I have worked as associate in firm with capital markets team.i want to switch to PE and VC practice.
How possible it is
But you cannot say you want to switch because of the hours - that won't fly during the interview, once you spend a little time in the new firm, you can be honest about it. You will have to say that you think PE / VC and M&A work is more interesting since it is a bespoke, it has more exit opportunities, you will more opportunities to directly interact with the end clients, etc. etc.
Anyone interviewing you who is mature, which should mean most partners, will realise that this is an extremely valid reason to choose a practice area.
A common mistake to make when one is young is to get into a practice area which doesn't have many exit opportunities outside of law firms, such as investment funds, capital markets, etc.
The primary factor would depend as to what is your PQE, usually changing of the practice areas isn't difficult for the first three years of the profession, the sooner you change the better it is preferably do it by the end of the first year.
Now when you are formulating your CV, draft the same in such a manner that includes the work oriented towards GC Role and then start applying to as many places as you can. Remember the chances of getting through is not that easy specifically when you are switching practice considering the firm usually require someone experienced so get ready for the rejections that might come in the way and simultaneously applying to other places. Usually the chances of getting through depends upon as to how desperately the team is looking to hire resources. Apply to Tier 2 firms also as chances of switching to different practice is more in that case scenario (assuming you are from NLU and Tier 1 Law firm)
