a model of tuition fees whereby the absolute, hard, impossible-to-get-around maximum that a British uni could charge home students for any undergraduate course was £9,250 per year (the Labour administration in power is raising to £9,500). This was called the 'cap' on tuition fees. This amount of 9,250 was set in 2012, and remained constant until now (the fees for international students were not regulated like this). Now obviously, £9,250 in 2012 is much higher value than £9,250 in 2024. Do you know what that resulted in? It has resulted in a rediculous situation where the typical UK uni loses something like £2,300 for every British student it admits onto an undergraduate programme. Does this sound familiar to you? I would assume not. If the tuition fees hadn't been frozen, by one estimate, Brits/those who had resided there long enough to get Indefinite Leave to Remain and were studying at undergrad level would be paying £12,000 by now, if the fees had been allowed to rise in line with inflation. Do you know instead what has happened? Of course you don't, because you have no curiosity! What has happened is the Mamas and Papas of UK schoolchildren are inundated with headlines in their morning copies of Financial Times, Times of London etc about some unis having less than 30 days of liquidity, about "potential market exits" (which is the official Government regulator Office for Students (OfS) terminology for unis closing down) because of something like a 10% drop in applications from British kids (i.e., 10% fewer Brits want to go to university) and something like 23% less from overseas students, and of leaks of talks between VCs and ministers about mergers, course closures and so on. Do you think Sudhir might know all this? Do you think he might have just possibly, unlike you, read the expert commentary on matters of this kind written by people such as Sir David Behan and Sir Phillip Augar, the banker, both of whom have been in the leadership of the Office for Students (or maybe even just the Financial Times)? Possibly, do you think he might be on first name terms ("Philip" and "David" terms) with these two people who have given UK HE sector funding some thought, considering his own extended time in England? And do you think he may have just used his knowledge/connections to good effect, evaluated what he has learned about how other HE systems work/how things can go wrong/have gone wrong and made his decisions? You clearly have done none of these things, because from your comment, clearly you know nothing about higher education or how these things have worked. Why don't you study in more detail what I have described, study the Indian economy more closely and then express an opinion?

Fair enough, but a lot of that number is from so many students who have graduated from law colleges across the country that are often unregulated shams. Take a look at past years question papers if you’d like to, you’ll see that they don’t ask anything that requires critical thinking or analytical reasoning. They just ask you to answer from the letter of the law, and it’s a simple exam. As long as you have the bare acts with you, you’ll be okay. I didn’t even take most bare acts, just borrowed it from the person sitting next to me and there wasn’t a single doubt in my mind that I’d pass. You will clear it too, don’t worry. Take care :)

Have been working in a well-known litigation office for 5 months. The work pressure and stress is getting too much to handle now. It is now resulting in severe health problems. I can't take it anymore.

Absolutely true! Nearly all of NLUD Bo29 didn't get top 100 CLAT ranks simply because of the pathetic quality of the CLAT 2024 paper. While AILET 2024 retained its test quality, and filtered in the cream. Now CLAT 2025 repeats the pathetic quality of its question paper this year too.

It is evident that the passing-the-parcel model of consortium leadership is at the root of this rot. A mediocre consortium is injecting its mediocrity, and sapping the best. The top guns need to get out of it's cancerous clutches before the mediocre monster devours them all.
