Khaitan & Co associate partners Iqbal Khan in Mumbai and Harsh Kumar in Delhi have been poached by Amarchand Mangaldas co-managing partners Shardul and Cyril Shroff respectively, who are setting up offices in each others’ territories.

It is understood that both have announced their upcoming departures within Khaitan and are likely to join the brothers’ offices when operational.

Khan is due to join the Mumbai office planned to be set up by Shardul Shroff.

He was promoted to associate partner level in Mumbai in November of last year and specialises in private equity work.

Khan graduated from the London School of Economics (LSE) in 2006 with an LLB, completed his JD at Columbia in New York in 2008, and then joined Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison as an attorney. Before joining Khaitan in 2013 as a principal associate, he was an associate at Kirkland & Ellis in New York for nearly three years.

Kumar is set to join Cyril Shroff’s new Delhi office.

Harsh Kumar was promoted to associate partner level in Delhi in April 2014 and specialises in corporate.

He began his career at Amarchand Delhi in 2005 after graduating from NUJS Kolkata, followed by stints at Herbert Smith in London, AZB & Partners and Khaitan & Co in 2009.

Khaitan Partner Rabindra Jhunjhunwala was not reachable for comment at the time of going to press.

Shardul did not respond to emails seeking comment, Cyril Shroff declined to comment.

We have reached out to Khan and Kumar for comment.

Cyril’s ranks in Delhi are likely to include Raghuram Raju, a former Dua Associates partner and ex-general counsel of Religare and other companies; Luthra & Luthra partner Piyush Mishra; Khaitan & Co Delhi partner Gauri Rasgotra; and Economic Laws Practice (ELP) partner Kirat Singh Nagra.

Legally India reported earlier this week that Shardul Shroff would hire Dudhat Pereira & Associates founder and former Udwadia Udeshi partner Radhika Pereira in Mumbai.
