Some context: I am in a decent NLU, but had very little corp related work experience. I was earlier sure that I would do policy work but decided extremely late in my law school that I would want to try transactional work. Anyway, cut to now- I am in my last year doing a corp internship where I am struggling even with basic tasks. Everyone is hostile and I am having a hard time understanding if I am stupid or if the people around me are being vicious. I feel I am being assigned tasks which are way above my mileage- meaning tasks which are performed by A0s and SAs. I have been having a hard time, feeling like an imposter, messing up basic tasks too because I am also being assigned tasks which I have zero familiarity with and people just sprout out directions and then berate me if I ask for clarification saying things like aren't you in your last year? Shouldn't you already know this? They also throw things which at me which they are not able to solve and are quick to throw me under the bus. They keep negging and then are quick to ask about my mental health. I'm having so much cognitive dissonance because on one hand I feel they want me to adapt myself to a steep learning curve (so that I get accustomed to this life), on other hand I feel they are being nasty to me because they get some peverse pleasure out of this. I have never been this under confident in my life. Can someone help me understand what is happening? More context: This is a Tier 1 place and despite me performing poorly on almost all assignments they continue to assign me work which is way above my pay-grade (I am not being paid) and my current capacity. My question is if I am at fault, how do I adapt to the pace of this team? For all my bad experience, even if I don't convert, I am learning a lot, learning things which other interns don't even get to learn until they start working. On the contrary, if this team is indeed unreasonable how do I respectfully push back and maintain my sanity.

Well it is hard because being an attorney and being a marketer of oneself are two different things.

1. No one taught you how to market yourself to get clients in law school.

2. Corruption is rampant - I know of at least 15 to 20 instances where the client-side asks for kickbacks to refer legal work and only allocates work to the highest bidder.

3. You have to be lucky or in the right circles (acquired by birth or marriage) to have a pre-existing relationship with, or get a warm introduction to someone that can actually be a high paying client.

4. The poor SPs that pitch to clients also get burned because those that they've pitched to expect infinite free consultations but never really want to pay. Those that do pay do so poorly and expect you to drop everything in your personal and professional life if the need arises. They will also shop a quote and switch attorneys for Rs. 5,000, sometimes less.

And millions of other reasons that I can't quite remember right now.

BOTTOM LINE: Why bother with all the aggravation? Just bill and get paid a fat sum to execute until the market is saturated with more of your kind. Hopefully when that time comes, you've built up a nice fat retirement fund and can finally spend time doing things that you love.

Was there in June and have heard of similar strength of interns in July and August from my batchmates. As an ex-first time intern I tried my best but my team had 3 other nepo kids (I was through RCC) and the team had no work at all. Ultimately, was not given a callback despite being diligent because of lack of assignments from the team, and whatever work we had, was distributed among the four of us. Very sad state of affairs.

Azb if you know your preferred practice area and want to stick to it, CAM if you want to explore, they have an associate training program wherein you work with different practice areas for 4 months each, although upper management of AZB is slightly better than CAM, that being said you probably can switch after a year or two so if you want dedicated work experience in one practice area go for AZB, otherwise you'll get like 4 months in GC, 4 months in disputes, 4 months in ipr (just an example allocation could be different)

So is that the amount needed for a basic upper-middle class life, with some modest savings? Thus, accounting for income tax, a salary of 9-10 L a month for two people and maybe 5-6 L a month for 1 person?

What's interesting about the Print article is that it points out that India once had a liberal party as the main opposition, with 44 seats in Parliament: the Swatantra Party. It perhaps died because the voters of that party shifted to the BJP, but the BJP is also practising the same socialist and reservation politics, so maybe time for a Libertarian Party once again?

Regarding IIULER Goa - Once I was there (for PhD) but I resigned from there when I came to know the truth. You can even surf the internet (I prefer to check authentic websites/governmental documents) to understand what IIULER really is rather than all cooked up stories! Anyway, I can make some points very clear to you,

1) IIULER is not an NLU (National Law University)

2) It is not a Government University/Government-Funded University

3) IIULER joins CLAT Consortium illegally by violating the Bye-Laws of Consortium of NLUs (Refer it from the official CLAT Website)

4) IIULER is a Private University but they try to brand it as a Public University

5) IIULER is not owned by Bar Council of India. IIULER is owned and managed by BCI Trust - PEARL FIRST (BCIT-PF) which is a separate and independent body that is not a part of BCI (Refer document countersigned by BCI Secretary in the official BCI Website)

Why I discontinued from IIULER (PhD)

1) They did not follow UGC PhD Regulations, 2022 (If it is not followed, your degree will be challenged later)

2) Even after 10 Months of commencement of PhD, they did not conduct Course Work Examination (which should really be conducted at the end of the first six months)

3) No Stipend/Fellowship were given to Scholars (even for JRF Holders of the batch)

4) They did not admit anyone as Full Time Scholars (I repeatedly requested to admit me as a Full Time Scholar since I have resigned my Job as an Assistant Professor (Law) to join IIULER). In their admission notification, they stated that they will admit as Full Time Scholars

5) Since I was not admitted as a Full Time Scholar even after 10 Months, I lost Scholarships/Fellowships for doing my PhD and the worst part is that, I resigned my Job as well for this!

6) IIULER doesn't care about UGC Regulations as even the then Hon'ble Vice Chancellor violates that by acting as Research Supervisors for PhD Scholars (No one can be a guide, co-guide or supervisor once that person crosses 70 years as per UGC Regulations)

7) Faculties are changing rapidly. When I joined there were 10 Law Faculties, but 5 of them resigned from there in 2023-2024 and 1 more in 2025

8) Due to word from Vice Chancellor, APRO and PG Coordinater, I even took an apartment there to do my PhD as a Full Time Scholar (They will not provide Hostel for PhD Scholars and they told me to took one in Jayaram Nagar itself so they will arrange the mess facilities for me from the Hostel), and I paid the Apartment Fees for 10 Months! But not even a single day, I was able to stay there since they don't adopt me (or anyone) as a Full-Time Research Scholar

9) When I tried to resign from there after 11 Months, I got admission in another Famous University in India for doing PhD, IIULER does not provide me Transfer Certificate or Migration Certificate, so I was not able to join for PhD in the other University since these are mandatory (Now, I got it from IIULER after several legal fights and explanation from Higher Education Department but anyway I was not able to join for PhD then since IIULER did not provide certificates on time)

10) Even the Vice Chancellor, Faculties and Administrative Staff deceive everyone as IIULER is a Public University (phone recordings are also available). It's so disgusting to deceive people and students (they even deceived me in the initial Doctoral Interview also as a Public University and whenever other people call and enquire with them!)

11) More than 6 times, I visited many authorities at IIULER to discuss the issue regarding the PhD, fellowship, Coursework problems and violation of UGC Guidelines

12) We didn't even get an ID Card from IIULER!

13) We didn't get any single Database/Remote Access after paying India's highest fees for PhD!

14) I paid Rs 1,35,000/- (as fees only!) for one year and they offered nothing in return (even not conducted classes properly)!

15) As per UGC Regulations, PhD Coursework is a 12 Credit Course (which means 12 hours lecture per week that too in offline mode). While IIULER conducts only 23 Sessions (1.5 hour each) through Google Meet (online) in the whole 10 Months still I was there and additionally a five day Research Colloquium (offline). They didn't even care about the existing UGC Regulations or standard of Doctoral Degrees!

16) There is no Administrative Officer in IIULER like Registrar, Pro Registrar, Pro Vice Chancellor, Controller of Examination, Assistant Control of Examination, PhD Coordinator or even those personalities as instructed by UGC in Higher Education Institutions for the betterment of Students!

Finally, "it is your personal decision to join IIULER or not!"

Be rational in putting across your views. Sikkim is a state with limited resources, and people in the hills face their own unique problems, which are often different from those faced by people in the plains. Roads, medical facilities and accessibility to essential resources are difficult in Sikkim. Every state deserves inclusive growth. NLUs are not only for placing students in T-1. It is aimed at promoting the overall development of legal education in the state. In future, even the students of Sikkim NLU will eventually get placed in T-1. Just give it some time. Resources should be distributed to all states equally. Similarly, the quality of legal education is also a concern. Power cuts and roadblocks are recurrent issues. Not all students cry for T-1.

Most terrible if this comparison is being made in the first place. Its like comparing Indian economy to Pakistani and having a feel good about it, when comparison should be against stronger nations. Meaningful Legal AI deployment can only happen as a secondary layer, i.e., on top of an existing robust database. Established players like LN or Manupatra can lead here. Anyone else is just selling you a shoddy wrapper with the only actual code being a model router. Every single solution in the market today is an MCP with a shitty ux wrapper on top that charges you an arbitrary amount of money. I am from a Tier 3 NLU, maybe the best one among them, but I feel really sad about the condition of Tier 3 NLUs. These universities have not developed at all, and the VCs of these NLUs are just incompetent. They have been in the same state since their inception.

According to reports, my NLU has not even received a single rupee from the state government. This is the situation for most Tier 3 NLUs, and even some Tier 2 ones. We should call for the nationalisation of NLUs.

I am Third year student at a T3 NLU. Till now i have done 6 Internships so far with experience of Disputes (at District and High Court), IPR and Tech Policy at a decent firm with good tier rating but still not have done an internship with T1 Firm. When is the right time for me to start with assessment internship (i know it is quite early to begin with at this stage since i am aiming for corporate) but look forward insights on how to begin so that i am well ahead since i don't really have good grades when it comes to intermediate (its decent but not top notch) and batch rank is in the mids with average grades. I am scheduled to do an internship with a good corporation's legal and compliance team for the month of December and my next scheduled internship shall be in the month of May/June. I have done numerous recognised Moots as well (not able to finish at higher stage though) and have done courses from T1 NLUs

Looking forward to guidance on how to proceed with May/June internship and when to go ahead with Assessment Internship

Because of my own experience with Jindal students, which has included:

1. A pretty smart guy I know leaving Jindal as an LLB student to go to one of the Russell Group unis in London to do an LLB there instead. Not just because of that uni's better "tag", nor because he wanted to practice in the UK, but also because he realised quite early, he said, that Jindal's education provision was unserious.

2. A Jindal student not just using privilege to get a job in India, but being profoundly lazy and unserious even when once they had been given an opportunity (this was someone, BTW, who was a neighbour of ours, whom my mother tutored in Chemistry as favour to the person's mother to prevent them failing 10th grade board exam in that subject).

3. A third Jindal student, this time in one of my LLM seminars, not knowing basic concepts of IHRL that the teacher was treating as assumed knowledge and checking that we should know, sort of as a Chemistry teacher might check if you know basic Maths before teaching you ionic or covalent bonding.

4. The mother of a fourth JGLS student in my parents' acquaintance/friend circle in a metro city saying (based on the kid's experience) that her child's law school jurisprudence curriculum was difficult, when I know for a fact (from other reliable sources and LI discussions about jurisprudence teaching) that that isn't the case.

Seems like these experiences are neither unique nor isolated, from what I have heard. If you are smart enough to navigate your undergraduate degree in a way that makes you look good on paper (ie, you have a good GPA/CGPA/what the British would call "degree classification") (without necessarily working awfully hard at your studies), if you have the right privilege cards to fill the CV with nice stuff (good university-facilitated internships, research assistant positions etc) and if you play your cards right in terms of writing genuinely good personal statements and having professors who give you genuinely good references, it is certainly possible to get into even a strong postgraduate law programme like BCL or Harvard LLM. But many there who possess more privilege than they know what to do with go to pieces when the rubber meets the road. Therefore, their mere presence doesn't tell the full story. It tells me, at least, just that they were smart enough to perform well according to the expectations of their (average) undergrad uni. Their attitudes, the actual knowledge they have, what they end up doing after their fancy degrees (languishing in Britain on their graduate route visa until there's no option but to go back? taking advantage of parental networks to skip the line of competition for Indian (or for all we know even foreign) jobs and not even making the most of those opportunities? or genuinely putting that privilege to good use to make the world a better place?) all are much more revealing, IMO.

A young ex-NUJS prof, now teaching elsewhere, was an acolyte of NKC and also a TMC supporter. His support probably had less to do with ideology and more to do with this selfish motive of obtaining helpful references and scholarships abroad, but the consequence was that this teacher brainwashed students(many of whom have now graduated) into supporting NKC. Now those students realise they were conned.

Bottom line: Don’t support agendas of teachers. Just fight for the institution’s prestige and better facilities for students.

The above replies are obviously authored by a bunch of bygone equity partners who will now be busy fabricating timesheet entries for time spent on forums like this. The truth is that the client relationships (if they belong to the EPs in the first place rather than being institutional relationships or a firm) are sticking with the EPs simply because they make it their life's mission to deny SPs/RPs any client face time or credibility. Trilegal has taken a large number of interns for October. In the Delhi office alone, there are around 40 interns, while the Lower Parel office has 36. There are also interns in the Fort and Bangalore offices. In both Delhi and Lower Parel, interns have been asked to come to the office only twice a week, with the remaining days being work-from-home. I’ve heard that Trilegal is shifting to a PPO-based hiring model, but having around 80 interns each month still seems to reduce one’s chances of getting a callback.
