The big firm may have better long-term opportunities and name value, but the working hours are 10 to 11 hours a day. On top of that, I have a 2-hour one-way commute, so Iโd be out for around 14 to 15 hours daily.
The boutique firm is less known but has a 10 to 6 schedule. Same commute, but overall it feels more manageable and healthier.
Iโm seriously considering the smaller firm for better work-life balance, but Iโm worried I might be making a mistake early in my career.
Suggestions please

Step 2: get insurance (you will end up paying significantly more premium if you delay it)
Step 3: Divide your savings in two halves: 50 percent goes in equities (mutual funds + direct investing) and the other 50 percent in debt. Keep your eye on a few stocks (get professional advice as well) and double down on those stocks when the market crashes by taking out some of the funds from your debt portfolio.

And no, this is nowhere close to being the "biggest ever" endowment for an Indian university. That's irrational exuberance.

So based on that your sub rankings work.
If not, then how about cities like Istanbul, Rio, Mexico City, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Cairo etc? Does Mumbai fall in this category?
In your replies, do say whether you've visited or lived in the above cities!

But ten years of being in academia not one person has asked me who my parents were or what my caste is or anything like that. This aspect of the profession is more open to first generation folks than any other.
1. A successful woman partner in a law firm sank into depression and alcoholism because she couldnโt get married. She only wanted someone who was her financial and intellectual equal, but such guys were taken. So she waited and waited until it was too late.
2. Another such person was divorced and childless. Her husband dumped her for someone younger and more attractive. She was hugely successful, but very depressed for lack of companionship and family. She eventually chose to adopt a child and raise the child as a single mom.
3. Another lady adopted cats and her life revolves around them.
Please donโt dismiss the womanly need for child-rearing and companionship because of what you come across in feminist textbooks and TikTok reels.

Any advice on whom I should consider interning with? Thank you!
Trainee for lack of a better word is just a long term intern who has a high probability of getting converted.
I also started recording instructions on email / mst to ensure that there is no confusion.
Reason 1: Lifestyle Neglect.
The Instagram optics are carefully curated โ Euro trips, brunches, designer hauls. But behind the filters lies visible burnout. Erratic routines, stress-lined faces, and the unmistakable toll of an overextended, undernourished life. A Pilates reel doesnโt cancel out cortisol.
Reason 2: Emotional Intelligence? Missing in Action.
Some of the lowest EQ Iโve encountered has come wrapped in the gloss of professional achievement. Reading cues, taking โnoโ with grace, knowing when to exit a dead conversation โ basic stuff. You think Delhi boys struggle with rejection? Try saying โno thanksโ to a 30-something litigator. Suddenly, youโre the clueless peasant who dared to turn down royalty. Believe me โ I have the receipts.
Reason 3: No Off-Switch.
Especially in corporate law โ where work and identity have fused into a single, exhausting persona. Dates often feel like diligence calls. Legalese over linguine. At some point, I started wondering if Iโd accidentally walked into a strategy meeting.
Reason 4: Hypergamy โ and the Fallout.
Yes, it exists. Letโs stop pretending it doesnโt. Itโs a wrecking ball that no one has the courage to ackno- until itโs too late.
Reason 5: Misandry Dressed as Empowerment.
Independence is great. Strength is magnetic. But thereโs a growing trend of casual man-bashing being passed off as feminist sass. Itโs not edgy. Itโs not evolved. Itโs justโฆ tired.
And hereโs the part no one wants to say out loud: many of these women donโt actually want a partner โ or certainly not a male one. What theyโre seeking isnโt intimacy, but affirmation. That theyโre smarter, sharper, more enlightened than whoever sits across the table. And if he wonโt flatter, submit, or play along โ heโs swiftly labelled โinsecure,โ โmisogynist,โ or โjust not enough.โ
The truth? Some of them would be far happier if everyone โ including their well-meaning friends and family โ stopped trying to match them up. Let them own their solo arc. Itโs perfectly fine to be a cat mom, dog mom, or cause crusader โ provided you actually have the time, energy, and emotional bandwidth to care. Itโs not a failure. Itโs just a choice.

Try and stay in touch with your grad school, post-grad and doctoral professors. Majority may ignore you, but the ones that do reply, do try and stay in contact. Propose working together. Also keep expanding your contacts. Every single opportunity, right from PhD to postdoc to teaching and research projects are built through connections and recommendations.
So please do not just focus on teaching and publications. Keep in contact with people around and they will help you build your career well.

Yes, it is that bad
a week down, there was a selection for HSF organising committee and i think one prime selection criterion in a team was typing ๐ i may be beat the bests today in that but it was certainly not the case then, because i had no conditioning of laptops. at the end, youโll learn if you use laptops regularly?
Thereโs something quietly alarming about how youโve framed this: a whole group of accomplished women in law are being reduced to a kind of curiosity because they havenโt โsettled downโ by their late 30s or 40s. Why is that even the lens? Do we pause to dissect the life paths of single men in litigation? Do we ask whether theyโll adopt or become โdog dadsโ? No, we just assume theyโre focused, driven, or havenโt met the right person yet. The same grace doesnโt seem to apply here.
And the list of โreasonsโ you rattle off like demanding hours, intimidating men, high expectations, physical appearance, really just blames women for their own singleness in a hundred passive-aggressive ways. It completely ignores the structural and cultural double standards that exist in law (and society). Maybe some of these women didnโt want to get married? Maybe they had partners but didnโt see marriage as essential? Maybe they did want it and life just worked out differently? Or maybe theyโre tired of being told their life is incomplete unless it follows a specific, socially approved script.
Also, the idea that these women now need to pick between IVF, adoption, being a โcat mother,โ or throwing themselves into social service... itโs honestly quite patronising. Their lives arenโt some backup plan in motion. Theyโre already full and complex. Fulfilment doesnโt hinge on marriage or children for everyone, and it certainly shouldnโt be the only frame through which we assess womenโs choices. If you're genuinely curious about gender patterns in the legal profession, thereโs a meaningful way to have that conversation. But this post? Itโs steeped in subtle (and not-so-subtle) sexism. Might be worth sitting with that discomfort a bit.
Legal fraternity is a small world, very closely knitted. Things spiral out like a wildfire. Being aware of it, and bypassing the trouble is the best way out.
Ofc doesn't apply to everyone but on a general scale even if 30% of the batch strives for excellence (whatever you consider that to be) there is a intrensic requirement for atleast 40% to do something, hence even if the rest don't do anything, the minimum standard is maintained.
Not the best model for sure but it's what we have at the moment, i believe.
You need to understand the salary one gets paid in a tier 1 firm, is a fraction of the billings you generate for the firm, sometimes in a single month you may generate 4-5x your yearly payout to the firm.
I type extremely fast. Both on laptop and on the keyboard. I recommend you learn full hand typing, extremely useful.
Use www. monkeytype (dot)com to practice.
I always recommend using an external keyboard, preferably a mechanical keyboard with brown switches for an excellent tactile typing experience. Fewer errors, faster typing and fingers feel like they have had sex. I recommend Keychron Keyboards and Ducky Keyboards, beware, they are an expensive rabbit hole though. Cheers, all the best!!!
dont worry though everything will happen in time.
