Hi, can someone please tell me which of the two firms should I choose for an internship in M&A, PE and VC? Specifically, which is more likely to give a PPO and is not on a hiring freeze for the batch of 2026?

If you're talking about prestige then you ought to be aware that our prosecutors are not all powerful like the ones in Japan or South Korea, instead they largely derive their power from CrPC/BNSS and that is also in many cases bypassable by the Hon'ble Ld. Judges.

The pay is pathetic, however, the work experience you gain and contacts you make is something which cannot be ignored in this line.

If you think you will like the work then go ahead. Life is too short to spend it splitting hairs about which kind of work is prestigious. Though I would recommend that you become defence counsel instead just to ensure that your pay is at least somewhat commensurate with skill. The nature of work is broadly the same irrespective of whether you are a prosecutor or defence counsel anyway.

The only way to get into that is through joining the forces. Military, Paramilitary or Police. There's also an IB recruitment, but that's open for all. If you're interested in intelligence as an advocate you may apply for CBI prosecution, IB prosecution or APO (state wise). Other than that if you really want to get into the high level stuff like RAW or MI, then definitely need a Special Forces background or you need to be a specialist. Recently there was a massive recruitment for cyber specialist, but that's only for btech/mtech grad. Either clear UPSC exams like CAPF, CSE (IPS) or SSB for military, or state pcs police. Then from there join their respective intelligence units. It's not an easy or straightforward journey. All the best.

Your senior is absolutely right. You need to buckle up and perform. All these things you are lamenting about missing will come back with a premium once you make it big.

Or you can fizz out and settle for a life of absolute mediocrity.

I am an in-house lawyer and your In-House friend echo's my view word to word, haha. That said, I am happy in-house and dont wish to go back to a law firm, notwithstanding constant doubting (yes, there are days) this decision from time to time.

Since I have gone in-house my health has improved substantially and am personally much happier, and I am able to do all sorts of extra curricular activities.

Choice is between money and mental health. If the latter is your preference, you'll still be able live a pretty decent life in an in-house setup. I'm a PA1 at a T1 firm. I've been desperately hunting for some inhouse role, can't find any at my experience. I'm willing to go for a paycut upto 30-40%, still there's barely any option for me. I would strongly recommend, if you want mental health just go for that inhouse role. It doesn't matter what your batchmates will be making at your level down the line. It gets tougher when you have a family and your kid expects to see you before he goes to bad. Unfortunately, it's mostly the weekends when he gets to see/play with his dad. T1 life is not worth the sacrifice!

For in house role. Your anti trust experience is pretty much useless.

Except a few companies - Amazon, Google, Meta, Adani. Nobody else wants to hire an anti trust lawyer. They would prefer a law firm instead.

What does everyone really want to say out loud? That the so-called “homegrown OGs” have slipped out the door: not with grace, not with stewardship, but with quiet self-preservation. They didn’t steady the ship; they stepped off and let it drift. After all these years, the institution couldn’t inspire even a flicker of loyalty. Leadership can keep insisting everything is fine, but that’s a story they tell themselves to stay afloat.

For years, leadership put the old guard on pedestals while overlooking the others. And the pattern shall always continue. Laterals may not be the center of the universe, but many of them at least have a soul.

The OGs who are left, however, are a different matter entirely. No one wants to work with them. The selfishness, the whisper networks, the constant undercurrent of petty drama..it’s all become unbearable. Instead of rising to the moment, they’ve shrunk into insecurity and superiority theater.

With multiple partner exits, the firm is at a point where honest self-reflection isn’t optional : it’s urgent. They need to reckon with who they wanted to be and who they’re actually becoming.

S-N-R needs to face the truth: who is truly building the firm? who would you want to sit at the table with? They need leaders with soul and integrity, leaders who can unite, leaders who can uplift. Drop the OG-tainted glasses, look clearly and act decisively.

Otherwise, good bye the TRIo- LEGAL is not for you!
