And understand this, no matter what specialisation you choose, the top is always vacant. You beat competition by authenticity. You you are not seeing it as a linkedin buzzword and really enjoy it, it should not be difficult for you to break in. You're from a T1 NLU, leverage that well. Take up relevant co-curriculars. I'm from SLSP, batch of 22. Consistently got below 6cgpa until the 7th sem. Post that we had very less credit courses. Got above 8 a couple of times but credits in those seems were less than half. Ended with net barely above 6gpa. Still got an offer and have been working in M&A and GC since then. All mountains can be climbed. Leverage your strengths.

Some seniors (Batch of 2022) at NALSAR had a lame fetish that the world (meaning: the incoming batch) should know their names. Whatever to introducing yourselves. Come let me take you to our hostel and get your bullied for not having known (read: stalked) me before hand. That was a seriously weird batch with huge egos and very weird power dynamics with each other and their juniors. Thankfully the practice more or less fizzled out afterwards.

If NLS students think this is a 'win' for them, they must be living under a rock or on another planet. I know some students already resent this fiasco for spoiling this memorable event in their lives. No one (let alone a law school) can insult the CJI (not the person, but the office). Moreover, NLS cannot insult the entity (BCI) that helped set up the university in the first place. Once these two are insulted, no one would agree to come to the convocation - think of it, not even the CM of Karnataka agreed. No one wants to get on the bad books of the CJI. Already, NLS is facing serious downfall in its placements with the humongous batch sizes. Such wokeism has badly misfired for NLS, and created bitterness about NLUs in general.

I agree with the post above. The contrast is so visible. On the same day, NFSU School of Law declares the IDDRC operational (led by Justice Dave), inaugurated by the CJI earlier in February 2026. This is a great milestone for the NFSU School of Law in creating this national asset for India, while NLS is busy with such petty and narrow-minded affairs.

A good analogy would be what Mamata did to the Tatas by opposing their coming to WB (for frivolous reasons) and the consequences it has faced since then on the state's investment climate.

Hello. I'm a second year law student from a tier 1 (lol) NLU. Unfortunately, more often than not, I find myself thinking about how this degree is not for me. I do not enjoy the environment I'm in, I do not see myself in either a corporate law firm or practising litigation. Truthfully, I find myself thinking that I'm simply not smart or competent enough for law. Even if that were true, above all, I just do not ENJOY it. I've always been interested in arts, film, music and the creative fields mainly.

I've been told that I can work in a field that's an intersection of law and the creative field. I've been told that I can try HR or Marketing.

I have no one to seek guidance from, no one who could get what I'm going through. I'd really REALLY appreciate some advice from you all. thank you!

August is almost over, and so is the Day 0 season at t-1 NLUs. If there's one thing that we've all very clearly learnt from this, it's that the increased batch sizes at NLS have not only been a disaster for themselves, but have also had an equally cascading effect on others too.

At the start of this decade, NLS would have a double digit batch size, and along with NALSAR, NUJS and NLUD, the graduating batch would be ~400. Now, the incoming batches at BA LLB in NLS themselves have 400 students+ 60 at LLB. 135 at NALSAR. 130+60 at NUJS. And some 80 at NLUD. You would have close to 900 students only from the top 4 law schools lol.

It's terrifying to think what would happen to the batches of 28 and 29 in the near future. The law firm job market gets worse each year, and does not show absolutely any sign of recovery any time soon, at least not in this decade. I don't want to get into specific numbers, but NLS has 2/3 of its batch unplaced. NALSAR and NUJS around half. A significant part of this includes really deserving candidates, with good profiles, who have nothing to blame on themselves. You spend lakhs and lakhs behind an elite degree after clearing a competitive exam, go through 5 years of law school only to graduate unemployed. I don't think rankers have to ever had struggle so much.

Law is not a basic graduation degree like a bachelor's in humanities. When you treat it as one, mindlessly expand your intake without any regard for the potential future of your students, you eventually do face the brunt. Competition keeps getting fiercer, and opportunities keep getting scarcer. So congratulations NLS, you've managed to keep a huge bunch of yourselves, as well as others, unemployed.

Thread is 2 years old, but for anyone new facing similar situations, trust me, there is no real consistency in hirings. CGPA is only a cut off for only one kind of placements, the on-campus ones. For those that do have them as well, not everyone has super high cut offs. CGPA can also consistently change, and sort of settled around the Year 4 mark, big change from there is improbable. And if you do well in other things like internships, sky's the limit. Genuinely educate yourself, CGPA won't matter beyond Day Zero.

But if you want absolutely no ifs and buts about it, a comfortable spot is above 7.5 (8 is arbitrary). And yes, gaining a +/- 1 CGPA score in the next 2-3 years can happen. Happened with me.

Go if you want to meet other well to do people (who can spend 5k + just to attend) in the city... you may make friends, find someone to date or may be network in your business or profession.

NLSIU has so much clout that the government/CJI flew the students to meet with the CJI??!! Isn't that a bit much? The CJI doesn't seem bothered about other NLUs.

S&R has introduced a stupid system of deferred bonus payments. You get 75 percent in march, and 25 percent in June. This is meant to discourage exits. I know they aren't the only people who do it, but it still sucks. Also, for A0s, the well known 16.8 + 3 is not true anymore. The bonus paid is less than that now. Compensation is still somewhat competitive, but the firm used to be the market leader when we got our offers.

The top 1 global player of legal AI, the one everyone name drops in every VC deck is sitting at a pathetic 7.8% practically tied with LawNet AI, a tool nobody's even heard of.For a company with their funding and hype that's not a rough day, that's an identity crisis. Someone at harvey owes their team an uncomfortable monday standup.

And the kicker, the two "legal native, built for lawyers" platforms (Harvey and LawNet AI) got smoked by general purpose tools like perplexity and pair search that weren't even trying to be legal specific. So much for the specialization pitch.

I am a Harvey girl or at least I was, so this stings a little.

If you want to do PhD in India full-time, only then JRF makes sense. Otherwise, you should try looking for an AP job that offers scale pay, and pursue your PhD part-time, which you can do even from NLUs. Not all NLUs are equally good in that regard, as I am sure you know. Some of the private places may even offer better PhD fellowships than JRF.

You can approach headhunters, but do check their credentials and ask around if someone you know might have used their services before. There are a few old names like Vahura and others, you can find posts about them on LI itself.

If you know someone in the firm that you would like to join, you can also ask the HR through these contacts whether they are looking for people, in which case your details and CV can be shared.

Excellent. Did the Managing Partner brief the support staff too? I don't think he did. ELP has a decent sized HR team (4), Corporate Communications (6), Admin (3) and a number of secretaries (around 8). I assume none of them will move to Dhruva, except the secretaries of the three senior equity partners in Tax and Trade. After TnT leave, the Managing Partner plans to build an AI led firm which will be "asset light". I fear most, if not all the support staff, and a number of Associates in Corporate, Litigation etc. will be looking for jobs pretty soon after the break-up is officially announced.

20 years ago parents didn't want their kids to study law. They were pushing them to engineering and medical. NLSIU was originally meant to create litigators who are not paid that well. NLU fees realigned to commercial firm salaries since that's where most grads go now. People take loans in anticipation of the salary; they are not always rich, but yes, post-liberalization, more people do have money.

In India if we tried something like that on anything like a meaningful scale, the big cities of the country would be overwhelmed with unemployed uncles who join anti-feminist and anti-women organisations to satisfy their wet dreams and to wallow in the comfort of explanations that the cause for their misery is everything but themselves - so-called non-transparent moral standards, woke people, men who betray other men to the so-called "woke cause", the so-called feminisation of the legal profession (a laughable concept considering how horribly women are treated in it), etc, etc.

I remember John Oliver called some of the dating apps "a barrage of unwanted dicks". If we tried to dismiss partners for bad behaviour on a meaningful scale, the T1 cities of our country would become: "barrages of middle-aged, unemployed, unwanted dicks".

There are many firms which are small and lowkey but pay decent with good work. I'm trying to find out all opportunities. Are there any openings at Associate level? A1/A2/A3.

If anyone has interned in SAM Mumbai's B&F Practice, would love to know your experience - the teams and their environment, associates' behaviour, work hours, quality of work, etc. They only give 2 weeks to start off, is extension difficult to get, especially in months like December?
