You sound like one of those CLAT aspirants who says NLS or bust lol. IIM L and K are genuinely decent, and qualify for tier 1.5 at the bare minimum, even if not in the league or ISB/IIM ABC. However for Indore, the less said the better. The point here was not to disparage IIMs either, just to point out that ISB is also on par, and more in tune with international standards and requirements. I attended the LL.M. programme at NLSIU last year. Believe me and just choose NLSIU. The quality of the classes and the feedback that you will receive on your written work is easily the best in our country. The core courses for our batch were taught by Rahul Hemrajani (Research Methods and Legal Writing), Sidharth Chauhan (Comparative Public Law & Governance) and N.S. Nigam (Law & Justice In A Globalising World). You will not get a better combination at any other law school in India. NALSAR is a distant second on this count, with only Prof. Sitharamam Kakarala (who was earlier at APU) being a serious teacher who engages with LL.M. students. The quality and range of elective courses is also much better at NLSIU.

There are proper bands. 14.5 for fresher. And work culture is what you would expect of most corporate firms. Long hours with huge learning curve. Attrition is low. Partners are good mentors. Of course, there will be good and bad moments from time to time while at work. But they are far better than a lot of the T1 firms. They recently hired the disputes partner from ELP and are looking to expand organically.

I gave CLAT PG this year and I'm hoping that I'll either get NLIU or NUJS. I've kept NLIU over NUJS due to its smaller batch size and the formation of a Recruitment Committee. Now I know I shouldn't expect any placements it's just that the NLUs below them don't even have a RCC. This is something I just took into consideration even if my main aim is not campus placements.

Hello, I am currently in my 5th year. I was initially planning to prepare for the Judiciary, but the three-year experience rule has put a spanner in my plans. I wanted to ask whether litigation work as a retainer in a law firm is counted under the three-year judicial experience requirement?

Also is working as a Law Clerk in the NCLT or any other semi autonomous Judicial bodies counted? Or is only law clerk under HC or SC judges counted?

I also looked at State Public Prosecutor exams but looks like they aren't held annually and the next set of exams are 1-2yrs later.

I'm deliberating what my best choice of action is. Should I join a litigation firm or try applying to Gen Corp teams? I reckon the actual work involved won't be too difficult to learn minus the hectic schedule. But then I'll have to close Judiciary as a career path.

NLSIU batches have graduated in the recent years with a bigger size than the traditional below hundred cohort. Unfortunately, their placement hasn't seen any expansion like you have spoken of.

NLS students don't get any physical externship opportunities given their highly demanding schedule, so incumbents should not be told that such things happen.

As for the marking disparity, that's still very real. If a teacher teaches one section and frames questions for 5 sections and also marks them on that question, then obviously there is going to be disparity, since only one section will be truly aware of his expectations. When all the teachers do the same, you may argue that the overall disparity also gets distributed, with every section suffering in the process, but it's not really a mathematical calculation. So disparity will remain. But bigger universities or TLCs also have had the same issue traditionally.

I am fresher with 4-5 months experience in the banking and finance team and I wish to change my practice area to general corporate. I want to stay at KCo only and make an internal shift if possible. I know this option exists but am not sure how many times it has been exercised successfully.

Though the TMC remains favourites to win, their win probability is decreasing day by day. It may be 50-50 when the elections start. Some key factors are at play which were not there in the last election:

I think you will see the power brokers at NUJS being very quiet for the next few months. The action will begin only after the results come out. If there is a change, some will switch sides and some will be removed. If you are unable to find a job in your preferred practice area, explore alternatives in the meantime such as clerkship or a chamber to start earning and then make a move when an opportunity arises, don't chase an ideal job or a perfect practice area for now.
