NLSIU Bangalore pipped SOEL Chennai in the finals of the Jessup South India Qualifiers, beefing up its already huge lead this season.
In the semifinals SOEL defeated Nalsar Hyderabad and NLSIU cruised past Dr Ambedkar Law College, Chennai.
MPL 3 Quicklinks:
SOEL speaker Krishna won the best speaker and NLSIU bagged the best memorandum award in this Tier 3 MPL moot that is the qualifier to the Jessup International Rounds.
This is the fifth moot win and best memorandum citation for NLSIU Bangalore this season and it now enjoys a huge 82-point lead over NLU Jodhpur. SOEL Chennai moved up from 19th position to 7th, and Nalsar Hyderabad moved up from 8th place to 6th in the MPL 3 Season Standings.
The NLSIU team consisted of speakers Anupama Kumar and Divyanshu Agrawal along with researchers Sharad Bansal and Jahnavi Sindhu.
Kumar said that the team enjoyed working together. “The moot was a lot of fun. It was an incredible experience to face tough questions posed by the judges and to be able to think on your feet, knowing that you could not say anything immediately.”
Kumar stated categorically that the judging standards throughout the moot were good. “In our first round we had a silent but good bench and in our second round we had an aggressive bench who asked a lot of questions. In the final rounds, we had judges like Prof Ambrose (who has been judging the moot for quite a few years now) and Rishab Sancheti, who asked us challenging questions and tested our basics. We were forced to pause, think and answer immediately.”
When asked about the likelihood of NLSIU winning the MPL, Kumar remained cautious. “We are keeping our fingers crossed for the international rounds. We have to get together and figure out a lot of things and it will be a lot of work. It is too early to predict the MPL outcome this season as there are many top moots like Vis, Jessup which are yet to happen and there is also much that is left to chance. That said, it feels nice to have won this moot.”
The moot was organised by Surana & Surana International Attorneys in collaboration with NUALS Kochi. Vaisakhi R from the NUALS Moot Court Committee said that this was the first time the University was organising an international moot. “Overall, the moot went off well. We did have a few glitches here and there. The accommodation for the participants was a bit far away but we did have transportation facilities. The teams were happy with the feedback from the judges and we tried to keep the moot as transparent as possible.” 15 teams participated in the competition.
Both NLS Bangalore and SOEL Chennai will be representing South India in the Jessup International rounds at Washington D.C in March. The Jessup North India rounds will be taking place this weekend at Amity Law School, New Delhi.

Same old, same old. NLS last year, Nalsar this year, Nalsar in 2009 etc. Until someone actually takes this up with ILSA, or the Law Schools get together and do something about it, nothing's going to change, and every year somebody will get screwed.
Remember that SOEL always performed well in many moots. I think in MPL 1 they ranked 5th and not sure about MPL 2.
I met a few students from SOEL and most of them are students who gave up their NLS and Nalsar admission's because they didn't want to move from Chennai.
1st best speaker
2nd best speaker
2nd best memorial
And spirit of Surana Award.
And they were not pipped by NLS in the final. It was a close and SOEL deserved to win.
SOEL was much better than NLS and Nalsar.
Bad judging really needs to be discarded.
i think, the issue indeed should be taken up with ILSA.
You should remember that the level of competition differs every year.
NALSAR and ILS may have faced tougher opponents in the preliminary rounds.
Think (if you can that is) before you make such sweeping statements!
the overall standard of judging went up this time (judges like V. Niranjan, Ashwani K., Ansu Paul, Rishabh Sancheti, Adithya Reddy) and the overall standard of mooting was revealed, when the last question in the finals; "diff between an agent and a counsel", which has a direct answer in the ICJ charter, could not be answered by the "winning team's" "best speaker of finals"
Quoting Present Mooter:
I was referring to the DC rounds.
If you're second time at Jessup, like your name claims you to be, you'll know what I'm talking about. You have to be astonishingly bad not to make it past the prelims.
In short, if you don't make it past prelims, you suck. End of.
I am part of the NLUD Team. Caveat Emptor.
There you can send us updates. Or you can send emails to mooting at legallyindia dot com.
Or you can sms me on 0900 405 6651.
Or there are plenty more options like GChat, etc... Let us know what you prefer via any of the above.
Cheers
Kian
In the internal rounds, the last year's team could not qualify, after that, Tau Ranbir Singh played his joker card and gave back door entry to them....anyway, that remains our internal matter, what matters is We won the North India Rounds...So, suck it...
This was one of NLUD's best moot teams. NLUD won this moot last year too. It would be really nice of you if you could substantiate your allegations with some kind of a proof. Till then, let us not take away the credit from those who truly deserve it.
Good Luck.
Assuming the fact that you are a reasonable person, I am sure that you must have based your allegations on certain things called evidences. All I am asking you to do is to disclose it. Your inability to do so only makes your allegations baseless and unreliable.
The NLUD team worked very hard for the competition. Shreya was the 9th best speaker in the world and Akshay was the 17th best speaker in the world last year in the Washington rounds. Therefore, this moot victory was the most highly anticipated one.
In case you do reply, please come up with something worth considering.
Good luck.
As far as RS is concerned yes he does helps us in wining moots, he helps us getting the best judges to hold the intras and select the best teams teams, he provides us with all the facilities that anyone can ask for, the exemptions and stuff, the books, the practise rounds etc.
