I had a wonderful stint at a top tier law firm a month ago. The people i worked with, recommended to apply for a second time there. So i completed all the formalities but then received a rejection mail 4 weeks later when i asked for an update. I have never felt so disheartened seeing a rejection mail before and don't know what to do now that i do not have anything lined up till now.
Also they sent the exact same rejection mail to all of the co interns i worked with in that month.
Should i contact any of the people I’ve worked with or let it go?
However if you team said good things about you- the process is that you should not applu again. Instead they will tell the HR to process your call back. Then HR will call you saamne se and ask you whixh months are suitable for you.
In your current situation, pls reach out to your team’s PA or Partner and request them for a call back.
Toward the end of college, I somehow landed an internship at a Tier 1 law firm, courtesy of someone who did me a favour while making sure everyone concerned knew I was merely a “distant relative”. Why wouldn’t they? I went in thinking that if I put in every ounce of time, hard work and effort I could muster, I might earn a callback or a pre-placement offer (PPO).
The partners and associates who supervised my work, at every level, appreciated my effort. But the work itself was subpar, nowhere near the standard required for a job at that firm or, for that matter, any self-respecting Tier 1 firm.
Had I woken up then and taken myself seriously enough to develop my legal knowledge, reasoning and communication skills, perhaps today, I would have a reasonably well-paying job or a busy legal practice. Perhaps I wouldn’t still be sleeping in my parents’ guest room. Perhaps I’d even be married, with a car of my own. You know.. the basics!
I still call myself a lawyer, despite doing little more than taking on sundry legal work from neighbours and family friends, mostly for free or at fees that would make a lawyer with even two years’ PQE chuckle. I live mostly off my parents. My circumstances frighten away even the people I date who genuinely want to like me. For a time, I even found myself hating women, with all that rejection, for what I perceived as hypergamy. It was an ugly rabbit hole, one I eventually managed to climb out of through some honest self-reflection.
When you find yourself in this position in life and realise that you have no one to blame but yourself, you cannot even bring yourself to cry for the relief it might offer. You endure the pain and regret, and learn to live and - somehow - work with both. It's difficult and that level of pain and regret makes you inefficient.
Fortunately, I am neither suicidal nor superstitious. I’ve seen people in circumstances even remotely similar to mine become absolute goners. I keep my mind sharp with podcasts, books and exercise. Livestreaming of court proceedings has helped me too as a lawyer.
My advice to anyone who finds themselves in a situation even remotely resembling mine is simple: if what you are doing isn’t working, have the courage to try something else sooner rather than later. But whatever you do, don’t give up on yourself. Keep trying, and build yourself to make every effort land better than before - that's key.
I went though the same experience myself. I had interned in a top tier firm in mumbai for nearly two months while handling mysubmissions for an intl moot. id spent long hours at office, come back home with more work from office and then work on my memo. would barely get to sleep for 2-3 hours a day. and honestly my routine was a horrible mess. despite that i worked really hard and was appreciated by the ppl in the firm. to the fact that some of them even expected to see me come back once more.
I applied for my callback was hearing one common response for 5 months - we'll get back to you. it was finally in late august 2026 when i was told that i won't be getting a callback. the sadness and panic that i went through was immense - since i essentially had no internships for december and jan. but im a much better position now and do have stuff planned out.
all in all, go cheer up buddy, try reaching out to old contacts - ask for a referall, do some cold mailing, send linkedin messages - try as much as you can and don't lose hope. it all gets better soon, hope you find something good lined up for you!
