It starts: Cyril Amarchand bags Shardul IP partner Ranjan Negi with team & PA Aarti Joshi as partners

Negi
Negi

Former Amarchand Mangaldas Gurgaon-based IP partner Ranjan Negi, who resigned from the Shardul Shroff managed region of the firm last month, will join Shardul’s brother’s split firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas with his team of five.

Negi is joining with principal associate Rekha Dabas and senior associates Pallavi Rao and Prashant Jha.

Update 15:01: Negi commented: “It’s a very good opportunity for all of us that we decided to take for our professional growth.”

Shardul Amarchand corporate principal associate Aarti Joshi will also be joining Cyril as a salaried partner.

Cyril Shroff confirmed the moves and commented that he was “very pleased” to welcome the new hires.

Negi confirmed his joining but was unable to comment further at the time of going to press.

We have reached out to Joshi and Shardul Shroff for comment.

Cyril and Shardul Shroff told Legally India and Mint in interviews earlier this month that they had not entered into any non-compete agreements, though Cyril said that it would be “some months at least” before they would laterally hire from each other, noting: “In that sort of a bloodbath everyone benefits and not us. Both will lose, so we’ll just be mature about it. There is enough talent elsewhere in other firms.”

Shardul had said: “We are competitors—when we start new firms obviously we are not carving the market in an anti-competitive way. We are true competitors and don’t have any bilateral non-poaching.”

A) It's the "Elder Wand"

B) The tale of the Peverell brothers shows that the youngest triumphed.

You could not have won the point for the other side more!

Trust me, CAM will soon (or probably he has begun to already) that "bagging" SAM's IP team was no triumph

Take it easy Tiger! Half of Delhi seems to be hired by us (CAM). Now let's see them perform so that we mere mortals still get a very very small piece of the pie.

Sincerely,

Isn't the heading misleading..??? Kian, Ranjan left the erstwhile AMSS before the split (many rumors in market about his exit, and everyone knows the truth now).. your heading suggest that CAM poached a Partner from SAM ???

As far as I know, he left in April. I personally haven't been able to get any evidence that the rumours you speak of as anything other than rumours.

I don't think he left to join CAM, but certainly CAM now hiring the team only 1 month after he left suggests that it was more or less a lateral hire.

Plus, there's also Aarti Joshi...

but i have a confirmed source telling me [...], however thats not the concern here the point i want to make that the headline is misleading as it is giving an impression that Mr. Negi is poached by CAM from SAM which is certainly not the case.

Anyways my intention is not to demean or question the intigrity or capabilities of MR. Negi, he "was" and "is" a good lawyer [...].

Cheers..!!!

How well does your source know or was your source told by another confirmed source? Anyway, don't want to get into gossip and rumour, which is all that this seems to be honest.

The headline just says 'bags' not 'poached', so don't think there's an issue...

Kian, have you ever personally got evidence of this nature? Ever?

Just asking...

Yeah, often enough we can get enough that's satisfactory... In this case most things seem to point towards it being a product of the rumour / propaganda mill. If you disagree, please give me a call anonymously on 0900 405 6651.

There are only two classes of losers in this game - firms and clients. Firms because their cost of retaining "talent" would go up even as Associates and Partners turn into trapeze artists. Clients, because at the end of the day, the cost of the firm's head-count will go to either drive client costs up (in a value play) or bring the quality down (in a volume play). The sanest firms are those who are avoiding this game and the sanest clients are those who are avoiding the firms that are playing this game.
Real losers 2 Jun 2015, 04:09
+1 -1
As a client (read in-house), we are seeing costs go down. So I guess the only "losers" would be the firm or rather the equity partners (who, lets be honest, were already earning much more than enough - just look at the "bonus" the associates get).

Negi's move cannot be technically called as poach as he had already left/released/whateevr. Not so sure about Aarti
kianganz 29 May 2015, 10:36

Of course we never called it a 'poach' either, but the headline just states that CAM 'bags', which seems accurate enough in the circumstances, no?

Kian

The title is still misleading. Poach or bag, is in context of Shardul IP Partner. As you know Mr. Negi is not Shardul IP Partner. He is a "former" IP partner at delhi region of Amarchand Mangaldas.

Sometimes I feel you are just being arrogant. You may know somewhere within that you are wrong but won't admit and go on defending what you have written.

You should have been a partner at an indian law firm.
kianganz 30 May 2015, 04:36
+3 -1
Well, you're totally entitle to feel that way but that doesn't make your argument correct.

In a headline it's absolutely fine in my book and we've used it lots of other times before in similar circumstances, not sure why you single out this one in particular is upsetting you so much.

If someone took a sabbatical or 6 months off or whatever, then we might say former partner in the headline. If they quit their job 1 month ago (and therefore would normally still be on notice period), then it's fair to describe that person as a partner from there and it becomes pointless semantics (for the purposes of a headline) at what point of us reporting the story we begin to classify someone as an ex-partner, partner-on-notice, current partner who's not told the firm, partner on gardening leave, etc. etc.

It not the case of some one who is on sabbatical... your argument is falling short of reasons as cant you smell something when one leaves, without being asked to serve the notice period???

headline would sound more reasonable when it states "Former" IP Partner,. but being ""Kian" The Moderator, "Journalist" you wont accept logics.. kyun
kianganz 30 May 2015, 05:20

What exactly are you smelling? Akshay Chudasama is not serving notice period, for instance. Gotta love arguing with lawyers on the internet! :)

Anyway, you've made your point, and I respectfully disagree. We'll let it rest now yes? Ok thanks.

How about justifying your partner salary and doing some work by yourself once in a while. Let your associate do some time pass on LI else he will join SAM/CAM or switch side if he/she is already in one of them.

Also, go find clients rather than snooping on your associates on LI.

Kian, if you have an update, with a quote from Ranjan:

A. why place that in the middle of the story, rather than at the end like it seems you normally do? and then B. still run an older line later in the story saying he had no comments at the time of going to press?
kianganz 30 May 2015, 15:56
+0 -1
Usually we put updates in a place that would be appropriate to the flow of the story, unless it's an addendum which is not really related to the main flow.

Should have updated the bit about not having comments but it's not very confusing in the context, is it?

Nah man; I got no heartburn on these things (unlike some of the other more discerning commenters may get over what you write).

Guess mine is just a reflection of the fact that I read what you write with some degree of interest, as well as because maybe after years of reading agreements these things strike your eye automatically :)

Two simple folks from a land called Gujarat.

Came to Mumbai a law practice to start.

They pottered around and then one did leave.

The other took the name and promised: to conceive

A law power house that none shall touch

Him, the wife and sons believed as much.

And so Immortal Moon a legend became

Indian lawyers since, never the same.

Now him and wife watch from above.

The dying of their sons love.

Of course the new ladies played their roles.

Setting and re-setting their sons goals.

One thing they must hope for and surely pray.

Is their sons must unite again someday.

The ones predicting darkness already proven wrong.

Two Immortal Moons burn brighter, more strong!
