Honestly, this is for the best. US LLMs (with the exception of a Tax LLM done post JD from specific law schools) are not regarded by the US market as a "real" law credential and US law firms recruit almost entirely through JD summer associate programs. While ad hoc hiring outside the traditional summer associate track does occur, and very few LLMs land roles with law firms through campus interviews, the overwhelmingly vast majority of LLMs do not. And the ones that do nearly always have top tier LLB credentials from their home countries and significant work experience in top local firms in practice areas where skillsets are considered transferable to the US context. US law schools treat LLMs as cash cows for this reason.

Now, if one's objective in getting an LLM is to get bragging rights, and one has the resources to do this, then that's one thing. And, in some cases, an LLM can be parlayed into a position with a US practice in non-US markets (e.g., London, Singapore, HK, etc.) although the chances of this happening are highest from a small selection of the T-14 schools (not all T-14s are equal and this is far more true for LLMs than JDs). But, if one's objective is to get a US role with a US firm, the odds are extremely slim and with recent proposed changes to the US immigration regime this may be difficult even for JDs.

To sum up: all that glitters is not gold. Just my 2 cents.

Excellent perspective. To this we must add the following (for those not persuaded that the law firm pathway is the ideal career for them):

Academic recruitment is practically impossible in the U.S. as well without a U.S. JD. Their unis have law PhD programmes called SJDs (or Doctorates of Juridical Sciences), mainly designed for foreign lawyers who took their legal training abroad. This is because the U.S. way of doing things is that suppose someone wanted to become an academic in law and philosophy, they would get a PhD in philosophy (not law) and a JD, which is a terminal degree there. So even though a U.S. LLM (or participating in the course work/credits equivalent of one) is a requirement to get into an SJD, that was unlikely in the extreme (even before the Trump regime) to lead to a U.S. job; now, nothing short of impossible. Even great scholars like NLSIU's Shyamkrishna Balganesh (now at Columbia), with Oxford BCL + Mphil kind of credentials under their belt, had to do JD to work in the U.S. (in Balganesh's case, for example, his JD (which he got after Oxford BCL + MPhil on the Rhodes Scholarship) is from Yale).

Trump likes to shoot bullets in the air. The bad thing is that he has started to shoot them at 90 degrees right above his head. He should keep up the good work, and one day he'll realize the value of contributions of students from countries like China and India and how the US can't function properly with only people who have hamburgers and football fields as their measuring units.
