We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.
Therefore, in using the site, you must agree to do your best to uphold these community guidelines.
Note that what you find here is written and moderated by anonymous people on the internet.
Therefore everything you read here is very likely unverified, rumour, speculation and/or downright false.
In continuing to read anything here, you must therefore agree not to take anything you read here as factual and that you will exercise due caution, diligence and common sense before acting on any information you may come across here.
You also agree to report any inaccurate or malicious comments with the buttons. Moderators take action within 24 hours, as required and appropriate under law.
Our full terms and conditions apply too.
Do you solemnly agree to all of the above?
2. Create sub-folders using client name followed by matter name. This will come in handy to not have 6 sub-folders called "General Advisory".
3. As soon as you get a few mins (travel, waiting on calls, smoke breaks, waiting for elevator etc) - start (1) flagging emails that need your attention; (2) shifting them to the relevant folders id you dont flag them.
If you want to be a really good team member use different color flags to mark what your team (even if partner) needs to respond to - so that you dont pass on the buck and relax. Some may say this is their expectation - but right now I'm focusing on you not them.
4. End of the day - spend 3 mins to check what emails are still on your inbox and flagged because they need to be addressed.
The above assumes you've read all emails to know what need your attention and aren't expecting "@xyz" only to tell you what needs your attention.
If you can spend 2-3 mins on sorting mails every 3-4 hours, you should be good.
The attendance policy is messed up.
THE PLACEMENTS OMG! it's bad. Like, really really bad. The placement cell WhatsApp group "forwards" Internship opportunities via LinkedIn.
There are like, 2-3 known firms that have approached us for placements and they are also not T1s.
The placement data on their website is also not "accurate".
Please save the hard earned money of your parents and choose a college that values it's students.
Better pursue LLM, then litigation and have Happy Life forever.
JC, RRI and DN are outstanding attorneys. JC, in particular, is miles above whatever playground gossip youโre pushing. Honestly, if you threw shade any higher, the IMD would issue a pollution alert.
As for your diagnosisโadorable. People leave firms for all sorts of reasons. Bigger outfits like CAM, SAM, Trilegal or Saraf offer more autonomy, a wider client base, andโbrace yourselfโmore money. I know, shocking revelation: people like being paid. Who could have predicted that? In-house roles offer real client-side insight, better hours, and occasionally the radical concept of sleep. And plenty of lawyers have started doing the unthinkableโpursuing entrepreneurial ventures or boutique practices. Outrageous behaviour.
S&R isnโt built like CAM, SAM, Trilegal or Saraf. They donโt chase every client who walks in waving a retainer cheque. They take work they can actually deliverโand deliver well. Most mandates are handled by RS, SB, JS, and occasionally JC, VVR, RI and RRI. The whole place runs like a corporate-law chamber with capital-markets superpowers and the occasional โletโs sue someone importantโ for cardio.
They did try scalingโhired too many, elevated too many, and discovered that scaling is hard (or perhaps- not for them). Naturally, bonuses dipped, frustration rose, and people left. Itโs not a meltdown; itโs a correction. Losing good fee-earners hurts, sure. Replacing them is work. Losing someone with a big book would hurt more. Much more. Not that youโd know.
And hereโs the best part: itโs their firm, not yours. Yet here you are on LIโonce a news site, now basically Reddit for lawyersโlecturing people who donโt even have time to open it.
Do better. Ideally somewhere people canโt see you!
2. Ask seniors of Client's name, or see how they have created folders.
3. Learn and set a specific type of saving the document (ex- YYYYMMDD - Client's name - document name - final/revised/clean/tracked).
4. make client vise folders on outlook.
Apparently, people are being asked to leave especially in the litigation pratice.
I possess prior experience.
The pay is pathetic, however, the work experience you gain and contacts you make is something which cannot be ignored in this line.
Or you can fizz out and settle for a life of absolute mediocrity.
Just remember when youโre crying in your merc, happy people in their Honda will not look as happy to you.
Since I have gone in-house my health has improved substantially and am personally much happier, and I am able to do all sorts of extra curricular activities.
Makeout Spots: Tarun sir's cabin, All lobbies near faculty cabins in Admin Block, LH Museum, Both side stairs on Admin Block, Guru Bhavan and Shishya Bhavan Washrooms, Benches.

Dont know anything about in house.
Past ICAI president. Runs a good firm and very reputed in the tax and accounting world.
Except a few companies - Amazon, Google, Meta, Adani. Nobody else wants to hire an anti trust lawyer. They would prefer a law firm instead.
For in house roles. Best practice areas are -
M&A, PE and VC
Commercial Contracts
Compliance
Labour and Employment
Technology, Media and Telecom
Banking and Finance
Mumbai offices of both firms. I am really grateful for both opportunities, but I have to choose one as they are in the same month.
Thanks!
For years, leadership put the old guard on pedestals while overlooking the others. And the pattern shall always continue. Laterals may not be the center of the universe, but many of them at least have a soul.
The OGs who are left, however, are a different matter entirely. No one wants to work with them. The selfishness, the whisper networks, the constant undercurrent of petty drama..itโs all become unbearable. Instead of rising to the moment, theyโve shrunk into insecurity and superiority theater.
With multiple partner exits, the firm is at a point where honest self-reflection isnโt optional : itโs urgent. They need to reckon with who they wanted to be and who theyโre actually becoming.
S-N-R needs to face the truth: who is truly building the firm? who would you want to sit at the table with? They need leaders with soul and integrity, leaders who can unite, leaders who can uplift. Drop the OG-tainted glasses, look clearly and act decisively.
Otherwise, good bye the TRIo- LEGAL is not for you!

You're being detained because admin didn't show up to classes or you didn't? Too busy with garba organisation it seems. You were required to submit keys before you left, and you did not (while many kids did).
How is any of this the NLUs fault? You guys should move to NLUJ or NUJS and see what actual tyranny is. GNLU has made you too soft
Briefs are not the only indicator of success--You obviously are not aware about the practice of filing through juniors!
Fees; do you even know any senior in the last round of designations who charges more than 1 to 2 lakhs.
So you stop barking and certificate selling!
20 L per hearing almost confirm
OMG
Litigation is better, where 40 lpa is a cakewalk.

Khaitan interviews are usually CV Based. You should know everything that you have mentioned on your CV. Additionally, you should also know the basics of the area you have applied for.
Are there any vacancies?
Dear Sirs
Kindly stop dillydallying, vacillating and fantasising. If you applied a semblance of the effort you put into this post, in your day to day affairs and assignments, your seniors would not need to treat you like irremediable dotards.
Kindly note that further useless prevarication will result in your termination with extreme prejudice.
Yours always warmly

These have been coupled with constant dress downs from seniors. Everything else in my life has effectively stopped. Gym, friends, dating - Nothing. I can barely manage to eat meals that arenโt ordered on Zomato at 10 PM.
The worst part is that Iโm doing this to myself. The culture is toxic, yes, but Iโve internalized it. I feel guilty taking a Saturday afternoon off. I check emails while brushing my teeth. Iโve become the problem.
So I reached out to a senior from my law school who went in-house 2 years ago. Heโs now at 7 years PQE, making around โน40 LPA at a decent MNC, and he told me that the work-life balance is incredible. Vacations are actually disconnected, no emails. He has hobbies. Friends, family, etc., heโs in touch with everything and sleeps 8-9 hours everyday.
That said he mentioned all his batchmates are making โน80L, โน1 Cr+, and some already have secondaries in foreign countries. Meanwhile, he will probably top out at โน60-70L in five years. His increments are shit as well.
He tells me that he will not recommend his path to anyone because if anyone can survive the grind for even 10 years and make partner or counsel, theyโre set for life- financially and reputation-wise.
He told me that heโs just not in that race anymore, you know? But heโs too happy to be a bystander to join back in but doesnโt wish it on me. In his words, I can strive to be at a level where he could not and I should not join him in the stands but keep running.
And now Iโm more confused than ever.
Iโm miserable. Iโm failing at my job. My mental health is in shambles and my physical health isnโt far behind.
But this senior who seems genuinely happy is telling me that Iโd be an idiot to follow his path because Iโd be leaving money on the table and capping my career growth?
What do I do?
There is a different kind of thrill when you play a sport for your law school, when the crowd shouts your name while you are batting and the opposing crowd sledges you which once a while is so funny makes the whole stadium erupt in laughter. And there is a deep, steady satisfaction in completing an event you have organised for a committee, watching it come alive after days of planning. All of these experiences are worth having. They are what make law school beautiful.
At least till your third year, you should try to experience everything, and in that process build an all round CV. It will be far more fun, and far more storyworthy, if you do it like this.
But from a placement point of view, firms care only about grades and a bit of technical knowledge of corporate law and that's about it. So take a pause and ask yourself, do you really want to define your entire law school life only by placements?
Let's see how this fairs. Remember the suit you're filing against are the people master in it.
Now the question is how will he navigate this? Because there will be pro-BJP people entering the governing body and finds will be at the mercy of the government. My guess is that he will build ties with the JDU and LJP, which are seen as secular parties and don't conflict with his ideology. So he will invite JDU and LJP ministers for lectures. This outreach will protect him and CNLU.
But it will be interesting for folks at NUJS who think that a saffron govt will bring back glory days in campus
So you guys believe that the children of an SC IAS officer deserve reservation but the children of a GC peon or driver don't??
2. Yes, you obviously need to have an all-round good CV.
3. Paradox: An all-round "good CV" cannot be a "good CV" if it doesn't include good grades (higher than above average).
Neither Delhi nor Mumbai.
Current pay is 40 LPA. Fine with any number above 20 LPA.
Iโve done litigation internships. Got great feedback, my seniors relied on my first cuts which were filed. I liked going through the files to find arguments to craft and do research on the law. It was exciting. I like the fact that my seniors had control over their time, had vacations, but more importantly, they had ownership of their work and the money they made.
Dadโs a lawyer and Iโm thinking of moving to litigation given that it flows more naturally to me, and I cannot find myself interested enough in corp law work. Iโve thought about this, and I donโt think I can do this long term.
How is litigation in a city like Mumbai or Delhi? What are the growth prospects? What makes young lawyers choose corp law jobs (apart from the money)?
Moreover, if there are folks who moved out of law firms to do litigation (either in a firm or chamber) how was it like? Would you recommend moving to a firmโs disputes practice first or directly to a chamber?
TIA
Do they earn a lakh a month, maybe more? Thatโs useful pocket money!
P.S. I mean, income from views, follows and likes only, not endorsements.

Addressing a programme "India and the Living Indian Constitution at 75 Years", BR Gavai opined that children of an IAS officer can not be equated with the offsprings of a poor agricultural laborer when it comes to reservations.
