I became a lawyer at 27, became a corporate lawyer at 29, and started working in firms at 30. If I can do it at 27, you can too. Just try for a good college that gives internship options and work your ass off in those internships. I would advise against a drop, but it's your choice.

MNC banks like HSBC are tier 1 when it comes to work life balance. Some of the Indian ones are good enough but can get taxing at times. I've heard one of the two Morgans is bar WLB but this is not confirmed news for me. A few are almost as bad as law firms (especially NBFCs, fintech startups and some funds etc.), but none of them will regularly eat your weekends fully. Growth plateaus after a while but when life throws work life balance at you, you can find other ways to fuel personal growth.

First get off social media cold turkey. Best decision you'll ever make. No insta, no Facebook, nothing. At best keep LinkedIn for job and career stuff. Avoid watching reels and shorts like it's the plague.

You like doing human things with humans. Focus on that. Don't let AI slop ruin your vibes.

For the anxiety thing, try a few minutes of meditation in the morning followed by pranayama or breathing exercises and yoga. This really helps. May sound like uncle advise, but it helps slowly and surely. If you still feel it's not helping or if your anxiety is interfering your day to day life, please see a mental health professional. Let the professionals give you solutions. Try Rockethealth or Amaha or other reputed online platforms if you can't visit physically or don't know who's good in your city. Internet can't fix your anxiety or your depression (get this formally diagnosed and treated please. It's a term thrown around recklessly).

Lastly, excercise at least 3x a week. Excercise gives you free anti-depressants. Don't discount the importance of this please.

I am currently working as an A0 at a Big4 (joined as a fresher). The pay (at par with Tier 2 and close to Tier 1), work-life balance, culture, and overall perks are quite good, and I have more than enough time for myself (unlike my friends in Tier 1). However, the work feels largely clerical and administrative, with very little application of law. As a fresher, I want to build strong core legal skills and eventually move into a Tier 1 law firm or a substantive in-house legal role. Many of my colleagues have moved to bulge-bracket firms like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, where the pay is excellent, but from what I see, the work there is also fairly administrative and not really aligned with a traditional in-house counsel role. At this stage, I feel my law degree is not being fully utilized, and growth and hikes are relatively slower compared to Tier 1 firms(A0 to C3). I would really appreciate advice on how to upskill, build the right profile, and plan this transition. When is the right time to switch, and what should I focus on right now? Please advise.

Sorry mate, wish I could help. Just dropping a note here to say that whatever you have heard about foreign profs offering such opportunities to Indian students at Indian unis doesn't reflect my experience. I attend a Russell Group uni in the UK and such opportunities, when they come up, are almost exclusively offered (if not always) to internal candidates within the uni itself. Not saying it doesn't happen - perhaps profs at my institution are an exception in their insularity levels - but your language seems to indicate a belief on your part that this is a relatively common practice. In order to give you something as realistic as possible based on my knowledge, I just felt the need to problematise that understanding of yours (if it exists, on which I may be mistaken), because I don't think it is right.

Depends on how frugal you can be. If you can save 80% of your post tax income, you can retire by 45. Remember, you can’t get everything. Either choose to spend more or the luxury of retiring early or score a foreign law firm job or marry rich. Now don’t say “ek early retirement Toh main bhi deserve karti Hoon”. The entitlement of Gen Z is crazy. Also avoid ok boomer. Think of something new maybe.

I am in my last semester, unfortunately couldn't clear my PI for day zero and now I am stuck. Had some interviews but the firms ghosted. Barely any firms are coming, I keep getting rejection emails from wherever I apply for an assessment internship. I’m a final-sem law student graduating in about 2 months. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive any PPOs and was rejected from one assessment due to vacancy constraints. I currently don’t have any corporate law offers.

I’ve been offered a traineeship with a reputed company in a legal forensics role, which I’ve accepted for now. However, my long-term interest is in general corporate / M&A work, and I’m unsure about the crossover.

I wanted to understand:

1. Is there any real scope to move from legal forensics into general corporate/M&A later?
2. Will starting my career in forensics negatively impact future corp law opportunities?
3. Should I continue with this role while applying elsewhere, or would it be better to exit early and focus solely on corp law roles?

I recently qualified the UGC NET for Assistant Professor and have a few interviews lined up. I wanted some guidance on what would be a reasonable salary expectation to quote.

For context: I hold a B.A. LL.B. from a private university (well-known but not among the top tier) and an LL.M. from a top NLU. I don't have any UGC Care/Scopus Publication.

The current opportunities are with relatively lesser-known private universities.

Would appreciate any insights on the pay range I should negotiate for at the entry level.

Do you even know what these fields are? International Law (assuming you're referring to PIL) is very different from arbitration. How have you already pigeonholed yourself? What about NLS makes it that much better according to you? As an NLS student, yes, we're fantastic. But nothing is lost if you go to NLUJ.

I am an A1 associate currently looking to switch firms. Could you please share insights on the best Tier 1 M&A / General Corporate teams in Delhi NCR, particularly those with strong exposure to M&A, PE, and VC work?

Key factors for me would be quality of work, work environment, learning opportunities, and compensation. I would also appreciate guidance on the best way to approach these teams for a lateral move.

For context, I have around one year of experience at a Tier 1 firm. Would it be difficult to make a switch at my level?

NLUs like NUJS, NLUJ and GNLU will give you exactly the same career prospects as NLSIU or NALSAR will these days, maybe NLUD too. If you're wondering whether to study law or management, then that's a different call. Management from a top IIM will certainly help you earn more money in the short run at least. Maybe even in the long run unless you do very well in litigation in the future.

Indian academics don't get paid enough to pay for their own RAs, unless you're joining a funded project. I've worked with one NLU prof twice in two of his projects in law and tech. Both were funded, and I got 10k for each month. He was also very kind, wrote me excellent LORs for my LLM applications which helped me to get a scholarship. But the work was also demanding. The guy worked throughout the day and my deliverables were strict, though he did give me time off once for health reasons and another time for a family event.

A. West Bengal will not vote for BJP until it sheds the garb of communalism and only focuses on development and anti-corruption agenda. Doesn't matter what the religion of the voter is.

B. Nowhere has any honorary degree for the CM or anyone else been proposed beyond Legally India. In any case, the state government doesn't have money to spare. The university should be allowed instead to start new courses including distance programmes and generate its own funds.

Looking for a competent corporate lawyer based in Delhi

I am seeking recommendations for a Delhi-based corporate lawyer with strong hands-on experience in oppression and mismanagement matters, particularly before the NCLT and NCLAT.

The issues also involve overlapping civil law aspects, so sound knowledge of civil procedure, injunctions, and related remedies is essential.

Bo26 had two day-zero hires at SAM and around three at King & Partridge. CAM Bangalore is the only firm that regularly recruits from Christ, mainly by offering 6–8 month paralegalships to fourth- and final-year students alongside college. Apart from this, there is very little to show for campus placements. AZB interviewed around eight students and did not hire anyone.

Some of this is due to the overall quality of the student body, but that is not the full picture. The law school’s position compared to other similar institutions cannot be ignored. Among the decent law schools, Christ is clearly at the bottom.

There is no real support system for anything meaningful in law school, whether it is mooting, research, internships, or other academic work. The peer group is mostly average, with only a few genuinely strong students in each batch. The management is controlling and ineffective, and the Dean, HoD, and faculty coordinators are largely incompetent. The focus is on marketing Christ as a good law school rather than admitting problems or trying to fix them.

When I joined, several final-year students told me to rewrite CLAT and leave. I did not listen. Even though I have managed to secure a decent placement on my own, I still feel the need to warn future students. If you have the option, take a year off, rewrite CLAT, and go elsewhere. Do not choose SLCU unless you truly have no other option.

The aim is to become a good lawyer, not just to get a law degree. You can still become a good lawyer after graduating from Christ, but you will always wonder how much better your journey could have been.

I agree. No regime change. A 35% united votebank will always defeat a 65% disunited votebank. The college’s future will depend on working with the current regime. The challenge will be extracting as much funding from them as possible, without compromising too much on reputation and integrity. If some compromise has to be done, like the honorary LLD for the CM, then an appropriate price must be asked for, eg Rs 50 crore funding, renovated hostels, more land etc. We need a canny VC for that.

Latham's Singapore office may not be located in the U.S. or UK, but it does not fall under the criteria of "Non-American Non-UK International Law Firms which hire Indians". Legally India's readership is supposed to be comprised of those lawyers who read law at undergraduate level and beyond at the best universities in India and around the world. But graduates (especially law graduates) of the best universities in India and around the world have been taught one thing, for sure: reading and understanding a question, and addressing a question directly as it is asked, and not some other version or variation of a question that they made up in their heads. Seemingly, therefore, the reputation of Legally India in this regard has been misrepresented.

Will higher NLUs have to create supernumerary seats to accommodate those who have moved up in the rank list?

I heard recently about this advocate called Niranjan Reddy at SC during the Presidential reference matter, he’s arguments are absolutely phenomenal, someone who’s outside from the circles of Delhi to stand on par with the best, definitely to watch out for in the coming years. He’s a first gen lawyer though

By "fully unreserved", I mean no quota whatsoever: no caste, EWS, domicile etc. Admission purely on merit, on basis on CLAT score and nothing else. If such seats are very few, then aren't private law schools like Jindal and Symbi the only realistic option for those who are excluded from these quotas? Given India's population, there will probably be many thousands of students in this section?

Meanwhile, this also allows Jindal to hike fees with impunity.

If you have a JRF, immediately start a PhD, complete it within 3 years and then apply. The reason being, an assistant professor is selected based on API score. A LLM+JRF gets you 7 marks only. A PhD gets you 30. Notice the huge difference. Moreover, your fellowship will only start after you obtain a PhD admission. Every year the competition is increasing. You may end having nothing in your hands if you don't get admission within 3 years. So focus first on getting a PhD. After which, the income is based on the 7th pay commission and you may get around 1 to 1.5 lakhs per month depending on university. Jindal or Symbi would also give you more if you have a good publications record as well.

P.S. if you're getting into academia, don't expect huge money. It's work-life balance. Nothing beats corporate for money and judiciary for power.
