This mooting weekend belonged to ILS Law College Pune, which scored back-to-back victories to propel it into fifth place of the Mooting Premier League (MPL). ILS Pune is now the top-ranked non-national law school, taking over the position from SOEL Chennai and overtaking NLIU Bhopal.
At the ninth Surana & Surana International Technology moot court competition at Symbiosis Law School Pune from 26 to 28 February, ILS Pune won the event after defeating the team from Nuals Kochi in the finals.
Nuals gained 3 MPL points from the event, jumping two places up to the 12th position.
NLU Jodhpur's Mayank Jain bagged the best orator winning 5 points, meaning only 4 points now separate NLU Jodhpur from NLSIU Bangalore in second place.
[Correction 3 March 2010: 1. We had originally erroneously reported that UILS Punjab University had won the best orator award. This was caused by confusion amongst convenors as well as participants, as Surana Tech has a large number of best orator subcategories. NLU Jodhpur won the best orator prize in the preliminary rounds, which are the ones we use for MPL scores in such cases.
2. We have also corrected an earlier inaccuracy from November 2009 in reporting Nalsar BR Sawhney moot court best memorial prize. We have now received full confirmation from the moot court convenors at Nalsar that in November the best memorial prize went to NLU Jodhpur and not NLIU Bhopal, as was originally reported. This means that Bhopal has dropped to joint fifth place behind ILS Pune. Thanks for pointing both of these out. We regret the errors sincerely. -Ed]
The league leader Nalsar Hyderabad had a quiet weekend compared to its performance in the past few weeks but nevertheless managed to get 5 points by winning the best memorial and extending its lead at the top.
Alakiri Asaithambi of ILS Pune won best orator in the finals and commented: "It was a good experience and the judging was good. The judges not only had knowledge of law, but also were very knowledgeable in the field of technology and economics. The problem required knowledge of both law and technology."
In the second MPL-included event this weekend, ILS Pune won the ULC Bangalore moot court competition organised by the Society of Mooters of ULC Bangalore from 26 to 28 February.
ILS won another 5 points from the event, taking its total tally from the weekend to 10 points. With the two wins, ILS has now moved to fourth position and is now two points ahead of NLIU Bhopal. [See above correction. -Ed]
In an all-Pune final, ILS Pune had defeated Symbiosis Law School Pune in the competition. With the 3 points earned from the runner-up place, Symbiosis is now back in the top 10 again.
RGNUL Patiala bagged 5 points with the best memorial prize at the event, which puts puts the college into 9th place from 10th.
However the biggest winner of the event was new entrant CMR Law School Bangalore.
Shurup Chouwdhary of CMR Bangalore won the best orator and the college also bagged the best researcher award. This gives CMR a strong entry into the MPL in an impressive 16th place with 10 points.
Society of Mooters ULC Bangalore convenor Anirudh Garga said that this was the 14th edition of the moot court competition which sees participation from the entire country and top law colleges. The finals of the event were judged by sitting High Court Judges.
He added: "All score cards are to be put in our website - www.ulcxivmoot.in - soon to ensure transparency. I like to say that this moot is one of the most transparent moots all over India, we do not have any personal choices and all judges were eminent persons in the field of law." [The quote was added on 2 March in response to a comment below. -Ed]
A total of 26 law colleges from all over India have now gained points in the MPL with the difference between the top-ranked and the last-placed Campus Law Centre Delhi and GNLU Gandhinagar being a whopping 111 points.
A total of 15 non-national law schools are present in the league table, with the majority (six) of the top 10 being non-national law schools.
Nalsar Hyderabad still remains in a strong lead, followed by NLS Bangalore and NLU Jodhpur.
However, this week Symbiosis Pune and Nuals Kochi overtook 13th placed NUJS Kolkata, which is understood to have had a disappointing mooting season compared to last year due to internal politics and funding issues.
Next week's MPL will cover this year's first tier 2 moot event this season with the Henry Dunant Asia Pacific rounds. SOEL Chennai is representing India at the event after having won the National and SAARC rounds. Last year, GNLU Gandhniagar represented India and were runners-up in the event.
Tier 2 wins are worth 15 points, with runners-up bagging 10 points. A total of 44 points are allocated between semi-finalists, best orator, memorial and researcher.
SOEL Chennai has not won a moot since strong performances last year but if it performs well at Henry Dunant's Asia Pacific rounds it could take the school up the ranks of the MPL.
Next week the tier 4 Amity Law School moot court competition will also take place.
We are still confirming the best memorial prize at BR Sawhney, after comments that NLU Jodhpur had won this. We hope to get a final confirmation this week. [See below 3 March update.]
2 March: we have received a comment on the winner of the best orator prize in this Surana Tech moot. What we have reported responds to several sources, although as Surana Tech awards four best orator prizes, a lot of people are unclear on exactly who has won this. We will get full and final confirmation of this tomorrow. [see 3 March updates below]

are you sure Kian? I am not from that law school, however, making this statement without any evidence is rather presumptuous.
I have spoken to a few NUJS-ites and it appears there is some confusion, even internally about this.
As far as I understand there have definitely been issues with college funding and internal MCC-related disagreements but no one quite knows what exactly to point the finger at, it seems.
We still don't have all of the details on it but we are looking into it, out of curiosity. Would be interested to hear the full story and would welcome any NUJS-ites to get in touch with us.
Best regards,
Kian
i understand your frustration.... after all its difficult for less evolved primates to cope with loss... but NALSAR hasn't exactly won just small moots have they now?
they won BCI which is arguable the most prestigious moot in India. They won a best memo/speaker/ team in nearly EVERY moot organized...
they're finalists in jessups, runners up in henry dunant!
i dont see how it can get bigger than this except if youre from a college that has won some world moots but ... correct me if my short term memory is serving me right.. nlsiu was the only one to do that...
so my young primate... direct your GRRR and ARR and other syllables that you may know, elsewhere... this forum is meant for lawyers... we talk you see.. but then again.. where you come from.. they probably settle disputed by barring teeth and going GRRrr... you're not to be blamed...
we hope that in due course of time and with exposure to the right amount of love and civilized culture, you will definitely get past making sounds like GRRR... you just need to believe that WE CAN DO IT.. a la OBAMA: YES WE CAN!!
so yes you can too my primate friend.. yes you can too!
and the rest law school people..really wats the big deal!
ILS congratulations-for once u guys are under spotlight.:-)
and seriously guys, stop badmouthing everyone else. You guys might belong to different law schools/colleges, but I doubt everyone's so bitter about everyone else!
NLU Jodhpur performed exceeding well in that moot winning best victim's side, inter alia.
Please see the corrections made in the above for details.
By way of explanation, although not by way of excuse, the BR Sawhney memorial results were hard to confirm as we only reported the moot a month after the event in November 2009 when the MPL first started. Then and subsequently it had proved hard getting hold of the convenors.
For Surana Tech, there were so many best orators in different categories that Vinay confirmed today with almost a half-dozen people involved in the organisation and participation of the moot, many of whom were still not sure on who had won which orator prize. We now have definitive confirmation on this point.
Thanks to eagle-eyed readers for pointing out the errors, which we sincerely regret.
Best regards,
Kian
Lets hope we have a tougher competition going, as not have one sweeping winner as we have now...
Mine is bigger than yours!!!!
This is soo lame!
NLS still rules the roost. Look at Manfred Lachs, Jessup and the like. We're the only college from India that ever won Jessup.
so well, NALSAR's still there at the bottom somewhere.
The organisers, that is, ILSA call Philip C Jessup MCC as the Jessup Moot. However it is known as 'Jessups' in Indian law school circles. No point nitpicking about the name of the moot.
Mine is bigger than yours!!!!
This is soo lame!"
However, it is really sad to see unnecessary comments on respective colleges. Hopefully, we will bounce back next year and more law schoolites might finally feel inclined to moot, despite the pressures of the trimester system. Even if that is not the case, Mooting is just one of the aspects of law school, it is not everything.
Looking forward to friendly competition.
