I hate to break it to you but there is no formula to go about this. If you're fortunate enough to have any alumni in your team, do reach out to them and ask. I wouldn't recommend shooting DMs to multiple members in your team about this, especially before you start working with them. Try to get insider information from previous interns and connections. Often times, no one will tell you explicitly that they are hiring since they're not authorised to make such claims, and they'd typically like it better if they had interns motivated to work hard and not demotivated ones who know they will not get hired irrespective of anything they do.

I'm a final year student and considering pursuing clerkship under a Judge. For SC I think the process is quite straightforward but I'm not too sure about HC especially. Also, how helpful is interning with a Judge for this? I do plan to pursue an LLM abroad but that seems a plan quite in the future and rn m just trying to do disputes - so is this not the right choice for me rn?

AO Mistake

In my first year, I was asked to follow up on a matter on daily basis to track its listing for hearing in a particular court. Saw the listing and still sent an email saying not listed (copy pasted from last email - what a rookie mistake) :P

Seniors got to know early morning - I guess through the Client, and I got yelled at badly and got fired :(

Ten years down the line, learnt a lot from all such mistakes - now a Partner at T1. So fuck yeaahhh :)

Seniors of LI please share your experiences with correcting the mistakes of an A0. Please also if you could share how you think A0s can get better at their work.

I'm often sreprimanded for mistakes most of which are usually made when I'm confused about something and do not want to disturb my senior by asking them up every 30 minutes. Sometimes, I'm certain that I'm completing my assignments in the correct way but then later I'm confronted with my mistakes.

I want to be seen as an associate whom the partner can rely upon.
I lose my momentum after each setback then it takes at least a couple of weeks to get the confidence back.

Other A0s here, do you also experience this? Do you feel lost too? Like you don't know anything, constant fear of getting fired or getting threats of being fired, miscommunication as to what the end deliverable will be, missing small things, idk, please share your experiences.

6 months as an A0 and I feel dumb as if I am growing and then coming back to where I started. Getting reprimanded weekly for everything under the sun (drafts, emails, following instructions to the T, not doing the work on weekend that I was asked to take up the next wednesday)

I was interning at a T1 firm. The partner of directly gave some work to me, he is a very prominent & successful partner of that firm,(he is head of that particular practice area in that firm) moreover he also has a good reputation in T1 NLUS and various other areas. He was evaluating me and showing interest in me(maybe) by discussing my CV as he is expanding his team. Now regarding that work I did some really stupid mistakes and later, due to some technical glitch of IT staff of theirs( I took assistance from IT staff when i was facing a problem) the same work got sent twice to him. When I entered into his cabin(note- its a big think to enter into his cabin and directly talk to him - you need to take appointment from his manager 1first) - he got extremely angry ( until then I had not realized that the file got sent twice to him) - he kept arguing with me and I was so shocked and taken by surprise that I first tried to defend myself but he was not ready to listen( justified as he is not required to know the problem which I encountered and ideally should receive proper work) - then he opened my file and OMG I HAD DONE SO MANY STUPID AND SILLY MISTAKES WHICH I COULD NOT EVEN FATHOM, THAT HOW CAN A PERSON DO THAT - THE MISTAKES WERE SO STUPID SUCH AS FOR EXAMPLE I WROTE 'THERE' INSTEAD OF THIER' - AND I DID SIMILAR MISTAKES EVERYWHERE - HE KEPT HIS CALM BUT STILL GOT ANNOYED 2-3 TIMES IN BETWEEN THE DISCUSSION - He said some words to me during that discussion which I will not share but they still often revolve around my head. Then again we discussed the same work after editing and he seemed happy and gave me a very specific change to be made to the document. I WENT TO MY PLACE AND REMEMBER CHANGING THAT THING and shared it with him. He called me the moment I shared it after skimming through it AND I REALISED THAT THING HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED - IT WAS A SINGLE LINE ! - I did not know what to tell him in that encounter and I do not even wanna remember that convo. After internship got over I got my full body checkup to see if there is some deficiency which made me do that stuff (like remember changing and actually not changing). (Later I got to realize that he usually gets very angry at work and says a lot of similar stuff to interns, moreover his own associates keep leaving the firm because of his behaviour.)

My senior partner had once tried forcing me to participate in BW legal but I had refused because I didn’t want to be in the same league as their other participants. I told him I would rather try for reputed rankings or forums. I got a lot of grief from my senior partner for going against his decision and thereafter he made sure the firm didn’t recommend me for reputed rankings either:/

The firms having large team and money minting practice in white collar crime investigations, advisory and defence work are primarily AZB, Trilegal, CAM, Khaitan and to some extent Panang & Babu.

Only firms to have comprehensive capability are AZB & Trilegal where they have all skillsets and experience, both on investigations and advising/defence. AZB is strong in Mumbai whereas Trilegal is strong in Delhi. These two firms mostly do international inbound work. Domestic clients mostly are cost conscious and will go to Khaitan or JSA types, where the billing rates are almost half.

I got a decent rank to get into both the colleges. Earlier I was inclined towards NLUJ (legacy, peer quality etc)

but after interacting with seniors from both the colleges, GNLU is as good if not a better bet.

the academic environment is very relaxed, corp outcomes are good, city life's better a lot of freedom to pursue hobbies and other endeavours, 2 month sem break

cons: after comparing profiles of both the colleges, NLUJ seems to be the outlier - top journals, top moots, excellent adr culture and a slight edge in Int'l placements and academia

apart from that, they also get single rooms in NLUJ but that no longer seems to be true since the batch size has increased (this may also impact employment opportunities)

NLUJ academics is too hectic, there are classes even on alternate Saturdays and tests happening every week

On the other hand, I don't think any other law school has academics like GNLU - No mid sems, less class hours, no mid-sems (with some subjects giving ec activities as evaluative endeavours)

Being a partial dropper from MNLU-M, i dreaded sitting in class , and faculty from both NLUJ and GNLU seems to be similar.

I'm currently inclined towards GNLU on the assumption that I will make judicious use of the freedom I get there

But if that's not the case, NLUJ still seems the better bet

Hi mate, I'm a person who actually made a team change possible at A0 level a few years ago, at KCO. Is it risky? Yes. The only reason I had the balls to do it was because I was offered a cushy job in the niche area I actually wanted to work in. With that offer in hand, I went to my partner and had a candid conversation about how I absolutely could not see myself working in that particular area at all. I also had an opportunity to take on some of the stuff relating to my preferred area in my erstwhile profile, and accordingly, I had a minimal connection with the desired partner and team. The partner told me to check with the equity partner and the new partner was not against me for this — but do keep in mind that I had actively built the best billable hours and reviews on my record amongst all the freshers I knew back then, before I made this leap of faith. Essentially, noone should be able to question if this is because you are lazy or can't commit to something. I also had a demonstrated interest and aptitude in the area (both before and after joining the firm) I wanted to jump into, and all those things together made it happen.

My advice? Find a partner who admires your skillset and hard work beforehand, and then reverse engineer your way from there. Go to the HR only as a last resort. And have viable backup options before you say those words aloud, and if it takes you a year to get there, then so be it.

So you are saying that if the VC of a university gets changed, the course curriculum would change? Goes to show your immaturity. Any change would require new curriculum to be approved by the governing councils and would not be retrospectively applied. If BSc students wanted corporate roles, then they should have joined programmes more suitable for that. Nobody is limiting you anyway. Read whatever you want, intern wherever you wish. The existing faculty are not supposed to drop everything else that they are doing just to cater to you.

Graduating in 27. Good law school but very mid grades or worse. Have done t-1 internships in the past, but don't look like they'll work out. Had an internship interview at a t-1 which went terrible- I could barely answer.

I don't even know what's going to happen. Market's bleakness is freaking me out, and I just lose an opportunity in it. I need to study quite lot these coming months but everything still seems so uncertain.

Look at the discrimination in this way. The BSc syllabus is heavily skewed towards forensic and crime-centric subjects. At one point, this emphasis may have seemed defensible given the academic direction then in place (READ NKC Reign). However, now, won't it be worth introducing a stronger corp–science (BSc) interface? You cannot limit us students to a single career pathway, and many BSc students want corporate roles. The relevant faculty cohort (with actual research and experience) already exists on campus, diverted to other courses in the meantime.
