Depending upon the firm, salaried partners (10-12 PQE) may or may not be required to bring in work. It depends on whether their equity partner is a big or mid rainmaker. If it is the latter, then minimum expectations are you bring in revenue that covers your own small team’s cost (inclusive of bonuses) along with a 30% overheads cost. Ideally in a team sizing of a salaried partner and a couple of SAs and As, this would mean 3 cr to 5 cr.
Bringing in the work is both a mix of your abilities as a good lawyer and your social skills. You do not need to be a second generation lawyer (although it helps). Connections are built through friends, college mates who went in house, through introductions by existing clients to their other GC friends and of course through regular business development.
In order to reach this, by the time you are 8 PQE make sure you have at least one if not two dependable juniors who will help you execute the work such that you can take out 2 hours in a week to develop your market skills and connections. These are the juniors who you too will lead in the future when you become EP and to whom you will hand over part or your entire book as you grow.
It is not easy but it is also not as difficult as it may seem. You have to balance your work execution, client persuasion and team management along with whatever semblance you have of a family life. The real difficulty is scaling up to the next level, i.e. a 10 cr book.
For non-M&A teams, you have to figure out the right mix of taking up a couple of large mandates and smaller but voluminous matters to reach your targets. Start this exercise at 7 PQE and work towards it religiously. You will be able to achieve it.
If you have other questions, please feel free to ask. Its important that this conversation needs to be had in an otherwise self oriented profession where personal ambition/greed trumps healthy team and succession planning.

Now tell me which NLU (barring NLSIU) matches up? Jindal too is far behind.
Why is this???
https://nishswish.substack.com/p/shadow-twin
It was Aprajita Lal. Different people.
Get your facts straight.
Is it because of their selective hiring of creams of NLUs and the highest pay among all T1 OR is it because they dont participate in DAY 0 and are highly selective in terms of giving out PPOs?
want to know if it is worth spending 25k
I am currently practicing independently
This shows even law firms prefer business schools (national institutions), in this case IIMA, over state universities (NLUs) to focus on legal leadership initiatives. Think of it - even the so-called Tier 1 NLUs are not considered good enough for this innovative development.
It is also amusing how sanctimonious you sound while attempting to correct other people’s grammar and language, even as you make elementary semantic errors and commit logical fallacies. You openly admit that you are largely oblivious to Indian politics, yet attempt to pronounce authoritatively on whether particular judgments favour the Union Government. Sit this one out, please, and do 'consider' taking back what you said.
Also, the HR does not understand M&A/PE/VC. She only understands Gen Corp and gen corp includes labour and employment, TMT, Real Estate and all other allied practice areas. So practice area in SAM is mostly on luck.
I’m specifically looking for a senior who is willing to teach, involve me in matters, and give me genuine exposure to drafting, court appearances and arguments. I’m not looking for a role where I only assist with research or paperwork I want to learn litigation from the ground up, take responsibility, and eventually be entrusted with handling matters independently.
If you know of any good advocates or chambers in Mumbai who are known for mentoring juniors and providing meaningful courtroom exposure, I would be extremely grateful for any leads or recommendations.
Thank you!
How much time did it take for yours?

The reality couldn't be further from that. It’s just endless "fake urgency," zero work satisfaction, the savings aren't actually what I expected, and there's honestly very little respect in the field. Most in-house counsel are basically just email pushers and contract redliners for most of their careers until reaching a senior post, and hitting the pay celing is a reality. Unless you happen to be in a super exciting industry, the standard 9-to-5 is just endless same format agreements, office politics or clearing other advocate's bills.
Looking at how the litigation market is shifting right now, with all the new regulations, AI, and data practices coming into play, I really feel like it's time to start something of my own, grind out 1-2 years of honest work, and finally build a practice of my own.
I just want to know if anyone here has made the jump back from corporate to litigation? What was your experience like, and how rough was the transition? Would love to hear your thoughts.
India is a reasonably high-growth economy that is not high-employment. Which means that the growth that is happening is not inclusive. Most people are not participating in growth and therefore they are not producing it.

I applied through the website and got an acknowledgement email, in a couple of days I was invited for an interview and within 2-3 days I was informed that I have received the internship.
PQE 1 folks took the interview; it wasn't very structured, and honestly, the way they conducted the interviews left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't know of such people for a reason: because they aren't any good. If you don't have the substance and you don't know how to articulate it, and if you don't have common sense, nobody can help you. They can only mislead you. I didn't bother with anything like this, and yet got quite a good outcome.
I do have an interest in TMT, particularly in Media Laws. However, most of my peers who are doing very well have been striving towards a career in General Corporate or Dispute Resolution. Is pursuing my interest in TMT particularly in Media even worth it? I am afraid since it's not really a vast field, the opportunities are way less, particularly for someone not from a good college. I don't want to invest my final year in something which has no scope for me in the future.
Please suggest if pursuing IPR in small firms would be a better option instead.

I may not know a lot about Indian politics, but what I do know is that this guy is a darling of the right wing and called young people in India struggling for jobs and a basic standard of living a name I will never use. He also dismissed accusations of police brutality without any form of due process. That's all that any person needs to know. Plus, he got some thugs-turned-gentlemen that work at our high commission here and have therefore adopted a veneer of respectability to bully the event organisers at my uni into pre-selecting (in advance) only certain students to answer questions after his speech, rather than ensuring that a democratic, random selection of students who raised their hands was done. Even if I don't know a shit load about Indian politics, I know enough Orwell to remember what he says about keeping on the right side of the party line.
Also, when did I say that it's an offence for people I don't like to "exist in the world"? Idiot rich kid I may be (I dispute that characterisation by the way), but I at least understand basic English. Please learn to read. Go back to your school, do pranam to your teachers, ask for forgiveness for wasting their time and admit to them that you weren't paying attention when they were teaching basic reading, then ask them to please repeat the lessons for you. Existing in the world doesn't mean being legitimised and lorded by educational institutions. It literally means what it says on the tin: going about your life freely, expressing your views without fear of state reprisal, associating with whom you will, etc. If he comes along and speaks at some student event at the uni, it's their problem. They want to listen to bad ideas, I don't care. But this is the institution giving him a stamp of approval by calling him to their graduation ceremony. Totally different. Also, when did I say I liked any other CJI at all? You're doing a remarkable level of extrapolation. Sign of a TLC education in India? Reliable sources indicate NLU graduates wouldn't make such breathtaking logical mistakes. If he has the right to his free speech, then so do I and all the NALSAR students protesting against him.
Please prove, with facts, citations, statistics and evidence, what this guy has done to further the rule of law in India and I'll consider taking back what I said.

Looking to intern with and possibly get hired into teams that specialise in PE/VC. I want to make sure that I'm able to maximise this opportunity to learn the most I can from the best teams/partners out there.
Please help a fellow transactions enthusiast out and drop the names of Firms / Partners / Counsels / PAs who are best at what they do – Both Tier 1 and Boutiques with Tier 1 work.
Thank You!
I have secured an internship with SAM Delhi. I had applied for the M&A, PE/VC and GC areas. However, my acceptance letter did not specify which practice area/team I'll be working with. Upon inquiry, I was told that I will be allotted the practice area based on my preference on my date of joining – although I am a bit sceptical of this. Anyone who has interned recently, have you had a similar experience? Were you allotted a team in your preferred area at the end?
Give us a break! First stop bunking classes; cheating in exams; fighting with teachers for reducing syllabus (lol); plagiarising projects; AI written projects; begging for marks to pass; insulting non-nlus; using contacts for internships where your contacts trump meritorius students (uncle syndrome learnt); asking for lineint marking; failing because of substance abuse; getting debarred..... anything but not reading and studying. Meh!
