A lot of mooting action took place over the last weekend-and-a-bit, and the MPL table appears very different now than it did two weeks ago.

Symbi rocks Surana corp to take MPL gold
Our much-delayed coverage of the 15th Surana Corporate Law Moot Court Competition (17-19 February, hosted by JSS Law College, Mysore) is finally here, after official confirmations from the organisers of results.
Symbiosis Pune continued with its ruthless onslaught for mooting glory as it took down GLC Mumbai for the winner’s trophy and simultaneously became the first non-NLU in MPL history to top the MPL league standings, replacing Nalsar Hyderabad for the top position.
The team of Mrudula Sarampally, Devina Srivastava and Priyanka Sharma represented SLS Pune and Shinjan Alok, Blanche Christine Dsouze and Khyati Goel made up the GLC Mumbai team.
Institute of Law, Nirma University and Symbiosis Noida were the other semi-finalists at the moot.
NLU Cuttack, Odisha bagged the best memorial citation as Sayak Chatterjee from UPES Dehradun won the best speaker award.

GNLU (and NLS, NUJS) go far at Frankfurt Investment Arbitration moot
Clearly not satiated after its ELSA (Asia-Pacific) victory, GNLU Gandhinagar emerged as runner-up at the 10th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court Competition 2017.
NLSIU Bangalore and NUJS Kolkata were the other Indian universities to have broken into the advanced rounds and both emerged as quarter-finalists and hence have not been awarded any points.

15th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2017
Representing India at the international rounds, NLSIU bagged the 3rd-best-written submission for the prosecution at the 15th Red Cross Moot Court Competition and has been awarded 3 points under the “Other Hon’ble Mention” category as per MPL rules.
NLU Delhi cleans up at 2nd ICC moot
NLU Delhi hosted the 2nd Indian Qualifiers of the International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition 2017 (Indian Qualification Rounds) over 16-19 March 2017, with the host college amassing every single winnable citation, as NLU Delhi defeated defending champions NLSIU Bangalore (first runner-up) and GNLU Gandhinagar (second runner-up) in the finals.
GNLU has been awarded MPL points equivalent to a semi-finalist (3rd position) citation.
Aditya Garg from NLU Delhi bagged the best speaker citation and the college won the best memorial citation too, leaping from the 22nd position to 12th place, only a point behind School of Law Christ University, Bangalore.

MPL season analysis: Symbi outperforms, GNLU nibbles, NLU Delhi brings it (at) home
Symbiosis Pune has marginally taken an 8-point lead over Nalsar Hyderabad, as it continued to exert dominance with consistently outperforming other single Indian law school in the national tier category of moots.
The Pune Symbi has so far won 3 moots, emerged as runners-up in 1 and broken into the semi-finals in 6 different moots.
Simultaneously, GNLU Gandhinagar has extended its lead over RGNUL Patiala by 17 points, nibbling at Nalsar’s 2nd spot as it stands merely 3 points away from the erstwhile top position holder.
Meanwhile NLSIU Bangalore has shown some strong presence in the International tier category as it scored 13 points to break back into the 5th position, only 4 points ahead of NLIU Bhopal.
NLU Delhi’s post-ICC’s 40-point killer haul (with home advantage) has gifted it the biggest MPL jump so far, and it is now undeniably in the MPL race.
Amidst all of this action, NLU Jodhpur has been once again pushed down to 9th spot, as the MPL 6 champion failed to score a single point post the ELSA WTO Asia Pacific rounds and continues to face some tough competition from the MPL middle position holders.
But with the international rounds of Stetson Environment Law Moot not being very far, multiple citation victories could mean the MPL 7 fortunes of NLU Jodhpur may yet change.
Over the course of the next 7 days as we attempt to cover HNLU’s flagship moot court competition along with the international rounds of CLEA, the obvious question to ask is: Will SLS Pune continue to wreak havoc and claim its first MPL trophy or will GNLU push Nalsar to 3rd and scale the 11 point difference between itself and the table topper?

1) Symbi and GLC have no attendance, so students only prepare for moots and nothing else.
2) As you have pointed out, mooting does not matter if one wishes to get a good job or LLM admission in a top law school

Though i respect your personal opinion, Symbi for one isn't far inferior to NLU's. It might not be better than some of them, but it still is not 'far inferior'. Please open your minds and horizon a little.
Secondly, Symbi does have a rule of attendance set at 75%. Though it is relaxed on a case-to-case basis, and looking at mooting, academics, sporting and medical reasons. In most cases, students not being able to maintain attendance are granted term not granted (TNG) wherein the internals are not counted for that semester and you have to retake them the next, you're also not allowed to sit for any of the externals and have to take it next semester as well.
Thirdly, Mooting surely does not matter with reference to a good job or LLM admission, but it has a number of its advantages, it would be more beneficial if you google them.
Fourthly, Corruption in judging and bias? are you Arvind Kejriwal? Thats the last resort you took to?
Why are minor moots getting such high points?
Friends, please do not be fooled by this scam, which is being done in the lead up to the CLAT. I think India Today and Outlook will also take money and rank Symbi high. The truth is that NLUs will always be much better than Symbi in every way: moots, placements, infra, student quality and faculty quality.
For the record, the MPL list of moots has not changed significantly for a few years, so you're attributing far too many predictive powers to us on that front, that we can somehow game the performance of one college over others with the list of moots :)
In any case, the great thing about the MPL is that it should be 99% objective, with very very little discretion at our end (and arguably no real discretion to favour one team over another). It also aims to be pretty transparent, so if we haven't awarded points where they are due, then you can call us out on it.
As for Oxford IP, it is a Tier 5 international moot but we don't award points for the national qualifiers to it, currently. If Indian participation in Oxford IP has increased considerably, we can consider an upgrade (though many foreign moots are prohibitively expensive, so we would err on the side of caution there, in the interests of not making the MPL too dominated but which college and students have the greatest funds).

At the beginning of this season and throughout, we have actually been soliciting feedback about all the moots in the previous MPL, and whether any should be up or downgraded, but had no feedback about Frankfurt.
Of course ranking moots can not be a completely objective exercise (any more than ranking law schools), but the most important thing has always been that even if the system isn't perfect,
1) it is forward looking in the vast majority of cases (in order to avoid possible bias in favour of one school, upgrading a competition after it has already been won by someone), and
2) it is up for debate, so we are happy to make changes if we get solid feedback and reasons for up and downgrading a moot.
It is possible Oxford IP has come up in the rankings in the past few years, but I'm pretty sure there was a reason for having it in tier 5 when it first started (probably not enough participation initially from India).
If that has changed, for next MPL season we'd be more than happy to consider it.

Let me make it clear - the only things that are proven by a college's MPL performance are some or all of the following:
1. The college has some smart students who enjoy mooting.
2. The college has a culture that encourages and appreciates mooting.
3. The college perhaps promotes mooting financially and with faculty and other support.
There might be a few points I've missed. But if in any doubt, the MPL does not translate into an automatic ranking of college quality.
And I think most aspirants know that. They do, right?
I don't think we ever published a ranking where Symbi was high on placements and faculty, though a reader-contributed blog analysis may have done (though from what I remember, that had NLUs in all the top spots, I think).
To be honest, there are so many various facts, figures and rankings in our archives, that it's easy for anyone to cherry pick to come up with whatever rankings they prefer.
Agree with your main argument though, that no real guidance is provided (which is why it's been quite safe for the CLAT to just go by the long-established order, mostly by year of founding).

Then comes new NLUs, then Jindal/Symbi/Amity.
Thumb rule: Always NLUs first, then the rest. NLU placements are always better.

The rule organically evolved out of what we did at Stetson and Jessup, where there are lots of citations (like 100 top speakers, etc), which attract points. Since most Indian teams returned from international moots with nothing under the old rules, we balanced it a bit a few years ago to the current system.
However, we are sometimes wrong in our tallying, so please point out if you think there's been a mistake.
All Tier V International Moots have a separate citation category called "Other Hon'ble Mentions" under which Best Speaker (Finals) points (3) are awarded for Tier V moots like ELSA WTO Asia Pacific Rounds. This is over and above the Best Speaker (Prelims/Overall) which is usally 5 points for all Tier V moots. We have followed a uniform format of awarding points before and after ELSA.

Hope it comes across, but I take your point :)
We are aware of the 3 teams per round format at ICC. We have followed precedent of awarding the 2nd Runners-Up points equivalent to a Semi-Finalist position finish because the MPL structure is based on a general framework of 1 winner, 1 runners-up, 2 semifinalist etc. Catering to specific requirements of particular moots tends to be disruptive of this general rubric.

by awarding the finalists the points of a semi finalist stage youre essentially disregarding the fact that they reached a more advanced stage than the semi finals! its like hey we already gave 2 teams the finalists points to 2 teams so the third team just has to live with semi finalist points even though they reached the finals, super absurd!
Points are awarded on the basis of the overall position attained by a given college in a moot. While there are 3 finalists in ICC, the 3rd place holder (or second runners-up) is considered equivalent to a semi-finalist because of their overall rank in the moot. Awarding them points equivalent to semi-finalists is in no fashion demoting them to a position which they do not deserve. It is merely awarding of points for coming 3rd overall. Also, accommodating specific requirements of particular moots becomes extremely difficult because it skews up the framework that we intend to follow for other moots. If given a choice of having one uniform MPL points awarding system for all the moots on one hand and one specifically catering to ICC on the other, I guess the choice if fairly obvious.
Also, we cannot be awarding the same points to both runners-up teams, because one team essentially performed better than the other, which is why the 2nd ranked team gets more points than the 3rd ranked team.
You're so overcome by your bias against GNLU, that winning an international moot (Frankfurt) doesn't seem to merit let alone the title of the article, but not even the sub-title where your feel the need to mention the other NLUs that only reached the quarters.
Please appreciate the effort that students put into moots without being blinded by your bias against their university.
Honestly, we may have our editorial differences with the GNLU admin, but I'm super happy for GNLU students, who are an awesome bunch for the most part, and I absolutely love to see them perform well.
Incidentally, you sound like you may be a younger batch so you might not know this, but MPL was started with LI by GNLU's very own Vinay Mishra (with GNLU's Sanjay Khan Nagra and Prashanth Ramdas taking over the reins for the seasons after that).
The table will truly become clear when the International Rounds of most Moots begin starting with Vis East next week. If Symbi hopes to retain its top spot, it must actually prove its mettle in the bigger leagues.
Unless I am a Lex Luthor level supervillain, please explain to me how I could possibly have rigged MPL 7 in favour of Symbi, even if I wanted to (and it's very much the opposite, as our editorial policies and my personal convictions are clear that ads biasing editorial is the last thing I want).
The list of moots has been basically static for years, and was finalised before Symbi ever won anything. Now unless we can either somehow rig individual moots, time travel, look into the future, or remote control mooters, I don't see any realistic way to explain any of those arguments, though I'd love to hear some ideas or thoughts :)
Fact is, Symbi Pune seems to be doing particularly well this MPL season, especially when compared against previous seasons, when they weren't really anywhere. But comment 11 Guest may be right that the big upcoming international moots could shift the points towards the NLUs again. Or maybe not, who knows :)

I can similarly show you that coaching centres are giving rankings from Legally India (along with Outlook, India Today and Careers 360). And now the MPL ranking is being given.
The point is that the rankings are causing a lot of confusion for students and parents. You need to please clarify what is the official ranking of Legally India and also whether rankings by various magazines is correct.
