I’ve worked at SAM, and seen clients rejected daily even after clearing conflict checks. They just tell the client they couldn’t clear conflict. SAM has a choice over who they represent and they exercise that choice daily. They chose not to reject this client. Says a lot about the partner’s ethics.

NUS was not built in a day. Bangalore and India is not Singapore. NLSIU achieved a lot vis-à-vis NUS or any international law school in few decades and with extremely limited resources. Look at its alumni, number of Rhodes scholars it has produced.

Indian corporates don’t want to modernize the Indian legal system. It suits them to keep it inefficient. They will borrow, but banks cant recover from them easily. India’s trading communities (The Gjjs, the Marus and the Sdhs) also have no interest in improving the process of justice. Amongst members of these 3 communities, honour forces them to respect inter-se contracts. Politicians do not want to improve the system, since they profit from the inefficiency, by helping those who can afford a bribe.

Interesting how a practice that was once regularly in the GAR spotlight appears to have taken a rather different direction. From what one hears, much of the current work seems to revolve around litigation management for a leading healthcare company and a pharmaceutical company.

There is also some curiosity about the nature of engagements being undertaken by lawyers within the wider team, including matters involving individuals and associations before various courts and tribunals. It would be interesting to understand whether these form part of the firm's broader litigation practice or are independent engagements undertaken with the firm's approval.

One imagines that several lawyers joined the practice expecting exposure to public international law, investment treaty arbitration and potentially PCA or ICJ-related work. It remains to be seen whether the practice's investment treaty business development efforts will translate into a more substantial pipeline of such mandates.

The Delhi office certainly seems to have the commercial potential to develop this practice further. Perhaps a more concerted business development effort across the partnership could help bridge the gap between the practice's international positioning and the work currently available to its associates.

I am ex SAM. Was there long enough that I care for the firm in a weird way. I understand many current and old hands raised queries about this and SAM management is actively considering not going ahead with the matter. Not great they picked up the brief in the first place but good to hear they got their dei game back on track after the backlash.

Not for the people creating the problem, perhaps. But for current and prospective associates, it absolutely is.

Of course it's written from a US perspective and that too from a pre-AI/social media era, but the core advice on how to study, how to organize your time, how to write exams etc is excellent and timeless.

I think at this point of time quality etc. can be kept aside and the one thing that REALLY needs to be addressed is the court pendency. IMO court infra and increasing judge count is the single most important agenda for this country. As a disputes counsel in a top-tier law firm, I can clearly see that corporates (domestic and foreign alike) are absolutely frustrated with the legal enforcement in this country.

It is deplorable that one of the most senior supreme court lawyers goes for a lecture to the SCBA and casually remarks that our (Indian) practice is by and large interim in nature (the fact that he is correct is even worse).

This can also be seen from the fact that in no other country does the supreme court counsel command the highest fees. It's usually the commercial court bar which is the richest. Maybe this fact goes on to prove that Kunal Kamra was right when he said our SC is basically a glorified arbitration tribunal.

Rest of the points are debatable policy issues which can be discussed at leisure.

I have always scored excellent marks in english subject till 12th college.But in so called nlsiu i have failed with 0.5 marks even i had a year loss. These so called nls professor useless person they themselves dont know how law works in practical. I think it's completely normal to outgrow certain friendships as your priorities and perspectives change. It doesn't always mean someone has done something wrong; sometimes, people simply grow in different directions. Being alone for a while can give you the space to understand yourself better and discover what kind of connections you genuinely value. You don't have to cut everyone off immediately, either. You can gradually create distance while remaining respectful. When I'm reflecting on life changes, even reading a free horoscope ▮▮▮ be an interesting way to explore different perspectives, but ultimately, your own feelings and experiences matter most. Focus on building meaningful connections rather than keeping friendships just to avoid being alone.

Further everyone irrespective of their experience is an associate there, only their salary changes. Its an okay place for freshers since they are very much into research and note ad brief making - the things first year associates got to learn the most. Post your 1-1.5 year get out of there ASAP.

Heard through grapevine last year how the management chopped off the ENTIRE bonus sum for a couple of junior partners and 2-3 associates and asked 2 junior partners to leave. 2-3 of the associates whose bonus was forfeited chose to continue in the team and this year after being passed over for multiple promotion cycles, they have been magically elevated. Big Boss makes a lot of show in his interviews about what he expects from his SAs or Counsels but in reality none of them have enough knowledge or soft skill to face clients. Only one SA (may now Counsel since she is like 10+ years into the profession) is great. She is single-handedly handling TMT work and is the real horsepower behind the likes of Rohan. This sentiment is apparently SHARED by top management in the team who feel frustrated comparing their own associate pool with that of their peer teams. But I guess, connection and 'loyalty' based teams will always be substandard for this reason. If there are relatives in the team, as someone mentioned here, then of course the conflict of interest is a no-brainer.

Fellow T-1 nlu person with a top rank and now working at a deadbeat law firm. Please don't rely on RCC to get internships- I only relied on them and ended up not getting placed. Please understand hiring has changed drastically and most places and you will have to start early. Competence alone won't cut. I was competent and yet couldn't make it to a T-1 despite a stellar profile because most hiring these days is nepotistic or based on 'other' factors.

as someone from NLSIU i think its fair to compare it with local GLCs over international law schools. Its not fair to see a rodent infested, construction debris-filled cement heap called NLS against THE NUS. Those are functional countries with respect for hard work, unlike NLS, which rewards mediocrity.

May be true…the team works primarily through connections. The SAs are always busy in politics and currying favours by getting their own connections hired. This leaves almost no space for anyone to be hired through merit.

If you’re an outsider, they don’t treat you well or fairly, or recognise any merit. That also explains a lot of incompetence and complacency within the team itself, especially at the lower levels.

Lot of t1 teams are hiring through PPO. Aim for internships with teams which have vacancy for A0 (tbh mostly depends on luck) instead of relying on college placements, unless you're in the top 10% of a tier 1/1.5 law school.

A tier 1 firm would probably only hire 80-100 freshers every year

neha bora having a toyota corolla is very different from a marxist in a law firm. in a T1 law firm, you're working for the most powerful people with the most capital in the world, helping them protect that capital in order to earn more. not to forget, the means that the clients of have accumulated this much capital is by actual exploitation and sometimes the worst atrocities mankind has seen (re: trilegal having lockheed martin as a client) - at that point, you're not a marxist, just a hypocrite.

i understand that for some, it is dire necessity that they work at a law firm, and them i still empathise with. but even so, i've seen more of people falling in this category choosing to take alternative career paths, than the most privileged set of nlu students who claim to be "passionate about public law".
